I have watched a ton on videos on tumblers and I think you are the only one who went over the dangers of wpoxy so well. As a nurse and a newbie I am very thankful for that. As a newbie, thank you for the wonderfully helpful videos.
Thank you. I highly recommend reading the entire data sheet for whatever chemical you are using. If it is not in the package, you can find them online at the manufacturers website.
Your tutorials are AMAZING! The reason I haven't started selling my tumblers is because I want them to be PERFECT and your tutorials are so meticulous and exactly what I need to perfect my craft!
Thank you for your tutorials! I am doing my first project today- an aluminum water bottle I’m making for my son that I prepped yesterday. Your work is beautiful and your instruction concise. Thanks again! :)
Not a tumbler designer but your methods helped me with a different resin project I have planned so thank you very much! Also you voice is very soothing, making the tutorial much more enjoyable :)
Sorry, that is not in ours plans. I have plenty and they are very time consuming for our busy family. You can search other makers for tutorials on making them and tweak them for your needs.
Sorry to disappoint. My turners are custom made with lots of specialty parts and have been through a few revisions. There is no quick description of them. Hope you have a great day!
Do you mind saying what the rubber black end pieces are and where they were found? As well as the metal pipes pieces? I’ve built a decent turner myself but I’m not thrilled with the football on the PVC. I just feel like as if it’s sturdy enough.
The black on the ends of the pipe are actually tesa tape. It is a soft tape meant for wiring. It was just what we had on hand. We used it to make the PVC fit a little tighter on the pipe but still easy to get it on and off. You can find it on amazon. The pipe is a stainless steel pipe that we bought and had cut down to our specs. He is an engineer and designs machines for a living. It is definitely sturdy and hardy.
Thanks for your awesome tutorials and sharing your methods! I am hoping to be able to make my first tumbler this afternoon if the plumber will hurry up replacing our water heater and leave.
Lou Bascelli Well, it was custom made by my engineering husband. I just told him what I wanted and he went with it. It’s chain driven, has one motor meant for a 3D printer, and turns 5 at a time. I had an MDF body that I might paint some day.
I absolutely love your work and I feel like your helping me learn how to make these very cool cups. Could you show us how to make a school bus tumblr please, I'm a school bus driver and would love to make some for my friends and myself
Thank you for this video. You take time to explain and teach how to do this process!!!!!! Can you do a video on different designs using the glitter. Like a glitter swirl tumbler. Thank you you for the health info on breathing epoxy. I am looking forward to more videos!!! Be blessed and keep up the great work!!!!
Thank you! I have several videos that show different techniques. Here is the glitter swirl: ruclips.net/video/XIRVCgL-9WY/видео.html Thanks for watching!
Thank you for such a detailed video. I love your work and you are one of the ONLY tumbler makers that stresses the importance of PPE while working with epoxy. I have a quick question: one of the reasons I don’t tape off is because I can’t get my epoxy line smooth enough to my liking. You say that you remove the tape after 20 mins?? How does your epoxy not run down past your line after you remove the tape? Whenever I try, my epoxy is still very flowy and the epoxy drags the glitter down with it, making an ugly uneven line- not smooth at all.
Every epoxy is different. You may need to let it spin longer. I have found my sweet spot between 20 and 60 minutes. Then to get the smooth line, I wipe it with a baby wipe.
I am afraid the hair dryer would blow too hard and not have the heat it needs. Heat guns don't blow very forcefully and get a lot hotter. You can also use a mini torch. All of my vinyl is sealed under epoxy.
Hi! I love this video! I'm using it to make my first ombre! I would love to know if you can use a blow dryer at the least until I get something a little better??
The finish is beautiful. This video was very helpful. For each additional layer of epoxy do you tape it off in the same place or leave a little bit of space so each layer can adhere to the cup?
What type of base paint do you use? So you paint, mod podge, glitter then epoxy? If you want to place in dishwasher what supplies do you use? Thank you
Your epoxy looks amazing. I’m struggling with mini craters come morning after applying my epoxy. I think I have figured out that it’s from bubbles and maybe over working it on the cup. I tried a heat gun and still got a few small craters. Do you warm your epoxy at all or keep your room at a certain temp? I’ve tried warm (over 70) and cooler (under 65), it seemed to thin when it was warmer, but I’ve read everywhere warmer is better lol. Any suggestions would be amazing!!!
Those dimples could be from several factors: temp, amount of epoxy used, oils from handling, the glitter itself, bubbles... I don't warm mine except for the heat gun after applied but I do keep my room warm. Here are my steps: *prep cup- sand and wash with dawn *sometimes basecoat *glitter *seal glitter for chunky or complicated designs *epoxy 1 or 2 times *lightly sand and wash with dawn *decal *wash with dawn again- I never skip this step! *epoxy final coat *wait 3 days and clean cup well with (bare stainless with acetone) and then whole cup with dawn I hope this helps. Let me know! Good luck!
The rims, inside, and bottom of the cup that are still bare stainless steel. Those parts, I clean with acetone to make sure the paint, glitter etc are cleaned off well.
HII! Thank you so much for this video. I don’t know if you will see this or not but if I don’t have a fancy turner like yours what should I do? Just keep turning it with my hand for 20 minutes??
You can hand turn but its a lot longer than 20 minutes. Search hand turnining. Minderella has a tutorial on how to do it. You can get smaller turners on Etsy, Amazon, and even Hobby Lobby now. The black no-name one from Hobby Lobby is around $30ish and I have 3 that I like. Stay away from the Spin It brand- junk junk junk.
You can use a paint brush or foam brush but they would be single use and can incorporate bubbles. You can also use a silicone makeup spatula and apply it with that but I find those to be more work than just using my hands. The epoxy is self-leveling, so if you get it on the cup as even as you can it will settle and smooth out on its own.
I wonder if it would be possible to thermal paint those cups, and the encapsulate with the epoxy. Just thinking. lol How much are your cups? I love the pink & Orange.
Yes! I haven't done it personally but I have seen them. I have done UV color changing cups. So many possibilities! I am closed for custom orders until after the holidays but you can order by sending me a message through my socials or email angie@violetdoodlesboutique.com. Thank you!!
Yes, you may have to do two coats of epoxy to have a smooth finish but that is the basic idea. If you are adding vinyl, do it after a smooth coat of epoxy and then seal it again.
Love your cups so glad I came across you page! Maybe I missed the video but do you have one where you show the stage you put the vinyl on like the pink one you have on the right?
Hello love these. I would like to make my own for family members. Can u PLEASE tell me Where is the least expensive place to get the cups and glitter and glue? THANK U IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP!!!❤️🦋
Check the descriptions of my videos. I try to list the supplies I use and each video has a few different things. This can be an expensive hobby and there is no one place I shop.
The cup to the right is gorgeous! Do you have a video on how you did that one or can you tell me the materials you use? Especially for the lettering!! That's my daughters name and i would love to make something similar!!!
I didn't record that one but it is a hot pink glitter (maybe Drive Thru Daiquiri from Mr. Nola's glitter on a white base). The design is all glossy and opal vinyl i cut on my Cameo.
Can you please tell me how long a cup has to stay on a cup turner actually turning? Is there some point where it is cured enough that I can take it off and let it finish without turning so that I can put another cup on? I only have one cup turner.
I usually do mine overnight. If I am in a hurry and trying to load up turners as fast as I can, I will turn for 6 hours and them set it to the side. You have to be careful though, it will still be soft and can leave finger prints (ask me how I know, lol). If you do it too early, the epoxy can slowly run down and create a hump.
Thank you for sharing now i think im ready to try this. I brought the spinner months ago being scared and left it in the box. What did you use on the cups before you put the glitter on?
Tumbler newbie here so-thanks for your tutorials! For the chunky glitter cup on the left is it the same technique as the ombre you did with the pink and orange tutorial??
It's a little different. For that one, I did the same technique for the teal and purple, both fine glitters. Then with the first coat of epoxy, I added the chunky, let it cure and recoated it.
Fisheyes are caused by debris or residue that hasn't been cleaned off.If you already have them, lightly sand your cup and wash it WELL with Dawn. Dry it with a coffee filter or microfiber towel and reepoxy. I use MP and epoxy to apply glitter. It depends on the technique I am working on.
1 - How much epoxy do you use for this tumbler and if you have a list of epoxy quantity for other sizes. My tumblers always have a like a bump at the base 2- when you say the tumbler should be level, what do you mean? The arm of my turner is level but the tumbler is not when on the turner Thank you 😊
So I went back and did a quick view, it looks like I mixed more than just for that cup. The small bathroom cups hold about 60 total MLs. A general rule of thumb is same number of MLs as the number of OZ of the cup. EX: 20mls total epoxy for a 20oz cup. This is not an exact science but it does help judge. If its a first coat over glitter, it may need more. Over paint or epoxy, less. Once you have several under your belt, you'll get a feel for how much you need. I generally like to make more than I will need. When I say level, I mean the cup needs to be level on the turner. If it is titled, your epoxy will run and pool up. It sounds like that is what you have going on. Keep adjusting the cup until it's level. You can sand the bump down and recoat it. Good luck and thanks for watching.
After I sand my cups, I've noticed little imperfections in my epoxy. Like little clear bumps- they look like bubbles but aren't because they don't pop after applying heat. After you wet sanded it what did you use to dry it? a paper towel? microfiber towel?
Is it safe to let the epoxy cure in your main living area, or is it better to do it in a garage or basement? I’m still unclear on the toxicity of the epoxy- is it only toxic while you’re heating it?
I highly recommend reading the entire data sheet for whatever chemical you are using. If it is not in the package, you can find them online at the manufacturers website. I would not do it in the main area of the house, especially if you have others in the house, pets or children especially. Some people have very severe reactions to epoxy causing swelling and rashes. It needs to be in a well ventilated area and some require wearing a respirator.
Need to ask. When I apply the two part clear and let it spend for four to six hours I have uneven places. Also some places you can feel the glitter. What am I doing wrong ?
That is a common issue. It could be due to several factors. If it is over a chunky glitter, spray seal it first and that will help. You can go over it again and it should be more evenly covered. Sand after two coats and wash well with Dawn. Then coat again. Good luck.
You can hand turn if you have time and patience or buy a turner. This one from Amazon isn't bad (aff link) amzn.to/2VPIjWH If you want to try hand turning, Minderella has a tutorial on it. Search for her channel.
I glittered just like you did and your directions were spot on and amazing! Thank you! I did have a question on times. When you apply epoxy and you feel it is fully covered. How long do you continue to let it spin? And how long do i leave it sit before i can give it a second coat? Thank you💜
It depends on your epoxy. I will let mine spin for 6-7 hours and then, if it needs another coat before anything else, I will do it then. If it needs a decal or sanded, I wait 12 or more. I will wait 3-5 days before I ship it or deliver it to its new home. I don't like to rush the steps, because it never fails that I will mess it up and have to wait longer to try to fix it.
I don't have a lot of the details. My husband made it for me. I have answered a few questions in the comments of this video if you want to scroll through. But I was pretty hands off. I just told him how I wanted it and he came through.
You can spin by hand but you will need to dedicate several hours (6-7 hours) to turn it by hand. The heat gun helps pop bubbles and even out the epoxy. I don't always use the gun if I don't see the bubbles.
My husband made my turner. Check Etsy for small businesses that make them. Michaels just started carrying a single. I will do a review on it soon. Amazon also has some.
You can hand turn. I don't have the patience for it. There are some tutorials that show you how to do it without a turner. Search for Minderella. She has one.
What if I don’t have a turner? Will all the apply just drip down to the bottom and all my hard work would’ve been for nothing?? Ps. I’m very new to this I haven’t even tried it yet but I want to lol
Epoxy is self-leveling. If you let it run down, it will mostly run off and be wasted. Without a turner, you can hand turn. There are several videos from other makers on how to hand turn. It is time consuming but possible.
I get a more even coat with my hand. Epoxy is also very difficult to clean. If you use a brush, you will be throwing them away each time. Gloves are way way cheaper.
These are all Hoggs. You can get them from The Stainless Depot Co wholesale or Hogg Outfitters retail. All of my supplies are listed in the description of my videos.
I have done it on glass and stainless. It can be done on acrylic but I have not done it. If it can flex very much, the epoxy can crack or separate from the base and create problems.
My husband is an engineer and made mine. He has so many parts in there, I wouldn't be able to answer anything about it. There are several places on Etsy, Amazon, and FB where you can purchase a similar set up.
Thank you. I am booked now and have had to start a waitlist. You can email me at angie@violetdoodlesboutique.com and I can give you a quote and add you to the list if you'd like.
Does the type of epoxy matter? I used JB Weld on a few cups and it starts to cure so fast that it gets very bumpy and hard to spread. I've noticed that everyone uses the same kind. Could it be that I'm using the wrong kind?
I have watched a ton on videos on tumblers and I think you are the only one who went over the dangers of wpoxy so well. As a nurse and a newbie I am very thankful for that. As a newbie, thank you for the wonderfully helpful videos.

Thank you for such a detailed video. I love your work and you are one of the ONLY tumbler makers that stresses the importance of PPE while working with epoxy. 2 questions:

2. Is the vinyl on the other cup to your right underneath the epoxy?
I am afraid the hair dryer would blow too hard and not have the heat it needs. Heat guns don't blow very forcefully and get a lot hotter. You can also use a mini torch.
All of my vinyl is sealed under epoxy.

I show that in the video. I just use a baby wipe.

I apply vinyl after a smooth coat of epoxy, usually after the second coat.

Exactly the same for every coat. Yes, the glitter can move. If you are worried about it, you can use a clear spray sealer.

When I say level, I mean the cup needs to be level on the turner. If it is titled, your epoxy will run and pool up. It sounds like that is what you have going on. Keep adjusting the cup until it's level. You can sand the bump down and recoat it.
Good luck and thanks for watching.
@@VioletDoodlesBoutique thanks for your quick response 😊
After I sand my cups, I've noticed little imperfections in my epoxy. Like little clear bumps- they look like bubbles but aren't because they don't pop after applying heat. After you wet sanded it what did you use to dry it? a paper towel? microfiber towel?
It might still be bubbles, you can try a torch too but be careful not to burn it. I usually use paper towels but coffee filters work better.
did you make that turner yourself? thats creative
My husband made it with my input.
Violet Doodles Boutique ok good to know. Thank you!!!
You're welcome.
Good luck.
What color glitter is the orange color and where did you get it?! Love this video!
It is Neon Orange from Recollections. I list the supplies in the video descriptions for your reference.
I would love to learn how to make that turner
Sorry, my husband makes them for me.
Great job👍🏼
Thanks.
Do you need a tuner
You can hand turn but I do not have time for that. It takes dedication to hand turn but lots of people do it.
Love your videos! Is there another option to cure it instead of using Epoxy?
Thank you. If you want to use the cup to drink from, you will need to protect it and seal it with epoxy.
Love your tutorial!! Thank you
Thank you and you're welcome!
If I don't have turntables, what's an alternative?
You can hand turn if you have time and patience or buy a turner. This one from Amazon isn't bad (aff link) amzn.to/2VPIjWH
If you want to try hand turning, Minderella has a tutorial on it.
Violet Doodles Boutique Thanks for the helpful tips!
When you say you "wet sanded" it ... can you explain what you do?
Sand with a wet surface and wet sand paper.
Here is how I prep my cups. ruclips.net/video/LAjpoMDMIUA/видео.html
Do you have to make another batch of epoxy, when you do your second coat or last coat of epoxy?
Yep, it will start to set up in about an hour, harden almost completely within 6 or 7 hours, and fully cured in 3-5 days.
What is that turning contraption? How did you build it?
Cup turner, cup spinner, cuptisserie... You can find them on Amazon, Etsy, and videos that show how to make them on RUclips.
Do I have the seal the glitter with anything before going in with my first layer of epoxy?
It depends on what you're doing. Two color ombres, I don't seal. When I do seal, I use a clear gloss spray.
I would like to more about your turning station for your cups. Where did you get it?
I don't have a lot of the details. My husband made it for me. I have answered a few questions in the comments of this video if you want to scroll through. But I was pretty hands off. I just told him how I wanted it and he came through.
Do you have to use a cup spinner and do you hav too use the heat dryer
You can spin by hand but you will need to dedicate several hours (6-7 hours) to turn it by hand. The heat gun helps pop bubbles and even out the epoxy. I don't always use the gun if I don't see the bubbles.
Hi where do u get the equipment or machine from to place the tumblers on?
My husband made my turner. Check Etsy for small businesses that make them. Michaels just started carrying a single. I will do a review on it soon. Amazon also has some.
Do you also use the heat gun after you apply the epoxy after the decals?
I use the heat gun each time I apply epoxy. It helps pop bubbles and smooths the epoxy for an even layer.
Do you apply your decals after you epoxy them or put them on and epoxy over them?
Epoxy until smooth, apply vinyl, epoxy again.
Is there an alternative to what u used such as putting modpog instead
Nothing will give you the shine and durability as epoxy.
Is there a video, plans, or information somewhere for the turner? I'd like to build one
There are several n RUclips from other makers. I do not have plans for this one.
Two quick questions do you need the tuners to make these? And how long does the epoxy take to fully dry and or cure?
You can hand turn. I don't have the patience for it. There are some tutorials that show you how to do it without a turner. Search for Minderella. She has one.
Depending on the epoxy, 4-6 hours to be able to handle it and 3-7 days to be cured and safe to use.
How long did you let them harden for the first time?
I almost always do it overnight because of my schedule. If I am in a hurry and working throughout the day, I let mine spin at least 6 hours.
Why dont u use a brush or sponge brush??; just curious
I get a more even coat with my hand. Epoxy is also very difficult to clean. If you use a brush, you will be throwing them away each time. Gloves are way way cheaper.
Thanks for this video, very informative and educational
Thank you
How long do you let the cup turn on the turner? Once you stop it, do you leave it in the turner or hang it to finish curing?
I let mine spin over night usually. I always just let it spin for 6+ hours.
@@VioletDoodlesBoutique Thank you!
You're welcome.
Another question what type of tumblers did you use, and also did you buy the cups, if so where?
These are all Hoggs. You can get them from The Stainless Depot Co wholesale or Hogg Outfitters retail. All of my supplies are listed in the description of my videos.
Can the epoxy method be used on acrylic tumblers or only stainless steel?
I have done it on glass and stainless. It can be done on acrylic but I have not done it. If it can flex very much, the epoxy can crack or separate from the base and create problems.
Hi..why is a second coat of epoxy necessary?
I tend to do pretty thin coats. A second was required because I could still feel the glitter.
Do you have to seal your cup before you put epoxy or do you go straight into epoxy after you’ve finished your glitter process?
It depends on the design. One or two color ombres- I don't seal before epoxy. Intricate designs, more than two colors, stripes, etc- seal.
Violet Doodles Boutique thank you!!
You're welcome!
Where did you get your spinner
My husband made it.
Awe man
Can you show me your turning setup
My husband is an engineer and made mine. He has so many parts in there, I wouldn't be able to answer anything about it. There are several places on Etsy, Amazon, and FB where you can purchase a similar set up.
Love your work ....how much for a cup?
Thank you. I am booked now and have had to start a waitlist. You can email me at angie@violetdoodlesboutique.com and I can give you a quote and add you to the list if you'd like.
Did you apply the vinyl on the cup before the first epoxy or after the first coat?
I apply vinyl after a smooth coat of epoxy, usually after 1 or 2 coats.
Does the type of epoxy matter? I used JB Weld on a few cups and it starts to cure so fast that it gets very bumpy and hard to spread. I've noticed that everyone uses the same kind. Could it be that I'm using the wrong kind?
Oh yes! You need an epoxy resin. JB Weld is a strong glue but will not work for this application.
Violet Doodles Boutique I bought the one you’re using here and I immediately noticed the difference. Thank you!
I am glad I could help. Have fun!
