Is Mark Knopfler underrated??? At least among guitarists, he is basically always considered to be among the great ones.
Probus Excogitatoris - Exactly - in the pop/rock genres, I'd put him in the top 3 - his ability to 'sculpt' each note is unmatched.

Probus Excogitatoris Their idea of "underrated" is a bit skewed. I'm not sure by what standard they're considering several of them to be "underrated," since roughly half are rather well-known by any competent musician, especially guitarist. If not by individual name, then at least by the band.
JerkStoleMyName One could argue they ARE underrated, at least by the proletariat, as they didn't make the top 10 lists for band or rock guitarists, and at the very least, Knopfler and Prince deserve to be on one of those top 10 lists. Are these guys underrated by those who study music? No. But Duane Allman and Brian May over Prince and Knopfler??? SOMEONE has their priorities out of whack.

Terry Kath is sorely missing. Could play lead and rhythm at the same time, while singing lead vocal. Amazing soul and technique. Being part of a “horn band” often leaves him off lists of great guitarists. Late, great and not forgotten!

Prince is just underrated overall. That's not to say that think he's not very popular, but his overall talent is not fully appreciated. He was such a talented and gifted musician and singer it's near impossible to praise him enough.
I’ve always said Prince was underrated as a guitarist. He did EVERYTHING he did perfectly. Except the name change.

@@confetticonfort I agree. The problem is that he was so unfathomably brilliant at everything, that the individual components are easy to overlook. Also the fact that his musical genre was not the sort of place one normally looks for guitar shredder virtuosos, and, let's face it, a large slice of guitarist-worshippers, could never bring themselves to heap too much praise on Prince.

Everyone’s lists is different
The inherent problem with WatchMojo's "underrated" lists is that they always try and go for popular opinions, which completely breaks the concept of underrated.
Also, votes are a factor in determining the lists, and voting for a underrated list is flawed on concept alone.
Yeah, it makes no sense at all.
Yeah, if one guy gets a bunch of votes he isn't really underated. So, would #10 be least or most underated?
James Mantel actually Robert Fripp who is in the honorable mentions is probably the most underrated guitarist here
Then why is he an honorable mention, Alon? It's a paradox: more votes, more underated, but that defies itself.
Not sure why Alex Lifeson is even on the list. He gets all sorts of accolades and props for his playing.

Knopfler, Moore, Lifeson, Gallagher and Prince have no business being on this list. Anybody who plays guitar will tell you these guys are legends in world of guitar playing.

"Just because other guitarists recognize him as an influence doesn't mean he isn't underrated" You basically are making my point, legends in the industry do recognize him as an influence, and if you read my post I stated people THAT PLAY guitar will tell you he's a legend and should not be underrated. Then you go on to quote Rolling Stone and finish by calling them clowns? I agree they are clowns and that list lacks credibility. Then you add the fact he has some recognizable riffs in the rock industry, not to mention he has a guitar chord name after him. I'm not sure what you are arguing, unless you are stating AL isn't a great player. Now in regards to most underrated I would say "Andrew Latimer" from the band Camel (check out Stationary Traveler) should belong on the list. I would also include that dude from Mahogany Rush, "Frank Marino". The reason they don't get props is their band never got the attention they deserve. Rush on the other hand had a huge following even thought most of their music was never mainstream/radio play.
@Outrageous Accent! Relative to Peart and Lee, I would agree. People don't talk about him being a monster on the guitar compared to the accolades showered on Peart and Lee. I suppose great guitarist are a dime a dozen and that might be the reason Lifeson is talked about as being the third wheel, however guitarist know the dude has chops and is very creative.
I'm pretty sure that the list is for the unqualified as to the guitar enthusiast. Prince is not known as a guitar player by the general public. Unless you have seen him live or listen to his earlier work some may think he's more of an R&B artist. So, from a public recognition point of view, he does belong on the list. Mark and Gary do not...they are only famous for playing guitar.. and WORLD famous at that.

Nobody who can play guitar underrates any of these players. I think these are probably more "unknown by the general public" or "relatively unknown for playing guitar" for whatever reason.

I commented that (for example) Kurt Cobain, John Lennon, Neil Young, etc, are to me (and many listeners) very underrated because they were labeled as "singers". These 3, to me, are in the top 20 best guitarists.
I agree. Only a fool would underrate, for example, Rory Gallagher or even worse, to underrate Gary Moore who are both exceptional guitarists. Both this list and this channel are incompetent especially when it comes to Rock music...

Jim Martin, Larry LaLonde, Mick Mars, Adam Jones, Chris Poland, Jerry Cantrell, Steve Lukather, Neal Schon, and Mick Taylor are all very underrated.

Mick Taylor was in The Rolling Stones golden age and he doesn’t get the credit he needs so underrated he’s the guy that replaced Brian Jones and probably the second best guitarist behind Keith during that period whether your Team Brian, Team Mick, or Team Ronnie

Mick Taylor is NOT underrated, just go to any stones video and all you read in the comments is " the Mick Taylor years are the best " this is about a band who has been seen by more people than the Pope. Millions upon millions love the stones and millions love Mick Taylor, so how can he be underrated?
Prince is a worthy choice. I can't argue with that. He wasn't a guitarist as much as a musician and a songwriter. I'm not saying he's not an amazing guitar player. He's a killer guitar player. But the guitar just fits in as only a piece of the whole which is the musical genius of Prince.

Jonny Greenwood is often overlooked but his solos are so unique and often don't sound like they should work but the messiness makes it a fascinating listen. Also he's talented on so many other instruments, his ear for music helps create beautiful melodies.
I wasn't aware that Mark Knopfler was under rated as a guitarist.

There are enough (like me) who praise him, and he certainly deserves it. I've seen many cite him as a favorite.

Yeah, almost all the names on this list are (I think) pretty well recognized. Maybe they're not recognized like Hendrix, Clapton, or Page, but still, it's not like they're anonymous.
Underrated would be someone like Elliot Easton from The Cars. Very innovative and influential player.

If there were one guitarist who was truly underrated, it would be Elliot Easton. His playing was a power pop master class. He never lost track of the melody in order to shred.

Yeah, but he really wasn't "underrated". A ton of people understood how talented and great he was, even back in the 80s people knew it. I'd say Lindsey Buckingham is much higher on that list, because his stuff is just super impressive and very hard to duplicate, but he almost never gets mentioned as a guitar great.

Great list and Yes Prince is totally underrated as a guitarist!! I wouldn't consider Rory Gallagher underrated as he's inspired Brian May, The Edge, Alex Lifeson, Johnny Marr and Glen Tipton among others. There is also the Legendary/Mythical shout-out from Jimi Hendrix
How in hell is prince underrated ? She said the artists on here are not household names which doesn't apply to him . prince sells out concerts in minutes and has a ton of hits and is inducted into the rr hall of fame

Prince is VERY overrated. I know 20 people that are better guitarists than Prince. I do give him credit for being capable, however and he did give a little credit to pop music.
In the early 80's I went to see The Cure. At one point Robert Smith picks up a guitar and plays a blistering solo like Prince and then passed off the guitar and went back to singing like that's just what singers do. I had no idea.
#1 should be Jason Becker. He was so good at 15 in the 80s he was playing Yngwie Malmsteen, and Van Halen perfectly. He started a duo project with Marty Friedman, Marty being older than him tried to keep up with Jason but he was so diverse and passionate he was better than Marty at 17 years old. Jason ended up becoming the guitarist for David Lee Roth, replacing Steve Vai. Marty Friedman was jealous because he had only became the lead guitarist for megadeth. Jason recorded a few songs on David Lee Roth's album, but just right when Jason was going to be touring with David Lee Roth he started suffering from ALS. The doctors gave him 3-5 years to live, and the first thing he asked is if "I'd still be able to tour" He went to meet with David for the first time in person, instead of being full of excitement he had to inform David that he could no longer play the guitar, that he had ALS. He could no longer play notes or chords. Not long after, he could no longer walk, talk, or move anything other than his eyes. Yet he never gave up his passion to make music, he is still alive to this day composing music with the help and support from his parents, alongside many of the world's best guitarists playing for him as he would compose music.
There's days where I feel like giving up, but then I remind myself of Jason Becker. He is one of my biggest inspirations today, even when his world came crashing down on him, he never gave up on his dreams.
Eddie Van Halen was without a doubt one of the most inspiring guitarists, but Eddie had the chance to show the world his talent, and passion for guitar... Unlike Jason, who had never had the chance to follow his dreams and to show the world his talents and passion.
Rest in peace Van Halen, you will forever be known as the best guitarist to ever live.
I agree with Prince, he was one of the best guitarists out there but most people had no idea how great he actually was.

Mark Knopler is not underrated. He is well respected and makes most lists.
Yeah but he's only known in the guitar/musician community. He's not a household name whatsoever which is why he's on the list. Nuno B. is the same way, he's amazing!! But only true guitar fans know his work
That makes sense except for the fact that there is no other reason for a guitarist to be known for anything other than being a guitarist. Prince is really the only person on here that qualifies as a "household name" for being something besides a player...BTW, any guitarist could tell you Prince is an outstanding player without having seen this list. By the standard you're speaking of, Randy Rhoads, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, George Lynch, Zakk Wylde, Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Albert Lee, etc. etc. etc. would ALL be underrated guitar players...the only one left would be Eddie Van Halen by proxy of Valerie Bertinelli and Michael Jackson. No...this list is a joke...

Prince is known for his music talent. But people don’t understand or know how good a guitarist he is. It’s an area of his talent that isn’t well known or recognized. Odds are most people don’t know he did play guitar and that’s why he’s underrated as a guitarist.
Some people whole career are defined by their guitar skills. Prince isn’t one of them, yet deserves to be.

I know Ray what your saying, you got to remember the people making these list don't really know, you and I do, I got Gibbons and Moore in my all time top ten I would have to look at my list but Knopfler would probably be on it top 15 for sure with Hendrix, Allman, SRV, Johnny Winter, Derek Trucks and Haynes.

Larry lalonde of primus Is pretty underrated the way his guitar blends with les claypools bass is something definitely different and special

Dicky Betts (Allman Brothers), Martin Barre (Jethro Tull) are also players who don't get nearly enough recognition.

Whether or not his music is "good" to you is subjective. Everyone has different taste in music and that's totally ok. ...but his level of talent and output are not a debatable opinion. The little dude was a textbook example of a musical genius/savant. He has enough backlog to release a new album every year for the next century. He could play any instrument he wanted and got one of the biggest record deals ever - at 18 years old.

I was hoping they would play us something from Blur that a kid learning guitar couldn't figure out without too much difficulty. Don't get me wrong, they are great live but Blur on an 'underrated guitarist' list? John 5 is up there with Prince!!!
Some of the list is okay, but underappreciated has to include incredible guitarists that most people don't even know of, like James Stevenson and Marty Willson-Piper.
As Eric Clapton once answered when he was asked by a journalist how it was to be the best guitar player in the world: "Don't know, ask Prince." :-)

Clapton was teached how to play a guitar at a concert in England where Jan Akkerman played first, Clapton should play after him but he refused after watching Akkerman and went home.....he only doesn't mention Akkerman because he was humiliated to the bone!!

George Harrison is a severely underrated and unappreciated guitarist, the melody and the flow and the simplicity, he was really a genius. Eric Clapton has even said so on numerous occasions

@thewonderofyou1 that's fair. However, we're comparing a blues dude to a folk dude. You want completely different abilities. Peter Green is one of the best in blues while Linsey is one of the best in his field (his fingerstyle). I'm sure Lindsay couldn't have the feel Peter had and I'm sure Peter didn't have the fingerstyle abilities Lindsay had.

Prince was just an incredible all around talent. I bet he would've been a pretty good actor as well. I never saw Purple Rain, but I hear it did well.
Make any argument you like, Prince truly is was an underrated guitarist. His R&B style, funk and other urban genres of music relegated him to a smaller audience. That said, his raw musical talent was mostly overlooked because he was a brilliant singer, writer and showman.

In the last couple years, he has become the absolute world wide icon of rhythm guitar - so guess not really underrated anymore (in the early times, yes, he was). btw, an interesting quote from his brother Angus, in an interview: oh, you ask me how it feels to be (one of the) best guitarist of the world? come on, i am not even the best guitarist in my band!
Terry Kath belongs on this list. Listen to some early Chicago and prepare to be blown away.
When they first started out, they backed Hendrix who told one of Kaths Chicago bandmates that "your guys better then me". Legend has it that they were going to make an album together around the time of Jimi's demise.
Prince, RIP, is a pretty good choice here. He played some damn good stuff and is almost never given his due for it. Hell, I'm a metal head/shredder and I've liked Prince for decades - he's too all around good to not like his music.

Ok I get your talking about the underrated guitarists but I agree prince is one of the underrated guitars but is a legend and a icon. He transformed the music industry. Each had his own style, so while Roy was great picking as a country artist could he compete on the Rock and Roll stage? And the same with these guys, they were/are great rock players but how could they do in the country stage where it is far far more structured and like classical, needs to be played the way it was written. VERY VERY few country stars could solo the way rockers could. Besides the sound that is the difference between the 2, the 50's and early 60's rockers were structured and played a certain way, it wasn't until the later 60's and into the80's that the guitarist really became became big in Rock.
Then it just took over and everyone was trying to outdo everyone else. Keith Richards wanted to be better than George Harrison, Harrison wanted to be better than Clapton who wanted to be better that Dave Davies who wanted to out play Townsend who wanted to put Beck to shame ... or Angus Young wanting to blow Eddie Van off the stage, and so on. So from the late 60's to basically the late 90's, bands were built on the singer and the guitarist, now, music is such that the industry doesn't seem to truly want to build anyone up and that could be because the industry makes more money when there are no stars demanding big paychecks and royalties.

Mark Knoplfer is rated as the 14th best guitarist on the rolling stones the last time I checked so I would say he is not underrated at all

You almost never hear Neal Schon listed but he came up with Santana and then is really what drove Journey to major success.
I’ve never looked at any of those guys as under rated! They are all great Guitarist in their own right. Did you ask any guitarist about this? Hell Prince is one of the reasons I picked a guitar up.
An underrated guitarists that nobody ever talks about, is John Fogerty. That guy could really play!

Absolutely correct. That man is dedicated. He's 74 years old and says he still finds time every single day to pick up his guitar for a little practice session. I'd love to see what he refers to as "practice". I wonder just what his routine is?

There's some blues guitarist's that should be on this list, but blues isn't the only source of good guitarists, I respect that you like the blues, but that doesn't mean they are the best, people that love Rock and other styles of music feel the same way that you do about their personal likes.
I consider most of these to be THE heroes of guitar, hardly underrated by me or society, imo.
First off, thanks for sharing this high quality video, I enjoyed watching. However, Prince is the only pick I agree with. I think people over look his playing because he's "weird." Almost everyone else listed is pretty well regarded and are often featured in guitar magazines.
The most under appreciated and underrated guitarist of all time is mark tremonti, people just think of his creed stuff and say "meh" but that stuff is really complex and creative and catchy, not to mention the countless heavy bangers he has with alter bridge and tremonti, all clean riffs this guy makes are the most beautiful unique riffs you will come across, truly the most slept on guitarist of all time
I don't really see how Moore, Knopfler and Prince can be on this list. Underrated? Since when? They are among the most critically acclaimed guitarists of all time.

Adam Wood, you just proved the point of this list. Prince was a very underrated guitarist. Phill Collen of Def Leppard, Billy Gibbons of Zz Top, Eric Clapton and Joe Satriani just to name a few all said he was a great guitar player. He’s jammed with Clapton and Santana. Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters said he was the greatest musician he’d ever seen perform. Gene Simmons also said he was great. Plant and Page wanted to work with him back in the 80’s. Great musician period.
Gary Moore underrated? You guys haven't got a jar of glue, he's a legend rated right up there with his contemperaries or at leastwhen he was alive.
