    Good advice here as I am finally starting an at home detailing business. I remember being mocked for saying you need $10,000 to start a detailing business. I still say you need six months this of SEO to begin to break even. If you’re renting shop space then you need more money upfront.
    Economically we are mirroring the Great Depression as M2 money supply went negative this year for the first time since 1927. The banks are insolvent because they lost all of their money in the inverted bond market. This time next year things will be different but there will be opportunity! Customers may option for a professional ceramic coating versus PPF!

    sorry long post alert lol . I guess the financial climate has its affect but I imagine its quite seasonal and psychological for customers too, Spring / Summer people feel good and positive like things to look nice and know it will stay that way for longer, then Autumn hits like September work and school schedules are full on and then the Holidays like Thanks giving (for US) and Christmas cost , then Winter and people daily driver customers will always full short of seeing the value in cleaning the car, maybe they are frightened buy the high end sales on PPF or Full on Ceramic coating, maybe sell some maintenance packages through winter that look cost affective which include lesser spray coatings or sealants to maintain the bead affect and feels more special and personal than the drive by car wash, something like a monthly clean x 3 for a package figure and maybe from this they'll see the value in say a 12 month ceramic coating and an up sale ring into spring. Or this could create a monthly subscription maintenance service and have a couple of guys dedicated to this service, maybe you already do i'm just typing out load. great content guys thanks

    Tint is the bee’s knee of the whole industry, not many people do it, jobs are quick & also pretty high ticket

    Ive been in business since 2017 only having a Facebook site and word of mouth. I currently have a website built, but have not launched it or google verified my shop yet. I was thinking of waiting until January of 2024 just to simplify paperwork. Winter in New Hampshire is absolutely brutal for detailing, but im determined to make this my sole income source! Thanks for posting some valuable info!

    I say offer detailing alongside some other gimmick like tints, ppf, or wraps and you can upcharge with stuff like ceramic coatings and cleaning.

    I feel that customer sentiment has shifted, folks see their vehicles as disposable and don't see the point in spending hundreds or thousand in correcting minor aesthetic issues. Those that are that picky are usually older men with egos that make them terrible customers to work with.

    Interesting that a core service is tinting but all the money or profit lies in the need of a fixed location. Not a real surprise but does make long term plans or goals to grow your business

    We are operating from Singapore, southeast asia so the hot and cold season is a bit different, but yes I agree.

    After 40 years in this industry and during that time I have seen the worst of detailers come out of the woodworks and they are hurting this industry. Let's face it ceramic coatings are not services people believe they need, as much as something they want, so proper education is a huge key in what drives this industry. You could have 25 shady detailers who don't know much running around doing shoddy work and that will hurt the five good ones that are in that area. For me my cost acquisition is a little high because of the knowledge I have to put out in the community, I believe it's worth every penny as this industry has gotten flooded with a lot of BS products and deception on the supply side and the physical detailing business side. Letting people know that high end detailing and ceramic coatings are not something they just want, but instead they need to be educated as something they need and why those services will save them money in the long run and protect their investment. I could go on for another 10 paragraphs or what's wrong with this industry and what we can all do as high end detailers and honest detailers could do to make sure this industry stays legitimate and honest.

      I agree with you. In my area which is New Jersey they are all these pop-up detailers coming out of the Woodworks and a lot of them with no knowledge or any business insurance and they are charging $125 to do paint correction and $185 to do ceramic coating and unfortunately it's hurting my business on top of the new competition that is entered my area. Plus the combination of people spending less money and Google just taking more and more money out of good detail of pockets and still not bringing enough customers. I don't think my business will be able to see another year. It's not just this industry but other Industries as well where everybody's deciding to open up some type of cleaning or detailing business and when the glass is full, it's going to overflow and there won't be any money to be made in a crowded Market.

    Lots of artificial money going around in '20-'22. As it dries up, so will many businesses that haven't saved for a rainy day (or year).
