yooo lets go my main. R is always hard to use, since allies can immediately heal a shit ton, your enchanters can heal them, your allies can flash away while u ult.
But cases like the mundo dive bot, ulting earlier is good since he has tower aggro and can always die.
There are times I use it really early like if diana is going to ult into 5 enemies with no zhonyas. But its mostly when ally is maybe going to tower dive. They sometimes back out not thinking of zilean ult, so I ult them early to convey my intentions for them to go all out and dive.
You can also bind self cast to alt+ability key if you don't have mouse buttons.

How do you bring up the attack range indication?
Mine is the C keybind.
This was going through my head when Pekin was looking over the abilities. Since only 2 of his attacks scale off of AP, I think it'd be interesting to see how AD and attack speed would work in tandem with his stun and slow. Maybe some extra CD in there as well.

I have to say, nowadays I don't fear zed mid anymore, I fear viktor mid. This champ is too safe and has too much damage with little to no counter play
