Yup, it's pretty sad when you go out and purchase an HD touring bike with an MSRP of $25-30K and have to upgrade everything to what it should have had to start with, one of them being rear shocks. It's a $25K touring bike! Why aren't the good shocks on there to start with? I had an '83 Yamaha Venture that rode way smoother and handled much better than my 2016 Electra Glide. The real absurdity is the allowable crank runout on the twin cams. Cranks should - and do in any other application - have ZERO runout. Again, companies like S&S and Dark Horse are doing what HD should have done if they're going to ask that kind of money. I replaced lots of internal parts on my SE 110 CI engine on my 2012 CVO Street Glide FLHXSE3 that I bought new in Aug 2011. I replaced the cam support plate with a better Feuling one, the oil pump with a high flow Feuling one, the rocker supports with forged ones, the pushrods with Feuling ones, the crappy cam bearings Harley used in those years with better full complement ones that won't fall apart, the too-thick .060" composite head gaskets wirh .030" three-part metal Cometic ones, and some other things. My crank runout is around .005", so I got lucky on the crankshaft. The SE heads have good valve springs that keep the pushrods seated on the .579" lift SE-259e cams I run. I also have a Drago's Dragula 2-into-1 race pipe and a really good custom TTS tune in the bike. I run the Hayden primary chain tensioner, and it keeps the primary chain tension right and doesn't get too tight like the crappy Harley ratcheting tensioner does. I coincidentally checked it today when I was installing the second Energy One extra clutch plate kit with a 15% stronger-than-stock clutch spring. The stock Harley clutch plates and spring slip a LOT with my engine 's power, but the Energy One extra plate kit and spring have never slipped since I installed the first one during the bike's first year. Hi 👋, sorry it was 2000 , I have just purchased a 2003 deuce, it is in a very bad condition, I have just replaced the main belt drive and sprocket, and Jim’s upgrade inner bearing on output shaft, new coil and leads , and rebuild the HSR42 carb twice all new jets, And I have found that it has been cam S&S G510 , not sure if it was 88 or 95 I will find out over the winter months, France.
I just went through my 2011 FLHX this year redid the entire cam chest with all S&S components 551c cams. New exhaust fuel moto headers, front progressive mono tubes. Inner primary seal leaked so I replaced that along with all the transmission seals on that side and a new Barnett clutch. I service the bike per the manual and change all my fluids every 3k miles. Also three on new brakes and tires bike runs like new. I do almost all my own work on it so I know it’s done right and saves me tons of cash.
I have an 02 Electra Glide with Stage 1 & 2. I upgraded the cam chest with Fueling components including high capacity oil pump, and S&S 510 cams. No cam issues going forward and the Harley will never leave my possession, however I bought an 08 GL-1800 to crush the long distance miles.
You will want the Harley factory service manual. You'll want to check wheel geometry and alignment with magnetic digital levels. Harley brake pads are expensive and have zero bite. Dyna/sportster rear caliper is incompatible with EBC FA200HH unless you take around 1mm out of the radius for the outside edge of the inner pad. Could shade tree it with a chainsaw file but a rotary tool ¼" sanding drum works best. My '99 FXDL stops, goes and handles like a sportster on steroids but it's a lot of work to keep ontop of. There's always something next and the while you're in there you'll want to replace everything. Engine and trans is an oil redistribution assembly. My '95 Evo FXDL never leaked but the lifters still failed at 25k. My '88 sportster wheel bearings failed at 12k and the tank range I couldn't live with. Not going to EFi or anything built after 2000.
Never ending service and maintenance, cam tensioners, pressed crankshaft.....love the 2012 103.c.i. wide glide.....will be selling it and going with alternative choices....sad to do it
My twin cam is 19 years old and runs like a champ twin cams don't break for the hell of it usually the owner breaks them not doing maintenance doing stupid s***
with all the upgrades my 2012 RG needs I think I should just buy a s&s motor and be done with it! Hey S&S you should start building Motorcycles put HD right outta business 😂😂
If you purchase a Flo reusable oil filter for around: $120 you can see everything the magnetic pre filter and stainless screen catches when you change your oil and clean the filter. This imo is the best way to catch a problem early.. These type filters are used in aviation and have significant advantages over unknown quality paper filters. They pay for themselves and will last way longer than your bike. My 2012 SG with 50k is on it's 15th oil change so my Flo filter has more than paid for itself while providing cleaner, cooler oil to my 103.

Bingo. 11:30 charging system battery, stator, rotor, regulator. The straw that broke this camel's back. Only 2 years after getting the S&S gear driven cams and the 2000 FXDX had been running like a BOOH. Thought about trading in for a new dyna but it was 2019. Got a KTM SAS w/ about 3K miles on it. I guess the dyna only sounded bad ass. May still try the recommended stator/ rotor solution someday. Thanks for the information.
This seems like a good video. Unfortunately, many times in here I can't hear what you're saying due to the music being too loud to hear you. Do you ave this without that music in foreground? Also, I have a 2006 Electraglide UltraClassic. I have NEVER had an issue with it. Not even a drop of oil has leaked. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. I've done. years ago, all the maintenance and required upgrades. Chain tensioner, Hydraulic Spring Tensioner, Oil pump, biggest cam I could put in it, added a Hayes 5th gear sprocket( it's like a poor man's overdrive) and that dropped my RPM's from 3000 to 2500 when cruising 60-80. Replaced Cruise Control Cable, Added Fuel Pak, put in a Lithium Battery 7years ago and still running on that without an issue. Love my bike and it looks like a show bike to this day.

I can advice them to give up that arrogant attitude and ask help in Japan or Germany... like they did before with the V Rod.
If your 2011 or newer Twin Cam has been regularly serviced with a premium 20 w 50 synthetic oil and quality filter, and has not been abused, just ride that thang. Find other chit to be concerned about. Life's too short.

i sold parts alone for 3 years if you don't want to spend double the money on parts let alone cost of labor on a bike a sportster is the best option to get in and get out without losing money on harley if u keep it stock and buy around 3k-3500 dollars, but honda reliablity is unmatched then the other japanese bikes then the least relaible are like non maintained aprilla, ktm and ducati. unless you got thousands in disposable income i wouldnt i bought a vicotry after riding and making money on a sportster just my honest opinion i hope you do well in your journey and chase for a bike
@jon5423 so especially if it has 75k km on it and only last 2 years maintenance records i shud run then right? Due to cam tensioners maybe never being changed (instead of every 10k km/miles) cuz he said he never heard of that issue of the plastic wearing away and getting into the oil pump, also all the problems listed in the video. The bike may not have been serviced correctly maybe I shud jus buy a kawasaki or Honda. I wanted an older Harley but I haven't been able to find a good one. But I feel like everybody is gonna rot the shi7 out of me for riding a sportster cuz of the stupid stigma attached to it and not wanting to hear ppl n their stupid comments. For a beginner rider n being only 5"10 n 200 lbs heavy build prob the best bike for me to learn on. Cuz 7k canadian for that bike is apparently a good price n it appears to be in good shape, sorry I'm jus struggling with the decision cuz I like the bike. Can I tell if it has excessive oil coming out of breather bolts without disassembling parts? Thank u so much! Also for somebody who doesn't kno how to work on bike myself. This sounds like a nightmare to own.
I don't think an ST is a good first bike. They are heavy and maintenance intensive. That said, no bike is cooler in my opinion. I just picked up an 05 Deluxe. Looks like it spent its life on the showroom floor. Has 89K on it. Changing the tensioners FOR THE FIRST TIME today. Don't be scared. They aren't time bombs.
Great video, lots of good info here. One critique. The audio quality is poor. The music overrides your voice in some sections. Your voice cadence. Your voice is monotonous, somewhat difficult to follow, and almost sounds computer generated. Again, good video, thanks.

Owner of a 2005 Dyna, originally 88, now big bored to 100ci. This has been the worst bike ever. Unreliable pieces of junk Harley’s are. I’ve spent 8k in my motor. Dark horse crankshaft (stock one had 45 THOUSANDTHS RUNOUT), S&S big bore, SE cams, fueling cam plate, pump, breathers, injectors, and so much more which I’m not going to discuss. Do not buy a Harley whoever reads this comment. They sound great, look great, but if you really want to start hating motorcycles, own a Harley for a week.
Got a deal on a 2008 FLHRCI with cams and bars and full legends suspension etc .. was great until got an inner primary leak .. that turned out to be a blown compensator that blew the clutch assembly and a tranny bearing .. not such a good deal now My 2023 RG 124 got some lifters getting old .. put 26k miles on that bike in one year .. not gentle miles .. prob gonna put up the loot to bulletproof the road glide from the bottom up. Most major problems were earlier Tc88 models and the 96 and 103. Most Tc88 motors are solid if you do the few things you mentioned with cam plate and oil pump n such. The major problems arise when people start pumping them full of juice or "beef" em up. Hi 👋, sorry it was 2000 , I have just purchased a 2003 deuce, it is in a very bad condition, I have just replaced the main belt drive and sprocket, and Jim’s upgrade inner bearing on output shaft, new coil and leads , and rebuild the HSR42 carb twice all new jets,
And I have found that it has been cam S&S G510 , not sure if it was 88 or 95 I will find out over the winter months, France.
I've had many bikes, only my currant is a HD.
It will be my last.
They are yesterday’s technology at tomorrow’s prices that what pushes me away from them.
@@jon5423 I like it now, i'm just angry it took so much time, energy, and MONEY to get it right.
I replaced my tensioners with gear drive on my '01 FXDX. SE cam chest and oil pump, S&S .510 cams, Supertrapp, Mikuni, K&N
Is the gear drive possible on fuel injected? I was told no but find that hard to believe.
Gear drive has nothing to do with fuel.
@@BobO-ho9zv It does keep your timing perfect compared to chain drive
@@dennislett7896 gear drive is preferable IF you're pinion run out is under .003"
I just went through my 2011 FLHX this year redid the entire cam chest with all S&S components 551c cams.
Tensioner replacement at 25k, crank runout, oil sumpung. I solved mi TC88 issues when I bought a DCT Wing.
Ha, don't Google what's going on with the current Gen gold wing then if you figure you solved issues with twin cam going with the Honda.
Got rid of all the junk chains and tensioners on my 02" Heritage at 15K. Upgraded to S&S gear driven cams, the only way to go to make it bulletproof.
I like what you have here. I don't know if anyone has complained but your sound level drops about a minute into the video.
RIP HD, Inc 1903-1999
Lmfao so true haha I loved my sportster
99-06 also need OEM 33443 JIMS 33443-84 TC oil pump/evo tappet block alignment tools 🧰 (X 2)
Definitely not needed. Oil pump alignment can be done by rotating the rear wheel
I have a 2017 Heritage 24k miles
What do I need to be aware of??
I would just take care of tensioners, primary and cam chain, being that new I hope 🤞 she treats you right, awesome ride 🏍️ 💨
people on their phone behind you.
Never ending service and maintenance, cam tensioners, pressed crankshaft.....love the 2012 103.c.i. wide glide.....will be selling it and going with alternative choices....sad to do it
Wow brother you are extremely thorough and I appreciate it exclamation mark
Thanks for throwing this out
Thanks for the support :)
My twin cam is 19 years old and runs like a champ twin cams don't break for the hell of it usually the owner breaks them not doing maintenance doing stupid s***
This. I just got a 2005 ST Deluxe. Bike is bitchin. Take care of your shit, y'all!
I had a 02 softail custom and put 75000 miles on it and tore it down and the cam tensioners were fine. Cyco gasket tensioners
with all the upgrades my 2012 RG needs I think I should just buy a s&s motor and be done with it! Hey S&S you should start building Motorcycles put HD right outta business 😂😂
Great info...you so chill.I almost pass out.
Information regurgitation.
Very interesting I thought they were snake oil for the longest time, that’s awesome I had no clue about their history
My 07' Dyna lowrider is my last Harley like ah old clock to fix you replace the spring. , so have about 4-grand put away
Excellent content, real world stuff.
thanks for the feedback! just trying to keep everyone riding safer longer through preventative maintenance
Hi 👋, sorry I forgot to mention great territorial very interesting though I’ve already had mine done, ride safe,
PHIL FROM THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOULIN FRANCE.
….and for sportster owners…. lucky you!
This is crazy. Just about the time I go to pull the trigger on a Harley-Davidson I come across a video like this and RUclips is full of them. I've got money. I just don't feel like spending all of it and working on these bikes. I don't want to work on a bike. I want to ride on a bike!
If youcant do even minor maintenance.,and still want a Harley . Get a Evo motor they were very dependable. I have an 06 twin cam fatboy but I've had Harleys all my life ,I can deal with the minor stuff.
@@jeffhawkins711 I appreciate that comment man. I actually have my eye on a good lookin Good running 88' Evo Softail. Yeah I always have done. All my own maintenance and many repairs.
To make your ride safe and reliable, you need this part list: Honda, Kawa, ...😂😂
Facts Honda first
@@jon5423 I own 14 light Honda's, rental bikes for tourists. Mostly 2 up, hill roads, ... they last longer than whatever HD with car sized engines. A shame. HD copied a lot from other brands, gbut after 100 years, they still fail. Why? Only "their" made in Japan parts are reliable.

And people are still complaining about the shovel and maybe they are a Harley lovers bike but a gear drive 80 cube Evo well they are the way to go and im sorry but these engines are super fast wearing engines, I have a U.L side valve and yes I changed the head gaskets twice and its not rocket fast but I never really bought a Harley for going fast I actually would own a Japanese technology bike if I wanted 1500 cc and sorry but Harley is losing many.
@@jon5423 not to mention the price and reliability I have a buddy in Canada who has both but he prefers the Indian for economy and tourqe.
Great thorough stuff thank you. A video to save for sure
Much obliged I’m glad you found value just tried to spit out what I know selling parts for 3 years. Thank you so much for the kind words
LOL you have just doubled the price of the bike. Never did anything on my Goldwing but tires and oil even at 100,000 miles. I have an Ultra as well. use the money I save on the wing to put in the Harley! safe riding..
Great video man! very usefull! Greats from México!
Well done, Sir ! 👍🏻👌🏻✌🏻👊🏻🤟🏻✊🏻
Get a hydraulic primary tensioner, thank me later.
I did ; shifts like butter now . New diamond chain after that hd auto tensioner. 😁
I have beat the absolute hell out of my Hondas, one for over 100k miles and never had to open the engines. My Harley is a pile of trash that needs rebuilt every 10k.
I have an 02 tc,cam tensioners were replaced five years ago currently have 41k bike runs strong but I’m beginning to see oil in the breather what would you suggest thanks
Breather filter may be saturated. Just a guess.
This video made my head hurt!
Are all parts in this video still UNAVAILABLE today.., in 2024?
Turn off the choke! - Evo riders to their buddy on a 07 Street Glide while waiting for the green light 🤣
R the twin cams that bad? I was gonna buy 2002 softail fxst for first bike
i sold parts alone for 3 years if you don't want to spend double the money on parts let alone cost of labor on a bike a sportster is the best option to get in and get out without losing money on harley if u keep it stock and buy around 3k-3500 dollars, but honda reliablity is unmatched then the other japanese bikes then the least relaible are like non maintained aprilla, ktm and ducati. unless you got thousands in disposable income i wouldnt i bought a vicotry after riding and making money on a sportster just my honest opinion i hope you do well in your journey and chase for a bike
@jon5423 thank u. Ya i had planned on starting with a Vulcan
Good video but lose the music next video.
Great video, lots of good info here.
One critique. The audio quality is poor. The music overrides your voice in some sections. Your voice cadence. Your voice is monotonous, somewhat difficult to follow, and almost sounds computer generated.
Again, good video, thanks.
made it to 8:29 could not go any further.
I should have kept my Sportster. Now I realize when I bought my new 2004 Heritage ST. I was buying short term running junk. This will be my last HD. __ em!!!!🤬
Got a deal on a 2008 FLHRCI with cams and bars and full legends suspension etc .. was great until got an inner primary leak .. that turned out to be a blown compensator that blew the clutch assembly and a tranny bearing .. not such a good deal now
My 2023 RG 124 got some lifters getting old .. put 26k miles on that bike in one year .. not gentle miles .. prob gonna put up the loot to bulletproof the road glide from the bottom up. I need a 100k mi motor with the miles I ride
So sell my twin cam and buy a Goldwing is what I’m hearing 😂
Harley cuts corners - 😁
I agree all just a big money grab
@@jon5423 all to please stockholders anymore;
The S&s engines are just bulletproof compared. 👌👍

@@jon5423 sorry for your troubles.
Most major problems were earlier Tc88 models and the 96 and 103. Most Tc88 motors are solid if you do the few things you mentioned with cam plate and oil pump n such. The major problems arise when people start pumping them full of juice or "beef" em up.
