Girls were told the bare bones of how sex worked, but it was more about how to produce an heir than it was about real intimacy between a husband and wife. And to that point, especially among the upper tiers of society, marriage was more of a lottery or an auction, matching the most eligible bachelors with young women with the best dowries or favorable connections. Jane Austen wrote about the rare exceptions to that rule, as did the Bronte sisters. Marriage was more of a business transaction.

The fact that Daphne had to have her maid explain how to conceive a child was just so sad. Colin tried to explain it to Eloise without actually explaining it and if Eloise thought hard enough she should've walked her butt to a farm to figure it out. I understand they wanted to ensure they were always pure before marriage, but not explaining things is how some women could become very hurt by him lying about something because he's twisted (like you have to be cut with a knife everytime, and she could want a child so badly that she'd do it), or how they could become pregnant and not even know it because they didn't know the act they did would cause such a thing to happen.
Penelope seemed so much more knowledgeable about sex when she was lady whistledown, but appeared to not know anything when she was with Eloise. Was this her playing dumb or a mix up?
