One added benefit is that the rig protects the flip open door. I have a similar cage for a6600 and makes the camera handle better, especially giving my pinky a place to rest and not hang freely.
SmallRig puts out excellent products. I have the cage for my Sony A6600, as well as a S/R cage for my iPhone 13 Max. The quality, fit and finish is outstanding. I couldn’t be happier.
Yes, but you need a gimbal that can do vertical also, because in order to balance it needs to be mounted in a different spot. I never tried mounting it vertical in the normal spot though if that is what you are thinking, because it won't balance there most likely.
If you want real extra protection, yes. My camera fell off the trunk of my car the other day somehow and landed on rocks. Luckily somehow the cage took the entire hit! I had zero damage to the camera and lens which is crazy. Honestly I got really lucky, but that cage saved the camera and/or lens I am convinced!
Totally unrelated but I’m curious what type of lens I would need for unboxing videos? I currently have the 18-135 kit lens with the Sony a6600. Any advice is greatly appreciated
I often use my Sony 18-55mm that I got with my Nex-6 years ago and it works great still, os I'm sure your 18-135mm will do a great job. If you want a more narrow depth of field then the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 lens is perfect!
@@Jason_Hermann thank you! I’ve been trying to shoot a video showing the screen on my iPhone and I just can’t get it to focus correctly. Any videos or tips that would help?
@@thegreycompany531 I would use a mini tripod or something so your camera does not move, then you can focus the camera from whatever the minimum focus distance at the focal length you're using. Kinda have to play with it a bit. You can also manual focus if the cameras are not moving. All my How-To Videos are this way: ruclips.net/p/PLFE32AB0363640EDF
Hello Jason, thanks for reviewing this cage, looks absolutely gorgeous and the functionality of the cage is very attractive for users, can you confirm whether the NFC still works with the cage installed on the camera?
I have a small rig for my a6700 is there a piece I can buy for my small rig to connect a tripod or monopod without having to take my camera out the rig
Yes, you can screw any quick release tripod plate into the bottom of the small rig cage. The quick release plates usually come with tripods when you buy them with the heads.
Nice! Can you gently tell me if I can use it like L bracket on tripod too? ( put a6400 on a tripod in a vertical way ,what kind ? 3/8 ,1/4 etc ? ) Many thanks in advance great video 📹
Not with this particular rig here, but this SmallRig unit does have the L Bracket: www.smallrig.com/copy-of-smallrig-l-bracket-for-sony-a6300-6400-apl2331c.html
Mine arrived today for my A6400 with the silicone grip. Nice grip with a slight extension on the bottom to get a better hold. 👍🏼

Good call!

Thanks for sharing!
My pleasure, you guys make an awesome product!
Will you recommend this to a street photographer? Or is it heavy that it will be a pain? I like the protection though
Yes I would recommend it!
cool I'm looking for a sony a74 small rig. nothing on Amazon uk yet . thank you for the video 📹 😀
Good luck!
@@Jason_Hermann gonna need it
Can you put it on a gimbal and be able to record vertical?
Yes, but you need a gimbal that can do vertical also, because in order to balance it needs to be mounted in a different spot. I never tried mounting it vertical in the normal spot though if that is what you are thinking, because it won't balance there most likely.
hey Jason! does the cage interfere with mounting a flash on the hotshoe like a Godox Flash or a Godox trigger
The cage is notched out to accommodate flash units and audio mics, so yeah I think they will fit...
Cool
Would you recommend I get this if I use the camera only for photography?
If you want real extra protection, yes. My camera fell off the trunk of my car the other day somehow and landed on rocks. Luckily somehow the cage took the entire hit! I had zero damage to the camera and lens which is crazy. Honestly I got really lucky, but that cage saved the camera and/or lens I am convinced!
@@Jason_Hermann yo bruh i still dunno how the cage can really protect the camera and lens , u r really lucky ❤
Jay…. Are the owned by Ulanizi? I can’t get a straight answer.
I have no idea Yankee, but I do know they are made ins China.
Nice review man! Question , can you still add a strap to this cage? since I saw you had to use the strap mounts to mount the cage.
Thanks
Yes, absolutely, but you would need to add a new mountain point for the strap on the one side.
i managed adding the strap by squeezing the right side of it on the right upper "hole/mount" of the cage. The left side remains as if there wasnt cage
Did not see the brand of the desk tripod in description what is it? Thanks

@Jason_Hermann thank you I must have threw mines away by accident I'll have to order a new plate
Is it possible to mount 18-135 with this rig?
Yes, this rig does not prevent the mounting of lenses...
Where did you get that tripod.
I got it on Amazon: geni.us/PvDs
