Monica is the most unique tennis player in history. Total genius. The most difficult achievements in terms of extra precision passing shots, imposible angles, consistent shots on the line. So beautiful and stunning to see her way of playing, She evocates in me geometric fantasies, it is an emotional tennis. Many fantastic players in the tennis world, but nobody as her. She is the by far the number one in my list (women or men)
I think she is the best ever as well. She simply got derailed by the knife, and subsequently wasn’t able to officially prove it. Though to some of us who witnessed her first career, it is clearly obvious.
Fully deserving of equal pay! This was such an exciting match to watch; a pity that Gaby was unable to sustain the elegant attacking skills seen here, over the course of her career. Seles showing, as ever, the defensive skills of a brick wall. Thank for posting this one; it's a treat to see ;-)
It's rarely mentioned, but I think Monica had the best bounce smash of pretty much any player. It didn't look too elegant, but it was incredibly effective. Most players find the bounce smash really difficult - it's very easy to get wrong.
One other thing about Monica that she doesn't get enough praise for is her court positioning, anticipation, and how early she sees the ball. Many people praise Hingis for those specific attributes but I honestly thought that Monica (during her peak) was even stronger at those specific skills than Hingis was.
I still think Monica has the best two handed backhand in history. she was able to use that extra hand in a way nobody else has - she hit it like it was a forehand.
As a Sabatini fan, I must say this was truly Gaby at her best. Constant topspin backhands, solid net play and fluid movement but the true damage here came from her forehand AND HER SERVE! So sad that this play wasn't seen more often in her career. Seles in the end was mentally tougher. Seles hadn't even reached her full potential yet. Seles in late '92 and early '93 (with a stronger body) was stunning. This match makes me yearn for this period of the WTA. To me this was the golden age of the WTA Seles, Graf, Sabatini, Navratilova, Sanchez, Capriati...
Yeah, here Gaby delivers some very effective first serves, but also her usual floating second serves... which maybe were not so easy to punish for most players because of the heavy amount of side spin, but not for Monica, who was able to hit extremely early. It's easy to say that, with a serve at the same level of her groundstrokes and of her net game, Sabatini would've been a multiple slam winner. A reliable serve like Novotna or even Graf would've granted her a solid amount of easy points, which are so important into the "economy" of a close match at highest level, and would've allowed her to dictate play in most of her serving points. And Sabatini was very difficult to play for her opponents, when she was able to find the way to dictate most points. P.S. her heavy, fully extended arm forehand, which was good both as a defensive shot (great reach!) and as an attacking one, has never been a weakness in my opinion. Her true issues were second serve (almost always), and often also first serve (not in this match). The rest of her all court game was just amazing, including volleying skills not far from those of the very best s&v players of all time.
@@pierdomenicosommati443 I completely agree. May I add that along with her serve it was her backhand that becane a weakness when she started slicing almost exclusively post the 92 season. I know so much of the deterioration of her game stemmed from confidence and motivation issues. When I watch footage of her game, I enjoy 88-90 actually because I feel she hit flat through her shots most then instead of the defensive brushing up the back of the ball which came in subsequent years.
@@mcoudeniii yeah I remember a couple of Wimbledon editions, in which she was only slicing her backhands, all the time, even for passing shots. She was able of not being totally wiped by Novotna, only thank to her great volley skills. She started again hitting full backhands during her sudden comeback of Master 1994 and beginning of 95 season. I recently saw videos of her win vs Navratilova (it was Czech champion's last carrier match) and her 2 finals (Master and Sidney) won over Davenport, and she was hitting a lot of amazing backhand winners. Her first serve was not as good as in 1990, but apart from this, she was playing just great.
Seles hit hard from both sides. Steffi's forehand was hard, but her slice backhand was not. But the low, penetrating shot was great for a fast indoors surface.
Sabatini was such a powerful, mature player here, definitely at her best, while Seles was still just a perky kid. To defeat Sabatini in 5 sets was an incredible achievement.
Just a perky kid? Well, Seles finished the season ranked #2 (this was the year-end VS Chamionships). Not that difficult or surprising to see Seles win since Monica dominated early on in their rivalry and ended up with an 11-3 head-to-head record over Sabatini. The only surprise to me was that Seles didn't win this in straight sets or in 4 sets. And BTW, Sabatini only won 1 Grand Slam in her career, while Seles won 9 in an abbreviated career and would have tripled that had she not been stabbed.
She was a skinny teen here, it's a sort of a riddle where her huge power came from. Besides, Sabatini was dominating Graf in those months, and Seles struggled a bit in the second half of the year, almost lost against Sanchez in the quarters, so she wasn't a clear favourite here. And next month Sabatini defeated her in Buenos Aires in a show match.
nick fit Sabatini was an underachiever and a damn choker. Lucky Graf had an off day to win that 1990 US Open. And she choked away that '91 Wimbledon Final to Graf. Nice looking lady, but that's about it.
Graf had another off day in the SF of this tournament. I think Sabatini should have won this match because this highlight video suggests she was better here than Monica. In the end she couldn't keep her very high level though.
Starting with this tournament to the 1993 Australian Open, there were 12 big tournaments (9 Grand Slams and 3 Year End tournaments), Monica won 10 of them (7 Grand Slams and 3 Year Ends). This is very similar to Steffi Graf from 1987 Year End to 1990 Australian Open, where she won 10 of 12 (8 Grand Slams and 2 Year Ends).
@Illya Kuryakin Steffi lost WIM 87 and USO 87 finals to Navratilova in straight sets. After the USO 87, Graf won their next 4 meetings (WIMB 88 & 89, USO 89, VSC 89). They did not play each from VSC 89 to USO 91 (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graf%E2%80%93Navratilova_rivalry). Steffi was dominant and without any real competition from 88-89. Her 88-89 Sabatini, ASV and Shriver losses were aberrations. Monica's only real competition was Steffi from 91-93. They were pretty even (2-3) as the record reflects. A few ASV, Capriati and Sabatini blips (similar to Steffi's ASV, Sabatini & Shriver losses in 88-89) were aberrations to Seles's dominance. Steffi had some slumping, but was still the only consistent threat to Seles dominance. Then Monica got stabbed, leaving Steffi with "seven dwarves" (as Navratilova would say) to compete against from 93-96. (vault.si.com/vault/2008/07/07/power-shift). Steffi cleaned house on a decimated WTA tour that would not be competitive until 1998.
@@MoneyMatter-y2b The only one who might have been doomed was the Chinese buffet restaurants who if you believe Seles visits them even 20% less without the stabbing are not put out of business. Them and Krispy Kremes who made millions off Monica "farter" Seles.
Wow what a match and win for 16 years old Seles against in-form and confident Sabatini probably at her peak! To see Seles relentlessly hitting in the 5th set is amazing. This is historic match of 90s, thanks a lot!
It's just sad that Sabatini inspite of giving such wonderful performances she could win only one GS. A tough competitor but unfortunate. Nevertheless a true sport icon she is..
What a match!!! Monica taking the ball so early and hitting her angles, and Gaby ripping one handed backhands like no one else could, and attacking the net with athleticism and elegance. Just wow. Gaby really penetrated the court well here, punishing her groundstrokes off both sides and hitting hard well placed first serves. Monica showing how fit and resilient she was. Gaby was so strong she could handle the pace of Seles. Gaby had her chance to take it in 4. Both had their chances in 91 but young Monica would have quite the career. If only Gaby always played like this. She’d have won so many more big titles.
One classic match. I ve always Prefer Steffi but you can't argue about Monica and Gaby: they were both amazing players! I miss all these players. Monica has changed the way players play tennis it s such a shame about the stabbing... So many great matches who never happened what if...
Prefer Seles here. But would Steffi be stabbed I would've thought the exact same as you did. Navratilova-Evert, Seles-Graf, Federer-Nadal. These rivalries with opponents as talented and having complete different style of tennis playing is the reason why tennis got THAT popular. Women's tennis is relatively unpopular since the mid 2000s and men's tennis has been busier mourning Federer and Nadal for the past 3 years rather than being lifted by champions. It's a shame the stab came THAT early. After the final of Australian Open 93 and the level Seles and Graf showed, the rest of the year and the 90s was granted for these two champs. A small shame as well for Sabatini which reminds me of Ferrer and other great players who did not win many GS although they have the level just because they had, not 1, but two legends at their prime in competition.
I think that with Kyrgios, Zverev, Thiem men tennis is becoming enjoyable again and of course Federer, Nadal, Wawrinka , Djoko , Murray still playing at an amazing level... 🎾🎾👏🏾👏🏾😎😎

I wish Gaby would have won this one. Had it only been best of 3, she would have, but it was best of 5. She still could have won but as Carillo said early in the first set, Gaby had bouts of defensive play. Had she played her aggressive style, the outcome could have been different. I think Seles brain worked so differently than any player in history. She didn't necessarily "look" athletic, but she was one of the best movers out there. Most importantly, her reaction to move to a shot was superior to almost any other player at the time. Then instinctively knowing what to do with the ball was just breathtaking to watch. Whereas it seemed like Gaby had to take a quick moment to process before actually moving then when she finally got to the ball, she would hit a defensive shot many times right back to the opponent.
Monica doing what she did so well against Sabatini - really targeting her forehand. She knew Sabatini had a big wind up on her forehand and if you hit with pace to it, Gabi would often catch the ball late and drop the ball mid court. Gabi also didn't have the kind of variety on her forehand that she did with her backhand. Monica was a much cleverer tactician than people generally recognise.
Monica was a brilliant tactician, plus amazing power and precision of her shots from both sides of the racket, wonderful ball feel.. Let's add the "killer" instinct on the court. Well, unfortunately, we know very well what spoiled her career. After returning, she no longer had this passion for winning, she played rather for pleasure, although she was still a great player, one of the best there were. Today, it's hard to look for players of her class. She would destroy her rivals even easier than then..
Gabriela Sabtini at her best. She decined from late 1993. She lost all her confidence and couldn't win a big title excpet the year-end championships in 1994. She choked away so many important matches after taking the driver's seat. If she had been mentally tougher, she could of been in the same league as Seles and Graf.
Seles was beyond believe before the assault. She made a come back but was really never the same. Graf would never had won as much as she did had Seles been there in full force.
When I see these machts I always think about what Monica would surely have won if she hadn't been stabbed. The saddest page in the entire history of sport

Yes, she was a very shrewd and calculating tennis player. She was amazing in that aspect of her game.
Verla a Gabriela y su genio me hace extrañar esa epoca dorada del tenis femenino. Cuanto se la extraña a Gaby !!!
monica the best player ever in vomen tennis I miss u so much.no one plays like her. simly amazing
EPIC performances fans, unforgettable huh?
Seles was beyond believe before the assault. She made a come back but was really never the same. Graf would never had won as much as she did had Seles been there in full force.
When I see these machts I always think about what Monica would surely have won if she hadn't been stabbed. The saddest page in the entire history of sport
This is the equivalent of the 2012 Australian Open final between Novak and Rafa. Similar game styles and the more mentally determined one wins.
My joint favourite females love these two n Mary pierce
GABY.. enfrento aca a la mejor SELES........La.genialidad.de Gaby...cto se la quiere y extraña
Gabriela had the best mullet in history, should have played guitar for Bon Jovi after tennis!!

Monica Seles!Unbearably good!
its not whos the best player it who ca be the best tournament playerer
Can you manage to get the full video, 3h 47'? That would be a feat, and a feast!
Hmm i'm pretty sure i have the entire match, will have to see which hard drive it's on!
@@CindyC71 Don't leave it aside. If you do have it, please focus on it and get it done. With heartfelt thanks in advance. It's still a mystery why WTA has never posted the full video. Could there be some kind of restrictive agreement, or some similar obstacle? The video must exist. That was a very rich tournament, the apex of the women's tour. WTA must have the full video, for sure. Anyway, you may act faster than WTA, if showing it is a problem for them.
@@roobookaroo I'll do that and post everything i have of the match unedited. The only ones who keep copywrite-striking my videos is Wimbledon, not sure why mine though since other channels have their matches.
@@CindyC71 Thanks a million for your attention and care. I am sure that everybody will be overjoyed (at least the Seles fans and lovers) and appreciate your kind contribution.
@@roobookaroo You're welcome :) Have a nice night!
Lindo partido de Gaby!bueno su saque!
That was 5 set in women tennis. Now the women tennis is at this low. The ranking doesnt really show the real order of good players. Now everyone with no so good quality of tennis can win a major. Then she can easily beaten in the next tournament. Quality and consistency are at this low 👎
Poor steffi graf...her Grand Slam wins will always be tainted because of her lunatic fan, producing a pseudo champion graf
Poor Steffi??? My God, you sound like Renae Stubbs. How about the player who actually got stabbed and derailed her entire career?
ROITCK
THESE TWO LADIES WERE EXQUISITE PLAYERS. I MISS MRS. SELES. IF NOT FOR THE HORRIFIC STABBING SHE WOULD BE TODAY THE GOAT. I HAVE NO DOUBT SHE WOULD HAVE AT LEAST 25-30 GRAND SLAMS. SHE HAD 8 AT AGE 17-18. MRS. SABATINI WAS/IS A BEAUTIFUL LADY.
