- Why Every Photographer NEEDS a Telephoto Lens the Fujifilm XF 55-200mm Review. Let me explain myself - EVERY photograph needs a telephoto lens in their kit! Why? Watch this vlog...
Today we will explore what happens in comparison to shooting with a wide-angle lens then taking the same composition to telephoto. It tells a completely different story within the image and gives the viewer another dimension.

loving the outros Matthew lol.
Great images this week and not long watched Nigel Danson's vlog this week on the same subject about shooting with the telephoto lens. Think if I looked at my lightroom catalog it would tell a tale about how little I use my telephoto so maybe its time to start challenging myself and leave the 24-70mm off the camera and focus for a bit on the 70-200mm
Couldnt agree more. I have tried so much lately to shoot "out of the norm" never hurt anyone! Makes you get out there and shoot, but better yet improves your eye as a photographer!
Well done Mathew you really nailed it. The church & mountain shot is superb.Keep them coming -Rgds, JA
Thanks John. Really appreciate it, hopefully winter will add a new dimension to the landscape!
I have the XT2 and have been looking at getting the 55-200mm. Thanks for the review and sample photos! You just got a new subscriber! Howdy from Texas ;)
Amazing Carlos. Really glad I could help you with this decision. Let me know how it goes when you get the lens. Or tag me in some photos on Instagram would love to see your work! 🤗👌
@@matthewstorerphotography sweet! There is a blood moon lunar eclipse this month on the 20th or 21st and would love to test it out then. Will you be taking photos of it? Would love to see those photos!
Ahhh I will have to have a look! I have been rammed inside lately just editing, editing and editing so would be nice to get out and do something with the camera again! Great idea thanks
@@matthewstorerphotography yeah I bet. Yes get out because they say the next one isn't until 2021!
Thx for the video... I have been thinking about getting the lens. After your enthusiasm, you have pushed me a little further to getting it.. lol
Hahaha awesome. That is what I wish to hear. Trust me, it will not let you down. Amazing lens
Love the enthusiasm in your videos. Don’t currently have a telephoto but as I love landscape and hiking so much I think I will have to add this lens to my kit at some point. The 80mm from 16-80 is good for most uses but I can definitely see the compression at 200 hits different haha
Awesome! Thank you!
Buongiorno from Italy... rain, rain.... So good to see some sun and mountains that you are enjoying. Great vlog, straight to the point, no pfaffing
Around. Agree about the 200mm lens. Amazing shots Mathew. Ciao.
Thanks so much. Really love using this lens so wanted to share that love with everyone :D
Nice one Matthew, looks an awesome location too.
Yeah certainly is mate. Love everywhere in Slovenia!!
Thanks for another great video. Can’t wait for you films from Asia.
Thanks so much Alex. Spoiler, huge plot twist....
Ooh.
Excellent video Matthew. Also, could you tell me what tripod you're using in the video?
Thanks :)
Thanks so much Asim - Manfrotto MT055CXPRO3 :)
I just get my new X-T4 with 16-80mm lens , and I think to complement my equipment the next purchase will be this telephoto lens, thanks for the info !!
Good choice!
I bought this fujinon 55-200 a couple weeks ago. I have not used it much yet but I had it out last weekend. I have not looked at them yet. But I like it’s feel
Get out there and use it Paul. Crazy how much it has changed my type of photography :) hiking to a summit tomorrow where i will hopefully use it a lot! Hope the photography is going well :)
I appreciate the video. Thank you man.
No problem mate :)
I never wait for sunset or sundown, I’m never at a location long enough. Someday. Excellent video. I’m shopping around for Fuji lenses.
You really should, not just for a photography stand point just its super relaxing and great way to clear the mind from these crazy hectic lives we live. What lenses you shopping around for? :)
Matthew Storer I wanted a nice wide angle lens (just bough the 18-55 f2.8-4) and a portrait lens since I want to do more of that.
Forgot to mention you are correct about the sunset thing.
That is a great lens. I use that lens also. The f2.8 fixed is much sharper, but to big, heavy and pricy for me. I agree with you, but make sure you buy what YOU need not anyone else ;)
Its great to see that you're replying each and every comment i hope this one fits my xa7
No problem, glad I can help! You'll love this lens :D
Been there in summer 2018 Triglav national park is mega. Hikers and photographers paradise. And Bled well I don’t need to say anything. Amazing place.
So true man. Slovenia is a special place for photographers but just noone really knows enough about it yet. Give it time :)
I'm thinking of getting a telephoto for Fuji too, thanks to this video 😅😅 (great production quality, subbed
HAHAHAHA well perfect! :D I hope this video helped as much as it possibly could. Well this all comes down to you. I have personally never used the 50-230 before, it is the only zoom tele I have not used. The 55-140 is clearly the most impressive lens for me, but too heavy and expensive for a travel photographer. The 18-135 is an amazing focal range for me with travelling, but i was after something a little sharper and it matched my other lenses better 10-24 and 18-55. The 55-200mm was a great fit for me, not to expensive like the 50-140 or as heavy. The 50-230 I have heard great reports from, but couldnt see it being as sharp - as I said never used it so can not say 100% Sorry to not fully help haha
@@matthewstorerphotography Thank you so much, appreciate it
No problem mate. Let me know what lens you get :)
Been looking at getting that 55-200 lens. I keep waffling between the expensive and heavy 50-140, but I honestly don't think I'll use the speed the 2.8 aperture gives me. I have other lenses for portraits and stuff like that. By the way, have you played around with vintage lenses? I have a few, but I keep going back to the Minolta MD Rokkor 50mm f/1.4. It's CRAZY sharp and the bokeh is just breathtaking! So fun to use a manual lens too. :)
Small pet peeve here too... but it's called a panorama, not a panoramic. Panoramic is an adjective, panorama is a noun.
If you never shoot around the 2.8 I wouldnt suggest it. To large, heavy etc. I believe the sharpness is almost the same around the f/9 range which i shoot most of my landscapes at. Never played aroind with the older vintage lenses doesnt interest me much.
Thanks for the English lesson, forgive me - Aussie, we butcher the language! :/
I have exactly the same decision to make . Agree with your thought process just hesitated because of the slow apeture
Only you can make that decison. Was easy for me to save the money, weight and size values to spend elsewhere for never shooting the f2.8 aperture. Only for video but I rarely use anything over 55mm.
Hi Matthew, regarding the last image you showed us, I believe you said you shot at f/8, what was the focal point you used?
Yes it was shot at f/8 the focal point was right on the church down the bottom. So the mountains were not perfectly sharp to show some depth in the image. Also only 50% sharpened in post production compared to 100% on the hill + church :) hope this helps...
@@matthewstorerphotography Yes, thanks
Very good video I have just brought a XT2 and now looking at getting the 55-200 :-)
Awesome Angela! That will be a killer of a setup once you get it :D
How is it compared to the 50-140?
Never owned or used the 50-140 to me its just way to big for what I would use it for. It would be much sharper lens, but bigger, heavier and more expensive
great shot but y didn't you wait till sundown/rise? :)
Because i was just in Škofja Loka on the off chance and it was mainly just a location scout mission for me to work out where and when to shoot. :)
I love your enthusiasm, I get stoked like this too.
Thanks so much. Super glad you enjoyed it :D
Another fabulous photograph, just loved it, all that info in RAW really shows up. I normally shoot Jpg for holiday snaps but l will certainly change to RAW for anything serious. Slovenia wow l have to come back, for a few months this time. Hope all is going well on the Asia trip.
Regards Rob
Thanks so much Robbie. Yeah i always shoot in RAW, but even just for holiday snaps lightroom does such a good job only after a little adjustments to them. Yes please do come back to Slovenia its a bloody amazing part of the world!!!
Should I go for single 18-135 or 18-55 + 55+200 ..? I'm limited on budget but still looking for sharper glass :(
If you can afford it 18-55 + 55-200. Thats how I started off and both amazing lenses
@@matthewstorerphotography thankyou so much for your response, it's really help me a lot
Now I confuse when I go to store and want pick up primes (35mm f2 + 50mm f2) and then I just realized the prices are so close to 16-55 f2.8 😂😂 which one better in low light and which one sharper?
You feel like that lens is big? Not saying you’re wrong, but it’s just funny how I feel like it’s small and light. Coming from full frame has probably changed my standards for size and weight. Also, I’ve become so used to having the 90 f2 on my lens, so when I got this lens and it was basically the same weight, I was very happy! I’m also very happy to be shooting with Fujifilm now days instead of ff!
Great shots btw! :)
Yeah that is so true, what you said reminded me of the days I was carrying around my FF canon gear and I would never complain again! haha thanks for the review of my sizing chart lol
Love your clear explanations Matthew. Subbed. To shoot 12 Apostles with my XT20 thinking of getting the 55-200 vs 18-135 but need to keep budget down, your opinion?
No problem. Really glad it was easy for you to understand. First of all that is a hard question when I have no idea what your other lenses are? What other lenses you shooting with?
Matthew Storer 16mm, 27mm, 18-55
In that case I would highly recommend getting the 55-200mm its sharper longer reach. I use the 18-135mm for a single travel lens :) 55-200mm would be my fav lens
Matthew Storer thanks Matthew. Keep enjoying your adventures behind the lens
Thanks!!
No problem!
I freaking love this lens and can't imagine not having it with me on any hike. It's a keeper.
For sure totally agree with you!
Which Fuji camera you are using with this lens.
At that stage the X-T1 now I use the X-T3
@@matthewstorerphotography I want to start photography with Fujifilm X series camera. I have narrowed down to XT-2, XT-3 and XH-1. Which one you suggest for a beginner?
I got this lens 4 years ago, and i love it
It is an amazing lens that is for sure!
Great shots ...the camera looks like an XT3....
Thanks so much. It wasnt but I do have one now :)
@@matthewstorerphotography What camera was it? What profile did you use? Did you shoot this video in H.265 4k/60p 400 Mbps?
Hey this was filmed with a Canon G5X?
What camera did you use for this video?
Everything was shot on the Canon G5X insane little camera has a few downfalls but most small cameras do! No audio input is a huge downfall for me
Too enthusiastic
hahah sorry?
I'm sure similar results could be produced using a more economical lens
Yeah I guess it could. For sure
That fucking music but I like this guy so I will keep watching
HAHAHAHA I will try and improve in the future on my music selection :P
Landscapes with a Tele..?........HERETIC! No doubt some "purist" landscape shooters are cursing this video. However, I agree with you, teles and landscapes are a great combo. While not a landscape shooter per se, as my background is photojournalism, however, I dabble. I also use the Fuji system after defecting from Canon after 38 years and I have several long Fujinon glass. What landscapes I do shoot, I use a mixture of teles and wides. My favourite is the 50-140, often matched the Fuji1.4x converter. And if I am feeling adventurous, I'll break out the 100-400.
HAHAH well said cameramn655. The times are changing and peoples are really trying to find a way to make images that have been shot so many times, unique and their own! I couldnt agree more! How have you found the change from full frame DSLR to mirrorless fujifilm systems? The 50-140 is an amazing lens but to heavy and large for what i need, but as you said you are interested in photojournalism - which makes this lens perfect for you!
Is it just me or is 50 per cent of RUclips Australian lol
Hahaha no idea? I am in Europe and I feel like its 50% British lol
Nah, but for some reason Australians are definitely over-represented among photography youtube channels!
Nice shots, and nice lens, even if the real telephoto fujifilm beast is the 100-400mm, sharper and longer (600eq) and you can add a 1.4x or 2x teleconverter (reaching 900eq or 1200 eq).
And even the new 200mm f2 (alzo in kit with 1.4x teleconverter, becoming a 300 f2.8) is awesome (probably sharper than diamond), but it cost like a car 😂
Thank you very much. Yes 100% true, the 100-400 is an amazing lens. I have only ever rented it - soon to realize that its way to big expensive and heavy for my needs. I always have a 3 step rule for everything I own - "It needs to have 3 purpose for my photography otherwise I don't need. Size, weight and cost are a huge thing for me as I travel 95% of the time with my gear and hike overnight sometimes days. 100-400 would be lovely, but god damn I am not carrying that around haha. Wildlife, sports or action photography I would own it asap. love hearing your thought and comments always appreciate another fujifilm users input :D
@@matthewstorerphotography yes I understand you. I only have the cheap 50-230, I'm thinking about upgrading to 55-200 or 50-140. (the 100-400 is too zoomed for me, I need something starting from ~55mm).
I'd like to change because mine is too dark, and I don't know if the 55-200 would be bright enough for me.. but, meanwhile, the 50-140 is too heavy and too expensive.
So I wait and save money for now :)
P.S. I use the samyang 12mm f2 for wide shots, it's awesome. And I can do even boket photos with it :D (it can shot impressive close ups)
That's awesome man, super glad to hear you are getting things for you, not for other people. Super important buddy! :D Keep up the good work :D
Get the gfx 50r and thank me later :)
I wish I had the money too!
lol...love your enthusiasm, but holy crap, you're a brave man shooting that lens at 200mm with the center column fully raised. A mouse can fart near the tripod and create noticeable camera vibrations the way you've got it setup.
Hahaha this is so true mate, i only dont it for filming so I wouldn't have to be bending over all the time. I never use the column unless I have to! Totally agree with you! You shoot Fuji?
@@matthewstorerphotography Yeah. X-T2 landscape stuff.
Pic looks noisy
Sorry about that
