My God... They finally increased the height for better cooling! My old 15 inch Razor few years back had its Intel processor completely fried after leaving it overnight completing MATLAB simulations/calculations. Glad to see Razor finally did something to fix it (at least according to initial specs/benchmark numbers) and maybe I'll try out their new laptop in the next few years when my G15 needs an upgrade. (Btw, I got a full refund for my Razor thanks to Microsoft's Store extended warranty)
I OC’d my 2070MQ early 2019 Advanced Blade to like a ~7400-7500 Time Spy Graphics score. Didn’t come across any major issues in 4 years so was looking forward to the next major redesign (and consequently a big jump in performance). Razer is delivering on that front because I feel they got left behind in the TDP race. Still the most premium laptop chassis out there. Nothing like a true aluminum unibody.
@@jhpk Yeah, like, I’m 4 years in with no battery bloat. I swear there are more MSI/Asus/Lenovo Legion owners talking about and repeating the supposed battery swelling issue than actual Razer Blade owners.
@@anarki_in5680 Well my undervolted late 2019 Advanced R70 Optokb version battery swollen only after a year or so I have to pay $100 for a new battery. Bad experience. I have used almost every Razer peripherals after purchasing Blade, most of them ended with a bad experiences. Guess I have bad luck then?
@@jhpk I guess. If you can swell up any battery in a year for any product, it’s very much your use case that is at fault, or your maintenance. Qualitatively the only thing Razer can be faulted for is that they use laptop batteries rated for 500 cycles (Apple uses batteries rated for a 1000 cycles). Even so, Razer came out with a 2 year battery warranty now to handle this. But even without that warranty, since you’re a 2019 owner, 500 cycles puts 500 days of complete 100% charging between you and a possible battery bloat. I imagine you continuously charged and drained out your laptop multiple times a day/gamed on it plugged off a lot? If so then you would bloat many a battery, Razer or otherwise.
@@anarki_in5680 it's the opposite. I rarely drained out my Blade's battery. I can see you have good experience with your Blade but quite can't understand why you are trying to defend the company. Blade battery issue is notorious and have been constant issue for 2018~2020 model users if you can look it up. I have cheap MSI laptop late 2018 which was under a thousand bucks, 2015 Macbook pro which I used very harshly, 2020 Macbook air and very old Samsung laptop. Also have seen my colleagues using laptops from numerous company. NONE of them had swollen battery issue under a 3 year. One year battery issue is unacceptable for any excuses. It's just their QC problem. It's not just for the laptop. If any device uses a lithium ion battery, and if it's more than a whopping three thousand dollar, you expect more than a year long lifespan. At the end of the day now I fully understand Razer. They are just a small Chinese computer peripherals company trying something cool and big. They are not like a Alienware/Legion/ROG which always have reliable big brother behind them.
No 27-36in would of been more popular for most viewing experiences. 18in was small for a TV and likely was one used in someplace like a kitchen or bedroom. Around 18in was also the size of a mid sized monitor then though
Thickness doesn't matter too much for me, but weight definitely does. The XPS 15 and blade 15 used to be quite pocketable. I always saw Razer laptops as powerful ultrabooks, compared to proper gaming laptops that were twice as thick. Especially the Blade stealth was a truly unique product that they decided to stop selling. I'm not happy with that new direction.
I don't get why 18 inch doesn't have 4K Panel version. These is absurd. I always wanted a larger screen, than 17.3 inches, and none of the new laptops from CES, have 18 inch with 4K. So so dissapointed.
Cool laptops, these RTX4000 generation laptop GPU look promising, and the brightness and hardware privacy for the webcam are awesome. PD: Any 4K display can do 1080p native, just each 4 pixels (2x2) will show the same color, that's nothing new.
the 16 inch model with resolution switching mini LED is such a good idea for creators that play games I do wish they would add that OLED panel from last year though
I really want to see the performance numbers from these RTX 4000 laptop series cards. Nvidia has been screwing up desktop performance big time with the increase in price... wondering about the laptop. When would the benchmarks be available Dave? :) Can't wait for your next video! Also, would you be covering Tongfang chassis laptops too this time? It's been a while.
Hey Dave, would be great if you could also say some more about noise performance when you are allowed to test them some day. Because yeah, performance is great but actually, not in a trade off for 40-60 decibels. Plus performance on battery is a thing too I guess. Once these companies really wanna try to compete with Apple you need to address those. I really love the power in the 16inch , especially for 3D rendering, where Apple honestly doesn‘t see land but yeah, not if the trade off is two hours battery and an airplane next to me for two hours. Actually that is also for gaming laptops, I got a aero 15inch in the household and its so fucking loud while gaming, you can not enjoy it without any noise cancellation and damaging your ears with it. I wait for the PS5 moment in gaming notebooks, the PS4 pro was not reasonable with noise, you couldn’t enjoy gaming with the fans so loud but the PS5 is almost silent compared to it. That’s where gaming laptop and creator laptop need to get.
I have the exact same experience with my Aero 15X. I honestly hate it. Not to mention I had issues with the ram failing and shit like that. I started realizing gaming laptops don’t make any sense. Just get a pc for games, and a macbook for travel/work.
My worry about these machines is battery lifespan, in 2-3 years those bad boys start to swell pretty bad and then have to go through the hassle of sending the machine to them to replace the battery, etc.
That native-resolution switching feature is phenomenal and with that gorgeous screen makes this the clear frontrunner for most desirable mixed use (work/gaming) laptops. I'm currently running a Lenovo Legion Slim 7 with a 5800h and RTX3060, but the Blade 16 would be my most desired device now.
I think they can come up with a “thin” design again if they made an AMD (ryzen 7000 nonX) version of this. Razer innovated the laptop gaming space with the thin form-factor. And they are devolving if they go thicker from here on out.
Nope. Nobody asked for gaming laptops to be as thin as these companies were making them and it was totally destroying their performance. A gaming laptop that actually has the cooling capacity to make full use of the hardware inside it is a revelation. We have been waiting for this product for years.
Glad you agree that going thicker is the right move. I am a big fan of the new Blade 16/18 changes. It really helps razer compete against other brands that have been rocking higher performance for years.
I like what the they did here. It gives the 14 especially, 16, and 18 distinct advantages. The 15 and 14 were marginally different in screen size, but the 14 felt better because it was lightweight, more portable, and carried the AMD CPU for battery life. Now with each size difference, you really pick which suits you best. Blade 14 - portable ,lightweight, good battery, and AMD. Blade 16 - All-rounder. Blade 18 - Balls to the wall, desktop performance for the power user.
I'm interested to see what the new 16 core AMD laptop parts can do within the given form factors. On desktop the 16 cores still perform brilliantly in eco mode.
Battery life is 17 minutes in furnace mode and 30 minutes in toaster mode, running at half the clock speed. Plugging the laptop to a wall outlet to unlock full performance, also known as the thermonuclear mode. Radiation shielding and heat resistant suit highly recommended.
I couldn't agree more about the thicker design. I've been saying that for years, laptops could be faster with bigger batteries if they just made them somewhat thicker. Sure, it's not as sleek but I'll take function over form for a device I use every day
5:37 Hmm I think this stacked nvme may cause serious problems. I have experienced overheating and speed droping from 3500mb/s to 150 mb/s when transfering big files between the internal drives on both the msi ge76 and the rog m16, which have thermal pads and copper plates installed.
I love their new design in the blade. I prefer thicker laptops because of cooling space, more potential spaces for multiple components. They really accommodated the cooling capacity now and the chassis is lovely.
For Laptops, Razer had and then lost me. Had a 2017 Blade 15 in top spec. Paid discount price 3700€ for it back then. At first I loved the hardware and feeling, worked great and performed flawlessly. But it soon had defects (under warranty) 6 times in 2 years, and then a final fault 1 week after warranty ended. (We have 2 years warranty in germany). Sold the broken device for 350. Thats 3350€ for 2 years of laptop and sending it in 6 times - no thank you. I never had a device failing that often for the same reason every single time (motherboard power circuit, needs new replacement board every time). Now using an XMG device (intel developed) for 2 years with no issues whatsoever, just not as nicely built.
I had a similar experience with my Aero 15x.. it was nice at first, then issues started popping up. Battery life degraded faster than I expected too. I don’t think these issues are unique to razer. Honestly I don’t think I’ll ever get a gaming laptop after that experience. Better to get a gaming PC for gaming and a MacBook for work/school
Since 4k is a perfect multiple of 1080p, the "dual resolution" is just a very practical trick of having 1 big pixel occupying 4 real pixels of the display.
Thanks Dave for showing the laptops side by side and giving good perspectives. Many other reviews are so zoomed in you really cannot tell the size differences. Well done. oh p.s. in college I remember when I got a 19 inch monitor to code on my desktop PC, which was pretty grand back then. This laptop is almost that big!
I got the 4090 razer blade 18, twice. There is an issue with either the software or the driver that causes a flickering screen while gaming. Razer support has been very unhelpful, as usual. People please avoid,
Kind of a missed opportunity for Razer to not use the new 16 core AMD chips. Considering how efficient their 16 core desktop parts can be in eco mode. Efficiency interests me more than pure performance. I got rid of my bulky MSI with its 2 SLi card and dual power bricks.
yeah honestly I haven't even seriously looked at any of the recent laptop launches bc I know that battery is gonna be awful, Intel really needs to figure out efficiency
I am so, so, so happy that Razer took the Apple route and made the computer thicker. It's still relatively portable given the power of the hardware but the 15 and 17 desperately needed to have thicker bodies.
It makes no sense to have an 18" laptop that doesn't have the numpad and a separate PgUp/PgDn/Home/End cluster. Those keys are used a lot in Blender and After Effects, not to mention helpful for Word/Docs.
I'm still rocking my base 2020 blade 15 after 2 years, haven't had too many issues besides having to replace the screen myself (due to damage I accidentally did to it, and for some reason changing the screen out seems to have tripled the battery life). idk if I would want to get another blade whenever I have to upgrade in the future, but this thing is serving me well so far.
I have a blade 15 for around 2 year and 3 months now - starting to notice a slight battery bloat as well as overheating. Any advice on how to keep temperatures low and also if you've had to clean out the fans and swap batteries? Do you also use a laptop stand or a cooling pad?
@@antimatics759 the vast majority of the time I use this thing it is plugged in with a cooling pad / stand I have cleaned the fans once, but they are definitely do for another one - I have honestly not done too much to maintain the thing
So glad they thought of better cooling. My Blade 15 3070 80w had swollen battery so I had to remove it. Lets see how this design will perform because the wattage is pretty high as well at 140-170
Hope they eventually refresh the 14 to these nice 16:10 screens. Had one for about 8 months and loved it. Accidentally dropped it and got and the shell got dented and screen a little scratched up. Best Buy gave a full refund and just been using the Surface Pro 8 since.
I hope we see this shift back to thicker laptops expand across the industry. I loved the gradual pushing of boundaries with thinner and lighter stuff as much as the next guy but over the years I've come to the realisation that it comes second to comfort and usability. I'll gladly take back some height and weight for better temps. Also give me back my RJ45 port while we're at it...

I always wonder why freshwater guys don't dip their plants. 5mins in copper would nuke any hitchhikers and (iodine) dips are standard practice in the salt water world.
@@kingeggs it is because he is new to it
Came here to see new tech. I actually learned something about Aquariums. Wild.
What's wrong with snails? :P
Omg 3.2kg laptop!! Thought that era was over
Thicker machines makes so much sense thank you! I need more of this true performance I don’t want it to be gimped.
very nice to see the slight move away from Form over function, to Function over Form here.
I love your reviews Dave. Keep up the good work
Nothing like a true aluminum unibody.
beware the battery swelling issue ;)
Fun fact, in 2001, 18inch was a good size tv.
No 27-36in would of been more popular for most viewing experiences. 18in was small for a TV and likely was one used in someplace like a kitchen or bedroom. Around 18in was also the size of a mid sized monitor then though
@@crestofhonor2349 I had a 18 inch tv in my studio when I was in college, that's why I said it was good size
@@seanjiang3174 Yeah for college dorms that's a nice size
Thickness doesn't matter too much for me, but weight definitely does. The XPS 15 and blade 15 used to be quite pocketable. I always saw Razer laptops as powerful ultrabooks, compared to proper gaming laptops that were twice as thick. Especially the Blade stealth was a truly unique product that they decided to stop selling. I'm not happy with that new direction.
Well people wanted more battery life and better cooling and therefore more weight
I don't get why 18 inch doesn't have 4K Panel version. These is absurd. I always wanted a larger screen, than 17.3 inches, and none of the new laptops from CES, have 18 inch with 4K. So so dissapointed.
Really hoping they give us a glossy screen option for the 18 inch
Haven't been here in ain, your new studio looks fantastic
Cool laptops, these RTX4000 generation laptop GPU look promising, and the brightness and hardware privacy for the webcam are awesome. PD: Any 4K display can do 1080p native, just each 4 pixels (2x2) will show the same color, that's nothing new.
It won't double your refresh rate normally. In this case it will.
Man Dave just gets up in the AM, walk in basement, give video, and walk back upstairs and make breakfast and go back to bed
the 16 inch model with resolution switching mini LED is such a good idea for creators that play games
I do wish they would add that OLED panel from last year though
OLED would’ve been sick! But using a mini LED on the MacBook the screen is still really nice. I think it would look good
Its cool to see how smooth that white outline when you show the internal.. Its just aestethic!
The fully specced 4090 laptop is gonna be at least $4000 no question.
This is the Razer I been waiting for one with a Mini LED... amazing..stuff
Excited for the new 16!
you can see the bulk of that extra thickness is in the lid, presumably to accommodate that mini led screen
Really impressed with how far you've come man been watching your videos for a while thought I subscribed ages ago but you certainly earned it.
My worry about these machines is battery lifespan, in 2-3 years those bad boys start to swell pretty bad and then have to go through the hassle of sending the machine to them to replace the battery, etc.
It’s not that hard changing it yourself. It’s just a single plug connecting to the motherboard.
We have been waiting for this product for years.
that screen is brighter than my future
I agree will that...
Glad you agree that going thicker is the right move. I am a big fan of the new Blade 16/18 changes. It really helps razer compete against other brands that have been rocking higher performance for years.
I am not first
God that's a clean intro. Love ya stuff dude!
Best gaming laptops on the market are finally here! 🎉
Your video production gets better and better! :-)
Oh boy can't wait to see these Razer batteries in 2 years!
I just love that 3:2 aspect ratio is starting to be more common. Screens are getting so good, even at lower end laptops, even with 90hz.
I pre-ordered a Blade 18 with a RTX-4090. So excited.
Finally the thin bezel that I've been waiting for from Razer !
I've been looking forward to this video, enjoy, thanks Dave
this years laptop gonna be WILD for sure. means a lot coming from a desktop guy who never ever even looked at laptop.
Battery life is 17 minutes in furnace mode and 30 minutes in toaster mode, running at half the clock speed. Plugging the laptop to a wall outlet to unlock full performance, also known as the thermonuclear mode. Radiation shielding and heat resistant suit highly recommended.
Lol more like 8-9 hours when using the integrated graphics. It’s not 2001 anymore you can have your cake and eat it too.
Are these ones still gonna have batteries that swell up after a year and a half of use?
I couldn't agree more about the thicker design. I've been saying that for years, laptops could be faster with bigger batteries if they just made them somewhat thicker. Sure, it's not as sleek but I'll take function over form for a device I use every day
It's the razer block now
18in with no numpad should be a crime...
4:49 didn’t expect it’d be that humongous
Ahh was waiting for a new Blade to come out and a video to be made on it just the other day
Thank you Dave
Since 4k is a perfect multiple of 1080p, the "dual resolution" is just a very practical trick of having 1 big pixel occupying 4 real pixels of the display.
Thanks Dave for showing the laptops side by side and giving good perspectives. Many other reviews are so zoomed in you really cannot tell the size differences. Well done. oh p.s. in college I remember when I got a 19 inch monitor to code on my desktop PC, which was pretty grand back then. This laptop is almost that big!
No laptop will ever be desktop replacement, it a substitute.
razer's battery is always the thing that bugged me most. So glad seeing them made these changes.
60fps on this video look weird :D Great video as always!
thats a chunky laptop dammm
Been a while since I heard this outro. It's a nice feeling.
I got the 4090 razer blade 18, twice. There is an issue with either the software or the driver that causes a flickering screen while gaming. Razer support has been very unhelpful, as usual. People please avoid,
Finally! I'm so happy laptops are getting thicker again!
They still make a thicker laptop look great. This is such a smart move for the overall usability of the device.
It makes no sense to have an 18" laptop that doesn't have the numpad and a separate PgUp/PgDn/Home/End cluster. Those keys are used a lot in Blender and After Effects, not to mention helpful for Word/Docs.
18inch is a sweet spot
I see my boy finally hopped on Finasteride, the hair's looking good!
Your eyes seems not okay. Hope you're okay buddy. Great content by the way
When a 16 inch laptop looks smaller relatively.! Oh my goodness. loving it.:D
02:52 That's what she said.
So glad they thought of better cooling.
My Blade 15 3070 80w had swollen battery so I had to remove it.
Lets see how this design will perform because the wattage is pretty high as well at 140-170
Glad to see that the 18 was able to at least keep the Razr aesthetic
in any unclear situation, watch dave2d’s video and enjoy.
Pumped for the 4K miniLED. Finally we get away from LED screens with no local dimming and fake HDR.
Hopefully a full review soon 🙏
Afaik iirc, Asus did already have that dual mode switching display last year on one of their ROG laptops (I think it was the Zephyrus Duo 16)
You are correct.
@Dave2D is the new Blade 16 somewhat silent with their new cooling solution? Thanks!
16's double native resolution schtick's going to be interesting.
18 tho... that's an absolutely gigantic unit, wow.
Sad to see many 18 inch laptops without a numpad, as a heavy excel user this would have been perfect as a desktop replacement
Hope they eventually refresh the 14 to these nice 16:10 screens.
Had one for about 8 months and loved it. Accidentally dropped it and got and the shell got dented and screen a little scratched up. Best Buy gave a full refund and just been using the Surface Pro 8 since.
And 32 GB of RAM.
the general design of the 16'' kinda resembles the 14'' m1 pro
I hope we see this shift back to thicker laptops expand across the industry. I loved the gradual pushing of boundaries with thinner and lighter stuff as much as the next guy but over the years I've come to the realisation that it comes second to comfort and usability. I'll gladly take back some height and weight for better temps. Also give me back my RJ45 port while we're at it...
