If you've missed the last few episodes, we decided to buy a cabin after building a home using intermodal containers turned out to be a LOT more of a challenge that we realized! It has been a LONG 4 years of self building our home and it's time we start living again. Now that it's been a few weeks, this cozy cottage is exactly what our souls needed!

How did we end up here?
It all began with a year of full-time travel, embracing the van life until the world shifted, and we had to adjust accordingly. With travel no longer an option but determined to stay productive, we transformed our compact mobile abode into a self-sufficient off-grid dwelling that fulfilled all our needs. Recognizing the uncertainty of the current tiny home, we quickly realized a permanent residence was the most sensible choice. Over the past three years, we have meticulously overseen every aspect of the project ourselves, planning the construction while simultaneously setting up the off-grid property to sustain our future food requirements. For the last two years we've lived in a Geodesic Dome, which has allowed us to be comfortable (expect for the winter months), while we realize our shipping container home dream. However, this will mark our 4th winter with stable electricity, running water, or a flushing toilet and time has come to come up with a new plan going forward.

This time last year if we were dealing with all of this and still living at The Land, it would’ve been devastating. I just know we’d be taking weeks off from posting and would be in such a bad headspace! I’m sure this goes without saying, but while this situation is still very stressful and definitely sucks…it made me so happy while editing this video how present we were with one another at the Cabin. If you watch our videos often, you probably noticed I've cut back on including the cutesy kissy moments that happen when we forget the camera's are rolling. We experienced some homophobia last year, which made us retreat a bit but watching all this footage back one thing was so clear...love is love and we'll get through it together. Please don't take this as a negative, but I hope you are taking legal action on the contractors that made all the mistakes. You both deserve so much more. I watched you feeding those jokers and pitching in keeping everything cleaned up for them everyday after they left. You deserved so much more. I agree! Hold the contractors accountable! They at least should refund what you have already paid them, and also pay for the work to redo what they messed up! I know Canadian Law has limitations when it comes to seeking legal redress in construction issues, but truly those who made the errors need to pay for their mistakes. At the very least, make it clear who they are so that others won't get blind-sided the way you both have been. I sense you are both "nice" in that unique Canadian way that most of us are, but there does come a time when enough is enough!
OH and thank goodness you have all "your feeding them" and "doing their clean up" on video to take to court. I hope it all gets settled in your favor. Then you can relax. ❤to you both.
Completely agree, they deserve so much better! I'm always shocked at how so many people are able to lose all their money, lose their homes, or have their lives drastically harmed by contractors failing the basic aspects of their jobs. Situations like this are genuinely devastating and happen to tons of people, everyday. We need to clamp down the legal loopholes and protects that allow them to get away with this.
We don’t take this as a negative at ALL, Roxanne ❤. Neither of us are litigious people, I really wish we were. We’re both sensitive and emotional people (not in a bad way, I think it’s a strength). Without saying too much; it takes a LOT for us to go through all that because of the fact that we know it will affect us so much. There have been at least 3 times throughout this build where the right thing would’ve been to sue people who’s mistakes have cost us tens of thousands of dollars…but what is our peace worth? Hope that makes sense ❤
Personally, I find the unstaged kissy moments, the silly dancing, and the sly innuendos to be utterly charming, sweetly romantic, and emotionally satisfying beyond description. They remind me of the early days of my own marriage and the bonding we did while we worked together to build a home and a life together. You are setting such a fine example for anyone, regardless of their orientation, to follow. Don't dim your light for those who cannot see beyond their own fear and loathing of anything that is contrary to their programming. But I'm gay and happily married, so it all looks pretty normal to me. Love you guys!

Cripes, I’m in my 70’s and I still can’t fathom why some people are so miserable towards others different from them. It makes no sense and never did. Personally, I like the cottage better than the container house. I know you guys are so far into it, time wise, financially, etc. But everytime you're at the lake house, you both radiate such contentment and peace. Love you boys! See you Wednesday!
I like the lakefront house, but I also think the finished container house will be just as beautiful. I think T&T radiate joy where ever they are because they are together. Home for them is being together-whether they realize that or not! (But I think they do.😊)

The stick-built cabin is much than that container home. The container homes never work right. They are scams. They almost always cost more to build than the containers themselves. The metal boxes are meant as a system. The corners provide the supports, not the relatively thin corrugated sheet metal between the corner supports. Every cut you make for windows, roof openings, floors and plumbing compromises the strength of the container. I wonder how long your cantilevered second floor will last without sagging into the lower containers. You already found one problem with the stair well. Moreover shipping containers are not environmentally friendly. The steel that is used to build the container creates a greater carbon footprint than wood from stick-built houses. Wood is recyclable, trees can regrown. Steel is not.
That makes me so very sad to hear, bc I so enjoy those "cutesy kissy moments". It is a reminder that you are moving forward together despite the stress, frustration, delays, etc and it goes to staying grounded in each other. Please take these moments to kiss one another, or the animals, have a wine, make a joke, dance and be silly. Those who love you, love you 💜💜🐾🐾🐾

It's exactly the same in the US. They require you to pay for all these permits and to meet certain standards, which is a good thing, but then the same authority does next to nothing to hold contractors to that standard. This is why I'm considering trying to fully build my own house. I don't really want to, but I don't trust anyone else to do it right at a fair price.
I too am shocked by the poor quality in workmanship that you have experienced, but that I unfortunately have also experienced in the US

Even with the immense stress and devastating situations that have come out of horrible contractors: you both have handled yourselves so well, taken care of each other, and continued to strive to make the best of it by working with what you can at the time. I forgot to comment last week, but thanks so very much for demonstrating the tile paint. I live in a mid-'80s built Florida house. When I bought it 10 years ago, it was rife with bad carpet and bad tile. Over time I have replaced some and covered a lot of the tile with laminate. Only one bathroom still exists with original tile. The tile is in great shape but the grout is beyond help. Thank God for your paint solution. For $50 I can make the floor look like new and save a fortune. Can't wait to find out about the contain house solutions.

I think the white paint really works with the woodwork, floors and furniture. You can always add colour with cushions and area rugs.

Seeing the insane amount of time, effort and money poured into the container home proves what so many others have said, that they aren't "greener," "more efficient," "less expensive" than traditional homes. That said, they look really cool and I hope this project works out perfectly for you guys. I'll be curious to see how it performs long-term. Glad you got the Lake House! That wood stove looks great! Well, the whole house looks great, but how could it not, with you two designing it!
As a real estate agent who has done a number of home inspections on prefabs, I recommend you also consider creating maybe a brick foundation of some sort to prevent moisture from getting under the house. Most of the prefabs I inspected that were older than a few years had mold forming in the subfloor because these structures are usually on a raised open foundation. Because of the mold, most became inhabitable. You both put in so much work. I’d want this home to be safe for you for years to come.
You both have this incredible talent for making any space feel like a home. From my perspective, any space you’ve created, from the first RV, to Connie, to the Dome and now the lake cabin, there is a sense of you belonging there, in that place, with each other and your family. Love the new fireplace and looking forward to seeing the solution is to the stair tower issue. ❤

In my experience, the first two years of renovations in a new home are exciting but if you don't get them done by then, you lose steam and enthusiasm pretty quickly. I can see your excitement in the new home and your exhaustion with the old one, and I really do get it. The hole in the middle of my brick kitchen floor that developed during Covid is still there with a stool on top of it for safety's sake!

I like white walls. That way, the art you put on it stands out. It crisply is clean, and it expands a space, making it brighter.
Nice to have a wood stove. Hauling, stacking, maybe even cutting and splitting the wood, then hauling it again is a pain in the ass, but the heat from a wood stove absolutely cannot be beat by anything. Enjoy your new addition!

This makes me so sad for y’all. Our homes are so much more important than just the bricks and wood they’re made of. They’re supposed to be safe spaces, in every sense of the phrase. There is a big difference between mistakes and negligence, and for someone else to risk your safety, the structure of your home, and all of that money makes me sick to my stomach. The good news is that it will all get resolved eventually, and you will have your dream space. Hope you’re able to see the light at the end of the tunnel, boys ❤

Great progress! I liked the green, but I understand dark winters indoors are difficult. White was a good choice. The wood stove is so cute. I prefer wood as a main heat source with electric as a backup. That’s what my grandparents had until maybe 2020/2021. I always loved to nap in front of the fire. Glass front is the best. So calming

Just a quick question that you guys have probably already consdiered: Will you have sufficient fireproofing for the walls behind that new, beautiful stove? I had to place cement in wire and topped with 3-inch thick fieldstone behind my stove. Also, I agree with the white paint. It's universal and airy-looking! Beautiful! My walls are a very light ivory against the bare wooden framework, psots and beams --- makes everything look clean and open. Keep up the good work, and all the best on dealing with the issues at the container house.

Great job boys, I highly recommend a sealer on the concrete. They make some that will make the concrete shiny and they make some that will keep it matte. Please do it to avoid stain/scratches!

I admire your ability to remain positive when there is so much to do by way of construction and correcting past "mistakes." Just want to thank you for cuing us in the existence of Incogni. I run multiple websites and dark web piracy/stealing of personal and business data is a HUGE problem, even though I have software in place which thwarts hundreds and even thousands of spam attempts. (and keep in mind that I am a small operation).

White paint really makes such a difference. I noticed there seems to be no drop cloth or protection on the floor. Rollers always have a light bit of paint that hits below. Even when rolling slowly, paint "spray" still spins off. I'm always impressed and inspired by your team work and getting so much accomplished! Keep going!! Thanks for sharing guys! 💞💞

You have probably mentioned this in a past video but I'm not remembering, what colour/brand of white are you painting everything? Your home is just becoming more and more cozy. Hey guys must agree the white paint is definitely giving a lightness to the house it's coming together. Sorry you are still having so many issues with the container home you should be sueing the contractors for shoddy work and causing you so much emotional, and physical hardship. LOVED this - felt like 'good old times' for some reason. I never miss an episode. Like ever. I think I'm more likely to skip a meal than ever skip an episode. I know I say this every time, but I absolutely LOVE your new house. The changes you are making are incredible. It truly is a dream home. While I can't stand the cold, I literally moved from the state of Virginia to South Carolina because of the cold winters. So while Canada has never been on my list of places I would ever want to live, I would make an exception if I could retire to that house!!! I could hibernate in the house until summer came and go back in again when it got cold. I love it that much! The views are amazing and I love that Scandanvia vibe!
