Blake you are so good and helpful for new carvers, I Pray that you do more carving videos for us to learn by.....Thank you kindly for your time you spend with us, it means more than you will ever know for this 65 year old Granny, lol
Really great video Blake! I'm learning a whole heck of a lot from your channel and I appreciate it. Getting those facet cuts so clean like that is the thing when it comes to flat plane carvings, isn't it? Leave no fuzzies behind!
Hi Blake, thanks for your instruction in setting up a cutout for carving. I look forward to part 2 of this caricature. I am new to carving (about 2. Years). I don’t live in an area where there are carving clubs and learn largely from RUclips and magazines, etc. I live in St. John’s, Newfoundland which is the island portion of the province of Newfoundland & Labrador. Newfoundland being an island off the east coast of Canada. I noticed, I think, that one of the knives you used is a Helvie knife. I wanted to ask if the handle is the “oval” shape that they show on their website? Anyway just wanted to share and say that I get a lot from your videos and from your presentations of the international association of wood carvers. Thanks very much.
I am going to try your technique on the way you hold your palm gouge when carving, and also carving a baseball hat rather than trying to carve Hair. Thank you for sharing
Absolutely! I'm glad it is beneficial! Let me know if I can help. Holding the gouges like that may give you some more control once you get the hang of it!
Hi Blake. Will you be coming out with a video to finish up this carving with a cap project? I believe you mentioned one with finishing details was coming. When can we expect it? OR did I miss it?
Hey man love this channel and am just starting out in this hobby. If you had to select a started gouge set say 6 sizes what would they be ? Thank you for all you do for this hobby ! I feel you are a true asset in my learning
Hey Jerry! Thanks for the feedback! If I were starting out, I would probably get a 3/4" #2, a 1/2" #9, 1/2" #7, a set of dockyard u microgouges, and a soft V tool. Check out Drake gouges. That's a good place to start. Good luck with woodcarving! Check out International Association of Wood Carvers for some amazing carving demonstrations!
Hi and thank yo for your instruction...what type of basswood are you using...it is very soft and easy to carve...I would like to source some carving wood like that...many thanks. Jim
Hi Blake, I m from Australia and I am trying to join the wood carving academy and can’t get their site. It says there has been a critical error on this website. Can you help please with info. Cheers from down under, Belinda
Hey! Thanks for reaching out! I have contacted their administrator and will see if he can address the issue this morning. Hopefully it is just a minor issue. He is pretty quick to resolve problems. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!
@@lunsfordcarvings Thanks Blake.. 3"x3" is a large block for me as I dont have a bandsaw, but I'll check out your facebook page for the pattern and maybe try and reduce it to a more manageable 2"x2" block ! Thanks again

Hi Blake.. Another great carving tutorial, can't wait for the 2nd instalment !! What size block did you use ?
Hey Pete! I used a 3"x3" block cut out on the bandsaw. I have placed the pattern over in the community pictures on my page.
@@lunsfordcarvings Thanks Blake.. 3"x3" is a large block for me as I dont have a bandsaw, but I'll check out your facebook page for the pattern and maybe try and reduce it to a more manageable 2"x2" block ! Thanks again
@@petesilk9415 Absolutely! You can definitely reduce it down. That should work nicely!
Hello I would like a pattern for this how would I get one
The pattern should be in the community section of my home page.
Where could we get a pattern for this Blake?
Check out the pattern on Facebook or Instagram!
do you have patterns for this. or where can i get patterns
There should be a pattern in the community section of my page. Go to my home page and look for community.
Question...... What kind of wood you use ?
This is Northern Basswood. It holds detail well and carves easy with few knots or soft spots.
