I appreciate this video is a bit more talking "waffle" than I normally do, just to confirm I never set out to review these speakers I just wanted to listen to them and use them to review other products, hence my comments about not having the gear that could really push them. Lots of people asked about them so I made the video as a result. Please do bear that in mind for this one.

thank you for the review. Very rare review of TAD speakers, very unique. The review and the opinion the hifi community has been waiting for. This review will shape opinion about CE1 (and ME1) due to rarity of reviews in general, and not easy to hear and test at home. Thank you are sharing your views with us.

I fully understand the feeling of letting go of speakers you connect with on an emotional level. You did surprise me quite a bit Terry with your comments on the TADs. Their sound signature are the complete opposite of traditional British speakers ( British being warm, rich & lush in the mids and bass). Thanks for the review. I look forward to the sound demos.

Nice review Terry I'm sure the tissues will be coming out if you have to say goodbye to them.😭 I have had some experience with these particular speakers, and I concur with your thoughts.
I heard them through my plinius SA 103 monoblocks, and they were something special.
When pushed with all that class a power the imaging and soundstage become even more divined.
And their speed and transit ability go off the charts.
But they definitely need to be fed lots of clean power to be at their best.🎧🙂👍

TAD was Pioneer's effort to start making US designed speakers. So they hired VP of engineering for JBL Bart Locanthi. So hardly a true Japanese speaker company any more than BMWs built in the US are Detroit Metal!
Way back in the day, popular Pioneer/ Japanese speakers were like the CS-66. Lots of drivers in a highly efficient cabinet. Japan at the time had limits on how much power an amp could have to keep power consumption in high population areas down. So speakers had to be efficient! But they eventually figured out that was not the most desirable design for the US!

Like this review! Mostly because mentioning the emotional aspect (at the very end), which i assume was because the speakers perhaps helped further opening the door to the emotions within the music (or the listener’s?). That is why I.. we dig a little deeper into our wallets, not so much for a 20Hz bass, or the most neutral-white clarity in sound (although either of it may help).

It’s great to watch and hear your passion on the Tad speakers, thanks Terry. Your comments reinforce to me more of a hifi budget should go on quality speakers. Over the years I must spent equal amounts on various hifi components and not being satisfied with the end results. . Now I wish I’d saved for a pair of higher end speakers like the Tad / mp duo and fed with lower budget components-then upgrading in time to bring more sonics from capable speakers such as these. I’ll start saving now!

Thanks for this great video Therry : )
The registers of medium - trebles are incredibly good, for sure required the best electronic/source to perform as best as possible. All Hi-End systems require as well always a good homogeneity between all elements.
Anyways, the price keeps very high because if you want a real full range performance, you need to associate a sub.
With the years of background you have, you place the level of the Quality before the price.
Continue your great reviews and maybe 1 day, you'll review a Golden Ear Triton Reference 2 different concepts compare to this japanese treasure... But finally if we keep ratio Quality/Price as the main criteria ?
    Cheers Therry 👍

I went to AXPONA 2022. There was a magico m6 system at a very large room with tons of crazy components and there was a TAD compact reference one system in a small room. Surprisingly, the tad came more impressive to me. Higher resolution and more 3d-like sound image. I would definitely buy TAD without any hesitation if I had the money lol...

I was lucky enough to pick up a pair of 2018's SP-BS22LR 's at a local thrift shop. Set them as rears w/ 6 Acoustic Research HC6's found at the same shop prior. They blend well enough in a budget 7.1 set up, but are differant enough that it's kind of like having a 2 zone set up in one room. Mish mosh set up due solely to budget and room limations. Very happy with speakers considering cost was only $80 for all 8 of them !

    • @glennjones6574
      @glennjones6574 2 года назад

Delving into pioneers history reveals that initially they were speaker manufacturers.. actual speaker components... Drivers. I always find it silly when reviewers , usually the ones lucky enough to mostly delve in the higher end, suggest certain mass market companies couldn't possibly make good speakers. I would think these larger companies have access to whatever resources needed to put together competitive products. Companies such as sony and Yamaha have always had a special pair of speakers in their catalogs that while lesser known, are there if only to prove the point .

Hi Terry, while since we've spoken, great video as always. It was your recommendation that got me over to Nintronics (Adam x2 and Roger) to listen to Marten Oscar Duo's, but I ended up with a pair of TAD ME-1's. Amazing speakers. I pair these with a Luxman L-590 AXII. I also have (kept from prev system) a KEF KC62 sub. It really makes a difference. I guess my question is, do I keep a single KC62, add a second, or jump to a single REL (space is tight and whilst I can do two KC62's it would prob be a single REL. REL wise open to S/510, S812 or Carbon Special. Any pointers from your experience and knowing what I have and where it came from ! Cheers, Lee

I love TAD speakers from top to their lowest price, which is still out of my price range. I really think Pioneer have done exceptionally well in this line of speakers and yes, it is a division of Pioneer Corp still. It's amazing the hi fi world doesn't think that Pioneer couldn't build great speakers but I put that down to hi fi snobbery. You only have to hear what Andrew Jones said about Pioneer and the engineers that worked there, hence he was there for 17 years! I have several Pioneer models, which were the forerunners to TAD speakers and also used Beryllium drivers. I think they deliver a sound stage that is wide, deep and dynamic, still to this day but TAD is unbeatable.

On a large speaker like the model one, quite a few of them cracked since they were made of laters of glued wood. TAD abandoned that approach, (and replaced or refunded those early buyers) and there has been no issues since. TAD's are wonderful.

You raise a tech question about class d that seemingly provides linear gain across the frequency range. Thus do quality class d power amps provide the best power profile for speakers? A linear frequency response of course depends on individual speaker design and implementation. How come class d sounds artificial even in $55,000 Jeff Rowland mono blocks feeding Raidho floor standers. That linearity is perhaps not so ideal after all? Again these speakers will reveal whatever they’re fed.
