Having grown up not far from Shanagolden and now calling the USA home, this song takes me back to West Limerick every time I listen to it. Nobody can sing it like Margo. God bless to all who gave their lives in the cause of Irish freedom.
A great song written by Sean McCarthy from Kerry, He had no rhyming town in Kerry and luckily he had Shanagolden in County Limerick. A great song and someday I might visit Shanagolden on my way down to Kerry!
Margo sings this song so well, as I think that it was meant to be sung by Sean McCarthy from Finuge in Kerry who wrote the song. A wonderful combination of Donegal and Kerry
Heard this song just after Ashling Murphy had died. Will forever think of her now when I hear this song. RIP Ashling, you beautiful soul. Amazing song. It's so beautiful I could cry, Margo what a voice!
It is a great song and it does evoke varying memories in us. It is a new memory for me now when I have read your post. When I hear this song again, I will indeed remember Ashling. Thank you Aidan for keeping Ashling in our thoughts.

This song will be played at my Grandfather's funeral this week as we lay him to rest , it was 1 of his favourite songs I've great memories of him singing it at my uncle's wedding. RIP Grandad 😢😢💚🧡🍀🇮🇪 🇮🇪
Thank you Margo for singing this song, a song of our freedom and a song to cherish all our heroes who died in the battle against the invading imperialists who would have destroyed us were it not for the bravery of thousands of young Irishmen. Thank you Sean McCarthy for writing the song.
What fucking freedom. It was nothing but handing the irish over to the roman catholic mafia. An even more evil bunch of cunts. The brave lads wasted their lives for this nonsense. Just a different bunch of gangsters at the controls

I was very thrilled to hear this song by Daniel O Donnell’s sister Margo. It’s brings back memories of Sharon Shannon and summer. On hearing the song once again it gives me something to practice playing on my Button Box Accordion as well as my guitars and penny whistle as well as my keyboards and bass guitar

You fought my darling Willie, all through the summer days. I heard the rifles firing in the mountains far away I held you in my arms then, your blood ran clear and bright, And you died in Shanagolden, on a lonely summer's night. Must be one of the most heart-rending descriptions of our heroes who fought to make us free and keep us free. Thanks to all the young brave men who fought for our freedom.
Beautifully sung great voice always remember this song from long go in a bub a gentleman by the. Name of Tom forestell used to sing it,great song thanks Margo
Such an appropriate song this year on the 100th year of the War of Independence. Written by Sean McCarthy from Listowel sung by Margo 0'Donnel from Donegal. Here are the words: The cold winds from the mountains are calling soft to me, The smell of scented heather brings bitter memories: A wild and lonely eagle up in the summer sky, Flies high o'er Shanagolden, where my love Willie lies. I met him in the winter time when snow was on the ground The Irish hills were peaceful and love was all around. Scarcely twenty years old, a young man in his prime. We were married, darling Willie by the eve of Christmas time. Do you remember Willie, we walked the moonlit road I held you in my arms, love, I would never let you go. Our hands they were entwined, my love, all in the pale moonlight, By the fields of Shanagolden on a lonely winter's night. Then came the call to arms, love, the heather was aflame. Down from the silent mountains, the Saxon strangers came. I held you in my arms then, my young heart wild with fear, In the fields by Shanagolden, in the springtime of the year. You fought them, darling Willie, all through the summer days. I heard the rifles firing in the mountains far away I held you in my arms then, your blood ran free and bright, And you died in Shanagolden, on a lonely summer's night. But that was long ago, love, now our son grows fine and tall; The hills they are at peace again: the Saxon strangers gone. There's roses growing on your grave, there's an eagle in the sky , Flying high o'er Shanagolden, where my love Willie lies.
For me this song is about how fighting the oppressor impacts the 'ordinary' people. Who are willing to go out & fight, & die, for their beliefs. The lyrics combine so many lessons within it. Ultimately an anti-war song, in my head, combined with love, & loss, & the heartache of conflict. It's a truly heartbreaking song IMO.
@@johnf4279 And so appropriate too now when we see what is happening in Ukraine, what is being done to a lovely country by a Tyrant. It makes me sick in my stomach to see what a new hitler is doing, murdering innocent people, mothers, sons, daughter, grandmothers too. What an evil bastard he is.
Sadly I didn’t appreciate this beautiful song as a child, but it always makes me remember my mother, when we’d all sit together and sing songs as thee. Margo is seriously underrated with my rebel brothers.
Heard this song this morning on a local radio station. Can't wrap it around my head that the whole song (obviously not the words) sounds just like The Twelfth of Never!!
For my Helena the toughest Irish l knew . U were funny and loving and u d give us all rock all but we loved u Mrs C rest with Dada my favorite lady from Ballyporeen caring for u was my life s honour ur Irene xx
A year later this song still brings tears to my English eyes. It's a love song about experiences of war in my head. IE The victims of conflict, & the situations they had to deal with, don't get heard much. Here, in this song, they do. In a most intimate way. I'd say, just listen. If it doesn't bring a tear to your eye, move on. You not 'getting it'.
It brings back so many great memories, for you have been such a part of my life that I can't really explain. Thank you for your hard work and dedication. Best wishes for yourself, family and friends. 😁😁😁🍀🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟💥🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟💥🙋 By the way you're as beautiful now as the first day I saw you. 💟💟💟
I don't know about that. Her accent is very Donegal definitely North. Shanagolden is southwest Limerick county definitely South. The reason accent is important for me because I am reminded that this song wrote by Mr. McCarthy, Listowel, Co. Kerry was about the 1919-21 war of Independence fought against the Black & Tans, etc. throughout all the island of Ireland.
Margo was one of so few who sang this great song by Sean McCarthy. He from Finuge in North Kerry and Margaret ODonnell, Margo from Donegal. In ways an accidental combining of great talents.
