Arguably the masterpiece of the album - for me, anyways. Very simple, very tender, very beautiful. All about the subtleties. Influence by The Beatles is obvious. I've been coming back to this for 30 years, for a reason. It's a sweet little cake of a song, the piano break being the cherry on top. I love this track, very much.

This is a pretty good debut album. Their second 'Time and a Word' is much better and then Steve Howe joins the band for their third and they skyrocket to greatness!🤩

Ah that's when Steve joined, thank you. I'm pretty unfamiliar with the 1st 2 albums.

Very much a typical Jon Anderson song. Nice, chill, relaxing.

I like this one, it kind of reminds me of some of the stuff America band did. Queen complained about how Trident studio made the drums sound too low, Queen wanted a big room sound but Trident was difficult to work with. Trident had their idea of how it should be even when the bands thought differently. Great reaction

Serendipity as I look at YT for the first time today ❤
On relisten this time, I can hear occasional shades of Genesis’s Trespass album

The standout on this record is probably survival,,,when Steve howe joined the band on guitar a couple years later they really started developing their sound, becoming much more intricate

Here we go. As I've stated I have a pile of 70's Yes and Yes solo albums up to Tormato. I never considered or bother to get the first two albums. As with Queen I missed so much. This song is kind of beautiful I must say. No clunkers so far...

JP: "It's sweet". No, that's the other ballad. 😉 Jon's predilection for Beatles-inspired harmonic hooks shows on this one. During his 'gap year' between his first band The Warriors and meeting Chris in 1968, Jon was being hustled as a pop singer and recorded a number of pretty dire songs. But I think they helped to show him what worked and what didn't, so that by '69 he was a more polished and capable songwriter. It's not brilliant, but someone clearly decided they needed a couple of ballads on the album to counter-balance the heavier rockers, and this is the better of the two IMO.
Chris had a Fender Tele bass as well as the Ricky, and if I had to guess he used that bass on this one. It's sort of an obvious choice, right?
