Great and straight to the point, just remember to go into Settings of your Wifi connection (on your laptop) then sharing tab and to authorize to share the connection, or it will says fail to obtain ip address.

hey I have a netgear router with a Ethernet cable im wondering if it should be connected to LAN(*black plug) or internet (*yellow) on the back because im trying to get internet to play online gaming

The Internet port should be going from your router to your modem. There should be about 3 or 4 LAN ports which you can connect to your PS3.
