    is worth mentioning a few things on this topic, almost every fighter ever that has a strong chin, always use some sort of technique that reduces the damage, Golovkin always rolls away from the punch, Rodtang always moves away from the blow, Mark Hunt on better times tuck his chin and lean forward to the opponent to mess with their timing and leverage and so on.
    The technicalities of what these fighters did is a topic for another video but it is a major factor on why they are so tough, very rarely a fighter is so tough that they just take the punch like nothing, for example Nate and Tony but both of them have so much accumulated damage that they are not the same anymore.
    Also, the length of the neck is a factor, longer neck can cause a better leverage and whip the head back more while a shorter neck has a the opposite effect, the toughest fighters typically have short necks and high trap insertions, of course there is exceptions but that's another genetic related factor to consider.
    Finally for training, a bigger neck isn't always better, Michael chandler has a neck like Yoel Romero but he can't take a punch, that's because the strength of the neck, while bigger muscles can produce bigger forces, strength isn't always the same as big, a lot of fighters like Dustin Poirier have a seemingly normal neck but it is still pretty strong neck because of the way they train. Isometric exercises and high rep sets on dynamic exercises build a stronger neck than a typical bodybuilding style set.

      No? No matter how much you use technique to dissipate the energy of the hit you WILL still go down if your skull and meningeal tissue cannot properly cushion your Brain, besides the amount of raw trauma a Brain can sustain without any protection whatsoever also varies from person to person, someone with a more rigid brain will obviously be able to get hit in the head and take it way better

      I have a theory on that I think that this is because while on steroids the fighter like everyone else experiences strength and size gains and the neck especially the traps because there is a lot of androgenic receptors are there then they will benefit heavily from steroids. So in short they get a bigger an stronger neck because of steroid use and punch resistance is heavily about the neck so that's how steroids give them a stronger chin.

    • @theshermantanker7043
      @theshermantanker7043 2 года назад +2

      @@tfforster7078 It's not just about the neck. We obviously won't be able to know which fighter has these traits because obviously we can't cut open his skull while he's still alive, but the strength of meningeal tissue is also a major factor as well, as is the vasculature of your Brain (it can help with rigidity and in turn the amount of head trauma without injury one can sustain increases)

    • @bigheadrhino

      Does testerone also affect reflexes? Having even a slightly increased reaction time can make all the difference because the fighter’s body can prepare for the punch before it lands.

    To me one thing was how in shape i was. First couple times i sparred every punch felt like thunder but after a year and being in shape the same dudes punches felt like feathers. In my mind when you fatigue you become a lot more susceptible to being ko'd due to reaction time slowing down making it easier to get hit with something you cant brace for.

    One of the best mma channels! Can you do a new video on reach and body types in mma. You did a logical mistake in your reach video by using the ape index as a solution to the inaccuracy of reach because of shoulder with and finger lenght. Whould also be extremely interesting to understand advantages and disadvantages of leg and arm reach in long and short distance stand up and grappling aswell as shoulder and waist with and height. Is there an ideal body type? I think you are the only mma youtuber with the anatomical understanding to create this video🙏

      Thank you, we will definitely add those ideas to the list! They're very interesting for sure. I believe that’s because of the Dutch style kickboxing which usually contains hard sparring where you almost get semi concussed every other sparring session so when you get to the fight your chin basically took its best shots at the gym! Melvin Manhoef is another example who is also a Dutch style kick boxer who I believe also lost his chin via 24/7 hard sparring. Its sad to be honest cuz brain damage is irreversible!

    Genetics and working out your neck can play huge factor, but majority of it comes to how to take the punch like Rodtang who just fades away with the punch, or Poirier who brace for impact and grinning his teeth to flex his jaw muscles.

    Such a fascinating subject. Seems like a major factor (beyond this list) is natural resistance. Some have blue eyes, other brown; some people can take a lick while others can't. Grew up playing football and wrestling, lacrosse through college, was a rough and tumble kid. I've had my bell rung but only knocked out once when a 3/4" board was thrown off our roof and hit me on the head. Taken some punches in a few scaps but always wondered if I had a good "chin". Don't plan on finding out
