  • The Rocca of Angera is a medieval fortress located in Angera, in the province of Varese, Lombardy, Italy. It stands on a rocky spur overlooking Lake Maggiore, in a strategic position to control traffic.
The fortress was originally built in the century after the year 1000 and enlarged over the following centuries. The different construction periods resulted in an articulated architectural complex comprising the Castellana Tower, the Scaligera Wing, the Visconti Wing, the Giovanni Visconti Tower and the Borromeo Wing.
Inside the fortress is a museum housing a rich collection of works of art, including frescoes, paintings, sculptures and furniture. Among the most important works are the 'Madonna and Child' by Giovanni da Milano, the 'Pietà' by Bernardino Luini and the frescoes in the Hall of Justice.
From the keep of the fortress you can enjoy a splendid panoramic view of Lake Maggiore, the Alps and the Po Valley.
