    Im not happy with what was showcased in the armored core 6 gamaplay reveal. In this video I will be defending the Armored Core fans that have been patiently waiting for an AC game, only for it to come out with HUGE souls elements.

    These points are very well argued, great job. I think it's really clear to see who has played a lot of the older games, because it's these people who realise the game is clearly drastically changing.
    Will these changes be bad? No, especially not to most of us who trust fromsoft to make a great game. But they are probably the most drastic changes AC has ever had, and that's definitely a valid discussion to have

      A lot of the fears stem from the changing of genres, basically. For the first time in any AC game, we're moving away from a 3rd person shooter/ pilot simulator towards more of an Action RPG formula. It was a huge shift moving from 3rd gen (Tanks) to 4th gen (Jet fighters), but they've always had that simulator feel. This is completely different.
      Armored Core has always been a one-of-a-kind game, and moving to these new gameplay designs has a real risk of making it "just another action game, but with mechs!"
      And that's really, really sad to think about if it's true.

      I was also thinking that maybe this game was made this way as a step-in gen 6 because AC games always have more than one game in a gen so the next game after AC6 could tone down the souls-like elements making this first game in gen 6 just an easier step-in for newcomers which is understandable.

    These souls players who never really experienced the classic AC gameplay and shits on the old AC players for criticizing the changes kinda remind me of the "casuals" that they love to shit on everytime they ask for an easy mode in souls games. You guys don't want the souls games to be streamlined and "easy" as much as we AC players don't want it to drastically change, simple as that.

    • @das6109
      @das6109 Год назад +4

      It's an unfortunate byproduct of the series getting so popular. ER expanded the From audience massively and overnight. When long time souls players criticized certain elements of the game, you'd get the same crap from people who's first experience was ER and would here nothing bad about it. Perhaps unfortunately the new players with zero perspective on the series outnumbered people playing it for years. Now with AC the problem is the same, but 10x as obvious. One there's a gigantic gap between people who've played the old series (and particularly people who watched it change and understand its history), and people who are interested in AC6 because From. Like we're talking 50x as many people in the second camp if I had to guess. And the changes here are much larger than happened between ER and DS3. So you have a lot of people saying fans aren't valid in being disappointed with certain changes that they themselves don't understand, and the group saying that is massively larger than actual old fans.
      This is my perspective as a long time souls player who was only peripherally aware of AC, and only played some in the last couple years. I feel for you guys. Honestly anytime you get kids into a fandom it kinda destroys all the reasonable discourse, not because every kid is incapable of good discussion, but just because you reach a critical mass of bad mindless takes and regurgitating of talking points. I hope you still find some enjoyment in AC. It might not be how people wanted it to return, but it's cool it even happened. I never expected it (my bro's been waiting on an AC since For Answer lol). Maybe it would have been better if it returned with 1/3 the budget and so it could be considered a success while maintaining its niche appeal, but frankly I'm amazed From gambled on reviving the entry either way.

      @@das6109Brother you really hit the nail on the head here. This is very much something that I fear for aswell and also saw happen with Elden Ring. From Soft games are getting big so fast that I fear they are going to fall in to the "appeal to a wider audience" trap, while what I really liked about their games was that they seemed to have this attitude where they just made what they wanted and if you like it you are welcome and if you don't then they don't really care either. Making AC6 more Souls like because they know the Souls formula will sell does not really reflect that attitude they had imo.

    • @das6109
      @das6109 Год назад

      @@joshualap401 I do get where you're coming from. The only thing that makes me happy is Miyazaki is at the helm and he does seem to be someone who will just make things he wants to. When asked about ER's insane success anyone else would say 'yeah we'll double down on this', but I think he'll just make the next project he wants to and am hopeful that whatever comes next for souls won't be open world. Reviving AC at all was a big risk that speaks to doing whatever he feels like lol. The only problem is what he feels like making with AC might not mesh well with the series roots, or what its original fan base wanted.
      It's worth remembering that his first games he directed were AC4 and AC:FA. At that time he also diverged hard from the gameplay, speed, and presentation of the first three AC gens without completely throwing out the appeal of the genre. To my understanding the games are divisive, but even for a lot of the fans at the time of their release, they became some of their favorite entries (For Answer in particular). I think Miyazaki will continue to make stuff how he wants, so I hope whatever he wants is something that old AC fans will find enjoyable. The big popularity rise of the developer I find has caused way more problems with the community (especially diluting anyone who actually played AC out of conversation) than it has actually affected Miyazaki's priorities.

Nothing sucks more than to see your favorite series bastardized with modern conventions. The challenge in AC for me has always been designing a purpose built mech and learning how to pilot it, and repeating that process countless times. @@Garl_Vinland It's same as most of the older souls. Tank builds can be a helpful crutch. Sure they aren't usually optimal, but they may get a player a win much faster in fewer attempts. A havel monster spamming r1 with a curved sword or magic without a thought on positioning or when they're safe to heal is easier to win for someone new to the series than an optimal build. Same thing poking out from a great shield using a spear. But most people as they get better will desire to play the game in a more satisfying engaging way. You lose some damage (endurance regen, wasted stat points, one-handing etc) from this shield or the suit of plate armor, and so you there's memes about the most intimidating player in souls game being a naked dude with a club. AC is the same thing to a less exaggerated extent imo. You can brute force without having to learn how to evade stuff, and just slapping on your strongest weapons and gear and focusing on aiming and that's sometimes the best approach for a mission. But as people get better they might prefer a more dynamic playstyle with a lot of air strafing while aiming, attempting to outmaneuver and get behind the enemy, focusing more on blading, etc. So heavy isn't really a noob-trap, it can actually be the easiest way to get a win. We are going to buy the game and give it the benefit of the doubt and even play it with an open mind. With that said, most people havent played an AC game so they do need a point of reference to understand what theyre seeing. So I understand they would say something along the lines of: "wait until you play it"
    When it comes to players who have extensive experience with the franchise as well as souls, the latest gameplay footage, like you mentionned, already answers what are the major gameplay changes. Theres a reason people usually say wait until you see some gameplay.
    The gameplay changes are clear and also are a departure from the core AC combat. I cannot stress enough how the unbreakable lock on will remove a large portion of what made AC combat enjoyable. We are not talking about accessibility in terms of ease of access like when AC introduced the standard of controlling the camera with a stick, no were talking about a fundamental gameplay change that will remove a lot of core fighting elements to combat.

    these are really good points and the help me understand people who are still/got more skeptical about AC6 with more information. i feel like many of these souls-esk elements could've been far more palatable with good implementation
    -"estus" could've been an optional part with different versions. the weakest one heals very little but there's virtually no down time so you just pop it mid fight, medium has a longer downtime and prevents you from doing certain things for decent healing and the max variant requires you to plant fully on the ground for one hit of max healing
    -refill stations should heal you a decent bit and allow you to swap out weapons/refil your weapons if you want but NOT swap out your parts. make it so that there's an extra screen for what weapons you want your support/ the station to hold when you get there which adds another vector of customization as your support could be upgraded to carry more stuff or do certain things and that adds to the cost you pay at the end making you causious of how bloated you want those refill stations to be
    -reactionary bosses arent the worst but I prefer the chonky setpiece bosses of the old games and all they need is to add a few context-sensitive reactionary maneuvers to them. "oh you got up in giga base's face cus it only got the cannon now the main body rockets away for hit and run tactics like stigro without the blade" or maybe a big machine with energy blades like Jet... but a better fight. As an AC fan who played a lot of gen 4 and some (VD) gen 5 in his teens, I’m worried about the direction they are taking the series in.
    At the same time though, longer levels does seem like we might need those boosts, but until public demos release we simply won’t know.
    I’ll admit, the hard lock on is the biggest gripe I have, and I just hope we get ECM and lock on disabling features, especially for multiplayer. The main problem is, if we have hard lock on, the enemy ai also has hard lock on, which has never been the case.
    If enemy acs had hard lock in previous games, it would have been hellish.
    I’m just hoping that they come to their senses and release regs built for OG AC fans, removing the lock on, adding more old school switching (all 4 weapons active means no cool weapon animations!), and getting rid of the flask and checkpoints to create something truly fun, maybe keep ammo resupplies, but idk, the thought of facing the level boss on empty, after a bit of damage and just going ham sounds really appealing, and adds a layer of difficulty that would appeal but also allow the new players to get to grips with what a true AC game feels like

      @@MrSolidsnake293 True, if we're talking about a gun. But we're talking about a title of a game. Let's set aside the fact that the game needs to change for the new generation to actually get into - since well, the developers still need to make sure the title still survives in the future when all of us is either to old to play and support it - The reality is the AC series has changed quite a lot over the years and those "subtle changes" mentioned in the video are not subtle at all.
      The contradiction here are the facts that as each version of AC where produced, new mechanics are being added and some old ones are removed. Case in point are the limitations on parts, movement and booster just to name a few. You cannot deny the fact that AC5 is a VERY different game than the first AC, which also in my perspective AC:VD although supposed to be in the same universe as AC6 is much better (and harder) than AC5.
      You said that an AR-15 cannot be an M16, that's true. But, it doesn't mean an M16 cannot be improved does it? For example, in the case of the F-15C and F15EX II. Both came from the same designer, sharing the same designs and the same role yet the F15EX II is the better version of the multi-role fighter jet - even though they share the same design, all because of the upgrades made to the F-15EX II. But still, both are considered F-15 series. Both are different yet the same - same as every AC series.
      Another example would be the JRPG's in particular the Final Fantasy series. They moved from the standard turn base and pixel, to turn base 3D and now 3D and action genre of game. Yet, each and every game is the same - a Final Fantasy game, change for a different audience. And to be honest I don't like the action base FF because I'm a turn base guy when it comes to my JRPG's but, I still respect that those new FF action type games are still part of the ever growing FF franchise.
      As for AC6, I will not judge it prematurely and I do have another comment here stating why, but, as far as I know there are only 5-6 changes added in the game and the rest is still the same. Sure, I also don't like some of the changes I do know because of all the previews but AC6 still has what made the AC Series it is -Giant Mechs I can pilot that I can customize and blow things up, which deny it or not that's the reason we're all playing the game series from the very beginning.

      As for modern games... almost every single game in the last 10 years has tried to "future proof" itself or chase some artificial audience blindly to their demise. It is extremely rare for a game to change and be successful outside a small rise in players the first month and then stagnation all because they tried to entertain an audience that wouldn't be interested in staying for more than a trend.

    The gameplay videos to VI killed my hype for this game (Full Stop). I am keeping my pre-order though, for two reasons: 1.) It will ALWAYS hold it's value 2.) I think AC VI will still be a good game.
    I no longer look at Fires of Rubicon as an Armored Core game. I am just looking at it as a new Mech Game, with Souls style combat. To me, this game is just called "Fires of Rubicon" (I detach the Armored Core label in my mind). This is just a more original IP than a continuation of the AC series.
    If you aren't a long time AC player, then you will never understand long time fans issues with this game. We don't want "Armored Souls Core". In the game-play footage I don't see a Mech fighting. I see a "character" fighting enemies one by one. The melee attacks DO NOT look Mech-like. They look like a samurai (Sekiro) or Jehuty (Zone of the Enders) attacking an enemy. In no way shape or form do I see a big clunky Mech melee attacking an enemy in those shots.
    The "Freedom" of combat has vanished that used to be in older games. The AC series has always been about having any moment in combat possibly change because of the unpredictable nature of your enemies, especially other Ravens. You had to constantly keep re-adjusting to ever changing conditions.
    Now everything is predictable and routine, reaction based combat.
    Like I said previously, this WILL be a good game (Lots of Fun). Just don't call it an "ACTUAL" Armored Core game. It's most definitely not.

    After thinking about it for a while, I think I came into a conclusion that pin points my worries about this upcoming game. The previous 5 generations (6 if you include .5) iterated on the formula with Gen 4 and 5 changing how we maneuver but not never how we tackle combat (as in when we are in the field). Yes 5th gen penalized us more for not bringing the proper tools to the fight but after that, once you're out of the garage, you're playing an armored core game albeit with a different movement system (or faster in the case of 4th gen). Gen 6 changes that...
    I'm not worried that it is being changed mind you, I'm just worried on what will be sacrificed by said change. Freeing up the right thumb originally used by the camera to focus more on maneuvering thanks to the enhanced melee system, new hard lock on mechanic and the "barely there" turn rate sounds like a great idea but it seems to only cater to close range mechs, same goes with the stagger mechanic and combo system to deliver critical hits (not to mention the knock back, where in if weapons have damage falloff, that will become another issue). Like seriously, if you were to build a mid to long range mech (like the quad leg from the first gameplay trailer), would you really care for these mechanics? Also, because of how the game is built with reaction in mind, i wonder how the hell do tank threads even fit this game and are they just a leg part of a bygone era since they move like cars now instead of tanks.
    I don't know anymore... I made peace with it... but not in a happy sort of way, more in the I feel empty sort of way. I'll still buy it and I'll meme around and try to beat the game as if it was a souls game just to see how bad did they mess it up.

It would explain at least from a business perspective why Fromsoft would be trying to incorporate mechanics from their more popular titles. I was genuinely surprised to hear anything about Armored Core to begin with, cause I thought that gen 5's reception had put the series on ice indefinitely.
    I think this game would really help with a demo just to see what gameplay feel is like.

In gen 3 every part seemed like it mattered in how your mech functioned, but all that is massively toned down in 4th gen in favor of speed. Also the level design, which was nothing to write home about in the previous gens, is even duller and emptier.

    • @das6109
      @das6109 Год назад +1

      @@mariosubatrop3080 I don't buy that at all. Last Raven in particular is pretty brutal. And while you can build optimally for missions in AC, you can also respec reasonably frequently in later souls titles. Even before respecs players I've watched seem to just gravitate towards whatever is considered the brute force method in these games anyway. On the more passive/common side that's summoning two likely twinked phantoms in DS1 while using a great shield and the lightning spear you picked up in Sen's replacing your Drake sword. On the more actively chasing cheese side that's doing the same, but decked as a havel mage monster. Jumping ahead a decade beating Malenia with three people spamming bleed is close to stunlocking to death. Mohg people kill with a laser before he makes a single attack. These are the 'super hard' missions of our latest soul game. Some AC missions take a lot better mechanical skill and decision making with an optimal mission build than any boss in most souls games.
      Can you argue some of the souls bosses are mechanically more complicated than anything in the average AC game? Sure I think you could. But if we're talking about making people making the game as trivial as they possible can, you can get far closer to autopilot in most souls games than AC. Bloodborne is a bit of an exception because of lacking auto win magic, tank set ups, or great shields. But on the other hand you can summon someone good enough to solo the boss, and many did on release. It's hard to get around that. Sekiro may be the only modern From game containing genuine challenge for people who make every effort to subvert it. AC6 might be the second if it doesn't let you summon, I guess we'll see how hard it's end game stuff is. Either way it'll be a different type of challenge from previous AC entries.

    • @Datightguy
      @Datightguy Год назад +13

      @@GeorgePerakis The tldr answer to your question is basically "since now"
      My longer cringey response is this: I don't consider Souls-like a real genre or a proper term for From's games after 2009 but I say it sometimes since I'm too lazy to say what I really mean.
      What can't be denied is that Miyazaki has certain preferences when it comes to making games and his preferences have made From a ton of money. Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Sekiro, and Elden Ring are 5 new IPs and yet they share a similar formula. Despite sharing a formula, every single game did something that the series has never done before, and two of those games completely ditched the medieval fantasy setting.
      So it doesn't matter what the setting or title of the game is, any game From makes can make room for Miyazaki's preferences if he desires. AC6 now has limited use healing items that can be restored, refill checkpoints scattered throughout a zone, difficult bosses with telegraphed attacks that will test your reactions, a new lock on system never before seen in the AC series, and apparently super punishing attacks if we're to trust the devs when they say you're not safe at 60% health. And you better believe that if they reveal that using the checkpoints will respawn enemies, people are going to be calling them bonfires/site of grace.
      "Souls-like" games didn't invent these features but they've been staples in games that Miyazaki has been making or influencing. They are also NOT bad features.
      However these features are not staples in AC games and old fans weren't particularly begging for these features to be added.
      This is what I meant when I implied that I'll feel like I'm playing something I've been playing since 2011. I mean I'm going to be experiencing these staple features again for the seventh time in a From Software game.
      I'm a huge Souls fan and Demon's Souls is in my top 5 games of all time. AC is a series I only picked up about 6-7 months ago. I still think AC6 is something to look forward to and I'm playing it day one. I can just empathize with a fan base that's been following a series for a while and were anticipating features that they consider staples in their series. They'll still get a good chunk of those features but maybe not at the same level as they wanted them to be.
      Quick side note, and I'm not saying this to you because you didn't say this but;
      It rubs me the wrong way when people accuse old AC fans of simply hating change, and that old AC fans just want the same thing over and over, yet they're praising AC6 for having the same features From's been using for 14 years across 5 IPs. AC as a series has evolved just as much as the Souls series if not more. Old AC fans can handle change and I hope they'll enjoy the new game as much as I will.

    I hate to say this as someone who is an AC newcomer, but I think gatekeeping is a good thing. I've seen what happened to other franchises that I loved, and I know the feeling of being a fan who wants to be super hyped about the cool new game, but can't help but feel like something special was lost in the pursuit of smoothing the gameplay out for a broader audience. Monster Hunter World did this, making a giant technical leap forward for the series, making the graphics better and the gameplay slicker, but somehow I haven't found the new games as satisfying as they were back when they still had their more "archaic" design elements left intact. Over the past few months I've played through AC 1, 2, 3, and am working on Silent Line, and I completely get where the gatekeepers are coming from. I feel that feeling of satisfaction that oldschool AC fans fell in love with, and I'm honestly a little sad knowing that the games they love might lose some of the character that they used to have. I do think that perhaps people might be jumping the gun a little considering we've seen very limited HUD-less gameplay so no one really has the full picture yet on what the final product will be, but I don't think they're wrong to be very defensive about the future of AC. I haven't played gen 4 or 5 AC yet so I myself don't have a complete picture of all that AC has been up to this point, but I honestly really hope this series doesn't become some midway point between Souls and AC (and I love the Souls games).
    TLDR: Gatekeeping is actually useful and its overhated, and homogenizing every series for a modern audience is a bad thing.

      It's the same tired song and dance. None of those opinions should be entertained for that reason. Older AC fans should know better, they aren't kids anymore. I expect this kinda attitude from gen z 4channers but "old AC" should've outgrew this petulant paranoia, especially the victimhood complex when they get told to shut up and be patient. Ultimately all this doomsaying is just that - a lot of sounds and fury signifying nothing, and it'll change once the game releases. Most old AC fans will claim the game and then start being toxic like usual From fans once they see it's ok not to hate the game. while I mostly disagree with you, your points are (as Vaati said) well argued, but one point in particular really irks me and just comes across as ignorance. "reactionary" boss fights are new to AC, yes, but to directly say that it's a Souls thing is kind of ridiculous. there are plenty of games that came out before Demon's Souls whose boss fights involve dodging attacks and using openings. you can argue that it's not what armored core boss fights ever were, which is true, but let's not kid ourselves - just because it happens in souls games doesn't mean it's "souls-like." I'd much sooner agree that the repair kits are like estus flasks due to how they refill at checkpoints and such (even though, again, an on-demand healing item is not a Fromsoft invention to begin with). AC6 looks very very different gameplay wise but it's reductive to just say it's "like the souls games" when in actuality it's really just "like other video games."
    edit: btw I realize you weren't present at the gameplay event, I'm curious what your thoughts will be once we actually have the game. I don't expect a "WHY I WAS WRONG ABOUT ARMORED CORE 6" 1 hour long analysis or anything but some aspects, like the camera, seem to be unclear as some people claim it's EXTREMELY similar to 4th gen while some footage would make you think otherwise.

If you and just stay on target perfectly, that really means tanks don't have that problem of some cheeky light jumping over them and keeping them in their rear arc. Pretty much means that tanks are really the only option in pvp.
    I'm pessimistic with game companies. I'm also not a person that thinks From Software can do no wrong. I also.. just don't understand the point of the repair kits. 4-FA already had large AP pools. When you look at Vaati's mockup for the HUD. It shows a 4 digit AP pool like 1-3.5 gens. Not sure if that's what it'll be like in the final game but just seems kinda redundant.
    I also really liked the reliance on movement instead of the hard lock on. It made it feel more like mech combat in that the targeting computer would help but being able to aim and track your targets is what would always seperate good pilots from great pilots.

    I’ll be honest, this whole discourse over this gameplay footage drained and soured me a lot. I’ve went from rediscovering a series I liked as a kid using the rumors of AC6 to play the whole series and falling in love, in which I was excited just to talk about it. To almost dreading talking about it period. I was trying to figure out what was bothering me so much about this whole discourse from ideas of, overexposure, unfounded expectations, the clickbaits or whatever. To which I think I understand why it’s been getting to me. The grand majority of people engaging in this are arguing over a complete ARBITRARY definition of what makes an Armored Core game and what makes a Souls game.
    This is not to dismiss concerns, I have my own, but lot of t I’m seeing comes off as, “Mechanic A from AC6 shares similarities of this mechanic found in Game B, thus this is Game B.”. Regardless if they frame it as a positive or negative.
    You can notice that can swing to either calling it “Armored Core” or “Soulsborne” for Game B. When we have to realize that we need to have the self awareness of the definition of what is or isn’t Armored Core is different from person to person. For Answer in some peoples eyes is not Armored Core. Armored Core V in others is not Armored Core. To which you can agree or disagree with, but it ties to the point. You probably don’t give a fuck what my definition of Armored Core is, someone might not give a fuck about yours. Want to know who I know for DAMN sure doesn’t care about any of our arbitrary definitions? It’s Fromsoftware. It’s been a 10 year gap from an underperformed game in terms of sales. And in that time frame, they released a game that sold 20 million copies. That’s not a sales = quality argument that’s influence and change were going to happen regardless. However I think people misconstrued what is and isn’t a direct soulsborne influence and what’s general 3D action game influences or logical progression in their eyes. Fromsoftware could have been pushing Elden Ring DLC for the game awards but chose AC6. This is a game they wanted to make and push over more cash from their most successful title ever. Also an important reminder is that Sekiro was suppose to be a new Tenchu originally. However they felt it wasn’t enough like Tenchu so they made it something else. With how they stress over and over AC6 is an Armored Core game, in their eyes all the important aspects that makes AC is there to them. Otherwise this really would have been called Armored Souls… or Frame Gride 2 I guess.
    I for one when watching this gameplay my mind didn’t go to “Soulsborne” overall. My mind said “Damn, I’m really getting some Zone of the Enders vibes here and there.” And guess what? Someone is probably wanting to strangle me right now for even insinuating that correlation exists cause my definition of what ZoE is doesn’t matches theirs. Think that’s the crutch of the issue all in all. I find bringing up healing solely as a “soulsborne” addition for example really undermines and works of a lot of assumptions we don’t know for sure. Big one being mission length, one thing I was guilty of was comparing to ACV as my frame of reference when reality is those missions are like 20 minutes where AC6 could be 40 to an HOUR for a mission for all we know. To which a no animation 3 stock replenish might be a godsend cause picturing doing a 40 minute mission in Last Raven with no heals nor ammo replenishment would shit my pants. I think the criticism you brought up for example that has a lot more weight is the checkpoint garage changing of AC where it can encourage sloppier boss design. Mainly cause it’s not based on anyone’s arbitrary definitions, it’s an actual concern that kind of decision can lead to. Much like my issue with healing is more the idea of being able to use it mid combat when I think it would be a lot more satisfying to plan out an encounter and decide if I need to use one of my resupplies now or later instead of using it when you’re about to die.
    I’ve been down this road before with another game and series I held with high regard which was Guilty Gear Strive. I ultimately did not like the game, and a have lots of issues with it, but my criticism of it compared to why I dislike it is not hand in hand if it’s Guilty Gear or not. I can imagine it’ll be a similar case for people with this game too. The important thing about that though is ASW rereleased and updated the older titles that I did love so now I can play them as just as viable of an option as the new game. So that’s the real thing we ALL need to be bitching at Fromsoftware about is not AC6 is too soulslike. Instead we should be bitching about is WHERE THE FUCK IS THE HD COLLECTION/RERELEASE OF OLD ARMORED CORE GAMES. Add back netplay to the titles and we’ll all be laughing even if AC6 doesn’t tickle the fancy. Enjoy your content and hope the best for you.

    • @Cynical_Kirby
      @Cynical_Kirby Год назад +3

      Any concern can be legitimate, but it’s important to be aware on why you might be having that concern. Be it a personal or critical one. So in regards to the lock on system I think it’s very valid to say something even like, “From what I’ve seen the hard lock on changes the systems and gameplay in a way I would not prefer for AC6 if it functions in the way I believe it does” or whatever. That’s fine cause it’s all speculation. What I’m not fine with is thinking it’s a cut and dry solved mechanic. Because if it really is just the dark souls lock on then the simple question arises. “If it is just a dark souls lock on, why does FCS still exist?”
      To my knowledge soulsborne does not have any mechanic similar to the FCS and it’s a sweat off my brow cause I thought it was removed from the gameplay trailer because I was able to tell hard lock on was there prior. However with the FCS system that opens up a whole can of worms of what on earth it does and how it effects the lock ons? Do certain ones are more melee focused and have a stronger hard lock on while being weak in regards to ranged soft? Is it just for soft lock on or does it effect hard lock on itself? Lot of questions which ties to the point that, we may know a lot more of the game now, but Armored Core 6 is still far away from a “solved” game.
      Fine to have concerns, fine to not like what you see or disagree with From’s approach of the game, but we can’t pretend we know everything under the hood already.

    Hard-locking feels like it will takes something away from the series. I know gen 4 had a lock-on system, but it was always weak as you said. If it was stronger I'd have actually used it, maybe liked it, but there is a limit where the factor of our-running your opponent's view just won't be a thing. I say that, but watching Ratatoskr's podcast with Fighting Cowboy did make me feel better about all of this stuff. How usually in gen 4 aiming wasn't much of an issue and when it was you had to play the game through the radar more than the actual screen which wasn't the funnest thing. In pre-stick camera AC games, that would mean more in how much it affected gameplay, but with gen 4 hard-locking wouldn't have taken away that much outside of the crazy fights. And even then I doubt that From will make the lock in AC 6 perfect. Hell, maybe it will be, but something will have to give, right? Maybe it's determined by the FCS, which would make sense, because then what would be the point of that part? Maybe it's perfect, but the actual aiming of your arms and weapons aren't. I believe that there's more to it that we just don't know-- I mean, obviously, right? But whether what we don't know is enough to convince us that it was the right call or not is the question. It seems good for the new boss fights (which I think the inclusion of is only a good thing) and I don't think it'll be too meaningful against smaller enemies-- but as I will keep saying I won't know till I play it. Not that I think everyone needs to follow that, it's just what I personally need to do because I truly don't know how I feel.
    The other thing was the repair packs. I don't hate the idea, but I wasn't happy either, just a little concerned. The best argument is that having a large pool of health is not too different than having a smaller pool, but with a few heals to go with it. Still prefer how it originally was, but along with the hard-lock, I'm not against any individual element that they change. It does feel a bit strange with something like the repair pack, but I still will disagree on using "souls-like" to describe the game. Because it's just not. It's got a lot of influence, clearly, but if repair packs, a hard-lock, and some boss fights is all it took then why is it used as a descriptor? I'm not saying that I disagree with the criticisms, obviously, but I've too often heard "mecha-souls", when I don't think it's that simple.
    The ability to use the garage at any time is the thing that concerned me the most, for the reasons you point out. It feels like it, worse case, will ruin the appeal of planning out your AC before a mission. Because why would I do that when I can just make two or three different designs and simply change it out on the fly? I'm not even against checkpoints, just the anytime assembly. That said, it's not too different than older AC games, because most of the time I feel like you had one-note missions. In the sense that if you fought a boss that was all you did-- with exceptions of course, but they were usually quite simple. That's not too different than treating each segment of AC 6's individual mission's as it's own thing-- not that I want that, mind you. I don't want longer missions to come back just to be dumbed down. I want incentive to beat the mission without dying or changing parts. Which if I was a betting man I would think that dying would put a penalty on you like most AC games. Changing parts in the assembly I can only hope has a similar penalty. Maybe you can only do it after you die, maybe you have to pay extra to do it or it lowers your rank, I don't know. I believe that they know how casual it would feel with no penalty.
    But like I said before, I don't truly know. Yeah, I know that there's a hard-lock. I know that there's repair packs. I know that you can change parts during a mission. But the specifics of how they are implemented is what I wonder. I think I can be convinced, when I get my hands on the game, of it at the very least not being a turn-off. My problem is all of the people out there assuming the absolute worst when this is all of the footage we've seen so far. Why assume that things like anytime assembly will be free at all times? I feels too soon to make absolute statements. At least we won't have to wait 3 years to find out. But you know the thing that I'm most worried about? The music. I believe they said frequency is back, and they never let me down, and what I've heard sounds promising (especially that trailer music, damn was it good), but I need my fix, man.

      The problem with your comment, and with most people's concerns, is that you don't actually know. For example, the hard lock is very likely not going to work how you think it will. There is still a targeting cpu part in the garage. They wouldn't have that if all you have to do is push a button and never miss.
      Besides that, we are talking about futuristic combat mechs here. In what world would something like that not have a hard lock?
      Same with repair packs. Why wouldn't you have that? And what if the game requires them? What if the levels now take 30+ minutes to complete? Yeah, previous games didn't have repair packs, but you could also do almost all of the missions in under 2 minutes.

I'd get more into the weeds with that brief clip at 11:48, to illustrate the fact that turn speed is now a thing of the past, further accentuating the other points concerning the 'Souls-like' changes to the game's formula.
    Perhaps a victim of the communities in which I attempted to discuss this, though any instance in which I raised these points I've been met with little more than a scoff here, or a jab there. As mentioned in the video, some people view this as being 'necessary' to avoid the 'slow and clunky' gameplay of previous games. Sometimes it's easy to forget just how niche this series was, and how few people actually played them for any amount of time.

You can call it 'fighting the controls', but unlike fighting the camera in DS it's actually satisfying in AC because it feels like a part of the mastery. The mech has limitations and pitfalls so you as a pilot get better at controlling it to compensate. Watching how you fly on your first few missions of your first AC to your confidence at the top of the arena is night and day, and I don't see how that's a bad thing. Automate enough of that away and it hardly feels like you're a fledgling pilot gaining mastery and reputation with experience. Regarding the community mentality comment - I genuinely refuse to consider the modern Souls community in the same vein as what it used to be. Sekiro, Dark Souls 3 and now Elden Ring especially have led to such a humongous influx of newcomers with a mainstream mindset that the overall atmosphere has shifted to such a degree that there's practically no resemblance to the old mentality left anymore. And this new crowd is very much in line with the "just consume the product" approach from what I've seen. Which isn't even meant to be qualitative statement, just an observation.
      Personally I love the Souls series, but what I loved AC for was so beautifully distinct that it is absolutely a massive bummer to see this design shift in my eyes. Especially considering the game is made by Miyazaki, who I always considered to be a vision-first-business-later sort of director. But I guess after the humongous success of ER it's hard not to acquiesce to that trend to at least some degree.

    My first Armored Core game was Armored Core 4, playing it at the age of 7. The order of games I played it was 4, 2AA, 3, LR, V, FA, VD, 3SL, 2, and emulated 1-MOA. I have over 500 hours logged in 3, LR, and VD. I'd like to think at this point i reached veteran status with the franchise. Lol
    I watched the gameplay demo and noticed a lot of other old AC fans are frustrated with some of the stuff. If I can help ease any anger within the community, I want to try.
    I think with each reboot we as players find old mechanics from previous games while finding new ones. This isn't anything particularly new with gaming, but it is good to point out that the AC franchise has had so many reboots, we are at a point where we like and dislike certain aspects of each gane respectively.
    With ACLR, I thoroughly enjoyed the amount of parts available but struggled with finding consistency with heat, generators, radiators, and boosters all while a lot of the back parts require for quad and tank legs in without Human Plus.
    In AC FA I found to be one of the mpre rewarding AC games with its regulation files and customization. What I dislkled about the game would have to be the lack of details on a portion of maps as opposed to its previous instalment, Armored Core 4. I may be a little niased on this and open to criticism (on all of this lol), but I feel like there was a larger variety of maps and areas in AC4. I know why, but it is something that I feel should be pointed out.
    Now, I like ACV and VD and spent my time playing it exclusively offline. I did not get the chance to experience fighting other players or take on the bosses. A lot of it being reduced to what it was in 4 and FA, I felt at the time it was something that I could still get on board with. Because no matter the reboot, the theme has always been consistent. Humanity fighting, corporations with their greed, AI attacking humanity, etc. Graphics for V weren't as ideal for me but I liked some of the side characters.
    Chief and RD were my favorites in V. The sheer energy of Wally Wingert as a villain was wonderful. VD took what they learned from V and refined it to be even better.
    V had its own checkpoints and could call in for resupply or temporary part swapping. For the story missions it had, it felt somewhat immersive. And while sure it did make things easier to a degree, the game gave you more rewards if you stuck to your old AC routes and tried to tackle everything without these aids. I specifically remember fighting Zodiac ACs and just the effort of getting to them was without the use of resupply and making sure your AP doesn't fall below a certain point. This ket factor here is why I am not worried with AC VI. They will give you all of this support, but it is entirely up to you as a player if you want to use it or not.
    VD however had its own problems in its own right. I felt customization was the most difficult with this game given the parts and the legs with their load capacity. Unlike other AC games, I couldn't really experiment around for the fun of it. My biggest worry for Fires of Rubicon will be how much I can customize. The amount of parts doesn't always make up for how limiting your energy and equip load will be.
    My concerns for VI feel somewhat small considering everything FromSoftware has showed us thus far, and will be fine once we start playing.
    I'm not a particular fan of the reticle for VI, it looks a little too much like V/VD, and seems a little redundant if our weapon data is on the bottom right (thank you Vaati with your photographic memory). I do like the enemy status shown when locking on however. Hard locks and soft locks are of no concern to me as Arnored Core 4 is the biggest example of using that specific mechanic. You can lock on to enemies but by pretting the righy joystick, you pull up a camera view and have a hard lock on that specific enemy. I found it qite helpful due to 4th Gen's extreme speeds with their quick boosting. And even in FA we had a similar hard lock on other enemies and NEXTs, it was an audio que and color shift on your FCS.
    Everything we've seen thus far with VI has included the use of a melee weapon. Take it however you will, but I think when I first get my hands on my copy, I'm going to see how far I can get with dual wielding any ranged weapons. Staggering in AC isn't anything new, we have had that all the way back since the first AC game on the PS1. From grenade launchers to linear cannons, to heavy missiles, to snipers (4 and up with this specific weapon class), to laser blades, etc.
    I think what I'm trying to say is that this shouldn't write any AC veterans off. Like all the other AC games, we'll grab it, play it, and find things from older games, things we don't like, and things we do like

    I think it looks like the best of both worlds, broadly. I'm not particularly bothered about the exact format the controls and raw mechanical difficulty take as long as I can whizz around in 3D space with a customised mech. It also looks to me like there's a mixture of both more old school ranged enemies and more soulsy reaction based enemies, which should offer some nice variety. I am a much bigger fan of Gundam (just in general, not the games specifically) than I am of Armored Core and I like that the combat seems to be leaning towards something that's a bit more fluid but also crunchier and higher impact at the same time, in line with what my favourite mecha stuff looks like. I also like the move towards more complex, traversable levels - Armored Core: For Answer is fun but it kind of loses the appeal that mecha are both ground *and* aerial machines. The repair kits seem a bit redundant though, and I'm not convinced by being able to change up your entire frame mid mission either.
