  • Remaining in active service until right before the outbreak of the Second World War, the Bristol F2b would gain a reputation as the best two-seater fighter of the First World War, before serving a long career in the British, Polish, and New Zealand Air Forces.

A wonderful, first-person autobiographical account of a Canadian pilot during the war is a must read on this aircraft "Flying Minnows" Vivian Voss (pseudonym).

I think i can honestly be said that the BE2 was out of date and outperformedby the enemy at its introduction. Recconaisance, light bomber, fighter. I think that makes the F2b the original MRCA.

I mean, if you want to ignore it track record, performance, and combat ability then sure, I guess that opinion makes sense

Why was the bottom wing not attached to the body? Was it for greater lift?

It was done to maintain the right gap between the wings while keeping the upper wing level with the pilot's eyes, thus giving a good view both above and below it.
