I just came upon these, wish they were still being done, as they show layouts I've always loved in magazines. And the very idea ANYONE would try to represent horseshoe curve in O scale, and doing a great job, is mind-blowing for a room smaller than an airplane hangar
I am impressed by the studious, smart CALM and serenity of reporting their skills and experience in this entire video which is an EYE OPENER for me. I am tremendously impressed Mr. Terrance by this compendium of talent and expertise. I have always wanted an O Scale and looked down upon it as clunky. O Scale has come a long long way. I had always thought that I would have to accept three rail to enjoy O. I was so wrong and now I feel left out and now left with the delicate beauty of enjoying HO scale. This video has been tremendously enjoyable for me. I am very grateful for what you have reported here. You have reported on great American craftsmanship and... it's a reporting of modeling the American past. From the bottom of my heart - THANK YOU SO MUCH! arthur (Ngai)
I had to move after 26 years living in the same house and invested many hours and of course dollars in my 4th layout. I now live in a large house, but unfortunately only a small spare room for a small layout, build an out building or join a club. these two rail o scale layouts take me back to my grandfathers layout when i was growing up. i think it would be great to find a club to work on something like this. All I know is I can't just leave the hobby behind and it breaks my heart to rip apart what I've created. Great video!
Terry, thanks for putting together and posting this video. Very inspiring and interesting to see the different O scale layouts. I found the discussion on how O scale doesn't have to be expensive or take up an aircraft hanger size space interesting. Looking forward to more of these type videos in the future. Cheers, Kevin
Thank you. Not just for showing O scale, but for explaining it to the world unfamiliar with two rail O scale. Look forward to seeing more in the future.

I am very much 'hooked,' on these new MODULAR-sized units: I'm sorry I can't remember the name which is used, but I'm planning on a new full basement railroad: now, I'm going to build it modular - I'm not building a basement railroad, such that it can't be moved. I don't know the future, but this modular construction idea, inspires me. Building 2' x 8' modules, to the new height standard, makes me feel that if I move again, then I can pack up and not lose the hours and time I have put into the layout. This is an excellent video: thank you.
Sorry to hear about your loss. I myself have lost a lot of my O scale friends, it's so sad but many of them were older and time stands still for nobody! Thanks for posting the great video on these wonderful layouts!
I remember going to a hobby shop and looking at some O scale 2 rail track and thinking,,,, something is missing. I have lots of Lionel trains. About 15 years ago I dismantled an O scale 2 rail layout to the northwest of Stillwater Minnesota. All the tracks were hand laid and hand spiked. The builder of it had passed away and it was left there until his wife died. Then her sister got the house and had me remove it. What a job it was taking it apart and getting the bench work down the stairs. I still have the unfinished turntable, some cars from kits and part of his RR photography collection.
Love the 3 rail, my Dad and I had that. Two rail is more realistic. My Dad, home from many battles in 1957, bought enormous amounts of Lionel. He smiled.
Sorry to hear about Wes. His commentary was very informative and the layout was outstanding. I'm glad you were able to get this footage as I would've probably never knew of this fabulous model railroad.
I run Scale O. However, I run Atlas track in 3-rail. I only have Scale-sized engines and cars. If I had room for a bigger layout I would sell much of my equipment and get true O-Scale. This is an incredible video. Thanks.
all I can say is Wow cant wait till the day I can unbox all my O-Scale equipment and run it on my own layout!! Great inspiration! Thanks so much for doing this video..
Very impressive and very inspiring!!!!! I am a pretty new convert and started to collect some engines and cars. That first layout has given me some ideas as I can I think squeeze in z 8 x 16 and I am now evaluating some H0 4 x 8 layouts I was in to having it as a shelf kind of layout with an opening in the middle and seeing how it works on the first layout, I i knew I was on the right track! In short thank you very much for sharing this video and making it. Now I am looking forward to the 2 rail O scale 2017!
Thank you for doing this video! The O scale has changed so much and is very nice. The NW layout was very nice. I just hope that along with technology the prices will come down.
Thanks for putting this together Terry-great work! Has anyone heard anything about Chris Smith's N&W layout? Just wondering if it was ever finished. I love his scenery techniques......
The third modeler talking about "the next time he plans on being house bound for a long time," freaked me out. I know this was 2016 but talking like that almost sounds like we knew a pandemic was coming or something. What an eery thing to say. If only he really knew the magnitude of housebound-ness we'd all experience in 2020. God I wish I had my own layout. 2020 would've been way less crap.
Terry you've gained 82 comments related to this RUclips video alone. Admittedly, I've viewed segments of this film close to that number. Please take credit for my becoming a member of a Model Train Club as recent as 4 years ago, and actually meeting one of your featured Master Modelers chiefly due to having watched this fantastic video.
Thank you for your kind comments. I do these videos to popularize the hobby and O Scale. If you've joined a club then mission accomplished! Enjoy your journey in model railroading!
Wow! All these layouts are SO IMPRESSIVE. Especially the finally layout. The " preservation layout". It seems impossible to get it done right. The best in the business. !
The big layout you showed to me is the best one, thats not taking anything from the others all which are very nice but i enjoyed your video to the fullest but horseshoe just really stuck my compliments sir and thank you for sharing
I wish there was a O SCALE 2 RAIL CLUB IN THE Chicago area or suburbs. ALL 2 RAIL O SCALE lay outs are PRIVATE. NO OPEN CLUBS. Somebody needs to do some thing about that!!!!!!!!
MrBillCNW Chicago is full of 2 rail O Scale! I don't know about clubs since I don't live there. You need to attend the big O Scale show in March. You can get info there. Look for the date on the O Scale Kings website.
What's wrong with going to open houses? Attend a few and find a nice, large layout that does operating sessions. It's almost like a club, but you have to be in the loop to join in.
i have attended the o scale show in Lombard, IL. ALL CLUBS IN O SCALE 2 RAIL IN THE CHICAGO ARE PRIVATE, SOME ONE NEEDS TO OPEN A 2 RAIL O SCALE IN THE CHICAGO AREA......
Great video. While I'm not yet considering 2 rail, I am interested in 3rs and converting my rolling stock to kadees. One thing keeping me from 2 rail is having to replace track and not having the Lionel legacy control system.
You can do good work in 3RS. One member of our local group has a fantastic 3RS layout. He uses scale wheels and kadees. I've uploaded a video to my channel: ruclips.net/video/rXmJ2nN7txw/видео.html
Boy I wish someday I could have the legacy layout.. My grandma has a massive steel building she's planned out just to let me do my 2 rail O scale kingdom. Of course my layout will be modular so as to allow for transport to shows if I choose to bring an area or two of the layout to a big show like at DFW for example.
Thank you for your kind comments. Modular is the way to go - take it from someone who just had to dismantle a basement-filling layout and could not find a suitable basement to put it into. My advice is build your layout, don't delay, you do not know what the future holds. I put off finishing my layout and then was hit with a disability that prevents me from doing so. Don't live with regret.
@@2railoscale yes Sir, as soon as I am able to, construction begins immediately. I honestly thought about doing what you do and traveling around to other 2 rail layouts as there are many of them here in Texas and making my own RUclips series.
Some people have all manner of objections. Fortunately, most of them are minor. The trains are too loud; the trains are too soft. "I don't want to hear the narration" or "I can't hear the narration". I do the best that I can. My latest videos are shot with 2-3 cameras running. The narrations are recorded with studio-grade microphones and mixers. The next video that I will post is going to be a revisit to Rick Wright's outstanding 3 rail layout. I'm gritting my teeth for the flaming the 2 rail guys will give me.
@@2railoscale there is no way this video should get a thumbs down.constructive criticism is ok,but I just finished watching entire video for the second time and my only complaint is my layout and equipment isn't anything compared to these layouts.they are a testimony to the skill and knowledge of these modelers.great stuff.

Thanks for your interest. As far as I know, no other videos have been done on John Sethian's layout. His layout was featured on the cover of the November 2017 Model Railroader magazine. He's also had many articles in O Scale Trains magazine and his layout has been featured at least once. I hope that this helps.
I grew up in the fifties. Lionel and American flyer had the most un-realistic tracks... I hated them. To see 2-track layouts like this makes me wanna be 9 again.
There was a plastic, static O Scale model of a San Francisco cable car made by, I think, Testors many years ago. I have one somewhere. If I can find it I will post details.
Traditional O Scale uses a gauge of 1 1/4 inches which is 5 feet in quarter inch scale. Proto 48 uses the correct gauge of 4' 81/2" (1.177). But more importantly, P48 adopts an ethos to model with higher fidelity and fewer compromises.
That may not be true. As many O Scalers age out, they are selling their gear at very reasonable prices. Don't look on ebay - it's often a ripoff. Get on the OSCALEYARDSALE group at groups.io. You'll find some bargains. See my presentation "Why O Scale" at the 21-22 minute mark to see cost comparisons vs. the other scales.
You don't have to buy brass or the high-end resin models assembled by a famous craftsmen. An Intermountain kit boxcar typically goes for $25 and builds into a nice car. The same car, factory built, goes for, typically, $40. Also, even on OSCALEYARDSALE you have to know who are the dealers who are selling at a a profit. Patience will reveal the guys liquidating a collection. I hardly consider myself rich, but I have amassed quite a collection.
