What is KOReader for ebook readers? -Why I prefer using it on all my e-readers

- In this tutorial I try to explain what KOReader for ebook readers is and why I prefer using it. KOReader runs on almost all Kobo e-readers, Android based e-Readers like the Onyx Boox and Bigme ebook readers, PocketBook e-readers and also on some older Kindle e-readers. I run it on all my e-readers that I use and everything in sync. I use it on my Kobo Clara 2e, Kobo Libra H2O and Onyx Boox Palma. I also has it on my Bigme 751c but I don't use that reader much because it has a color Kaleido 3 screen. I don't like them because they are too dark for reading. You can even install KOReader on a normal Android phone or tablet.

Migrating from Kindle / Calibre and this video was exactly what I needed. Thank you so much!
I’m glad you liked it
Going from Kindle to Calibre or going from both? Of course a main benefit of Koreader is downloading wirelessly from Calibre...
I love KOReader. It’s all I use now. The stats are awesome and the customization with taps and gestures is amazing. How do you set up the syncing feature?
I use the built in progress sync plugin you find in the settings.
@@svartling thanks, I didn’t know I could register on the device and use their server. That’s fantastic!! I always thought we had to have our own server. I set it up to sync between my Libra H2O, Clara, and Pocketbook Touch HD. Works great!!
@kyrilson71 yes it works great. Sometimes their server is down though so I have a few other in reserve.
Thank you for the video, I'm jumping ship from kindle but couldn't find a way to sync personal documents koreader seems perfect for that
Well it only syncs reading progress. Nothing else. Please note.
Very informative videos :)
If I buy a Palma Boox 2, and want to sync my kindle books from other kindle devices then I will have to read them in the kindle app. I cannot open them in the koreader on boox? Am I right? I would like to be able to read them using koreader on my boox
You need to transfer them to KOReader first to be able to read them. Kindle books is drm protected so it need to be removed and converted to epub also.
Thanks for your answer. If i have an epub in my kindle library with the drm removed can I then transfer it to koreader on the palma boox itself?
@limhamnsbtk you mean from the kindle app? No. But from where you have removed drm is probably Calibre and from Calibre you can transfer wirelessly to your Palma.
I've been using the default system on my Kobo libra 2 for a while, but can definitely see the advantages of koreader! Is it possible to transfer my reading progress, highlights, and notes when I move to koreader (as a one time process)?
Sorry it's no possible to do that. At least not what I know of
Good demo and interesting software, i can see the use. I'm in amazon kindle ecosystem so cannot utilise it at present.
Ok no KOReader can only be installed on older kindle devices.
@svartling I've just pre ordered the boox go 10.3 and am revisiting KOreader as an option, does it work with handwritten annotations to make use of the stylus and screen tech ?
Koreader is not optimized for stylus use. I don't recommend it for that.
Actually, I think Immersive Translate is also useful in translating or reading Epub books and PDFs.
Oh interesting, I didn't know about the battery statistics! Out of curiosity, what are the total amount of hours you can get on the Kobo Libra and the Onyx Boox Palma compared to the Clara?
12 hours on the Libra and around 10 hours on the Boox Palma
My Clara 2e last for 40-50 reading hours when I set brightness to 15%. It would probably last 55-60 hours with brightness set to 0%. 9 hours reading time seems so low. Do you think it's because of KOReader? I want to install it but battery life is more important for me.
Yes probably because of KOReader. Even that I don’t believe you get 40-50 reading hours though. But you get a lot more with normal kobo software.
Thank you for the vide, awesome as always!
Thank you for your kind words
Immediately a fan! Thank you so much for showing what it can do. Does it sync highlights/annotations? For example when I read in EPUB and highlights a line.
Also, I guess syncing from iPhone is not possible…?
KOReader is not available for iPhone. Only Android. And no it can only sync reading progress. You can save highlights and notes though.
Does Koreader come with ability to look up words in dictionary, or Wikipedia? Thanks I am considering installing on my 3 devices to keep my reading synched. I did not know it did that until your video. I have a Kobo, Kindle and Pocketbook.
Yes i have a whole video about dictionaries. Much better than the original ui. Koreader works great on Kobo and pocketbook but Kindle its harder to install. You need an old Kindle that doesnt run the latest firmwares.
@@svartling I will watch in order to install on the Pocketbook and Kobo plus the dictionaries as well. Thank you, your videos are so helpful.
@richardspitz3192 you’re welcome
Does KOReader integrate with Calibre? I have a Calibre library on my PC and because of this I am leaning towards Kobo rather than Kindle, looking at the BW at present. EDIT: Just seen this from 10mins - great, thanks!
Yes KOReader and Calibre works perfectly fine together. Totally wireless. I have plenty of videos showing how on my channel.
The only issue i see is say you have 40 books in your kobo library, you got to add these 40 books to koreader, so not only dublicatung your books, butvtajing up 2x the memory of the device
Yes that could be a problem if you want to use both systems. Normal Kobo and koreader. Personally I decided to only use koreader. So no duplicates
@svartling pity you could not flash the kobo reader to only have ko reader abd wipe the kobo interface As its still there taking up valuable memory. So not using the kobo interface is like having bloatware on your device. Wastes memory you cannot use, but taken up by an interface your not needing or use
Yeah but 16GB is more than enough for me so I don’t see that as a problem. KOReader didn’t take up much space.
does this improve the speed of my Kobo to read?, it is an old model (Kobo Aura ONE)
I answered your other comment. When reading normal epub ebooks yes but probably not your cbr files.
Hello there,
Do you use the screen protector with you your e-readers? Or is this going to reduce the clarity of the screen and makes outside light reflected on the screen? What do you think?
Thank you, for your videos
No I don’t use screen protectors and I don’t think you should either. As you said the display will then not be as crisp. And it’s quite unnecessary on an e-reader because the displays as plastic and not glass usually.
Great to see this. Thank you! Do any of your videos cover how the vocabulary builder in koreader works?
Not yet no.
Hi Stefan, great video. I would like to ask you something, is there a video tutorial on your channel that explains how to set up synchronization with KOReader on various devices? If there isn't, will you ever do it? Thank you
If you mean syncing of reading progress, I have shown that briefly in a few videos already but I am planning on do a video that mainly shows how to do that.
This video shows how at the end: ruclips.net/video/BxRRHRWQKz4/видео.htmlsi=SWr7RqBItff6mL5l
@@svartling Thanks so much, I'll watch the video you linked while waiting for the full video! Thanks again
I have an Inkpalm 5 pro and i am wondering how KOreader would work on it.
Really good. Because you can customize everything. Margins, line heights, everything. Works great on my onyx Boox Palma because of that
Is this book only in Swedish? Tried looking on my kindle app. It looked interesting from what little I could translate from Swedish, to danish, to English in my mind.
Yes what I know of its only available in Swedish
Hi Stefan, it’s been a while that I have some questions about koreader. I have hesitated to ask but now I really have to:
If I want to install nickelclock, do I have to install koreader first?
By installing KOReader you get nickel menu automatically. There is other way to install nickel menu without KOReader but I have never tried that.
Kobo customer service told me that reading progresa on kobo app,on iPhone, and on kobo device are in sync, even for the sideloaded epub. Is that true?
No it’s not true. Only for books bought in kobo store
Question on koreader , how do you make a research (a book a title an author ) ? It is not so easy
Do you mean searching for a book in the KOReader library?
Yes, in my library
@Strravigor when you are in the library just choose the search icon from top menu and choose file search
@@svartling merci !
@@svartling so simple ! Merci
Can you create Collection or group books by genre on Kindle? And is the web browser usable after the jailbreak?
Are you talking about in KOReader? KOReader uses a file manager where you can create folders for your books.
@@svartling thank you
Thanks ! how do you make the system open your reading page when you open koreader ?
Do you mean on onyx Boox Palma or on kobo?
@@svartling I am on an Inkpad 4 .Is it linked to the device or to a preference preset in Korerader ?
@Strravigor no I just have the book open in KOReader and then click home to go to the home screen on android. Then when I click KOReader it opens where I left off because the app is already in the background
Hello, can you tell me please, if i do a factory reset to a Kobo, will it clean everything from nickel menu and koreader, no files left? I've installed koreader, and i didn't like it. So i did a factory reset. It's gone, but i want to be sure that there is nothing left, and the os files are untouched
Well both yes and no. The files are restored but the warranty is broken. Kobo will still be able to see that you have installed KOReader on it. But you will personally not notice a difference afterwards.
@@svartling I'm not concerned about the warranty, i only want to have the os untouched
@mephisto86yt it is.
@@svartling thank you!
Hi, will my reading progress in KOreader sync with Kobo?
No. Only in KOReader.
I installed koreader but then i suddenly had over 140 books in my kobo library and i was unable to remove them so i did a factory reset of my device, perhaps a bug but i only want my books listed in my books?
As I said in this video. The books are independent of each other so you can’t have the books in the same folder. KOReader needs to have the books in its own folder. So create a folder in the KOReader folder. Then put books there.
Yes , but i ment the original kobo launcher my books folder/shelf was a complete mess with a lot of books that wasn’t mine with over 140 thumbnails of different files that read said it was books
Ok and you haven’t used the same folder in KOReader then? It sounds like the original ui library and the KOReader library got mixed somehow.
@jonasamna KOReader uses a cache folder where it stores thumbnails of the book covers. They show up as books in the normal ui if you have chosen the wrong folder. You see them with your normal books then.
@@svartling i never had to have a special folder for koreader, one of the good thing with koreader is that you see the hierarchy of your folders and can navigate into it ! What Kobo UI don’t
Does koreader work with kobo libra color too?
Yes but not with the pen.
is this available for ios also?
or is there better alternative use on ipad?
No KOReader is not available for iOS or iPadOS unfortunatley. ANd to be honest video, there is no better than KOReader. The next best thing is PocketBook Reader that you can see video about on my channel. It can sync between iphone, ipad, Android, android based eReaders and Pocketbook ereaders.
@svartling thank you so much. Is will definitely check your video
You're welcome
how can i install KO-Reader on Inkpad 4 ?
It is better than the default app in terms of functionality and initial loading lag ?
Go to t KOReader GitHub page in your web browser and download the apk. Then install it. Yes for reading is much better. But inkpad is also a note taking device.
Can you install it on a PC?
Koreader? I dont think so. But check their Github page. But if you can run Android apps you can run it
Thank you
You’re welcome
you sure about your margin settings Stefan? They are awful - there's a reason margins exist - words need to breathe!
Yes but I like my margins when reading and I read a lot 53 books so far this year so it works for me
I agree, but its his preference. He uses very large fonts so he can fit more
bra video
