SA has a long standing relations with Russia. In 1997, SA was one of the 1st few countries in the world to severe relations with Taiwan for China. SA is a member of IBSA. To have a seat at the big table , a country has to work hard by networking , you dont just feel entitled because you are the most populated country in the continent. Geo-politics needs presence of mind and clarity of purpose.
True. BRICS was started in South Africa. When the delegation of South Africa went to Brazil and India to meet to establish an organization that can give developing nations a voice to the world, it became as IBSA then China and Russia joined to become BRICS. South Africans even though their economic system is in the hands of whites. But when it comes to political systems, it's a champion. Imagine what they can do with an economic system when it's in their hands.

@@goldboateng8073 you may have a point my brother. However, BRICS as an economic bloc will have more pros than cons to the participating States. They're too nationalistic and not that opened to international affairs as compared to South Africa.

The Nigerian economy is currently worth 451 billion dollars and must be shared by 218 million people The South African economy is worth 400 billion dollars which is shared by 60 million people. What this means is that even in terms of economic size, SA is much bigger in terms of per capita which is a better measure of an economy. You are also correct SA has a highly diversified economy and the most elaborate banking system in the world it's banks consistently being the most sophisticated in the world. It's going to take time for Nigeria to develop the systems which will allow it to be industrialised and developed like SA but their growing economy is a good start. One country that may join even before Nigeria is Kenya because of the rate of development and industrialisation that the country is going through. Egypt is the next most industrialised country after SA and they may be able to join quicker too
The lions share of south Africa's GDP is accumulated and shared by the few, mostly white settlers and corporations which is why it holds the title of the most unequal country in the world. While Nigeria currently lacks pronounced banking systems and is not as formal when it comes to finances, that is not a big issue and is quickly overlooked when anyone looks at just the raw potential that Nigeria posses. Nigeria is already industrialized to a decent level on par with other african countries and this will only accelerate given its favorable situation where infrastructure, funding, demographics, culture and stability is on an upward trend. south africa has always had a head start due to its settler colony status but that is rapidly diminishing not only to Nigeria but to other african countries in general as it stagnate. the issue is nigerias sheer size and geography makes it a juggernaut and it holds huge potential, so as someone who is looking in from the outside, nigeria is a best bet because good investors and people with foresight invest early.

The moment Nigeria moves away from the west, Africa would never remain the same. Nigeria would make a huge impact in influencing Africa more dan South Africa
You couldn't be more wrong with your statement. What every foreign African fails to realise is that we are not like the rest of you and nor do we wish to be. South Africa is a multi-racial and multi cultural country with Black South Africans, White South Africans, Indian South Africans, Coloured/Mixed race South Africans, Chinese South Africans and other South Africans of Asian descent. We do not believe in pan Africanism. We have, and will always believe in sovereign patriotic nationalism. That is what we will always be, a sovereign nation independent and strong, and powerful in our diversity, and we are proud of this. In other words, our country and all our people irrespective of race and skin colour, religion etc, will always come first to all our people as it always has. This is what allowed us to build, in spite of our problems, the most developed and the greatest and best country in Africa. None of them will admit this but foreign Africans hate us because they envy our country, what we have and what we have built. Just ask the thousands of Nigerians and other foreign Africans why they remain in our country illegally and refuse to return to their own countries. THATS BECAUSE COMPARED TO SOUTH AFRICA, THEIR OWN COUNTRIES ARE SHIT HOLES. Maybe if you guys had the brains to drop the stupid flawed, not to mention racist, concept of Pan Africanism and embraced sovereignty, and an acceptance of racial and cultural diversity within your countries and had true nationalistic pride, you might develop both the will and the inspiration to solve your countries problems and give yourselves the ability to develop and improve your own countries. ANC has a long history with Russia goes back many years, some of the African National Congress leaders study in Russia and Cuba If u know the history of Cuba, Russia, and Angola, and the struggle of ANC u will understand
Thank you for sharing this. I also mentioned the point about Russia history with ANC briefly in my previous video about why SA joined BRICS. Your comment is appreciated.
No that is not the issue, Nigeria has a long history with Russia. Angola has a longer and deeper history with Russia. Ethiopia has an even longer and deeper history with Russia. South Africa was invited because it has the most diverse and resilient economy in Africa. That is all
They are many factors that were considered in including South Africa as part of BRIC member compared to Nigeria and some you have mentioned but we can start by mentioning that it has nothing to do with population because if that would have been the case Nigeria would have been easily considered but SA boast excellent infrastructure, its established corporate footprints, a culture of innovation, easy access to finance for business, a stable macro and micro financial climate, an advanced banking system, and functioning regulatory frameworks. Not to forget that South African currency is as the considered to be emerging market currencies.
As @Mikeeassay has said South Africa meets more international standards than Nigeria. Another factor is that the South African economy is very important not to just the SADC region (Southern African Development Community) but also to Central Africa and to some extent East Africa. South Africa also has an established manufacturing base, they are more educated and on average are wealthier than Nigerians.
Nigeria is not a functioning state at the moment. Nothing really works there. Currently, South Africa is in its worst state since the end of Apartheid, and yet even in this current state, it functions 100 times better than Nigeria. Very few South Africans would willingly move to Nigeria, yet most Nigerians wouldn’t mind moving to South Africa is an opportunity presents itself.

South Africa has much more influence in Africa than Nigeria. Nigeria is too focused on their internal problems. And I believe there is a sense that Nigeria is still under foreign control
South Africa is under more foreign control than Nigeria ever was and will ever be. Nigeria played the kind of independent influence and power in the liberation of Zimbabwe and South Africa, that South Africa would never be able to. Let me give you a few open example. A) South Africa was forced to support the unAfrican and antiAfrican homosexual agenda of the US at the United Nations, where Nigeria was the first country to tell the Anglican Church that Africa would never accept such nonsense 20 years ago. B) South Africa is stuggling to say that it will not arrest President Vladmir Putin when he comes to the BRICS summit in Johannesburg next month, Nigeria wrecked the 1976 Montreal Olympics in Canada, when it led the African walkout of the Olympic village over the support South Africa was receiving from the white Wester countries. c) South Africa has never stood up against Western imperialism in the DRC, some say Nelson Mandela was in cahoots with the US on the issue, Nigeria arm-twisted Margaret Thatcher into holding the Lancaster House conference that led to the independence of Zimbabwe, rather than recognising the bullshit Zimbabwe-Rhodesia of Ian Smith and Abel Muzorewa.
@zilindogomes1767. Nigeria has more influence in terms of culture and music but more notoriety in regards scams. The last one has negatively affected innocent Nigerian citizens ( a significant minority ) as all things done wrongly and rightly are ascribed to Nigerians. With around 220 million citizens ( most populous African country ) the odds are stacked high against it as it easily eclipses other nations in widely traveled and entrepreneurial people. South Africans despise other Africans, and think that they are the black Americans of Africa, as if such a condition is advantageous in any sense. Nigeria has stood at the cross roads of important African political cross roads, and has never once betrayed the African agenda. Africans can trust the wisdom of the Nigerian government, but Africans understand that they follow and trust South Africa at their own peril. Nigeria does not need qualification in this regard, and its heritage is well known and has been long lived by Africa. On the other hand, Julius Malema, the dangerous political opportunist from South Africa, led a protest to the Uganda Highcommission in South Africa against the gay legislation Uganda recently passed. My thoughts is that joining BRICS is a sacrifice. You're directly standing up against western countries. Many African countries aren't willing to do that. Joining BRICS means prioritizing trade within BRICS first not the West. This rubs western countries the wrong way, hence you always see their negativity towards SA. It's also a matter of building relationships and diversity. We had Indian, Russian and Chinese people move to SA even before Apartheid. During Apartheid, Chinese People were labeled 'black' and were hated by the miniority rule government, even to this day, Chinese South Africans are still 'black' upon their own request. After coming to power, some African countries, such as Uganda, allowed their emotions to get the better of them and were hateful towards their Indian community, SA chose to forgive and move on. This also helped to built trust with India and to show that there is no bad blood. The black South Africans were strategic with the manner in which they leveraged relationships. Even during Apartheid, black leaders would travel the world, building relationships with other countries. They believed that Apartheid would end, and planned an economy after Apartheid. Lastly, South Africa has a policy of never taking sides during wars. We're always on the side of peaceful resolutions even if the country at war is an ally. This helps to keep both countries as your friend even after the 7:31 war.

No guys I'm South African. South Africa is not a founder member however we were invited to Join in 2010. We did not apply. Every other country however will need to apply. Remember the original group was BRIC and this was an acronym coined by some fellow in the IMF who had identified that the BRIC countries 2ould become the biggest economies in the world in the future because they had both the population and the natural resources to do so. In 2010 China felt that the discussion would be disingenuous if an African country was not part of the group and so they advocated for South Africa to be included because it remains the continent's most industrialised and developed country. The other countries were more than happy with SA because all of them have a history with SA. There are more Indians in SA than any other country in the world except for India. We have a long history with them, Ghandi stayed and mobilised in SA and they have been South African for 250 years from when they were taken to SA as slaves. When SA was fighting for liberation, our soldiers were educated, trained and armed by Russia. China and SA, like India have a similar shared history but like Brazil share the same political identity. Nigeria is called geant of Africa because of the size of its population, not because of development ,generally speaking Nigeria has the biggest GDP, and the largest economy in Africa but despite that Nigeria is still far behind South Africa in terms of GDP per capita. Among all African countries seychelles is the wealthiest one in terms of GDP per Capita and South Africa still far ahead of Nigeria in terms of DGP per capita , so please next time do not try to compare South Africa with Nigeria, maybe you should try in the future but as things stand right now Nigeria is far behind South Africa, I can give you a lot of exemples, I know some people do not want to hear the truth because it is going to destroy their illusion but these are facts. South Africa is among the top or maybe the first African country with the best quality of life index. Having the biggest economy when you are over populated sometimes means nothing, for exemple India is the 5th economy of the world , France , uk , canada , italy are smaller economy compare to india but they are still richer than India in terms of GDP per capita. So please you have to do your home work , I am a foreigner living in South Africa. When it comes to Brics Nigeria is not a good fit as Tinibu is seen as a western puppet whereas the very purpose of Brics is to stay away from western hegemony.
Nigerias are soooooo competitive by nature that iv jus noticed in almost everything & mongst themselves... Advice: improve ur country & dont leave like u all do but fight until its one of the best

The BRICS nations countries understand SA's political environment and historical experience, I failed to understand why Nigeria is crying about joining or which economies are better.
China and Russia wanted an African country with influence in Africa to help them recolonize Africa, and South Africa became an easy target compared to Nigeria or Egypt!
South Africa requested by herself to join earlier just one year after BRIC was formed. The ruling ANC had strong historical ties with USSR(Russia) and Chine formed during the struggle against Apartheid. The West then labelled ANC as terrorists and refused to sanction Apartheid RSA. ANC/SACP support came from the Eastern Block and Africa. The bond has since continued and RSA is politically stable with more westernised economy no major internal security problems than Nigeria. I think Nigeria will in future be accepted. Africa must unit from all fronts...
Dude stop explaining nonsense ... South Africa was included because they applied in 2009.. Nigeria did not... End of story the comparisons you are trying to make are irrelevant...
In this BRICS issue - NIGERIA was very intelligent NOT to join a group of failed economies. Russia - China are communist. Brazil and Indian have very poor citizens. South Africa has comfused Politicians.
My Nigerian friend, non of what you said is correct...the back story you are looking for is" ANC made a political decision to move EAST bcz of the political posture of the WEST and that was effected during Thabo Mbeki's era, what you are talking about is additional factors not the main reason...

The Nigerian economy is currently worth 451 billion dollars and must be shared by 218 million people
The South African economy is worth 400 billion dollars which is shared by 60 million people.
Egypt is the next most industrialised country after SA and they may be able to join quicker too
True true and true
Egypt should not be allowed to join but Saudi Arabia (gdp us$1.7tn ) would be better in BRICS+

But you want join Brics? Let's wait and see on this one

Nigerians will always try hard to compete with South Africa while South Africa is trying so hard to compete with the world. South Africa is very important, BRIC had to become BRICS because of SA's inclusion. That wont happen if other countries get included including Nigeria. The name will always be BRICS representing the key players which are Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Instead of asking yourselves as Nigerians what is it you must do to qualify to be part of BRICS you want to know why was it SA that was chosen to be a key member of the organization. Nigeria doesn't even qualify yet, maybe Egypt, Morocco and Algeria will be considered.
There's no competition between Nigeria and South Africa. IT DOES NOT EXIST.

In My View, Nigeria is one of the top 3 Corrupted Countries like Kenya and Somalia in Africa. So, it is not reliable Partner at the present. The second group should be in BRICS are Saudi Arabia, UAE, Algeria, Iran, Turkey, Argentina and Indonesia. These 12 Countries are big in Economy and Politics. Then, the third group will be allowed after establishing the Economic foundation.
You South Africa talk too much,
The title is a misnomer...SA is a founding member....
Yes it is a founding member, it started as BUSA or BSA and evolved to BRICS later on
No guys I'm South African.
Communism/Marxism in both countries' is very central in their political identity. SA has also had links with Brazil stemming from the Lula days on the seventeen also engulfed by their common recognition of Marxism
