The song is more about the paradox of how one "deserves" to inherit animal-like levels of lust, wrath, sloth and greed, when those (evolutionarily necessary) traits have been doing more harm than good to the last few generations.
Funny, I got kind of the opposite from it. It seemed to be from the point of view of someone on death row asking why he deserved to die if he was only following the same evolved nature that we all have.
I kinda see it differently, I feel that it may be about how our progress is just as natural as evolution and that change shouldn't be feared, despite our more basic instincts which may cause us to want to resist progress, but to each their own I suppose.
