I went to a Honda dealership to see the new Civic Type R and they had a $20k market adjustment on top of the MSRP. They wanted $68,000 for it. Crazy.

Your right about the dealers playing games. I was a prospective buyer in the market for Type R, Type S, GR Corolla, RS3, and Golf R but the mark up game killed it for me. I’ll stick with my Corolla hatchback XSE manual until they wake up and learn a few things from Subaru dealers.

This is a fact. I actually ended up getting a 2024 BRZ Limited for about $3,000-$4,000 less than what the Toyota dealership was asking for an 86. I really wanted the Toyota version, but the BRZ wins due to pricing. Subaru dealers are killing the market rn with affordable options.

Picked up that BRZ I ordered last week. Very happy with it... And having fun adding some mods.
Your points about the WRX hold true for me. So much aftermarket for feel, handling, power, and looks. For the price of a marked up GR or Type R, you can easily build on the WRX to be a looker and handle very well, with enough money left over to not care if you mess with the engine/ECU and void your warranty. Or just wait to touch that stuff after a few years (what I'm doing).
Setting looks aside, a few quick mods completely change the way the car drives: stiff rear sway bar, Group-n pitch stop and transmission mount, a short throw, and some bushing inserts. My kid is already asking when I'll teach him to drive it.
One thing folks not familiar with WRX will want to install (and quickly), is a PCV side catch can. If you hammer on it a lot, then a CCV side is also not a bad idea. Oh and always let those boxers warm up ;-).

I too was tired of dealer games, couldn’t get a Toyota or Honda. Opted to buy an older WRX. My first choice was always going to be the new WRX, but Subaru let all the traditional new WRX buyers down. We all went in search of the Toyota and Hondas instead. I’ll never forget the live release video of the wrx and it was shot on a dusty road so you couldn’t see the rear.

Absolutely right on the point, was plan to get type r, after seen the mark up of almost every four cylinder turbo with manual, figure out the Subaru wrx is one of the best car you can get without markup and even below msrp. No BS no game with Subaru dealer, got my first brand new 23 wrx, below msrp, special interest rate 3.9 from subaru, the best part is that lifetime Powertrain warranty adding to my wrx without additional cost. 5k mile on my car now, I feel the more I drive the car, the more I enjoy it, it’s not the fastest 4 cylinder car, but you get the best performance for the money you spend. I’m not the fan of modifying car, so that lifetime warranty is perfect for me. As automotive technician, I’m going to see how many miles I can get with this new fa24 engine from factory without modifying.

I negotiated 8% off MSRP on a WRX premium package 11 which is the one with no moonroof. The interest rate is what killed the deal and the fact that this car needs winter tires. Seems like inventory for this car is going to grow in the near future so Im holding late winter to jump back again.
I looked at a Civic Si… forget it no way Im paying more for an Si. Looks like a great car but I’ve had too many Hondas S2000, RSX-S, Civic Si 2018 and I currently own a 87 CRX Si.

Dealers are being incredibly greedy with the mark ups, the add ons etc. The market is coming around and the customers who were interested in these performance vehicles that were turned off by the dealers being egregious with said mark ups and add ons aren't going to want to do business with these dealerships. Gone are the times of taking care of loyal customers and everything is about $$$$ and greed. Greed and late stage capitalism have completely ruined everything from cars, to hobbies and more. Toyota and Honda intentionally holding back inventory, Dodge has completely overpriced all their vehicles, Ford same thing with mark ups, Chevy I mean I could go on. Subaru and Mazda are what Toyota and Honda used to be years ago. Readily available and purchasable and also you can even factory order and their salesman dont play any games.

As much as I prefer the GR86, if I was in the market for one of the twins I'd be sorely tempted to just order a BRZ. I know I can factory order it and get it just how I want it as far as trim, options, and colors, and there seems to be a lot less Subaru dealerships that charge markup. They're out there for sure, but I tend to hear less stories. I guess because their enthusiast cars are seen as less desirable.
Luckily, I think I'm in a good position if I decide to order an MX-5 next year. The Club trim (which is what I'd be going for) are only built to order at this point, and I've purchased from two different Mazda dealerships and had a good experience with both. Plus, I have a third dealership constantly sending me emails and wanting to get my business, so I think I have a pretty good chance of scoring a good deal if I decide to go this route. It also helps that the 2024 MX-5 isn't a new model, and just has some evolutionary improvements over the previous year rather than revolutionary.

Its really sad how everything is, as you said “really hard to get and really expensive” because its just more of a clout game at this point. the game of who can flex the most money and if you tell them no they get butthurt and say “well i got some other shmuck who i can con.” whats also crazy is that a lot of the times they dont know everything about the car, and they just look at the badge and think “oH mAn LeTs mArK iT Up eVeN HiGhEr.” its the main reason why i dont even want to buy a new car. i have a eagle talon tsi awd and it keeps up with a good majority of new cars and yea i know that its a 30 year old car, but with how little mileage it has, id rather just spend the money and have more fun in that, and i mean ik its kinda weird to hear from an 18 yo but its my preference ig😅. Also semi-related, but i do appreciate all the videos on the new wrx and giving the honest truth, ive been helping my friend as he has an opportunity to buy one and you have been one of the few people who has really put the effort for someone who is new and i immediately recommended him to your channel so i really appreciate you for that!

You can do what you want, obviously, but the driving POV would be a lot better without your hands on top of the steering wheel. I hadn’t really thought about it, but I heard the theory that driving with your hands, arms over the steering wheel airbag is a good way to get a hand and/or arm smashed into your face if the airbag deploys.
