    if the cape were that big and it had the shape of a bats wings that would look awesome and would probably be terrifying to criminals because the proportion of his wings to his body would look like a bats proportions.

      I'm sure he'd make it light enough for it not to do that. He may make it super flexible so when he's not flying it's not quite that long and it extends to its full length in flight.

      Thereon Inarek I'd say the way it was depicted in Batman Returns would be the way to go, which is basically support bars that can be activated seperately, making it stiff enough to not fold, basically converting into a hang glider and back at will.

    Fun fact, in his comics Batman is occasionally drawn with his cape appearing MUCH much larger and longer (and often quite ragged at the same time), to the point where, to me, it kinda resembles the size he'd need to ACTUALLY glide the way he does.

    Lack of Speed to enter gliding can be explained, or the issue can be somewhat alleviated.
    There are oft seen 2 ways he enters his glide-mode, 1 is to do a dead-drop from a building top, quickly entering Terminal Velocity before unfurling his cape.
    The other method is a combination of the former and the use of his grappling hook to drag himself forward at high speeds, significantly raising his velocity.
    Naturally, these methods entail their own sets of befuddling equations and problems, such as how strong is the tensile strength of his cape, and how durable is Batman himself to keep holding on the to severe power of his own grappling hooks without his arms flying off or his shoulder popping from it's socket...
    But that's all just minor details :D

  • @JamesBrown-il2cg
    @JamesBrown-il2cg 8 лет назад +5

    You can also add in his actually velocity. which would be much higher than 9 m/s. People can reach a terminal velocity of 480,000 m/s in a 2 km fall with steam lined aerodynamics. His velocity at the end of a streamlined fall of 10-15 stories would be much greater than your running speed. This would generate additional lift allowing him to glide farther. I'm not certain how his arms don't break though. Go hold a 4'x8' piece of plywood in a stout 40 mph wind and you will understand.

  • @irvingvalle1
    @irvingvalle1 9 лет назад +2

    Maybe if there was a material strong and light enough that he could make a big cape out of and fold it in half when he's walking around so it doesn't drag on the ground and when he jumps off a building he could release his cape to extend and allow him to glide.

  • @jebustchrist4054

    If your cape size is based on a 95kg male, then I think you have understated a bit! At 6'2" I weigh 100kg and have nowhere near the amount of muscle that Batman carries physically and that's without taking into consideration the suit and cowl (both kevlar lined) and of course the belt (which is a bit of a Mary Poppins bag of tricks really).
    Love the vids

    If his cape were to be made of something with a ridged structure, perhaps like the skin of a golf ball, that provides more surface area by volume could the size of the cape be reduced?

  • @thomashowarth2638
    @thomashowarth2638 9 лет назад +1

    Theres a Nightmare Batman Skin for Arkham Knight which is modled after the knightfall end cutscene and the cape is about that size, its badass, so even if Batman used theat cape he'd still be totally baller

    Potentially related question. How would a wingsuit be able to work without the airfoil between the legs, if at all?

  • @marcopohl4875
    @marcopohl4875 7 лет назад +1

    i know i'm late on this one, so i probably won't get an awnser, but i can still hope:
    a) how do wing-suits work then?
    b) what if the batsuit had a surface similar to a high-tech swimsuit, to reduce drag?

  • @learntochill
    @learntochill 6 лет назад +1

    I know it's late, but wouldn't you rather equollate Batman's flight to that of a...flying squirrel? Seeing as they both jump and glide. Where as the bat can actually generate it's own flight

  • @MtnNerd
    @MtnNerd 9 лет назад +1

    Would like to see an estimate on his actual glide ratio in game. It would be simple to estimate the height of a building and the maximum distance from said building once he glides down from it. From that see if the numbers are realistic to real world materials and what you would need to change to make it actually work.

  • @theta682pl

    his arms CAN be used as an aerofoil if the cape is clipped properly but the centre of mass to centre of lift would cause him to stall and break his neck upon impact

    I wonder how much the batsuit with a cape that huge would weigh, and how that would screw with these equations..

  • @Netherwolf6100
    @Netherwolf6100 7 лет назад +1

    Hmmm well in the games he seems to fall pretty fast, at least to me. Maybe that might be apart of it. It doesn't seem like the batcape is designed for long gliding, just from one quick roof top to the next if need be.

    • @Maesolmese
      @Maesolmese 9 лет назад +2

      wesley ayyye ;) Not quite. The cape, in order to make it functional/practical, cannot be longer than his nape to ankle measurement, as he would constantly be tripping over it and hindering any cool fight scenes. This means that the cape he wears when he is standing is not an accurate representation of the one he "wears" while gliding. This is know as movie magic. In "flight" his "wingspan" is probably twice his height (I referenced the movies to be sure). Supposedly, the fabric stiffens due to an electric current, right? No fabric (currently available, to my knowledge) can both expand to twice its size while stiffing ("molecules realigning", as Fox puts it in Batman Begins) to the point it could support body weight, while being lightweight AND durable enough to put up with all the shit Bruc- I'm sorry- Batman would put it through :/

  • @minecraftace123
    @minecraftace123 8 лет назад +1

    In one comic explaination, he uses electrostatic gloves to send a pulse through his cape to make it stiff and stay in that position till it is charged again. Could this actually work, and if so, has anyone done it yet?

    what if the cape is built not from a single sheet of fabric or whatever the material it's built, but the material actually have two or more stacked sheets, with small separation between, filled with some hollow tubes of the same material all the way down; whouldn't that double o make it have more surface on the same size than a cape build from simple fabric?

    • @Gorgonzeye
      @Gorgonzeye 8 лет назад

      +Antonio Carranza Lift results from air passing over the top of a wing, such as the cape, faster than it passes over it. However, the wind on top of the bottom layer would be the same wind bellow layer two. Most likely the other layers wouldn't be able to contribute lift.
