    While I'm in the crowd who really likes Doom Eternal for what it is, the points you've made are pretty fair and most of it I do agree on.
    Sorry that you've had to deal with such a hard time getting this video done, but I believe it turned out well.

    Eternal's meant to look like Classic Doom, which is why the Slayer in Eternal looks like the Doom Marine. Also, no one plays Doom for the story. Doom was never about story.

    Huge Doom fan and Eternal fan here. I actually agree with a lot of what you have to say. Eternal let me down in some major ways.
    There is definitely an unexplained time jump between 2016 and Eternal and I wish there wasn't. Where did Samuel teleport us to is my biggest question.
    I'm fine reading the codexes to learn about the Hell Priests, the Betrayer, the Maykrs, etc., because that's what they're there for. 2016 had that too, granted the story was much simpler and not as sprawling. "Science fantasy" is a VERY accurate way to describe Eternal, love it or hate it.
    Eternal's guns do sound weaker unfortunately. The assault rifle and even super shotgun sound very weak in comparison to their 2016 versions.
    On level design, oh man, Eternal is MUCH more linear. I wish it had the open exploration of 2016. I miss the Foundry :/
    While enemies do have specific weaknessess, you can kill every enemy with every gun. It's not a hard locked system, it's more like recommendations. I highly disagree the game is boring, but it *is* still prone to exploits like 2016 unfortunately, even with the lower ammo. Doom 2016 is actually harder in terms of raw enemy damage.
    Anyway, that's all my thoughts. Have a good one, and let's hope the next Doom makes everyone happy 👍

    Having played Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal over the years, Doom Eternal really only reminds me why level design is so important for a game, first-person shooters included. There really isn't anything in the levels in Doom Eternal that encourages replay value beyond just getting the collectibles you missed. Not many big game changer secrets to find, levels that are just places for arenas to exist (isn't one of the levels just chunks of rocks of Mars making up the level design), there kind of isn't anything else to the game beyond the core gameplay loop. Like you can find gore nests to get more upgrades but you're just doing more arena combat like you always have, the repetition kicks in so soon with Doom Eternal. I can get some enjoyment out of the game but I can't help but to feel the game can be much more than just betting on the gameplay loop to keep you interested the whole time.
    The bosses suck too, they are awful. The DLCs are not worth playing at all either.

    So I haven't played this yet, only a bit of the first one--but I do want to defend the new armor. You point out the exposed arms, but exposed arms are extremely common on troops. You can go as far back as the Roman Legionnaires and the modern infantry, it's nothing new. Exposed arms, legs even the face, all common throughout the history of warfare.

    • @Bread_Bug
      @Bread_Bug Год назад

      That’s all true, and I like the look of the new armor, but it doesnt really make sense as space marine armor for me. I get that it doesnt really matter for doomguy since he’s like, an unkillable god or something, but for any other space marine exposed arms would be a terrible idea. Idk, maybe he modified it to free his massive guns lol

  • @uhrguhrguhrg
    @uhrguhrguhrg 3 года назад +4

    A few random points I'd like to mention.
    I feel like the plot is filled with too much pandering at some points. Like the whole scene when doomguy grunts out "rip and tear". Doom 4 managed to be self aware without being annoying, which I think doom 5 failed at by leaning too far into the "haha gaming am I right fellow kids".
    Doom 5 is too bright and colorful at some points, but doom 4 is also sometimes too monotone. A middle ground would have been nice.
    I don't really agree with the point about the strategy you described making doom 5 broken when doom 4 isn't. Simply because of the existence of the "Rich get richer" rune that made you have infinite ammo when over an armor threshold. You could just forever fire the chaingun killing demons before they could even try damaging you.
    Another thing to mention is the inclusion of the quickswapping as an intentional mechanic in doom 5. You can very quickly deal a lot of damage by switching between weapons immediately after firing. Works especially great with ballista, rocket launcher and the super shotgun.
    The ammo wasting point is also inconsequential since the ammo is virtually infinite through the regenerating chainsaw fuel and infinitely spawning fodder demons.
    I've had a lot more fun in doom 5 after finding about the quickswapping.

  • @andrewrogers3067

    Solid review overall but I have one critique. You say being able to cheese the game with a certain setup that a player may not come across on their first playthrough made the game boring. I would argue two things, one you don't have to use that setup or playstyle if you find it boring, and two, one of your favorite games also has a cheese strat that makes the game quite easy (Hint: We always talk about it) so I'm wondering what's the difference between that and Doom 5.

    • @ContraWolf
      @ContraWolf  3 года назад +2

      The difference between doom 5 and armored Core is that I don't consider using human plus as a way of cheesing out the game. In fact I kind of needed those upgrades.
      Also I did actually say what would happen if I didn't use that setup. I would just be sitting there wasting a whole bunch of ammo on every enemy while they ripped into me
      Either way it would be incredibly boring and infuriating if I didn't use that method
      Also armored Core didn't totally shaft a great game that got released before it so that kind of helps too

    Hey bud been awhile. Your 10+ year fan returns haha. Anyway I have to agree with your review overall. While I still enjoyed the visceral carnage of the game and fast paced shooting, dismembering and destruction I have to say by the time the credits rolled I was feeling pretty damn tired of the game. It gets repetitive fast. Here are my main issues with Doom Eternal (aka Doom 5).
    1) The platforming sections. For the most part it frustrated the hell out of me. I didn't like it and it felt out of place in a Doom game. I understanding wanting to mix up the gameplay and break up the relentless action but in my opinion it hurts the game and really drags down the experience. This is Doom, not Super Metroid or Mario.
    2) The cartoony aesthetics. Compared to Doom 4 (Doom 2016) this looks way too colorful and it loses much of the grit and darker vibes of the previous game. In that respect I prefer Doom 4.
    3) How you HAVE to kill certain enemies with certain weapons or you will get your ass handed to you. I miss the days where you're simply given a few badass guns and go to town on them without a complicated combat system. I think Doom 5 got TOO complicated with the combat. There's way too many options. I just want to blast demons in the face without all this unnecessary window dressing.
    So yeah not a bad game by any means. With that said I like Doom 4 more when you take into account the experience as a whole. They made some missteps with Eternal and it really hurts the game. I don't regret playing through it, including the Ancient Gods DLC, but I do hope the next installment returns to its darker roots and not so cartoony and over the top.

    Counting the fact that, if you actually want to play in nightmare or more difficult modes, you've to basically always keep your index, middle and anular on WASD, the pinkie on ctrl/shift and the thumb on the spacebar to keep on moving, your mouse would need many more lateral buttons to actually use all the abilities NEEDED to actually fight well, even more in the DLCs.
    Yes, I've not properly played Doom Eternal for so long that I've lost skills in it, but even if I didn't it would still hold true that to ACTUALLY play well you basically need a MOBA mouse.

    i respect if you don’t like the game, but i think objectively it isn’t really a disappointment, firstly i do agree with your point about the levels being really small but i found it weird how with quake 4 you said the levels where linear but flowed really well, and quake 1 &2 where known for having maze like levels like doom or Wolfenstein, secondly no the weak points recommended aren’t the only way to kill enemies, sure it helps but with alot of them you can ignore the weak points if you use weapon mods or blood punch and things like that, also you cant really go through the whole game just using the grenades, it works for fader enemies but when you get to stronger enemies in the later levels they require you to experiment with guns more or more around more, lastly doom 2016 had major dominant strategy issues regarding the super shotgun, fully upgrading that made the game very boring because it was so powerfull, sure you could just not use it but by that logic you also dont need to use the extra lives.
    Also doom 2016 difficutly felt really unfair on higher difficulties, especially in the earlier levels where imps can kill you so quick with fireballs, the extra lives in eternal give you a great second chance if you mess up and save your ass while allowing you to get back into the fight, the added movement also gives you better ways to avoid damage that 2016 didn’t give you, i cant comment on the story part because frankly i had no interest in it but i found some issues in things you said about the games gameplay, like i said if you don’t like it thats ok but it seemed more like you were trying to pass it off as facts like the game is objectively garbage

    • @RynoIncognito
      @RynoIncognito 2 года назад +1

      I played Doom 2016 on medium (Hurt Me Plenty), and the game was not that difficult; Eternal's Hurt Me Plenty mode ramped up in difficulty. In which case, hitting the weak points are practically a must if you don't want to die or get by while using as little of ammo as possible.
      Extra lives were never a staple of Doom since the first ever game from 1993, and they did not belong in a Doom game, let alone Eternal; they were just an excuse to increase the difficulty rather than properly designing the game. If you wanted extra lives to help you in a pinch, you may as well lower the difficulty at that point, or play an arcade game instead.
      If you couldn't avoid damage because of a lack of added movement (which I didn't experience), it was likely because Doom 2016 required you to be on the constant move when enemies are on you and know how they attack; you can't exactly go into fights with tunnel vision.
      You don't HAVE to use the super shotgun throughout; the other weapons aren't there to NOT be used. You shouldn't need a game to engineer you to use weapons because you somehow didn't feel compelled to use them.
      Also, if you want to talk about people passing of points as fact, why not point the finger at those doing the same about Doom Eternal like they think it's Jesus Christ incarnate?
      I'm willing to bet we'd be fighting over this like no tomorrow because that's the extent of how people have gone after each other over whose right or wrong about Eternal being objectively better or worse than Doom 2016-- it's a case of the left and right sides fighting over wanting what they want, not wanting what their opposition wants, and not wanting their opposition to have what they want.

    • @AlexPinna531
      @AlexPinna531 2 года назад +1

      @@RynoIncognito ammo isnt really something you need to manage in eternal, the chainsaw regenerates so if you use it right you wont ever run out, secondly i was talking more doom 2016 on nightmare difficulty, i agree on hurt me plenty its easy but on nightmare it feels like you die way to quick in unfair ways that eternal fixes with movement systems like the dash, also weak points are more of an option really, for example the arachnotron can be killed easily with micro missiles and the gatlin rotator, plus you dont really need to use extra lives either, if you did then why arent they in ultra-nightmare? also i tried moving as much as possible in 2016 and rarely stopped but the fireballs always seemed to instantly track and kill me somehow, i do understand what u mean by people arguing whos right or wrong but im arguing that i think if you are going to say something is objectively bad you need to make sure what you are saying is correct, ill have to replay 2016 on nightmare to make sure i am correct on what i said and if i am not then i own up that i should have looked in it more

    • @RynoIncognito
      @RynoIncognito 2 года назад +1

      @@AlexPinna531 So basically, the chainsaw has become the reload button. Doom 3 was the only game to have a reload feature, but Eternal was made around the original games' foundation of no reloading, just like Doom 2016 was. Also, it also takes away the charm of doing chainsaw kills because you're no longer doing it to see what kind of kills you can do with it (with the ammo being an added convenience), you're doing it for the sake of desperately farming ammo, especially considering that Eternal's ammo pickups have been greatly reduced to the point of being nearly non-existent (so yeah, you do have to manage it in a way). It's less fun and more routine, thus wearing itself thin and becoming repetitive.
      The weak points aren't just an option, because when it comes to maximizing your best possible options for simple survival, conserving resources for the next fight onward, or what have you, the weak points, no matter how optional they are, will always become a necessary target.
      Eternal's Ultra-nightmare was designed with permadeath in mind, so removing lives makes sense for that purpose.
      And to be blunt, if I didn't need to use extra lives, they wouldn't be in the game to begin with, nor would the game be designed around them.
      You could say the imps are predicting your moves, and you kinda have to accommodate for that. Other than that, I always thought that the hard difficulty and above in Doom 2016 were functioning as any hard difficulty level relatively would-- faster, stronger, harder-hitting enemies and the like.
      But yeah, there you go.

    • @AlexPinna531
      @AlexPinna531 2 года назад +1

      @@RynoIncognito the chainsaw really is more convenient than having to look for pickups, in the old doom games if you ever ran out of ammo you either had to backtrack or rely on running away from enemies or just restarting the level, doom eternals chainsaw serves many uses, it gives you ammo so no need to backtrack and to get the ammo you actively have to go in and get an enemy for the ammo, it also allows you to have a second to breath in the middle of combat and it can be used on bigger enemies which gives cool animations, so you can technically still see what kind of cool kills you can get by using it at the right moment against an enemy, also if you get the upgrade you can also get ammo from explosive barrels and later on from the mayker drones with a headshot, also the weak points dont need to be used if you manage to use your weapons to deal enough damage, sure it helps but with the example of the cacodemon you dont need to shoot a grenade in its mouth, its actually better to use a ballista shotgun combo because it closes the gap with the meathook and insures a high amount of damage, plus you need to be very accurate with the sticky grenade to get it in its mouth so its less convenient because if you are being attacked you dont the advantage of using the meathook to escape and you need to be accurate, and since you get back ammo through the ways i listed it isnt really wasting it since you have ways to get it back, if you use the tutorials as a start point but also experiment and find new ways to kill enemies the sandbox of options opens up in eternal, its fine if you dont like it but it does offer up many options besides weak points, also extra lives arent really necessary because you die anyway you go back to the start of the arena, yeah its kinda annoying but its better i think than games like megaman where you have to start the whole level over if you have no extra lives

    The problem I have with this review is that you said you cheesed the game by finding an exploit that only works in the lower difficulties. I could tell you were playing on a low difficulty because the AI was less aggressive. The difficulty changes the rate in which the AI are prone to attacking you on top of their speed in trajectory; you're gonna have a tough time trying to use only one weapon in the whole game when you decide to play it on the highest difficulty the game offers. Also, the game does not let you keep extra lives in Ultra-Nightmare; Ultra-Nightmare replaces the extra lives with extra armor, and you can't leave a level and farm extra lives even if you could.
    Storywise, I can agree with you on how it breaks its pacing by forcing the important questions of the plot on the Codex, but I can't agree with you on how it doesn't answer any questions from the previous game because they do. It's just in the Codex where you have to find them, and so it's a problem for someone who doesn't wanna read paragraph after paragraph of content just to understand what the hell happened between the previous entry and this one.
    I will agree that the last two bosses were frustrating.
    All in all, I think this game just wasn't made for you to play it in a low difficulty, and I recommend you do so you can experience the gameplay at its fullest.

      Oh hey there, sorry for taking so long to get back to you, I've been a little busy the past few days. Anyways…
      First off, I'm playing on Ultraviolence. I would hardly consider that a low difficulty and I have no intention of playing it on Ultra nightmare. In fact I don't intend to play this game ever again.
      As far as the story goes, where exactly in the codex did it answer all of these questions? I browsed through the entire codex and didn't find a single answer to anyone of my questions. I don't mind reading certain things to find out certain pieces of the backstory if I'm interested enough in the game (that's why Doom 4 was so great) but when a game forces me to read paragraph after paragraph of text just to find out answers to questions it intentionally left unanswered, that's a massive turn away for me.

      Sure, no problem if you don't wanna play the game again. Totally understandable.
      I'll watch your video again when I've got some free time and look for the Codex entries that answer those questions. I will agree that DOOM 2016 is a better written story because it maintains simple cohesion that you don't have to outright question every day unless you go to the Codex entry, but I kinda like the Codex entry in Eternal. Pretty interesting lore, despite the outright retcons they had to do (an example of this is reading the invisible pinky entry in DOOM 2016 in contrast to DOOM Eternal's.

    For a game that people have been saying it has good combat, it gets old really quick. Im really not sure why the devs thought limiting themselves this much in the creation of the gameplay was a good idea for example how the cacodemon is pretty tanky but is oneshot by a grenade. The intention of making the gameplay be so involved in gun switching was abit methodical was really boring because youll pretty much be doing just that for the entirety of the game.
    The story on the other hand is horrible and it gets way worse in the DLC. Not only does the story in this game has no connection to DOOM 4 but in the DLCs, they completely destroyed the sole reason on why people liked the concept of Doomslayer/Doomguy as whole.
    I wasnt expecting much from DOOM Eternal but man i think ive been more let down with it than i am happy.

      I have been watching you for 3 years, you love to complain and your points are often poorly thought out or just lazy. Complaining for the sake of complaining.

    I think they made like a fps shump, and if you like the way the game is meant to be played it can be great (and by the way almost every title has a way to cheat it), but it's not great when you want it to be like every other oldschool fps. i found a way to help, firstly in the settings you can change the speed for the weapon wheel and also two of the buttons on the dpad are used for tutorials and switching grenades, i recommend rebinding the tutorial one to your favourite weapon to switch to, and switch the button for swapping grenades with L3 and use the dpad for another weapon, also use r1 to quickswap and it should be fine

No. It works for a good pacing, specially when you are doing platforming to keep the engagement. Its very different to Doom 4, but IS better. I didn't even like Doom 4 personaly; this ' 'get locked into a room and fight wave after wave of enemy so that you can move foward' ' got sooooo fucking tedious. The ost was awful to listen to and the game has weapon upgrade...because of course! Every FPS under the sun nowadays has weapon upgrade so of course Doom 4 would have those too.
    I actualy had to foce myself to play to the end, and after i did so, i never played this game ever again. So obviously, i didn't have any interest in Doom Ethernal. No amount of fan service that id shove into this game will ever get me to change my mind. My personal recomandation will be: get Prodeus. It's a Doom-like style indie game that understand Doom better than id Software themself.
    Also, good video as always, keep it up!

  • @josephsilo187

    I have to disagree with you on this one. Doom 5 encourages so many different strategies to play with that you can glide around every arena while never taking a hit and killing everything in a matter of seconds. You played it in the most safe and reserved way possible, which is why it was boring to you. After beating Doom 5 on Ultra Nightmare, going back to Doom 4 and playing it the way I played Doom 5 made Doom 4 stupidly easy on Ultra Nightmare in comparison. Doom 5 is one of the few FPS games that innovated on the FPS genre.

    • @RynoIncognito
      @RynoIncognito Год назад

      So it was boring because Contra played it the way he wanted to play it? And yet that's somehow not valid to you?
      Also, Doom Eternal feels like it should be its own game, not a Doom game-- almost every change it made made it practically unlike ALL Doom games before it. Doom 2016 was like the old Doom games, and what few good changes Eternal made does not make up for the rest of the changes that made me feel like I was lied to.
      Doom Eternal didn't innovate nothing; all it did was cater to a completely different demographic who would spit on the original games because of their age.

    Okay, this game is not perfect by any means and many people upon its release hated it bcuz its not doom 4.2 or doom 2016.2 if you know what i mean, also for me this is the only game that honestly i felt that was polished, well balanced and has flexibility since it can offer players different play style and Still introduces STRATEGY AND QUICK THINKING but the catch of this is you do it without stopping and as time goes by playing this it gives you that practice to be alert and creative at the same time, in short it all becomes a muscle memory to the player, THE STORY while its really bad honestly and it almost expects you to believe its BS i gotta say it almost felt i played the game for the plot, its a great experience and a perfect "shutting my brain with dumb sh*t" moment and the good part about it is YOU CAN SKIP CUTSCENES AND GIVES YOU OPTIONS TO NOT GIVE A SH*T ABOUT IT there unlike.... Well CALL OF DUTY MAYBE? The game you despise and hate? , also to add to my edit THE Marauders for me is the best mirror challenge to any players going in to the game and i might defend him here too, honestly IF YOU DONT GET GOOD AND LEARN!?, you cant beat this guy....and i love it but cant beat, him on nightmare but i almost had on THAT difficulty in every reply or run.
    Anyways great review though i understand u dont like the game but sorry ITS SAD THAT YOU DIDN'T AND I DONT PITTY YOU, I FIND YOU POOR THOUGH.

    ...going into a story with a seies5of questions being presented is perfectly normal and more so, if they're explained during the story, itself.
    I'm not clear why you approach this concept like it's somehow poor story telling, just as you don't understand exactly why what you're seeing, is as it is.

    • @majema007
      @majema007 3 года назад

      Problem is that the story doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, even to people who played DOOM 2016.
      And throwing in tons of Codex entries with the expectation that people who might be interested in the lore will take the time to read it all doesn’t make sense for a game designed around fast pace combat. This isn’t a slower paced action RPG like Mass Effect, where it makes sense to have long breaks during combat sections and fleshes out its own universe during gameplay (while Codex entries serve as a way to flesh out the universe more, not something mandatory to understand what’s happening).
      Sure you can make the argument that people could do read the entries in the main hub, but that still leaves the problem that this isn’t an effective way to tell a story in a video game. I’m not against reading codex entries, but I don’t imagine most people would be reading them over discovering secrets in the hub or just playing with the main combat. And like I mentioned, the ones who do are doing it as pure busywork since Eternal doesn’t bother expanding most of its lore via gameplay.
