  • After unveiling the Tascam last week, I've gone back inside and set up the calibration. Once calibrated inside on the circuit board, all further calibrating can be accomplished by adjusting the front panel controls labeled "bias" and "level". After getting a good calibration, I connect a dbx unit and record a demo song while switching between source and tape. The difference is barely noticeable, and that's what you want. The 122 MKIII is a high-end studio machine and one of few machines that employ a direct drive capstan motor.

Top notch in my book. No dual capstan.. but, still direct drive... impressive.

This is so useful, Thanks Hammy. Just got a MKIII, and while adjusting the Bias i can follow all your steps, except from setting Level to the 0db mark. While turning the Level knob it doesn't go higher than -3 db. Do you know why this might be?

The question arises, "does this happen on all tape types, or only one, and is it peculiar to one brand only?" You may need to acquire a calibration cassette with Dolby Level reference. The adjustments for calibration are on the circuit board inside, but I wouldn't adjust anything without a calibration cassette. That's where I would start. Thanks for watching.

@@HammyTechnoid First of all, thanks for your reply. I really appreciate it. Just ordered a calibration cassette. I've been using a brand new BASF CR-E II. Will come back with more insights once I get the calibration tape!

@@fontoledo BASF is a good brand, but to be certain it is problem with the deck and not the tape, I would try several brands. TDK and Maxell are very good tapes. If you can get your hands on one of those and try the calibration setup, it would be telling. I hope you get this sorted out.

Very helpful. Thanks for making this. By the way, what freq tone did you use from the tektronix? I chose an online tone generator at 400hz (like the oscillator tone on the deck) is that okay?

On this deck, it provides its own test tones. The outboard tone generated by the Techtronix was around 400hz.

@@HammyTechnoid Yes, sorry I failed to mention that I have this deck and I'm aware of the test tones of course. I believe the standard internal tones it generates are 400Hz and 10kHz. Just wondering why they might have chosen 400Hz instead of 100Hz or 1kHz, maybe a halfway house?
