Taiji Chuan for beginners takes you through the Chen style form, also known as the canon fist. The Chen form has an old frame and a new frame form.
In this video Master Wong is performing the new frame canon Fist form and has separated the form into 8 parts in this series for you to learn.
Chen style is much more challenging compared to the 24 - Yang style. Yang has much slower movements and less demanding then Chen. Chen consists of fast control movements mixed in with some slower movements with jumps and turns, from low to high. Practicing this form will defiantly get your heart pumping and build stronger legs.
The Chen style was the first ever TaiJi form created, followed by Yang, Sun, Wu and Ng. The creator Chan San Feng used TaiJj for combat purposes. The Yang family later transferred it’s training methods for health benefits.
Benefits of taiji Chuan
The form will help you learn to maintain balance when moving in combat lines. It will help you develop better posture and use your strength internally, using power that you’ll never new existed inside you. Most strike can be devastating when hits land on the body. Researchers have found that Tai Chi practice shows favorable effects on the promotion of balance control, flexibility, and cardiovascular fitness. Tai Chi has stood the test of time, millions upon millions of people practice Tai Chi to keep themselves young in body and mind and have been doing so for thousands of years. Tai Chi unifies body, mind and energy and nurtures every part of ourselves.

Wing Chun Tai Chi JKD - Master Wong Master Wong
Thank you for showing us the Yang Style of Taichi. I know that the 漢字 for Taiji is 太極 but is the 漢字 for Yang? 謝謝
Wing Chun Tai Chi JKD - Master Wong thanks
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Thank you master Wong.
Coming from Yang Tai Chi (practising for 7 years) I can
easilly pick up on this. Also because you show it clear and precise.
Have memorised the whole form and now working on hand positions, transitions from one stance to the other and power generation.
Already feel increased power, overall health and flow of chi.
Thank you again, David from Amsterdam
I really respect Master Wong simply because of his vigor, fearless demeanor and enthusiam for the "arts"
No the guys not perfect ,and he "brags a little" ,,,but so what .I sense that he's a good guy,a no nonsense working class guy ,who has worked hard on his Kung Fu,,,loves what hes doing ,wants to share it and teach. No hes not some lofty "master" high on a hill but,,,you gotta give it to the guy ,,,HE LOVES WHAT HES DOING, and obviously put in the time to attain this skill level.I believe he has had some great teachers. In my mind his greatest gift is that he has taken the trouble to put these videos up and has introduced 1000sands of people to Kung Fu ,who probably never considered studying in the "arts".So my hat goes off to good old "Master Wong" way over across the pond,,,,dont ever change,,,DD in L.A.
Thank you for taking the time to make these videos and sharing them with us. You demonstrate and break down the movements in a way that makes it very easy to learn. I am really enjoying learning this form and look forward to learning the others that you posted in the near future. I cannot thank you enough, Master Wong!
@kameshita Try practicing one move at a time and at the SLOWEST pace that you can do. Repeat each move at least a dozen times before moving on to the next. Do that every day and improvements would be noticeable after about 8 weeks, I promise you ;-)
I see people criticize Master Wong’s Taiji performance occasionally. Of all the teachers and students of Taiji that I’ve seen, Master Wong is the only one who teaches a form (detailed, step by step, btw) along with solid real world applications based off of it, not a bunch of showy tricks that would only work on a completely cooperative opponent. Do what I do, get together with martial artists from your area, and beat the crap out of each other sparring and doing self defense sets. You’ll find out real quick whether you’re on the right path and whether or not you know what you think you know. I want only what works, that’s why I’ll take what Master Wong is offering any day. I agree, Master Wong's style isn't what the masses are used to seeing... maybe it should be.
Although it looks like Master Wong can probably fight, I have never seen a video in which he does what you claim. His partners cooperate in that they do the attack that he tells them to do. They also way over commit, which would be fine if the attack was like most real criminal attacks, at surprise. Master Wong also violates many principles of tai chi. This is not to sat that he cannot fight; there are other ways of fighting than tai chi.
As for me, I freestyle fight with my teacher, my students and my peers using tai chi all of the time. You are right in that this is rare. However, I have not seen it from Master Wong. Please let me know if there is a video of master Wong on RUclips doing some freestyle fighting.

Master Wong doesn't teach fighting (online, anyway), he teaches self defense... there's a big difference between the two. Fighting, is two opponents that have committed for the long haul. Self defense, however, is when one person tries to hurt the other, the victim defends so as to escape or diffuse the situation through administering pain. Martial artists always confuse point sparring, sparring, fighting and self defense, considering them all the same thing, which they are not.
I would like to see Master Wong throw down in a sparring match to. His self defense techniques are good and they work, but we may never know his caliber as a fighter. Who cares really, what he does offer is valuable enough by its self.
Notable people in history, did just that, they violated the principles of their subject of interest and developed something great.
merqava amen
New TCC students should decide how deeply they want to study the martial art. If you're only interested in the health benefits, you can learn from anyone. If you are interested in a full, comprehensive course beyond the initial health benefits and acquiring even greater health and vitality, then pursue the full spectrum: sparring, fighting technique, applications, flexibility training. Do not be swayed by opportunistic charlatans. They abound by the dozens nowadays. Seek out a genuine master.
I see this is extremely difficult when you have never seen this before, but it helps to see this over and over again. Wow, I know so much more now.
In the first moves you slide away a punch, punch a stomach, break someone's elbow and stamp a foot, and from there you continue.. Don't do this with too much intention haha.
Hi Master Wong. Did you know there is a high level Chen style Tai Chi master in Manchester called Wang Hai Jun. Worth taking a class with him if you are interested in learning in a traditional lineage. Keep up the great work promoting Taijiquan and other martial arts.
I purchased this vid set a while back and I love it! I opted to start with Chen rather than Yang style. I have to admit though, I am having a very difficult time getting the motions right. For an uncoordinated klutz like me, Tai Chi is very difficult. lol But that is why I am trying to learn it, so that maybe someday I will no longer be such an uncoordinated klutz!
breathing while moving, mind and body must be one, focusing on what you are doing while you do it is also a key to doing it properly. if you do this on a mechanical level, and your mind is somewhere else, the move won't be right and it'll take little effect.
no disrespect to Master Wong, he's pro in this, and he's very experienced instructor, i'm not trying to act smart, i'm just putting out some pointers i think that matter. Thank you Master Wong for this lesson.
master Wong you may hero!
Love this whole form. When I compare it to the Chen style 56 performance form it is actually very similar but this style holds much more of the material meaning
When you practice, you practice when you practice, then you practice when you practice
This is very good i use to do Shaolin Kung Fu but i moved away from any dojos, my only recommendations are that my master use too use the names of all the different steps and it helped me remember the forms
I agree with you..... I'm doing Tai Chi for a while, but I already know what kind of base you need to start with Tai Chi practicing. The movements in Tai Chi should be based on the silk reeling principle when executing it. His waist for example should be circling (at least a little bit, depends on the kind of movement).
I don't know if he has a video with explanations about the base of Tai Chi, but he should explain that first (if not done yet), before teaching his so-called Chen Style Tai Chi.
And that's how you do it haha that music and flowing intensity was sick
Which came first? Tai Chi Chuan for war or health? In the case of all martial arts, especially TCC, evolution progressed out of a vital need for self-defense. Contrary to uninformed popular notions, all styles of TCC are a branch of the entire spectrum of Shaolin Kung Fu (Wushu). It stands to reason that warriors working out using martial arts developed strong physiques over time. My first Sifu once said: "Learn applications. Learn other martial arts. Learn that TCC can kill. Learn to be kind."
If you want to learn the combat part of Tai Chi, then Master Wong is absolutely the best I have seen, but when it comes to teaching Tai Chi from the ground, then he is not the best, and I think it is because he is doing the movements too fast, and then he do not repeat them very much. Anyway a training session directly at his training facilities could absolutely be useful.
He has the original Chen style on his website. This is a mix more or less it almost looks like it's Chen, Yang, and Chi, Na all together
Its a very 'peuhticular' style of Chen Taichi the way you perform.
@Oliiiverr There are two branches of Taiji Lineage: The Wudang Monestary & Chen Village lineages. Up to the 9th generation Chen style was combative and external (Waijia). Chen Wang Ping (1600-1682), a reknown Warrior, taught himself Internal Boxing (neijia) for health/cultivation and combined it with his families original waijia (Pugilistic) style. By the 14th Generation Chen Chang Xing had inherited the hard/soft internal boxing style we recognize today and transmitted it to Yang Lu Ch'uan.
@Oliiiverr The Wudang lineage is sourced from the Sage Chang San Feng who articulates a summary of Fu Xi's pre-natal triagram depicting the Taijitu/Eight Cosmic Changes/Five Elemental Phases which constitute his and the Chen Lineage's physical manifestation of the 13 Methods. These methods and the Seven Stars are the foundation of all Taiji Styles. In this lineage health and cultivation were central due to Taoist values but both lineages seek to possess the 3 Treasures: Jing, Qi, Shen (health)
thank you for sharing this video with all of us
While this guy looks good aesthetically to the untrained eye, what he is doing isn't real Chen style taichi. He probably did do a course in Chen style, and he definitely has gongfu in other areas. Just not quite taichi though. So to all those who think his style looks peculiar, stiff or weird, that's the reason. I doubt he's done Chen style for even more than 1 year.
Yes, I agree. Master Wang seems to have some type of background in external martial arts and does an imitation of tai chi chuan that can fool people who do not know much about it. Looks like he can fight too, but, he would be helpless against any genuine master of an internal martial art. Internal arts art designed to beat athletic fighters who are not relaxed, sunk, empty and balanced. Takes a long time to get good though and one needs to study with someone who really has it.
It has the basic motions of old frame, but looks soo soo strange in the areas where it differs. Like hes modified the form to better fit his style.
Does it really matter? This is what we're doing now. With the same fundaments, I might add. My Sifu told us that level 1 in this family style, will take an intensive training of at least 4 years, due to it's complexity and details.
I'm very gratefull that Mr. Wong took the time to guide us, in what else most of us would learn once a week. I'd wish he did more of these videos, rather than just the Wing Chung we see lately.
have you seen his older clips dating 7+ years back? i didnt think so
No. Go away.
Awesome lesson,thank you
great teacher and wonderful art!
Not true Tai Chi was originally developed for combat especially the Chen style. It's just been adapted for health.
This is very awesome ! You are so flexible, Master Wong ! Can you help us by providing us with applications of this chen style in combat?
Very nice Master Wong
Very nice instructive video *^o^* Thank you very much for this post!!!
Master Wong, could you into the opening and closing movements of the joints and chi?
I have one question with this series, are this videos mirrored so I do them exactly as If your back was facing the camera or I have to mirror myself all of your movements? because if this are not mirrored then I've learned a lot the opposite way of doing it. Thanks!
hey buddy, a little late here, hope your interest in taichi hasnt diminished yet, haha. but anyway, so this goes for any kind of practice, especially ones that are straneous to certain muscle groups; as a general rule of thumb, you should always train everything you can on both sides. always. cartwheel, flips, splits, kicks, punches, forms. with video tutorials like this, i would advice running through them a couple times as if they are mirrored, as that will most likely be easier to grasp for the brain in the beginning, and then working on being able to do it on the other side, and eventually working towards being equally proficient on both sides. this will not only help with avoiding muscle imbalance, but with working out the brain too. to my understanding, tai chi in itself is about balancing things out. so both sides should help with that as well :)
hope it helps! :)
@JLCritchley Imagine you are standing behind Master Wong. In other words, you would not be mirroring his moves, but imitating exactly as he moves. Looking at the video, if he moves his leg/arm to YOUR left he is actually moving his right arm/leg out to HIS right. If you were to stand behind him you would also be moving your right arm/leg to the right. Be patient! Don't rush! Don't jump lessons. Practice! Go slowly and learn the form in all its minutae. Pay careful attention to the Fa Jing.
how to know which left or right moving leg and hand..?
i like tai chi
Awesome thank you
I do believe that is the style chen
@maccatheguitarist As far as I could tell, this is a modified version of the first 5 movements of Lao Jia Yi Lu (Old Frame, First Routine). Very distinctive, very different from traditional version, though.
for you is simple
I work at golds gym as a janitor, a man named khon comes in most nights and sometimes he will go into the spin bike room and do this with the lights off, although he does regular exercises as well he does this too, is it supposed to be a form of mediation maybe? becuase it seems very relaxing, and i would like to start doing this
I have a question about the Jin Gang Dao Dui form, when you hit the fist and stomp the foot, I never see masters like Chen Xiaowang or Chen Zhenglei bring their feet so far apart in a horse stance, it's usually very close, barely shoulder width apart..
Merci beaucoup de ce partage !
@Chexpeare i have meditated for about a year now. this is supposed to be done as a meditation too right? and i want to learn it as a martial art and for health benefits. should i learn from videos like this while im here in WA til i go back to texas. I will be taught by Master Cheng Jincai of the 18th generation Grand master Chen Zhaokui.
Thank you Master Wong, a bit difficult your first lesson for an absolute beginner like me. What i take from your lesson is turning the body etc.

Could you explain me something about the application of hitting the fist on the palm in mabu?
@Oliiiverr The definitive book is Grandmaster Chen Xin's "Illustrated Explaination of Chen Family Taiji Quan". It states that internal alchemy is the source of power for the 13 methods of Taiji Quan: Wuji, Taijitu, 3 Treasures, Lesser and greater Yin/Yang, 5 Elemental phases, 8 Cosmic Changes, 9 Hands Cuts and the 10000 things of Heaven and Earth. Taiji Quan is the martial expression of taoism whose goal is maintaining harmony (inner/outer) through neutralizing anything disturbing harmony.
does it work if your body position is not exactly right place but you do those movements
Thank you master wong

Nice nice niiiice!!! Thank You!
Thank you...
good
At 2:13 he's double weighted..... no internal movement..... he does the hand circles right, but there's no internal movement
hands look right, but somethings wrong..... old musician 25 yrs of Chen.......
By "double weighted" you mean he has his weight even between both feet? So? Read Dr Yang, Jwing-Ming's translation and discussion of the tai chi classics, where he presents a convincing case (apart from simple practicality) that this term has been mistranslated and misunderstood. What I like about Master Wong's presentation is the care he takes to explain and demonstrate clearly -- most tai chi videos are simply "look at me and see how good I am."
Geoffrey Miller Actually that is true. I am trying to find good instructional videos on the Old Frame but unless you speak Chinese it is really hard. I am finding that 'Monkey See Monkey Do' is a hard road! Dr Yang Jwing Ming's Yang DVD is really good but I just like the smooth martial like qualities to Chen that I am drawn too. Nothing against Dr Yang Jwing Ming's Taichi though...just still searching!
+Denny Earnest in tai chi you are supposed to double weighted in the beginning positions, and in horse stance. there is nothing wrong with that. tai chi is about motion so actually you are often momentarily double-weighted as you move through the forms. it's not usually a good idea to make strict unrealistic rules for your practice that are impossible to follow. double weighted doesn't mean "wrong." this is a term that is misunderstood for various reasons.
MASTER WONG CAN YOU EXPLAINED EACH MOVE PLEASE?
I want to understand the basic to this style
@genkers Health is first in every legitimate style of Tai Chi. In fact the goal is superior health, fitness and strength gained through the application of internal then external (Yin/Yang) exercices (hard, soft, spiritual) that provide the internally intrinsic strength necessary to become a peerless boxer. Master Wong is truely bringing the advanced aspects of Tai Chi Ch'uan which is in reality a pugilistic art form. It is called the Supreme Ultimate fist for a reason.
What are your guys preferences? Learn the yang style or the chen style first? And why is that?
if you're new to tai chi, the beijing 24 based on yang style is easier to learn. you can start with the 8 forms, then 16, then 24. if you're so inclined, you can move on to 32 and so forth. you can also try the singapore easyfit tai chi 13 and 18 forms. chen style is harder to learn, and you will greatly benefit from a teacher.
@gohan2oo6 yang style is more focus on the health aspect of tai chi where as chen style is more liek the martial arts aspect of it
Master, what is the difference between fist and fist2, please? I'm complete beginner - which style should I learn first: the yang style or the chen style? Thank you.
+Vladimira Drobna Yang style is Chen style adapted for those more focused on fitness though it is definitely usable for self-defense. Chen style is has a more combative essence than Yang style and the movements incorporate things such as deep stances, explosive movements, leaping/jumping, and changes in tempo. Yang style is softer and emphasizes finding hardness in softness. It is probably better suited for those not interested in the combative aspects of martial arts. Chen style however is the oldest form of Taiji.
Pardon, I noticed ur version of Chen style is kinda 'stiff' and wide. I'm unsure if it's because of different versions.
it seems he's making up his own style of the Chen style...
would be good, once basic moves have been learnt, to have back view then?... please Master Wong?
could you please exlain the applications of some of the moves? -- or maybe I have not heard them as I'm not speaking english very well...
Tji chetau btw, thank you for this wonderful video
awesome...

That is for shure no Chen Style
Need help! How it's called? How many form?
Anyone know the song at 6:10 please ?
thanks
Hold the SPACE button down.
He keeps doing it the Wong way ;)
master, what's the difference between tai chi yang style and chen style?
One was developed by the Chen family, one by the Yang family, although originally based on Chen style. Chen style is more overtly martial, with verying speed of movement, Yang style puts a greater emphasis on deep stances and slow, smooth movement -- probably because Yang Cheng-Fu, who formalised what we now know as Yang style, was a relatively large and heavy man and emphasised in his form the things he needed to work on.
I mean no criticism but it is funny the way he says "poodishan" :)
Can I ask what the name of this form is?
Somebody know the name this taolu (form)? Thanks
Thanks Tommy Lim!
very tough
is the chen style better than the yang style?
as varun No one for health one for self defence the same but different
That is so hard
this is not chen style. maybe look a like only. Where are all the spiral movements?? Where are all the clockwise rotations and anti-clockwise rotations. Silk coccon force!!?? This is just his kind of marital arts. lot of hand movements & stands are all too wide.
Not authentic Chen Style, not to say its bad but go to Chen Village 陈家溝 to learn from Chen Disciples :)
thats kung fu for ya its very hard to understand tai chi if chen style seems hard then you will be shocked on how hard yang style tai chi is
RUclips MAKE ME A FUCKING SLOW MOTION BUTTON PLEASE THANK YOU
err... are you making up your own Chen style? because really, it's all wong.
lol chen xioawang wouldn´t be able to sleep anymore if he´d see that named like that hahaha
i should do this because of what?
i got lost at "half way"
ye ye what ever?
Lol get an internet connection like mine then its all slow motion
can a fat man do this?
