    Later on Papa Baur lived with them until his death in the 70's. I watched this all my life until it was cancelled. My mother listened to it on the radio before it went to TV. I was lost when it was no longer on. I was 3 when this show aired

      Guiding Light was the only one of my grandmother's soaps that I myself became a fan of and started watching. It was always on after school. The Bridget and Dylan romance drew me in when I was a teen in the 90s, and I started catching it every day. Grandma passed, but when I watch Guiding Light, I am still sitting at the kitchen table with her. I'll miss it forever.

      I read about Charita Bauer's death in the papers--I'd watched the show much more recently, so I knew who she was. A short while later, I went to mass, and during the Prayer of the Faithful, part of the service where people can request prayers be said for those who have died--including people they never met--the lector read Bert Bauer's name. Not Charita. Bert. And we prayed for her.
      I have no idea what the church's theological position is on praying for a fictional character. Possible whoever wrote it into the book for that Sunday got the names confused, since they shared a last name. I doubt that. I did happen to mention it to the priest afterwards. He seemed mildly bemused. Not offended. No doubt he'd seen stranger things. ;)

    Thanks. What a rarity! I've seen some '50s GL episodes, including a few not on RUclips at present time, and I am not sure I ever saw this one. Beyond being glad to see the Bauers, I'm always interested in seeing more of Kathy, who was a long-suffering and very popular heroine on the show in the early '50s (as the decade wound down, Irna Philips had her wheelchair pushed into traffic, and sent letters to anguished viewers reminding them that life was short).

    My grandmother listened to this show first on the radio and then when it went to TV she continued to watch it. And her sister, who was my lovely Aunt Mary, loved General Hospital and watched it until she died in 1979. By then stars like Elizabeth Taylor were making appearances on it along with rock star Rick Springfield.

    Wasn’t this recorded live? The actors seem to be forgetting their lines. Also isn’t that Bert? I remember her as the Reardon matriarch back in the day when I started watching it in the ‘90s.

      Yes, definitely a live show. Don't know the cast question you asked. Maybe someone else will chime in.

    • @flagler88
      @flagler88 11 месяцев назад +3

      Yes it was live and Charita Bauer is playing Bert Bauer and continued to play her until just before her passing in 1985. The character also died off screen in March 1986, so you couldn't have seen her in the 90's and she was never the Reardon family matriarch.

    Since Guiding Light was still also broadcasted on the radio as well as TV in 1953, did the TV episodes (like this one) get simulcasted on the radio? Or were radio episodes reruns until radio episodes were taken off the air

      They did the television episode first, and then the radio episode, which was the same episode - both live. It ended on radio on June 29, 1956.

    Papa and Willie always had issues. Coronation Street that Debuted on December 9 1960 had a Blue Collar environment. December 9 was the day that Bill and Bert got married.
