A few things are incorrect here since this video was made. The 320EX can be controlled manually off camera through the camera menu. Not restricted to ETTL mode off camera. The led will provide focus assist on certain camera models rather than using a pulsating light as mentioned and radio triggers can also be used. The cost of refurbished models are now less than half the cost of a 430EX II and come with a full one year Canon warranty.
This was very helpful to me. I have a Canon 6D that does not have a built in flash and I have 430EX but sometimes don't feel like lugging it around and was looking for a smaller flash to use mostly for fill in outdoor situations off camera. For the money difference and size and convenience since I already have a 430EX I think I'll go with the 270EX as a quick and easy carry flash.
Awesome video!
I fought the small flash battle for years, before finally giving up and moving to large Paul C Buff strobes.
Never looked back.
Thanks Phil! Your video prevented me from making a purchase that I would have regretted once I tried to use it in real shooting situations. The demo of exactly what the LED is and isn't capable of was particularly helpful. It makes much more sense to me to get a dedicated LED light with sufficient power.
One of the best reviews for the Canon Flash. You covered all the points and helped me decide on the 430. Thank you :)
Thanks, Adrian! You can find even more videos of mine on my website at www.steeletraining.com
Thanks for posting. I was going to get the 320 because the 430 is more than my budget. After learning about it's disadvantages I'll probably get a Yongnuo.
So nice when, besides the opinions, a careful reviewer like you shows the real facts with practical examples. I was about to click "Buy" on a 320X to go a along with my new 6D, and now it is going to be 430EX!
Thanks a lot, extremely helpful. Came here to learn what the differences were between the two. The 320EX sounds horrendous with the pre-flash, manual zoom, no manual controls, lack of diffuser. The LED sounded nice but only seems effective in darkness, I think I'll steer clear of the 320 and go for the 430.
I have the 320 and 430 (and 580 and 90ex). I actually use the 320 more than any others because of its balance of size and power. The 430 and 580 are "better" flashes, but take up more room in the bag and weigh more too.
This is a practical, and extremely informative review, thanks so much for posting, because I assumed the LED light would have been much much brighter!
This has saved me alot of money and hassle. Thanks for your time and effort!
Hi phil, there is also a feature on the 320ex that can make it a camera remote. IE: you can use the 320ex as a remote shutter button, which activates the camera which activates the main flash and slaves (including the 320ex) so you can a bunch of photos with alternate lighting without going back to the camera. Also, it has a built in wireless receiver which can be used with some of the newer canon EOS range. I guess these are more a bit of a gimic, but if the bigger speedlites had them... wow!
You should start doing frequent tips and reviews. I know there's youtube pages like digitalrevTV or snapfactory that does this on regular basis, but it's always nice to see what other people have to say.
Thanks so much for this. Bought 320 EX last night and found a 430EX a few hours later for the same price and was confused as to what to do. Now I know what to do :-) Very informative video.
So glad I watched this!! Currently on sale but won't really fit my needs. Great presentation, loved the examples of the limitations of this product.
Was gonna buy the 320EX. But after watching this review, I've decided that it doesn't meet my requirements. Thanks for saving me the time and effort of buying and returning it.
I have (and love) this little flash. You missed some features and got a few wrong. I'll just cut and past from B&H: Wireless slave TTL functionality is available for off-camera triggering of the unit. The 320EX also has a remote control shooting setting that will enable wireless triggering of a camera unit. Other abilities include slow, high-speed, first and second curtain sync modes. Manual control of the flash via on camera menu (with the 7D and other cameras of the past 10 years)
Also if you forget to zoom/unzoom the head, you are going to forget that pop-down wide angle plate on the 430...
Thanks for an excellent review, as I was about to purchase the 320 ex; after watching this video, I will definitely buy the 430 ex!
Thanks for the effort you went to to make this video, it was very helpful in deciding which flash to buy, the 430.
Amen to that. You're very good at this. Very clear. A pleasure to listen to you.
Nice review Phil! Clear, concise and to the point. What was Canon thinking? The LED is a great idea but it functionality is non-existent. Thanks again!
This was a great video. Concise and to the point, informative, and you showed us instead of just telling us. Thanks for posting this.
This is one the best reviews i have seen on RUclips. Loads of great info, Thanks!
VERY informative. I appreciate the time you took to produce this tutorial. I'll be back for more tips!
The 320 serves my needs perfectly
and very inexpensive great photo quality it balances the ambient light levels to your main subject very nicely..... Gusda
Thank you for this very informative review. I've changed my mind from the 320EX and will go for either the 430EX II or Nissin Di622 Mark II.
Phils programme provides so much information, I purchased it - but as I have been photographing for a lot of years now, a lot was not new for me. So i Emailed Phil about it and he refunded me instantly. I highly reccomend this for beginners/intermediates and even experts.
I expect to get the 320 EX one. Thank you for explantation, master.
A Great review Phil! Helped me make up my mind over the 320. Many thanks from the UK!
Great review but unlike some people around here i think this flash is very useful.
I've been using it for interviews and it's been working just great.
a very clean and neat review Phil ! I was really confused to choose one between 430 ex and 320 ex. It's really helpful for amateur photographers like me. Keep going ! :)
Great comparison! I'm in the market for my first flash...the 430 it is. Thanks!
Thank you James!
Great video guessing ima save up for the 430ex
I know the higher priced flashes are better, hence the higher price. I got my 320 EX for less than the usual $50 price difference between the two, or about 25% less between them. It doesn't seem like much, but since I rarely want to use a flash, I wanted something with that versatility but at the lowest price I could afford. I think it's a good flash for someone in my situation, not doing it professionally, and wanting good solo flash features for a low price.
Thank you for your review. I was ready to buy the 320 EX, but will most likely buy the 430 EX now. Just got a Canon 70D yesterday. What are your thoughts on this camera? How do I see more of your videos?!!!
This is simply a top notch review! Great job and many thanks for taking the time to enlighten us.
Yup, I feel the same. I've got 320EX years ago and there is no built-in bouncer or easy way to mount it. Not even a slot to put a piece of paper there. I'll probably stick with it, using LumiQuest bouncer with some velcro - but it's far from perfect. At least it rotates around. ;-)
Enjoyed the video. You successfully talked me out of the 320ex.
Very useful review. Thanks a lot!
I think I'll go for 430EX for my G15 instead this one.
I've recently bought a 6D and all I need more is a flash right now. Some guy in the photography shop offered me 320EX and I was a little suspicious about that, that was the review I definitely needed to make the decision. Thanks a lot for the helpful review. I probably will skip 320, or do you think I should wait a little more and try 580EX ii instead?
Thank you for help me decide which flash untit to get between those two. AT the time of writing Canon have their chasback deal on. There is £25 of the 320EXII but £40 off the 430EXII making the 430EXII on £9 more than the 320EXII. I was going to get the 320 because of remote fireing and the video LED but seems to be not worth having. SO for the sake of just £9 the 430 it will be. Thanks again
I think this LED on the 320EX may be useful for finding the best position for the flash (when pointing the head straight forward)
I will say, I would enjoy having a small LED on all canon flashes, or built into the body for photographing items at night, as I am constantly in too dark of situations for the IR beam to assist in focusing.
watching this video made up my mind which flash to buy. big thanks!!
really helpful thanks a lot. wish id watched this review before I bought the 320 ex and couldn't work out why the red light infer red focus light wasn't working! a rookie error but lesson learnt . thanks a lot though
Thank you so much for this Video! I just returned my 320EX and got a 430EX II! It's so much better!!! You post the best videos about cameras, BIG LIKE! :)
Fantastic review, your videos are very well done.
That answered pretty much all my questions. Thank you very much !
Thanks. Wish I saw this video before getting my 320EX. Oh well. I think the LED light for video would come in handy doing things like walking around your house taking video of your belongings for insurance and things like that.
LED could be useful for macro work but with no flash exposure compensation control on the unit itself it would be a pain to have to go to the camera's menu to adjust power.
Using External Flash just like this, DSLRs should be always on manual mode? Nobody seems to tackle that, and are all Ex Flashes are interchangeable? Canon to Nikon? Never found the answers yet.
Hey Mr. Steele if you use the yn622 c2 ttl triggers with this flash it works great because of the focus system on it
Excellent review, much appreciated! I kind of had the sense that the LED wasn't really going to cut it, and the pre-flash would also drive me nuts. Shutter remote was the nice part.
Just attended Dave Black off-camera flash & lightpainting seminars. Amazing. For using off-cam, would you say the 430 (despite lack of shutter remote & LED) with my T3i acting as master would better serve me in the long run than the 320 could with its nuisances & limitations? Thanks!
Really good review. Excellent and honest comparison. Thanks a lot!
Great tutorial... Like always! You really have a gift to explain clearly things. Two thumbs up!!!!
Thank you for the video!!I needed those information to make my decision!
so for someone who would use a flash 100% of the time on camera instead of off, and someone who equally does video and stills on their hdslr, will a 320ex be better than a 430ex ii?
I am interested in using 320EX as slaves to the 600EX-RT for taking interior real estate photos. As the rooms get larger, smaller, just add as needed out of sight. Does this make sense?
Great job with this review making helpful and relevant points! Thank you!
Good review - I'm definitely NOT buying 320EX
Keep them coming - watching you down here in Cyprus
Alexis
Well that was conclusive. You just made my mind up on which to buy.
Thanks!
I saw a video with someone using the 320 ex with a radio trigger, I think it will shoot at full power though, is this right?
May I control this 320EX flash through the Canon T3 led screen ?
Great review, and well produced. Thanks.
Thank you Phil! very useful info.
I am glad I researched before I end up buying this flash... So sad. But yeah I will buy the 430ex 2. :(
I want to start wit photography and i want a canon 1100d is that a good starter camera and is one of the flash lights good for the camera?
I watched first 4min of your video and subscribed. Very informative and helpful !!!! thank you
Excellent review thanks
A major yes to the ending haha And yes this did help. Thanks a bunch.
Thanks Phil for the tutorial its really helpful. You have help save me some cash which I rather invest on a 430 EX ll and continue using my Paglight c6 kit. I always enjoy your tutorials, you reminds me of one of my former film lecturer @ University of East London in the UK Paul Gormley, you look alike are you related?
Hi!! First of all thank you very much for all ur info regarding light, It is the most important subject. I accidentally bumped into ur vids since then i have subscribed and watched all ur vids.Having said that i dont own a flash light yet, Saving up for 430EX II : ) And once i do i most prolly be signing up for videos.. looks interesting!!!
Thanks for the great information
Thank you so much! Very good review!
thanks for the review and good job.. but i feel like if people are watching this review.. they arent like you and not professionals... you are giving us a review on a professional usage compared to daily, amateur or just budget wise~
This was an excellent video. Thanks!
THE best review.. Find it helpful.
is there a flash you can buy for a Canon camera that is like 1/4 the size of the 270, just for small fill flash on the street, or can you only use a canon flash ? also, do they make something for Canon that is only a focus assist beam, something small, I don't understand why Canon doesn't have it built in like Nikon, also what do you get from the 580 that you don't get with the 430, and what about the new 600, i have a new 5D3 but I miss my Nikon pop up flash and assist beam
Great review and very useful. Thx
Great review!
Thank you for your honest review sir.
I was originally thinking about buying a 320EX, this video changed my mind, I'll probably get a 430EX instead.
Great recommendation! and Good vids for comparison! Welldone.
Can you at all use the 320ex as a slave with radio transmitters?
Awesome video....as usual. Could you please, when time permits, post a review of
CANON Macro Twin Lite MT-24EX?
Thanks so much!
great review. Thanks.
Thanks for making this video. I'm looking to purchase one of these flashes.
Can someone please do this comparison for me: the continuous LED on the 320EX vs the LED on an iPhone. If the iPhone LED comes anything close to the 320's, I'm definitely getting the 430. Thanks!
GREAT review....you are a very talented teacher :-)
Really appreciate your video!
Thank you so much!
your review is very useful. but i found out that the voice level in ur vids (at least the few that i watched) is very low. appreciate it if u can fix it. thanks and nice vid, keep it goin :)
sorry I didn't get something here !! !
u can't change manually the strength of the flash at all when u using it as a slave or u can still change it via wireless through the 60D system for example ??!!
2nd wouldn't this pre flashes help with red eye reduction ??!!
I thought that's why they stopped this red focus assist light in the first place :|
Yep, great review. Cheers Yo!
Thank you :D your video is very helpful. I will following up on your next tips as well. :)
me too. they are exactly the same price on amazon fyi
An excellent review. Helped me choose NOT to buy this cute little flash. Going for the larger 580 EX II instead.
Crazy good, useful, helpful.
What is the best flash for the canon t3i
AWESOME IM GOING FOR THE 40Buck's does make a change!
@hirvepaska it is compared to 580ex II.
