What I enjoy about this channel... one guy doing work and all the shop noise that comes from it. No fancy editing voice overs and music overlay. A much better channel than Awe me in my opinion and the forge work is just as good if not better. I would love to buy one of your blades but sadly I have little disposable income these days, I can and will remain happy seeing their creation though.

On a more serious note, i'd love to hear more about salvaging the anvil, it's history, age, and who it was made by, etc. Sounds like its all steel. Looks awesome.
I loved how you used string to measure the circumference of the stump, quick and accurate way to do it. I know allot of craftsmen who use a tape measure and math to get the same results in 5-10 minutes as you did in less than a minute.
When I saw you take off the mag-chuck from your surface grinder I was thinking "Oh no, no way he's going to put that thing on there." Well.. I guess I was proven wrong, lol. Guess most people would've just used an angle grinder with a flap disk and called it a day. Your extra effort definitely shows, though, the end result is really, really nice.
Haha, I can imagine that it's really heavy! I definitely agree that it pays off. In my mind, you can only make a good product if you have good tools for the job.
just found some of these anvils on Marktplaats (...Netherlands).... one is only good for just decoration, the other is in the North ..😐 sigh...dont have time now to get it...(busy with boat restoration/upgrading) well, hopefully there will be more in future
neil petersen on the marketplace. I think it is around 100 jears old. The type is German. Called a church window anvil. But I think it is a pagan Design depicting the tree of life.
Freerk Wieringa last time I checked it was debunked as a myth. What really helps with the high pitched rings is bolting it firmly down to the anvil stand and floor underneath.
I just got an anvil...finally, a William foster. It was completely covered in paint and looked awful, so far all I've done is wire brushed off all the paint. I'm not sure whether I should bother welding the edges as they're in reasonably good condition other than a few nicks and whether I should try to grind the face down to as flat as possible like you did. I'm still yet to begin forging so having a perfectly flat anvil probably wouldn't make too much difference to me. Would you suggest doing it anyway or at a later stage?
I would also add that if you are just starting forging and have reasonable edges on your anvil to wait to repair them until you get better at forging so you can repair not just the original issues but the new ones you added while learning the anvil as well.
Fumwum it is always a trade but it is not a new hardend and tempered anvil. You did not see it in the video but most welds where made to repair real cracks of a previously made bad repair.
Hey man I have an anvil that has some pretty nasty gouge marks in it from some one using it as a cutting table for there torch. I wanted to weld it up but upon researching it most people said don't. What type of rod did you use and will I ruin it if I do weld on it. It's a 1926 solid steel Paragon
Danny Kioa it depends. If there are cutting marks than the steel is already ruined a bit by the heat. It is always a trade.... I use base electrodes they are hard and make a good bond with cast steel. In my experience the older anvils are not that hard so....

M Ouija thanks! That's about the period I am aiming for!
Damn that looks absolutely awesome good for another century
Erik Kartman I am curious to see how it holds up compared to my Swedish anvil. Lol
Yes, looks good, but this www.toking.de/blog/amboss-stock works maybe better. ;)
Fix It I thought about that method but saw some old ones with this one.
Great!
Cool anvil! A good machine shop can precision grind the surface for you and save you a lot of work!
This looks interesting...
Beautiful old girl..the wear on the top! Wow
Yes. Absurd..
Piece of Mordor's Gate.. Nice Salvage. TY Bro!
Amigo show de bola.
I'm just learning the concepts, so can someone please tell me what the chain wrapped around the base is for?
So nice. I’ve wanted a church window anvil forever but they are impossible to find in the USA
LMAO at 9:35 to 9:59 !!! Good use of an office chair for storing heavy shit. I wasn't sure it would last--heh!
s lichens that's how you should use office equipment
Leuke aanwinst Freerk 👊

.rzr thanks! it also pays off every time you make a sword an see it is straight. Very frustrating working on big pieces on a warped anvil.
Also I have to admit I was a bit tired this weekend. That thing is really heavy. Lol

Love those nails.

they are crude..... the steel is old.... but beautiful
is that a hardfacing electrodes?
Uffda, now that’s heavy metal \m/ (-.-) \m/
Looks like Thor's anvil !
FordFracture yes. Totally.
Watching you grunt that anvil around makes my hernia hurt.
question from a novice : Why the chain around the base of your other anvil? Great vids, love your work.
Victorious
Wow. How old is that and where did you find it. What is it’s country of origin. And beautiful work as always.

Just watched it again, and I agree it could be depicted as the tree of life. Very interesting. Love your videos. My whole family watches. Thank you.
neil petersen cool! Thanks for watching!
I’ve always wondered, what is the purpose of all the chains wrapped around the bottom of the anvil? Just curious.. great video though, keep it up
It lowers the high sounds.
Freerk Wieringa last time I checked it was debunked as a myth. What really helps with the high pitched rings is bolting it firmly down to the anvil stand and floor underneath.
Isen Klopr it works for me.
Nice big face and the good height. Look forward to seeing it in action.

SE FullmetalJake I would first start forging. I whant it flat because I make big swords. If you make knives you can use the flat areas
Freerk Wieringa Ok, thanks for the advice :)
I would also add that if you are just starting forging and have reasonable edges on your anvil to wait to repair them until you get better at forging so you can repair not just the original issues but the new ones you added while learning the anvil as well.
Freerk Wieringa ....where did you find this great anvil. I love old church window anvils. Not easy to find.
Ahhhhh...👌
The heat from the welding won't hurt the face's temper?
I think the anvil is made out of some low carbon steel and not tempered at all so it doesn't make much difference, I guess (I am not an expert)
Fumwum it is always a trade but it is not a new hardend and tempered anvil. You did not see it in the video but most welds where made to repair real cracks of a previously made bad repair.

Beautiful work, and next time kiss the anvil. :D

I think it's an south German anvil but im not sure
Those anvils are meant to be used as swages too so tot shouldn’t strap it down like that
Why not old ways worked back then

NIce job, I thought you were going to kiss it at the end lol. Would have been a nice ending to give it a big wet kiss :)
