Funny how lots of people still don't realize WaW is a part of the black ops series and are surprised when they find out Reznov first appeared in it LOL
@@Sketchy_2 It's why I consider it part of the series more than Black Ops 3. WaW has Reznov's entire backstory, while BO3 just has a single line of dialogue referencing BO2.
@@cytorakdemon I was so fucking annoyed by the BO3 campaign. I got the game because the extra mobility looked neat and it was part of the BO franchise. I had heard the story is amazing in the series, and thought I'd jump in from BO3.
Like many psychological mystery movies that needs a few rewatch, Black Ops is the only one that made me restart the whole champagne right after I finish it.
Another thing to add. In the ending scene about JFK, one of the numbers we hear is 6.5. This is significant because the bullet that shot JFK was the 6.5x52mm Carcano.
Another cool thing in the menu that you didn't mention, when you switch to the zombies mode the interrogators are replaced by zombies trying to break through the glass.
No, no, no, I believe Reznov and Mason were like brothers. Reznov cared for Mason and saw him as the only one capable of killing Dragovich. Reznov did not USE Mason; there was simply no other way. Besides, Reznov did the US a favor (or perhaps not, we will never know for sure) by wiping off Dragovich's program for Mason.
I think the best moment in this game is the look on Steiner's face when Mason impersonates Reznov. It was like in that moment it all clicked and he put it all together. Why Mason was there, why he was saying that. He put two and two together and made sense of why their attempt at MK Ultra went wrong and that Reznov had manipulated the brainwashing for himself. And it was perfect.
@rabid that's fine idc much about improving much I just wanna play it on current gen bcoz I don't have old gen anymore, if they could do it with mafia and MW2 I'm pretty sure they can with atleast bo2 if not bo1
2:07 I definately feel this, I felt the same about zombies when it was more linked to the real life Nazi occultism and secret projects, I hope CW lives up to the first game.
I feel you on the Zombies. That's why I was SO heavily invested in playing it. Years of my life. It actually got me researching all about the crazy experiments the Germans and Russians did during that time. And all the conspiracy theories. It was so interesting! It was so disappointing when Origins came out and when they started going too crazy with the story. I gave up in it completely. Lost interest and never got BO3 til recently, and hated it. I did end up trying BO4 zombies and was so surprised. The Chaos story gave me this same feeling about zombies again, got me researching different mythologies around the world, which I never had an interest in. Yet everyone hated on it, and now will likely never be finished. And now I have no reason to buy a Call of Duty ever again.
The fact that we can clearly see Mason in REAL footage just before JFK's assassination just shows how great and how creative the writers are, and it shows that they can make a really epic and deep story that ties into real life.
1:44 "they betrayed and ruthlessly murdered their own soldiers, including one of Reznov's dear friends." ... Also, fun fact, one of the protagonists of World at War who you play as on the Russian's side. If you played the previous game, you not only felt bad because "poor Reznov", you where right there to watch the two take on the Nazi forces all the way from their lowest point, hiding amongst the dead bodies in a fountain in Stalingrad, right up until the two of them, wounded and bloodied, raised the soviet flat above the Reichstag. ... And then you watch these three jackasses throw your old character into a room to die horrifically, choking on a bio-weapon that basically liquifies the respiratory system, for the sake of an experiment, and throw Reznov into a gulag to suffer for kicks. ... Needless to say, "Dragovich... Kravchenko... Steiner... These three must die!" rung pretty darn hard in me at the time lol Oh... Right, and if you think Black Ops had gore... Oh boy, it's prequel was something else
A forming memory of my first playthrough of blackops is taking an m60 on a the level where your repelling the attack on the airfield and moving out of cover while crouching and holding down the trigger while a dude rushed me, and his entire groin was removed
World at War had the most gore in the franchise and I agree there. Like the detail was insane in campaign and it was even more detailed in multiplayer with the inclusion of "Bouncing Betties". Those Traps tore off entire legs, pieces of flesh, etc.
Fast fact: BO1&2 stories are written by David S. Goyer who wrote Nolan's Batman trilogy. I like how BO blended the hollywood action with crazy cold war conspiracies and real events but sometime I felt that the story was out of place a little bit (maybe I read too much history) and a lot of futuristic weapons in 1960s setting was very jarring for me. I personally think Treyarch got better at storytelling and gameplay in BO2 like failable and secret objectives that effect main story, semi-non linear missions and memorable characters.
The plot twist is really well foreshadowed, everytime Reznov conviniently appears the numbers play, which gives him a really sinister vibe and let's you know his appearances aren't as convinirnt as you thought Or hudson saying the same line as the interrogator : "give us what we want and we'll garantee your safety"
For a long time I thought I was kind of in the minority for liking Black Ops best, but more recently everybody seems to be expressing similar feelings for it. Great to see! It's as flawless a package as CoD ever got.
Looking behind the scenes, because they had to ship it in a year, we basically got half of what the directors wanted to make. Sane with basically every cod game.
2:34 best aircraft ever made the SR-71 Blackbird a Supersonic stealth recconasance spy plane and it is My second Favorite aircraft. Idk why I did this I just wanted to point out look hey it's a Blackbird
Black Ops 1 encouraged me to research about history, namely the Cold War. In year 9 of secondary school I was learning about the Vietnam War with my class and a lot of real-world elements from that war reminded me of the campaign missions (Khe Sanh, The TET Offensive - even the Bay of Pigs invasion, Cuban Missile Crisis & the Space Race). The TVs in the main menu/interrogation room playing back historical archived footage makes me feel like I’m making the history that’s already been written. Whether it’s boots-on-the-ground combat or on-the-rails vehicle segments, the action never gets boring as you feel like you’re shaping history as we know it. Hearing the songs “Fortunate Son” in the beginning and end of “S.O.G” & “Sympathy for the devil” during “Crash Site” in the background felt kickass! If that isn’t enough, hearing the soundtrack “Blood and Iron” from COD WAW play in the mission “Project Nova” was a fantastic callback to that game, as well as following WAW’s Russian protagonist (Dimitri Petrenko) whilst playing as Reznov (who you followed and fought alongside as Petrenko). It’s such a shame these two characters perished under unfortunate circumstances. The story, action and characters in it keep me engaged constantly. Mason (to me) is an intelligent and resilient character, always thinking on his feet and putting himself first in the most dire situations (solving the numbers’ broadcast nearing the story’s climax, after constant torture and mental torment, carries out JFK’s request to kill Dragovich) His frustration about the numbers throughout his captivity extended to me, as I was as clueless as he is and wanted to know what exactly his captors wanted. I wasn’t able to understand the plot until I replayed the last missions “Rebirth”, “Revelations” and “Redemption”. The twist of Reznov being a figment in Mason’s mind after his escape from Vorkuta is both staggering and emotional. I love how everything eventually comes full-circle in “Revelations”, which I always thought was a ‘walking simulator’ and a time waster. I love how each set piece are flashbacks to Mason’s past (his brainwashing process in Vorkuta, meeting with/failing to assassinate JFK, seeing the Soyuz rocket take off - which in reality he successfully sabotaged). I’ll never forget how much I became interested in history after playing this game and doing my school homework. Unlike the current COD games, this is one of the few that paints a gritty picture of war and make you feel like you’re really in the thick of it. No super-advanced technology or a mediocre story (cough cough, BO3). Thank you for making this video 👏🏽
Reznov’s dear friend was the playable character on the Russian side of the world at war campaign, which I thought added so much depth to reznovs motivations
My man you are the only RUclipsr I’m subscribed to who I watch every video you upload instantly and I’m never disappointed, congrats and keep up the good work my dude!
Black ops is one of my favoritr COD’s, loved the story. The Resnov reveal had me reeling until you find out you probably shot JFK. Mind blowing! Great vid, Robin!
I don’t know if anyone will see this but, this is sort of depressing for me. I had an accident occur to me that’s scarred my well being ever since, one of the many things it did to me. Was causing me to forget almost all of my childhood. Except the bad parts. Bits and pieces of playing black ops with my childhood friends is about all I can ever remember of them. And while knowing this game was a part of my childhood, I’ll never be able to remember it. Edit/ point of comment. Always be grateful for what you have, even if it’s just memories. My family is wealthy, but the only thing I want most in this world are my memories, because the only ones I can remember are the bad ones.
I love the way he edited the video and how he actually respects the style of the game, For me cod games are the actual games that Taught me history and other important things I have to never forget in life
@A Bloke hey the IW campaign was great and i got to agree with comment above, you’re part of the minority that only buys for single player not the “many”
Thats a really great video robin. In my opinion Black Ops 2 presented a really interesting sequel and story that is as good as Black ops story. They tried a new approach by having multiple endings depending on your actions but I think they actually did it great. The way of doing missions in the past and missions in the future and how they connect them together is awesome in my opinion and the storytelling was great. The endings depends on some crucial actions you take through the campaign, and if i remember correctly i think even there was optional missions or mission that make the story change if you actually did them. And the characters were great. In addition for the original characters we have new people in the future like Mason's son and a villain that is present in both timelines: Raul Menendez. Also the soundtracks are good and i remember them until this day. I suggest you give BO2 a try and see what you think of it now :) :)
It really bothers me that infinite warfare didn’t have choices like black ops 2, I mean infinite warfare is about being captain of a fleet and captains make choices, HOW DID THEY NOT DO THAT!!??
God, you just made me wanna play black ops 1 now! Seeing all this footage brings a feeling of nostalgia down my spine.. miss those days! Great vid btw as always
That's crazy I was just watching a mission from BO1 and you upload this video lmao. I didn't realized back then, but man I miss those old COD 10 years later :(
@@miles6256 ok let's be honest the only good thing in that game was zombies. I mean, zombies was in the top 3 in the entire series (up there with B02 and CW for me) but everything else is straight fortnite quality
Black ops is for me the best overall CoD ever released and in terms of storytelling quality only Black ops 2 comes close to it. Black ops 2 might actually have even better campaign thanks to the decisions you make, two periods the story takes places in and probably best villain in CoD history. Althought Black ops 2 was the last CoD game I bought, I am very excited for Cold War´s (atleast) campaign and wonder if they can bring back the quality of black ops storytelling.
BO2 was when everything peaked by then. MW3 had released a year prior and wrapped up that Trilogy. I held on afterwards with Ghosts and Advanced Warfare and you didn't miss much. I got Cold War thinking I could recapture old times and I was wrong. What a waste of money. I thought that maybe I was older and that was the issue, but no. I went back recently and got Platinum in World At War and Black Ops 1. Still masterpieces. Won't be buying another COD game unless it is a remake of the classic Treyarch games, W@W, BO1, and BO2
Never have I felt truly horrible from a videogame, except when Dmitri Petrenko died the way he did. I had played WaW’s singleplayer over and over and over. When this happened... damn
14:05 correction, James C. Burns, the voice actor for woods, said many months before the game came out that woods survived and there would be a prize for those who guessed correctly before the release of the game.
17:10 when they had lee harvey oswald being arrested on a monitor and mason mentioning oswalds capture during an early scene, it made the "tried" to shoot the president line way harder
The saddest thing is that not a lot of people know about the ARG that took place before the reveal of the game. Absolutely masterfully crafted. Treyarch tried to replicate it with "pawn takes pawn" ARG, but kn my opinion it doesnt come close to GKNOVA6.
@4:36 when the girl is reading off the numbers, there is a book on the counter called Profiles in Courage by JFK. It won a Pulitzer Prize. Love those little details.
the mission "revelations" mason also confirms/hints that you killed jfk. mason has some lines like "oswald, compromised!" and a few other nods to details from the real world event.
I know its late but after all the games we had black ops is still a standout. On replaying it you can notice key things. For example when I replayed it I noticed no other characters ever interact with Reznov out of Mason's team. Which is an early hint that he was never there in the first place. The idea of the story missions being the retelling of a brainwashed man was unique. Even the fact he is positive it happened exactly as he says. You even at one point hear the interrogators emphasise the words "no one else made it out" in frustration at Mason who as adamant Reznov was with him. I always loved the combat training especially the fact the bots can take names from your friend list
I loved BLOPS1 overall. The story was engaging and repayable. I loved the Black Bird Mission and then going into multiplayer and using that same plane as a killstreak to light up the enemy team and them was nothing they could do to counter. I was like, well you should have killed me, now I know your position. The cod points was a great system to unlock the best gear right away. The music was bone chilling and something I love to listen to. I remember playing the story mode at least 2nor 3 times to pick up on those mind blowing moments and also experiment with how the games story would be if I changed how I acted
Because they hired someone who knew how to write I.e. the dude who did Dark Knight for the 1st one. I think the 1st one is still the best when it comes to story.
I’d love to hear more time period specific music in CoD CW. Really hoping to hear some classic metal like Black Sabbath or maybe if we’re really lucky some lesser known stuff like Diamond Head.
I've always loved those cutscenes when you could look around and where still in first person Also those cool scenes where your playing and the npcs fight
Playing World at War, a gritty call back to the roots, how limbs blew off, the amazing portrayal of those fronts, then going into the spy thriller style of Black Ops, amazing times. I still love both, but growing up with Big Red One, World at War was my favorite.
1:54 The second I heard the first note I got chills😭 I love the first black ops game so much and nothing will ever be better to me unless of course they remastered it
Great video again robin , cod used to be so great back in the day. I remember being blown away by Black Ops's campaign... It ended up being so iconic and I never really understood why they never attempted anything like that again. Playing the BOCW beta just makes me miss these old games, it's pretty terrible imo Also, this is where I became a huge fan of zombies, which i ended up loving until BO3.. after that it sucked
The style and sound design of this game is easily the best in the series. It felt so real and gritty, as well as impactful. So immersive and atmospheric
I think the part of the story that holds up the worst is how you spend so much time having to slowly follow someone, both in walking segments and in combat. Really kills the pacing.

Another thing to add. In the ending scene about JFK, one of the numbers we hear is 6.5. This is significant because the bullet that shot JFK was the 6.5x52mm Carcano.
1 yr old comment but god damn this game is just amazing the details, the story everything
Man I wonder what those number stations mean in real life.
Another cool thing in the menu that you didn't mention, when you switch to the zombies mode the interrogators are replaced by zombies trying to break through the glass.
Knowing Reznov’s plans, it seems like his relationship between Alex was less genuine.
Sort of the point. You kind of realise he was just using you as a means to an end.
@warystatue33 I think its BECAUSE of the brainwashing that Mason still veiws Reznov as a freind.
@warystatue33 didn't Woods call Reznov a "Tricky Vic"?
@warystatue33 oh, yeah... That's weird. I guess that was Mandela effect
This is a crazy detail I’d never noticed🙌

If you played the previous game, you not only felt bad because "poor Reznov", you where right there to watch the two take on the Nazi forces all the way from their lowest point, hiding amongst the dead bodies in a fountain in Stalingrad, right up until the two of them, wounded and bloodied, raised the soviet flat above the Reichstag.
... And then you watch these three jackasses throw your old character into a room to die horrifically, choking on a bio-weapon that basically liquifies the respiratory system, for the sake of an experiment, and throw Reznov into a gulag to suffer for kicks.

This is why it's still my favorite campaign in the series and I really don't think it got the credit it deserved
The plot twist is really well foreshadowed, everytime Reznov conviniently appears the numbers play, which gives him a really sinister vibe and let's you know his appearances aren't as convinirnt as you thought
