Look, I love the guy, and he might be held by ROCK fans in the same esteem as Mozart and Chopin in the future, but in the classical world he's barely a blip on the radar, and if he's remembered for anything it will more likely be his cape over his musical chops. But that won't stop me from enjoying his music and lusting after some of his gear. : )
@@ProckGnosis No need to compartmentalize: classic, rock, who cares, both Mozart and Chopin would have been jamming this, and ole Ricky boy is (was) right up there. I'm with Burtrum and reckon JIscariot is one of the most stunning tracks penned.
@@ProckGnosis ~ Yep! You're correct about that. Too bad! l dont really like Chopin. Too sleepy. He is a _good_ composer! l like his stuff way better than Stravinsky ....but Zappa would disagree. Douglas Andresen Keith was more of a 'butcher' and I loved it! But, to me, he relied a bit too much on classics. Wakeman 'produced' more of his original music. Love them both.
+Buster Jones This has more Brahms but if you put Handel, Mozart, Bach, Beethoven and Emerson in the same room, the only survivors would be (in alphabetical order) Beethoven, Mozart and Wakeman. The only one I've seen play four and the quick fifth keyboard simultaneously is Rick. But glad you, too appreciate him!
My favourite symphonic piece from Rick's solo repertoire... I was blown away when I heard the lengthy original version on Criminal Record, many years ago, featuring a real church organ (the same as on Going For The One) . I do own some DVD's from Rick, but don't remember having this shortened version of "Judas Iscariot" anywhere.... I wonder where this comes from. I don't own everything, yet. it seems not very old.
This was, in the orginal version recorded in Vevey in the Church, one of the most fascinating pieces of music in my youth. Interesting video, thank you!👍
Rick Wakeman completely tore me apart with this piece back in the late 70s!.. Especially when this organ theme at a crescendo was included in the finale of the play “AT THE BOTTOM” by Gorky!...In the Kharkov Youth Theater, staged by A. Belyatsky...
since i first heard mr wakeman live 1973 with YES back when i was 14 he has always been the master of the keyboards in my humble opinion... pure genius...
there is nothing to compare between Rick Wakeman and Pink Floyd. Rick is the Master of the keyboards-. Pink Floyd was an excellent rock, prog rock band of the XX th Century
Amazing church organ sound! Although this is from Crimes of Passion, I remember the organ pieces on Six Wives was on the church organ at Cripplegate, London
I don't know about Andrew Lloyd Weber. All I know is that it is a nice shortened version of what I consider as Rick's masterpiece, better than anything he had done before. I prefer the original version but this is a very good performance of what seems to be a forgotten gem in his repertoire, while it's a great achievement in my humble opinion. But the right title is "Judas Iscariot", not "scariot"... Thank you for uploading it anyway. :)
Look before you leap ,, Wakeman wrote this during the Going For The One Sessions for Criminal Record with Yes in 1976 ... Weber got it from Rick if anything ... It's standard descending riff in the first place !!!!
With you on the McCartney thing...I just don't get it! His performance at the Olympics was frankly embarrassing. Wakeman is a true virtuoso, this is beautiful to hear and to watch.
@wizerulz It's funny you mention that. Turns out this guy accused him of "borrowing" the "Riff." I don't know if he actually sued or not. Roger Waters of Pink Floyd said the same thing about "Echoes." Lots of people accused Webber of plagarism.
If you listen about a minute in you can clearly hear the main 'Riff' used in Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'Phantom of the Opera'. Wakeman could legitimately sue Webber for plaguerism since Rick's piece was written several years earlier :-o
Besides, if that was the case, he should also be suing AniMusic because their song Harmonic Voltage has a few pieces that sound like parts of Judas Scariot, with the same sound effects and everything...but that would be ridiculous, right? I think so.
Obviously, webber has never written something himself. Listen to the melody after the each verse in Pink Floyd's echoes, and you will see its exactly the same as phantom of the opera main melody as well.
Agree with matemagyar, before, Webber, before Wakeman, that was Pink Flyod Echoes, quoting Rogers Waters on the stealing riff: "Andrew Lloyd fucking Webber" for not paying nothing for them.
Los Floyd nunca tuvieron a Rick. A esos merecían a Vangelis ...
Damn, I hope Wakey isn't reading all this "he's the best keyboardist ever" nonsense. He would die laughing, then proceed to name at least a hundred greater keyboardists in history off the top of his head. It's like Rush fans saying Neil Peart is the GOAT as a drummer. They obviously haven't heard of the many greater drummers who played. I'm a big Wakeman fan, but too many of you confuse "greatest" with "my favorite."
Andrew Lloyd Webber does not need to apologize for anything! I believe the limit is 9 different consecutive notes before it can be considered stolen. It's called "influence" people. Chill out! The man has numerous keyboards, you think he can afford to let it slide, already. Besides, music isn't meant to be a competition, it's supposed to bring EVERYONE together. Wakerman still has intense talent, regardless. I can only dream of performing on that many keyboards for one song. Brilliant!
There are only short segments in both works that resemble each other, and both segments are rather simple chromatic scale runs. Using scales is not and cannot be plagiarism, and even if it was then that would make Wakeman a plagiarizer too since he didn't write the chromatic scale. A musician of his caliber obviously knows this, and that is why he never sued.
music is always borrowed and repeated and used. I can count how many songs I hear that I'm like "Wait that sounds like (enter song name here)". But its when someone because as successful as ALW that people start to have a problem with it
Please why does everyone have to go on about the fairy tale so much?! You like it fine, but please, keep it to yourself. I too have an imaginary friend but he is the ghost of Bonzo's tech....lol.
Three points. One, you cannot steal a scale. Two, even if you could steal a scale, Pink Floyd did not write the chromatic scale. Three, even if playing a scale was considered stealing, Pink Floyd would be just as guilty as Webber.
A bit harsh! ALW has contributed much to theatre and music - but a genius such as Rick rarely comes along - from grass roots to orchestras - and those in the know can reap the benefit - it pains me that mediocre talents such as 'sir' Paul McCartney get knighted - but that's only my opinion :)
In 100 years Rick Wakeman will be held in the same esteem as Mozart and Chopin. One of the greatest musicians of my generation.

Hardly. He just uses the same harmonic patterns that fall under the hand easily. He is no Mozart or Beethoven
It's amazing how wholesome his sound is. Along with Tony Banks and Keith Emerson the absolute best of our contemporaries!
that brain and those hands worth milions...Long Live Rick Wakeman.
Nobody on the planet has ever had such mastery of a keyboard as Wakeman. Save for Bach and Mozart.

But they were also friends. And take note that lyricist Tim Rice worked with both of them.

Rick Wakeman :D
👍👍👍👍👍
Correct! Bach would have used it long before Rick or Floyd :)
Obviously, webber has never written something himself. Listen to the melody after the each verse in Pink Floyd's echoes, and you will see its exactly the same as phantom of the opera main melody as well.
