Owning a few RTs in my lifetime, I test rode the new 1300GS, and all I can say is: the look will grow on us sooner or later. The 1300 engine is fantastic, and I can't wait to have it on the RT. The ASA automatic is another great feature that will suit the RT well (look at Honda, more than 50% of models that offer automatic are sold as automatic).

@@Pyrrho_ oh yeah I totally agree with you there, the new GSA is ugly as hell 😂. Although it doesn't look anywhere near as bad in some of the other colours. For some reason the red coloured one really highlights the massive fridge-shaped block in the middle of the bike.
Ugly bikes aren't always a bad thing IMO though. The new Super Duke 1390 for instance has a pretty damn ugly face but it oddly suits the monstrous nature of such a powerful naked bike. I don't think they should have used the same headlight on the 990 though.

Personally while I LOVE Honda's idea with an Eclutch I abhor losing the clutch lever altogether! DCT? great on a CAR but way too much extra WEIGHT on a motorcycle IMHO! I love the idea of just a few pounds of robo gear added that allows the bike's computer to operate the clutch or even shift gears IF desired and only when desired...but to totally get rid of clutch lever? NO! Get rid of shift lever? NO NO NO! NOT necessary! NOT appretiated one iota! Making bikes so complicated is only a good way of making high milage bikes too damn scary to even own which WILL pull the rug out from under resale values which I realise manufacturers likely LIKE. Just adding some servo motor modules that CAN operate the clutch or even operate the actual shift lever sound totally maintainable as opposed to integrated complete redesign of motor architecture I mean one could just turn servo motor option OFF if it starts acting up...maybe bolt on a new module....or NOT if it costs an arm and leg ....THUMBS DOWN on ingrained intrinsic complexity whatever that is called you know what I mean!! If it absolutely REQUIRES a dealer to deal with a new feature that fails or you cant ride the motorcycle? THAT is when you know it was a Baaaad idea

Nice, but it's going to be quite expensive. The current RT is already mid spec VW GOLF money down under (~40K in Aussie). This new 1300 might get close to a GTi. However, this also means a used 1200 or 1250 is going to be even more appealing in term of value for money. They are similar bikes in most areas, especially performance and practicality. Tech wise on models after 2014, they have pretty much everything a rider wants and needs. And they look modern enough for another 5 years I would say. Unless I hit the jackpot, I will go for a good example of 1200/1250.

Currently, I own the RT and a DCT Goldwing.
The ASA would definitely be welcomed because I'm not interested in manual gear shifting when I am on a long trip.
Furthermore, it's quite satisfying when you are the first one at the line & the traffic lights turn GREEN --- just fire off the DCT like you have Porsche Launch Ctrl. There's no comparison in this use case, no matter how skillful you are with a clutch because the DCT gears are always 100% aligned and the engine cannot stall. That's an extreme stress relief for such a heavy bike.

    • @alp3781

If you need the machine to shift itself either because (1) that's a 'stress relief' as compared to what it undergoes when you shift the gears yourself, or (2) you're simply not interested in manual gear shifting 'on a long trip'... well, I've gotta ask: why do you ride a motorcycle? Ohhh... I know: so you can have 'Porsche Launch Control' and massage your ego when you think that people are looking. And: HOW do you ride a motorcycle? Are you that unskilled that you stress your 'heavy bike' when manually letting out the clutch (remember what that is...?) from a standstill?
Here's an idea: Why don't you consider one of those bike-to-trike conversion kits so you can add a third wheel and do away with that thing called 'balancing' and that thing called 'leaning'?

  • @jimporter
    @jimporter 2 месяца назад +3

What those commentating on the recent spate of automatic bike announcements miss, is that this month in the EU and NI any new cars and lorries are required to have speed limiters and other tech (blind spot warning, lane keeping, etc). This does not apply to motorcycles yet as it was accepted that the technology isn’t there for bikes, yet. Expect to see pressure for the same legislation to start being applied to motorcycles in the next few years so the big boys are starting to prepare and adapt as this is much easier to do if the gearboxes can run in auto mode.

BMW is moving forward and staying competitive. So, will there be an option to have the automatic shifting as well as the clutch or are they doing away with manual shifting in this model all together? Personally, if a bike has a good clutch that does not tire our your wrist I actually like shifting and that is a fun part of motorcycling. However, for an RT bike and bikes like that I can see the point. I have an RS 1250 and I am interested to see if they make any changes to that bike besides giving in the new engine if they do.

I recon with Active cruise control on an automatic gearbox fired R1300RT You will be able to completely forget about gears once the active cruise will be activated. Cause the motorcycle will slow down and drop gear when the cars in front will slow down to prevent stalling the engine. And the same thing on the way but up to speed. Bike will be up shifts the gears so you won't have to think about that. The question is with the active braking will the bike be capable of stopping by itself and pulling away on its own as well?! What do You think Rob ? I will just say it is not for me. In a car active cruise is needed cause driving is something I need to do. Riding for me is for pleasure so taking the engagement out of riding by adding all that active stuff is not for me. Normal cruise control is ok everything else is just taking the fun of riding for me. But then I have never been on a straight road for longer than 50 minutes. So who knows maybe in America or Australia those systems will make sense

I have the 2024 R1250RT. I also have a Honda goldwing with DCT in the garage (mates bike) I would prefer to not have automatic gearbox if I did upgrade. In fact I had an order in for non DCT goldwing but bought the R1250RT instead. I like having the control and smoothness of shifting manually. The goldwing is good at it but you have to relearn how to control rolling off the throttle more smoothly. With a manual clutch the roll off of throttle is naturally quick. With DCT you must relearn to roll off slowly. Brain drain, especially when you are slowing down it’s for a maneuver of the bike which means I’d rather be naturally downshifting with little thought rather than relearning slowly rolling off while braking. The upside is the engine does a lot of breaking if you do roll off quick on DCT. I’m sure if I only drove DCT all the time it wouldn’t be a big deal. The brain would self adjust eventually.

Got myself a 2024 1250RT Option 719 after 2 GS & GSA. That knee angle plus the leaning forward position just doesn't work for me. I'm in such pain I have to return the bike after only 3900km on it. I'll most likely go back to a 1250GSA as I don't like the new 1300 (especially the side cases). Ik like the BMW RT serie very much for a couple of decades. What bothers me is the reliability of the electronic components as well as the increased weight of the R1300RT. I remember the abs 3 integral system from 2001 till 2007. It broke in France 400 km from home, remaining braking power was around 20%. Complicated, vulnerable and far too expensive to replace. Besides, 279 kilo is lot of weight if you've got to push it out of the garage. The GS 1300 lost 12 kilo, unfortunately the RT only gets heavier

I had RTs for the best part of thirty years. My riding needs changed, but also the RT started to become more expensive and lardier than I needed or wanted. I stopped with the 1250. When it came time to move on, Guzzi brought out the V100, so I switched with no regrets. This one is moving even further from the machine I want - I have no use for cruise control at all, let alone radar controlled and an auto? No, thanks, I'll pass.

And theoretically a computer with good sensors and servos should be totally able to outperform any human operator even for "slower speed control" electronic signals are speed of light human reaction time and reliable repeatable cooridination of inputs? Yeah not so much. Which is why I love the idea of Honda Eclutch...not ridiculously expensive and simply an add on electro mechanical optional MODULE! Turn it off and go old school....get tired or maybe injured? turn it on let the bike's ecu take care of you....plus IF it is less than stellar the FIRST year it is offered? You know like quick shifters, ABS, curise control, fueling etc etc it is only going to get better and better with time and competition!

I see tons of BMW riders out on the road enjoying their GSs, RTs, and GTs. I've talked to many and not one has ever mentioned horsepower as a top feature of the bike they are riding. Their riding pace generally would only require a 100 horsepower so perhaps more horsepower is primarily aimed at the more of the BMW customers who have to be seen on the latest and "improved " model.
The RT models starting from the R80RT have in my opinion devolved in styling. Today's watch words are "it looks better in person" or "the looks will grow on you". Great motorcycles all seem to be new car expensive but why is it they have to bland, unattractive or ugly?

design of the front of the bike will determine if it will sell or not. for example, current front design of RT feels already dated. feels like an old bike.. especially the headlights

One of the larger names in motorcycle reviews on youtube pointed out that weight savings with new 1300 GS line is fiction because according to them the new weight spec is for a model stripped of things the 1250 used to have as standard the point being if you compare like equipped 1300GS to like equipted 1250gs it is pretty much a wash....is this TRUE? And if it IS true would that really surprise anyone? More marketing gimmick sounds like. But even if there is not any significant HONEST weight reduction I suppose the newer models compactness at least should be legit and for certain of us coming in under average stature? THAT could be worth the price of admission all by it's lonesome! Eh?

Good vid. The RT most always follows the GS series intro. The chassis is much the same between the two. I don't see where the new RT deviates too far from the GS structure. I'm waiting on the RS version. All in time. They don't sell near as many but they have a lot of BMW heritage behind them and miles under my ass.

For a heavy lump I’d want a reverse gear on the New RT ! I’d not want a bike without a manual clutch as want a daily short run bike not one just set up for continental long miles
Angular lines not that attractive compared to flowing lines of current 1250 RT
Doubt on what I’ve seen I’d be holding my breath to wait for the new RT to come out and swop from my K16 GT
The 1300 GS is a contender for my money for a lighter do it all bike BUT of dear it just doesn’t have the appeal of a single sided swing arm Ducati multistrada 🤷‍♂️

No thanks, not for me! Too much tech equals too expensive to buy and maintain. Would you take the risk of owning it long-term i.e out of warranty? Most will be bought on PCP and changed before the warranty expires. I personally don’t like all the new tech and certainly don’t want an automatic twist and go. I’ll stick with my 2016 1200RT, minimum tech and simple and cheap to maintain (myself). And it does everything that this bike can do!

Seems like BMW is putting a lot of effort into making their bikes as ugly as possible. I don’t care how good the 1300 boxer engine is, the sheer ugliness, over complicated electronics and expensive gadgets are making it really easy for me to hold onto my 1250 for a few more years.
