I enjoyed making this video, and I hope some of you found it useful and/or educational. But please bear in mind that this is only a suggestion as to how to get the best possible experience of the ‘Changing of the Guard’ ceremony. I.e. avoiding the queues and actually taking in what’s going on.
If you don’t want to do it this way, and want to be with the crowd at the Palace instead, that’s fine.
But please, don’t chastise me for trying to show you a better way!
SIDE NOTE: I’m not implying that the Queen’s Guard will shoot you dead if you misbehave, I’m merely suggesting that they’re allowed to open fire on civilians in the right circumstances. What usually happens if a tourist is being a significant nuisance is that they press a button and the Metropolitan Police will come and deal with you instead.
As a British Military Veteran, I thank you for making the civilians aware of the duties of the Guards Devisions, of the British Army.
A well presented video……. Thank you!
@@donallen1384 I couldn't agree more! I wish more people would come across this video and read the comments! Can't stand when some half wit makes a fool of him/her-self for a photo next to an honorable Royal Guard 💂💖
Hi, proud American here with a word to my fellow Americans and to anyone who is not a citizen of the UK who hopes to one day go to England on vacation one day. These soldiers who wear the red tunics and have the large bearskin hats are not mall security guards. They are not hired actors. They are *real soldiers* who are carrying *real firearms* loaded with real ammo and tipped with real, and really sharp, bayonets. Their job is to protect the Royal Family and other important people and places. They have underwent a lot of training in order to be able to wear those uniforms and are rightly proud. Let them be proud. Let them enjoy the feeling that they get when they put their uniforms on. Don’t mock them, don’t try to make them laugh or smile, don’t get in their way, and don’t try to make their service a misery to them. And yes, if you are stupid enough to stand in their way they will absolutely, and rightly, knock you out of the way and they probably won’t be nice about it. And should you be stupid enough to try to hurt the Royal Family these soldiers can and will shoot your stupid self, so don’t go trying or you’ll find out what awaits you in the afterlife really quickly.
Yes, I couldn't agree more. Thank you for your input.
That is pretty well said, sir! Just adding to it that all the guards are former military personnel. Many of them participated in the field battles. They are selected on the basis of their achievements and it is a real honour to serve the RF in this country.
My best wishes,
A Tour Guide 👍💖
Dayum yo, they really get their steps per day crazy how much they walk just to protect one person. Love the Guards!
They certainly do! And yes, they are awesome!
Makes me proud to be British! And I’ve never felt more proud as I have these last 10 days RIP HRH Queen Elizabeth ll you served us well
Yes, I totally agree. RIP QE2 - the greatest monarch ever!
@@UltimateBucketList yes she is ❤️ and she is missed. Next time I go to the changing of the guard I’m going to try you’re tips for a better experience thanks 🙏🏼
@@nicolakate8496 you're welcome! Yes, try these tips and I guarantee that you'll be able to see more stuff. I just came back from London, showing my friend from Miami around. We couldn't do this because they barricaded all the walkways and implemented a one way system around the parks. So if you get here and you experience something similar, just go north and watch the Changing of the Horse Guards instead. Much quieter!
Yes we came down on Friday ended up walking 13 and a half miles lol! To say how busy it was it felt really laid back and chilled. It was nice having them roads closed down, no pollution lol! We’re going to wait until things calm back down again! And bring my nephew to experience it all! And I’ll mention changing of the horse Guards to my mum! Have you got a video on that?
@@nicolakate8496 yeah, I think it'd be a good idea to wait until things have calmed down! I don't have another video on the Horse Guards, the footage I have is in this video. But what I will say is that you can get "up close and personal" to the Horse Guards and you get a much more intimate experience than the Changing of the Foot Guards. You can literally stand next to them and take pictures etc. I think your mum and nephew would probably enjoy that!
Excellent video! Thank you for the detailed information and for including maps to make all of it so clear. Well done and much appreciated.👍 BTW, thank you for for calling out the airheads who think this is just a frivolous entertainment. These guards deserve respect.
Thank you so much Deborah, I'm glad someone appreciates the work that went into this video! 👍
And I totally agree: the "tourists" that try and do stupid things with the guards should hang their heads in shame.
Every time I go to London, I see more of this stuff happening and it's disrespectful for sure.
Awesome presentation. Thank you for the time you put into this.
Thank you sir! I appreciate your kind comments. 🙂
Thanks for this detailed video! This is exactly what Rick Steves recommend in his London guide book. I'm glad you find this practical!
Thanks! I've never seen Rick Steve's guide - but it's a practical way to see the CoG ceremony without standing in a sweaty crowd.
Thanks for such a comprehensive guide on the Changing of the Guard Ceremony
Thanks Jason. Believe it or not, most of the people who watch this don't actually know what's going on?
If you're in London regularly, you'll see crowds of people stand there and watch nothing because there's too many people in the way.
This way, you'll have a much better time and actually see stuff!
We will be in London towards the end of March and were trying to figure out the best way to see the changing of the guards. You have given us an excellent option. Thank you. I enjoyed your video. I appreciate you mentioning what not to do around the guards. It's a good reminder that these are real people, doing real jobs, who have real functioning weapons and aren't there for our enjoyment but for protecting their country.
Thanks! I'm glad you found this video helpful!
And you'd be surprised at the amount of people who think that these guards are just paid actors in costume doing some exhibition stuff.

This is perfectly timed for me. I'm in central London so I want to see this while I'm here and I this makes sense to be able to do it right. It does seem like a lot to keep track of.
You're welcome. It's pretty simple once you understand how the ceremony works.
Even if you only make two stops, you'll see more than if you were to cram yourself at the Palace gates.
@@UltimateBucketList I noticed that as I visited the palace even after the changing on the guards everyone was queued up by the main gates. So I'm sure during the changing of the guards it would be even worse.
@@amiyrbarclift1640 yes that's exactly right. It's busy even without the ceremony going on, so it's much worse when it's happening.

The changing of the guard at Windsor is much more spectator friendly event. You can follow the new Guard all the way from Wellington barracks up to the Castle. If you have a visitor pass you can then go into the castle and watch the whole change over from
just feet away. No railings, no huge crowds. The old guard then marches back to barracks through the town. Grew up in Windsor, great memories.
That's correct yes. It's a lot more viewer friendly at Windsor than it is at Buckingham Palace.
Thank you for this great guide! I'll be seeing the guards change on a sunday, so glad I can see both the cavalry as the regular guard change! :D
Amazing, I hope you had a fantastic time watching the CoG ceremony and you found this guide helpful.

Thank you, that makes me British. I have enjoyed watching them several times and I loved it. I like them doing what they do “Decently and in Order” as per the Bible. They are really committed in all what they do. I thank them all for entertaining the public unaware. Sometimes they play Christian music which I really enjoy as a Christian. They wants played “Just a closer walk with thee” and Amazing Grace” I did sing in Spirit that day. It was helpful for the soul. Thank you all Changing of the guards men and women. We appreciate you. God bless you all.
Yes that's true. They play a wide variety of music and given that they represent the Monarch who is the Head of the Church of England - they play a variety of hymns too!
@@UltimateBucketList Thank you very much.
Great tips. Wish me luck as I will be there this summer.
Enjoy! I'm sure you'll have an amazing time.
Well done! I especially appreciate how you continually pointed out that the guards shouldn't be touched or harassed. They DO NOT CARE who you are they will yell at you and, in some cases, point the rifle at you. I don't understand how people think they can act foolishly next to a guard for Tik Tok videos or actually touch these soldiers. There is absolutely nothing more satisfying than watching a guard march away and ruin somebody's stupid video or shout at some entitled tourist. Rule of thumb...when they stamp their feet, look out! The next action they take won't be subtle. Great video!👍
Yes, thank you very much! I appreciate you saying so.
It's a disturbing trend that people are intentionally baiting them to react just for social media views.
Sign of the times unfortunately!
That's awesome!! Thank you so much for this!
You're very welcome! Glad you like this video :)
Nice i love the changing of the guard
Absolutely! One of the few royal traditions that most people in the country is still proud of!

Thank you so much for this very informative video. I like the band playing the modern songs. Could you tell me, where and when I should stay.
Thanks Johannes, much appreciated. Yes, the band play modern songs to entertain the crowds.
If you're looking for a place to stay, anywhere around Westminster or the West End is good.
Be sure to check out my complete London guide here: ruclips.net/video/mWDUhE6NDxk/видео.html
@@UltimateBucketList Thank you for answering. I think my question was wrong. If I want to listen to the modern music the band plays - where and when should I stand during the Changing of the guard. Do they only play modern music at Buckingham Palace or in all places? And what time approximately?
They usually play modern music at the Palace, which starts at 12:00pm and last for about 50 minutes.
But as mentioned in the video, if you want to be at the Palace gates, you'll need to be there two hours before!
we did this and it is very cool and different, but as a tourist I would suggest a couple things. First starting at St. James is cool idea, but we watched them completely leave St. James and got great close up photos. The crowds were too thick for us to keep up the guards on the march down the street from St. James, but it's okay just let them go. Also, on our day the guards did not have on the traditional red and big bear hats so I wasn't sure what was going on at first. They had on formal military uniforms. we skipped step 2 and just went to the Mall and crossed it and then made our way down towards the palace, along St James park and crossed Spur Rd. at the crosswalk and actually got very close to circle barricade, as the band marching was coming into the circle (which is great because, honestly the tourists want to see all the pomp and circumstance), then we went to wellington barracks and saw some of that. The we headed back just a 50-100 meters to the corner of Spur Rd and Birdcage rd. Just FYI the police did on our day rope off some spots for parts of the sidewalk initially, so you cant always get to the spots in this video. We just relaxed in the shady lawn area just to the left of the palace and waited 30 minutes for the guards to come from buckingham to Wellington barracks and this was great just like this video said!!! The police finally un-roped the area on birdcage rd right where spur rd meets it and I got on the sidewalk and had the guard coming right at me towards wellington barracks and it was an amazing!!!! We skipped Clarence house, too much running around. If you do just what this video says you do see amazing stuff but it would feel like you miss all the fanfare and excitement of the crowd. This way I did it I got to see both the fanfare and some of the cool guard stuff. I think I would like to just take in the parade and pomp on one day and then on another day follow this video more closely. Also, at St. James there might be a tour group and you could just follow them, they'll get you the gist of this video too.
For sure. There's many different ways to see the CoG ceremony and no one way is superior for a specific individual than another.
Personally (and most of the time), I just watch the guards from St James's, then Wellington Barracks, then go north to Horse Guards Parade and catch the second half of their ceremony, skipping Clarence House - then I can escape the crowds via White Hall.
I think the worst thing you could do is stand with the crowd and see absolutely nothing, that we can agree on.
I had no idea it would be such a circus near the gates 😳 So glad I came across this video before our trip next week-I really underestimated these daily crowds!
Yeah, those crowds are massive, especially during the summer months.
Your best bet is to follow the route as shown, but also after visiting Clarence house to watch a guard change, walk all the way to Horse Guards Parade to see the last half of the ceremony there.
Glad this video helps!
I'm sorry but, I ain't sharing this. This is GOLD.
All the more reason to share this video 😉
Definently following this time table next time in London. Also shoutout to your Karen voice :)
Thanks Rakesh! And well done for spotting the 'Karen' voice!
What’s the first song in the video it sounds so good
That's the famous 'March of the British Grenadiers' - very patriotic song!
@@UltimateBucketList thank you as an American I like it alot
Hello and thank you for this video!
I have to say that although wt u say makes sense, for someone who is visiting London for the first time this too much info! very hard to follow. so maybe instead, if one wants to stand in one place and maybe follow that guards at one point.. where would that place be?
Thanks. But this really isn't too much information to stand at three different locations at various times.
If you did want to watch the CoG ceremony and only stand in one place, you'll be queuing at the gates at 9:00am for an 11:00am start, as mentioned in the video. Good luck with that.
Everywhere else will be crowded to holy hell to the point where you won't be able to move, and I'm not joking.
If you don't want to spend your holiday waiting, watch the guards coming out at Wellington Barracks, then go north to Horseguards Parade to watch the Changing of the Horse Guards instead.
Hello, can one leave the area before the completion of changing of guards, or is it barricaded for pedestrians as well? Basically, I would like to leave by public transport and attend the Lords Cricket Ground tour at 12:30 PM. Is that doable?
You're free to leave, but you might have a hard time getting out of the crowds and onto the tube. Lord's Cricket Ground is famously in St John's Wood, which is on the Jubilee line, so you'll need to get the tube at Green Park and ride it to St John's Wood for your tour. It's a little tight on time, as the tube might take a while and it'll take you a while to walk to Lord's from the tube station. See my video on Lord's ruclips.net/video/dO0FAR4yngU/видео.html
@@UltimateBucketList thanks that helps.

I would like to know does St. James Palace open to Pubilc?
Sadly, it's not open to the public - as it's a working Royal Palace that's small compared to Buckingham.
@@UltimateBucketList I live in Scotland, if you come to Scotland again, I suggest you could visit some Scots Former Royal Residences: Holyrood Palace, Edinburgh Castle, Stirling Castle, Falkland Palace and Linlithgow Palace(it is a ruin and close this year due to the repairs)
@@luciferhk2624 Believe it or not, I've been to most of those places. In fact, I covered the first two in my Edinburgh video. I'll probably come back to Scotland at some point.
Is this happening everyday? If not when to see this?
As mentioned at the end of the video, it happens usually on Sundays, Mondays, Wednesday and Friday. Check the website for exact times and details. Thanks.
Just a quick note. When answering the question about why they wear the 'funny hats and costumes' you made some mistakes. The Red tunics of the foot guards was so, back when they fought inn wars in the 17th and 18th centuries, the enemy spotter (a person who counts how many men you have) would have a hard time counting the men because red from a distance is the hardest colour to see (it all blends into one). Secondly, the bearskins first purpose is not to make the men seem taller in battle. Back when they used to fight against cavalry forces the cavalrymen would swing their swords down to try and slash the guards faces. The bearskin cap came below that point to just above the eyes so when the cavalry did try to slash the face they would hit the bearskin and the guard could get them with their bayonet. Overall though a very great and informed video
There's many different varying theories about the red tunics. There's also the notion that red was simply the cheapest colour dye, hence why it was used so much. But other than that, thanks for your input.
I’m assuming with the passing of The Queen it will now be called The King’s guard? Does the ceremony stay the same or does King Charles amend to his preference?? Thanks
Correct, yes!
Generally King Charles can change it if he wants to. But it's tradition to stick to what your predecessor has done, hence why the ceremony has been largely unchanged for hundreds of years.
in other words, with this itinerary you won’t see the actual changing of the guards but the soldiers marching up and down
As silly as it sounds, yeah. But unless you're pressed up right at the gates themselves, you won't see the Changing of the Guards anyway. With this itinerary, you'll see everything else, but completely unobstructed.
@@UltimateBucketList i see, thanks for the great info! what time do the old foot guards cross path with the new horse guards and viceversa? i think that would be the best option to see them at the same time
@@salemk.3098 depending on the timings, you can generally see the guards crossing each other when the old guard leaves St James' Palace walking towards Buckingham. They will generally cross on the mall just after the Victoria Memorial and you'll see them salute each other.
Alternatively, if you don't want to go back to the same places twice, after seeing the new guard leave Wellington Barracks, walk towards Horse Guards Parade and you'll still be able to catch the Changing of the Horse Guards.
👍😊
Thank you.

I only watched a bit of this video, but yes - it's people like these that are disgraceful.
I mean, imagine trying to cost someone their jobs and their salaries (they get docked up to 2 weeks wages for a simple offense) just so that you can get social media likes and views.
Terrible if you ask me.
15:53
Exactly!
I never knew they were actual soldiers, I always thought they were paid actors. This is good to know.
Yes, they are real serving members of our military.
Do you think this will also work having someone in a wheelchair?
Yes, this will work. Most of the walkways are flat and the bit at St James's park is a slope, there are no steps. Hope that helps?
Idea: London zoo and New York City
New York City, yes.
London Zoo is a pretty average zoo.
Is this not the London zoo?
Poor guys probably don't get taken seriously enough with their bearskins
That's certainly true. People think that these guys are a joke. If only they knew what they (theoretically) can do to them.
Loved the video but the comment "entitled American" was offensive...any one can be an entitled anything so don't just assume it was an American...need to fix that blunder. Entitled tourist would have been better.
Thanks for the comments, I appreciate you watching.
Personally, I don't believe that term was 'offensive' at all, as the whole point of the description is to show that the Queen's (now King's) Guard don't care who you are - they will enforce the rules strictly and without mercy.
Out of the thousands of views this video has accrued - you're actually the only person to be offended by this particular comment.
With no disrespect intended; I would suggest that you to reconsider your own sensitivities.
The world is becoming increasingly soft with people taking offence to just about everything.
Please don't be one of them.
As an American, I get pretty annoyed with entitled Americans as well.
That's funny! Obviously that was just a tongue-in-cheek example that I used in the video, but yeah - these guys don't care what your circumstances are - they will retaliate if you get in their way, mock them or prevent them from doing their jobs.
This could have been a great and insightful video, but you just had to go the "America bad" route. Just... why? I am not even American but it's getting old. The Karen voice was funny for the first time, then it went more into "manchild" territory. Shame, I would have loved to share this video with my relatives who are visiting London.
Let me be perfectly clear: this video did not 'target Americans' and I am no Ameriphobe.
But imagine being so offended for something that wasn't meant to be offensive that you fail to see the value in the video itself. The entire world has literally gone mad.
If you're refusing to share this video because you didn't like something that no-one else was offended over, then that's infinitely worse than anything in this video.
Because you have then categorically proven that people really are offended by everything, and entitled over nothing.
Think about that for a second.
@@UltimateBucketList Seems like a lot of assumptions are going on here:
1. "Imagine being so offended for something" - I explained that I disliked your demeanor at a certain point and found it rather annoying. You're the one that seems to be losing his mind over that comment. Yes, someone criticized you so "the entire world has literally gone mad". Calm down.
2. "You're refusing to share this video because you didn't like something that no-one else was offended over" - I am not going to share something that gives me second-hand embarrassment. Also, how can you claim nobody else was "offended" (I don't know your interpretation of that word)? You have over 2k views and 16 comments at the time, surely you must understand that not everyone who watches this video leaves a comment.
3. "You have then categorically proven that people really are offended by everything, and entitled over nothing" - What am I entitled to? An informative video without childish and borderline xenophobic humour? That'd be nice, but I don't recall making any demands. I simply expressed my opinion over the part of your video that ruined it for me.
@@30mmf2 It's funny that you mention 'assumptions' because you've incorrectly assumed the following.
1) I don't "lose my mind" over random people who I'll never meet, nor who's opinion that I won't actually care about. Might want to take your own advice and "calm down".
2) You're the only one to air said grievance. 1 out of 2,000 is a very small percentage, wouldn't you agree?
3) Therein lies your problem. You forget that you're watching this on RUclips - where creators are free to put in whatever they want. We don't have to be politically correct, we are not the BBC. And if you're expecting us to be ... doesn't that make you entitled?
In short - you're entitled to your opinion and you're free to air that as you wish. If you think that my humour is 'childish' and 'xenophobic' and that it 'ruined' the video for you, then you're free to think that and say as much.
However I'm also entitled to my opinion, and I think YOU are overreacting to something that was perfectly innocuous (didn't swear, didn't use racism or offensive humour or anything like that) and I advise you (in my opinion, of course) that you should really take a step back and objectively look at what you are offended over. I think once you analyse it, you'll realise that I wasn't trying to offend anybody (which would actually hurt my metrics) - which was the point in my previous message.
Up to you whether you take that on board or not.
@@UltimateBucketList
1) You've quite literally claimed "the entire world has gone mad" over a random person saying they disliked a part of your video. So yes, calm down.
2) I thought my point was very clear, not everyone who has something to say will, in fact, say it. And to be perfectly honest, I wasn't going to either. I am sure there are many timelines in which we aren't wasting our time here.
3) That all reads like "my opinion is more valid than yours". You think I am more offended than I am, and I think you're projecting insecurities, so we've naturally reached the impasse. Go ahead and have the last word if you must, I am sure it will make you feel better.
@@30mmf2 1) I'm perfectly calm - the fact that you repeatedly bring up yet another innocuous comment proves that you're someone who's easily offended. Ironically your comments indicate that this is true.
2) On the same token, not everyone with anything positive to say will say it either. It works both ways. But yes, in another timeline, neither of us would be wasting our time with each other - we both agree on that.
3) Once again, you've made something out of nothing. I'm saying you're entitled to your opinion. And I'm also saying I disagree with that opinion. That's it. I can't make any simpler than that. It's nothing to do with 'insecurities', but I'm sure you'll find a way to take umbrage at that too.
