Not really. These retirements often take a lot of planning and consideration. Nobody is going to retire just because Tom Scott gave everyone the collective go-ahead. This is just a generational shift, these people have been doing videos for over a decade.

Matpat retiring was something I absolutely didn't expect. But at the same time, I'm happy he's able to quit on a high note and *make* the decision to do so in his own terms. I'll miss him, but I'm also excited to see how Tom, Amy, Santi and Lee keep the channels going (and Ash, of course!)

Unus Annus proved that not only is quitting okay, but it’s an important step to the creative process. They went to the extreme with it, but they proved their point.
Let’s also not forget that Anthony is back in Smosh. I never used to watch old-school Smosh, but I dig the new stuff they are putting out with Anthony. And when big creators retire, new creators will rise, because the demand for content isn’t going to disappear.

      @andrewevenson2657 10 месяцев назад +24

@@coopergaming4779 deleting the channel was a form of artistic expression that extends beyond the surface level content they produced. It’s in the same vein as Banksy, who destroyed their own art after it was sold at auction for 1.4 million. In fact, the revenue potential of Unus Annus is probably well over 1.4 million. The fact that they gave that up, the money, the memories, everything, makes that channel mean more than what the individual videos meant. If you don’t understand the message they were trying to create, that’s fine, but it was a very meaningful message about the temporary state of existence we all possess.
My question for you is if you thought deleting your channel was the biggest mistake you had ever made, why did you proceed to do it 9 more times over the course of several years?

matpats video hit me pretty hard and in turn, so did this one. I didn't watch matpat all that much just a few videos here and there over the years but in the online spaces I frequent (vtubers) there have been a lot of people "retiring" (in vtuber/idol world we call it graduating). Most of those people who have been graduating work for companies where they can't really talk about why they have decided to move on so it was really nice to hear someone talk about working in the space of youtube and online content creation speak openly and honestly about such a big decision. I also 3 weeks ago left my job that I had been working at for almost 10 years to explore a different field and it's been scary. it's nice to see people talk about big decisions like this when I've been making those same decisions too. I wish all the best for matpat (and in my vtuber circles Pomu Rainpuff who is graduating next week

Of course, the good people like MatPat stay for longer than the rest because they aren't likely to end up being 'horrible', but nonetheless, it just isn't worth the risk sometimes especially when it's very easy for the internet to pivot on you completely these days. It makes total sense to me that RUclipsrs that have been hosting for 10 and 14 years are moving on to another phase of their life. No one will ask for your opinion if you make coffee. They will of you went to film school. Sounds stupid but it's the way to go. Having a jewish name helps a lot of you want to work in hollywood or at least some influential jewish friends.
Or you prove yourself on the internet.
The up wards movement on a page like yt is much, much higher. In a company you rely on a person with more power and influence to notice your talent. You can spend your whole life and this can never happen. While on youtube if you have talent you will rise. There is no single person deciding your fate. It's actually the other way around. On yt you can go from making coffee aka earning pennies to a director aka earning big bucks. In a company without connections, not so much. Welcome to reality, pal.

You learn there how to make movies. At no point in all of your studies will they ever encourage you to get coffee. Stop this pathetic shit. Getting coffee for your interns is how you show that you can't contribute something worthwhile in the same time so you are getting coffee. Definitely the wrong move if you ever want to become a director. You better use the time you are wasting on such stupid shit to come up with an actual improvement or an intelligent way to cut costs in a scene without any loss in quality. you have to make them appreciate your skills. if you make them appreciate how you get them coffee, that's the best way to get stuck forever in getting people coffee.

Having seen a lot of creators/teams break up over less good circumstances, (not even talking about cancelled people necessarily, a lot of channels and websites I've liked have had to end/drastically change because of financial reasons or not getting along with their longtime coworkers anymore) I think it's such a breath of fresh air to see people just quit because they want to. People shouldn't be stuck in the cycle of endless workload no vacations content creation forever; in my eyes the main reason to work super hard is so that later in life you can work less hard. That some of these creators can now cash out and slow down is actually such a positive thing.
I hope more people can retire comfortably from content creation in the future. It sucks to not get their content anymore, but everything in life changes, everything ends eventually. It's so much better when it doesn't have to end on a sour note, at least.

I feel like a neat part of youtube is that the way youtubers 'retire' is always gonna be unique to each individual. I think that's why it's so hard to label the action because a label can encapsulate a career that parallels how infinitely many different ways people's lives change. Y'all are pioneers of a new time , honestly you guys each get to decide how you want to handle it and you can , and that's really cool and I think you made really great points and I hope that everyone does what's right for them and be brave enough to be role models in such a unique and still new playing field like this. I know a lot are shitty and end badly but I'm hopeful that those are learning opportunities for the next generation and that the positive infuelces shine brighter and stay stronger than the shitty ones , otherwise the next generation is fucked if we keep getting jack dohedouche and not enough genuine inspiring and educational role models like you and Lindsay Nicole (I Stan , let her teach you the world) and I could list others but I'm tired good night thank you for coming to my bed talk 🎤 goodnight

I also think this is a case of collective understanding. It feels like a good time- the start/end of a new year. A lot of these people are starting families or are already trying to raise kids and that can be really hard when your focus is on big production, regular uploads. When one goes, stating why they decide to step back, it can act as a catalyst.
That reason might resonate pretty hard with some long term creators. They start to think about it, wonder what the reasons are for continuing these big projects, and then finally deciding that maybe stepping back is a good idea. But, as sad as it is, it is a good thing and I am immensely proud of every single one of them for doing what is best for them

My theory is that we are finally running up against the RUclipsr lifespan. This hadn’t been an issue until now because RUclips was still in its infancy. Now, though, many creators have been grinding it out for a decade or more. They’re just ready for a change.
Think of RUclipsrs as hamsters, and RUclips as a humongous cage. Whenever a new channel is created, another baby hamster gets thrown in the cage. You won’t have many hamsters dying for the first few years because none of them are old yet, but eventually you’ll reach a critical point where your first hamsters begin dying naturally. That critical point is where I think we are - lots of the early RUclipsrs looking for a change in pace.
    But that’s just a theory…

Almost every channel I follow across a wide variety of topics is performing measurably subpar to how they used to. Short form content is soaking up all the attention, but the monetization is pennies on the dollar in comparison. So now the options are either put in a ton of work for medium format content and make half of what you used to, or put all your effort into short form and make a quarter of what you used to.

As a Rooster Teeth and Yogscast fan from the good old days, I totally get that. Each is a shadow of what it was, and with all the bad news constantly coming out after a while it just gets depressing. I feel like the quality of their older works is actively diminished when I can't recommend them without putting a big asterix on the end. Above all else, it just hurts to watch something and someone you enjoy keep going long after any passion and creativity has left.
Another thing I do feel is worth noting is that a lot of the guys who are leaving now got their breaks around the same era of RUclips. Tom Scott puts it best-he did Things You May Not Know for 10 years to the day. People who only know Jerma for his streams may find it odd that he's retiring "so early", but some of us still remember him as the massively influential TF2 RUclipsr from the early 10s. That was roughly around the same era MatPat started producing content as well. What percentage of people quitting now have been creating content seriously-REALLY seriously-for around 8-12 years? I'd hazard to guess quite a lot.

I believe people might be overlooking the workload that comes with being a RUclipsr. It's a lifestyle that demands constant improvement in content, the creation of fresh and engaging ideas, and the ongoing challenge of ensuring the RUclips algorithm continues to showcase your videos. While it's a dream job, it's not all sunshine and rainbows and I understand why many of them want something different in life. 2023 has been a year where around 10 RUclipsrs I've followed either since day one or for a significantly long time decided to step back. I think I know why all the legends are leaving, now. I wouldn't call it quitting, I'd call it putting down the torch. Most of the first RUclips generations (myself included) grew up on them, they were like second parents to us. But now, as time goes on, we're not kids anymore. They inspired us to become something like themselves, if not better, and there are many out there who now, because of them, aspire to become content creators just like them. Their job to nurse us, to entertain us, and to inspire us is done. Maybe their channel ends, but the charm and the passion doesn't. It simply is passed on to other people. I myself also aspire to be like the greats, but I'm honestly very aware that there is a very slim chance of that coming true, but hey, if it does, I'll say hi from the big world for you.

I have to admit, not a lot of these people in your video inspired me to make videos - but even those I know of that inspired me, have left or got caught up in controversy.

I think it will happen fairly soon. I saw some of his recent videos and it seems to me like he doesn't want to play (record) video games anymore. I wouldn't want him to leave, but at the same time, I'm not really even enjoying the way he plays video games nowadays. It's like he just wants to get it over with, like it's his obligation. I always preferred the videos he made just because he wanted to, anyway. Like the 100k steps video.

@@mrflyingace Though to be fair, I think he's going closer to the PewDiePie route where he'll slow the production rate down and even change the category of videos, but he'll never definitively state that the channel's going anywhere because... It won't. Especially with the previous Unnus Annus, I think he's demonstrated that he can still be 'around' and fulfill his content creation goals without having to shut down his channel (not like he has anyone else to host his channel for him) just because his primary thing won't be gaming.

Based on his comments in his podcast, it seems he is really diving deep into the movie making/directors sphere. Personally, I don’t think he will retire per se from YT but I think after this current movie is released he will slow down on vids on YT and probably lean heavier into his podcast. Again just an opinion of my own and nothing more, just opinionated.

i think the thing that makes us sadder is the level of engagement we have with you guys we joke about the parasocial relationships viewers have with streamers but on a level we do feel close to youtubers you guys were and are our icons, the mr rogers or johnny ball or dave benson phillips. we have seen youtubers go through highs and lows dark times and light and hoped that our comments made you smile or brought a little comfort. the saddest thing is not that the shows are ending its that we dont see our "friend" anymore.
matt talked about the level of popularity going down but thats just adult friendships the more people you know and the more things you do the less time we have for each other. but that doesnt mean we dont think of you fondly. heck in 50 years from now when you are in your rocking chair outside of your bakery you will probably still have fans coming up to you shaking your hand and thanking you for the good times.
its the saddest thing about celebrity is that while billions of people know you, you likely know less than 100 of us. but that doesnt mean we care any less because you guys are still awesomeness and its a privilege to be here during this time

i believe its more due to the fact that its like the old saying, "do something you love for too long and it becomes a job." they just got burnt out for doing their main thung and branched out for doing smaller content that is more easily made. thats my theory. i could be wrong tho.
