CONUS Lines Revisited Split Audio
One of the only complaints about my videos that I get goes something like this: "I can't hear the choos-choos for that guy talking over them" (or vice-versa). Now I try to balance the sound of the choos-choos with the narration as best that I can; just goes to prove the adage "You can't please all of the people all of the time..."
However, I will try to. Took me a long time to formulate a solution. This video represents that solution. The Narration is completely in the right channel. The sound of the trains is completely in the left (or is it the other way around?). By adjusting the balance control the viewer can get ANY mix of narration and train sounds that he wants.
If people like this v...

Microcontrollers for Model Railroads
Просмотров 3202 года назад
Here's my clinic titled "Microcontrollers for Model Railroading". This clinic is an update and generalization of my "LaunchPad for Model Railroads". It expands the earlier clinic to more microcontrollers. However this clinic dates from 2016, and I did not update it to 2022; so it may be inaccurate in spots. However, the ideas & techniques presented are still valid. Enjoy!
LaunchPad For Model Railroaders

Here's my clinic titled “LaunchPad For Model Railroaders”. This clinic was presented at the “Streetsville Junction” Convention in Toronto in 2013. It was only the second clinic that I had presented. Unfortunately, I was not familiar with my video camera, so I was not aware that my camera would shut down on its own after several minutes. Between day 1 & day 2, found a camera setting that allowed...

On 1 Feb, 2017 I was at the New York Society of Model Engineers (NYSME). NYSME has both O Scale and HO layouts. On the O scale side, NYSME is a traditional club, providing multiple routes and long runs for members' equipment. I took some impromptu video. If you would like a more in-depth vidoe of this club, let me know in the comments. It may be possible to go back.

CONUS Lines Revisited

No, I'm not changing the focus of this channel. It will remain overwhelmingly 2 Rail O Scale. However, occasionally, I will feature some layouts which exemplify the best practices of scale railroading even though it's 3 Rail. Rick Wright's CONUS Lines is just such a railroad. Rick follows scale practices with the exception that his locomotives remain 3 Rail. You can pick up most pieces of Rick'...

Here is a slideshow of my former O Scale B&O layout. Putting together this slideshow took me down memory lane. I remembered how much effort it took to build something like this. Pretty good video. However, the audio mixing causes the engine sounds to overpower the narrations. It’s to the point where much of it is unintelligible. I know making videos is very labor-intensive, but if you still have the original soundtracks, please consider remixing. It would then be an excellent video.

I am very much 'hooked,' on these new MODULAR-sized units: I'm sorry I can't remember the name which is used, but I'm planning on a new full basement railroad: now, I'm going to build it modular - I'm not building a basement railroad, such that it can't be moved. I don't know the future, but this modular construction idea, inspires me. Building 2' x 8' modules, to the new height standard, makes me feel that if I move again, then I can pack up and not lose the hours and time I have put into the layout. This is an excellent video: thank you.

Ok, let me start by stating that this railroad, and many others are Magnificent! They truly represent (perhaps) hundreds of thousands of people-hours, perhaps in excess of $100,000 in cash outlay - they are excellent. Now I wish to express a few thoughts - with respect, please. If you doubt my words, then please spend a few minutes and watch a REAL train pass by. Be critical, look closely. The power units, the engines most appear to have gone through a tar, oil, and dirt bath - this is realism. Most, not all, but most rolling stock is covered in dirt, and graffiti, some are slightly worn and torn up - a bit. NONE of these best of the best model railroads show any of these signs which reflect REALITY. This is one of my major gripes: next, listen closely to the sounds of a REAL train: there are squeals and squeaks, clangs and clanks, the clickity-clack of steel wheels passing over joints and switch points - NONE of this occurs on model railroads. Many of the rolling stock has plastic wheels - there are NO sounds. (Well, few sounds.) Why do manufacturers not produce a sound car - or sounds that represent the passing of a REAL train: I mean, stand beside a REAL train, and often, the squeals of steel on steel make you cover your ears - nothing like this exists on these wonderful model railroads. The sounds from the power units aren't great at best, but there is an attempt by manufacturers - manufacturers have missed, totally missed the sounds associated with rolling stock. Ok, well I get it, these wonderful railroads are the product of the owners or a club's cumulative thoughts and dreams - I get it, but an operating model railroad, to me, well I want to see tracks, track, and more tracks: I want to see turnouts, sidings, loop to loop, end to end, I want to see action - I don't care about these megacity additions to model railroads: to me, they are a distraction and detract from the RAILROAD. I want train action! Now a note directed to the manufacturers: we WANT SCALE metal WHEELS and scale wheel flanges - METAL - no more plastic nonsense. We want SCALE TRACK - SCALE wood and concrete ties. This is 2020 I believe: we want WiFi color cameras in the cabs of power units - imagine operating a train with an operational view from the cab - watch on a computer, on a tablet - imagine how NEAT this would be. Now, watch the rolling stock on these trains: they wiggle and wobble, they go into vibrational stress shakes - How about creating rolling stock with WEIGHT! Sure, I'm all about SCALE, but it's so unrealistic to see these cars act in a so unrealistic manner - which is a result of NO WEIGHT. ADD some weight to the rolling stock! Now, manufacturers - start adding graffiti and aging and dirt and perhaps a little damage to the rolling stock: it's nearly impossible to see rolling stock today, without graffiti and dirt, rust, and a little damage - these model railroads are a JOKE: every piece of rolling stock, most power units are brand new - it's ridiculous! My final thought relates to speed: most model railroads have issues with the length of rail from point A to point B. Therefore to create the vision of distance, we hide rail and run the trains slowly; here's my beef! Do these club and privately owned railroad owners hire Mario Andretti slot car racers to control a power unit? What's with this? I see trains running at break-neck speeds - WTF? Throw these clowns OUT - let them build their own indy 500 train race tracks - so many of these great model railroads, operate trains at speeds which are a JOKE - a total JOKE. Realism, slow it down, make it real. Enjoy the journey, enjoy the environment - race car drivers - BU@@@GG@@@ER off! Someone at these huge costly layouts needs to throw these fools OUT! Just 1 opinion; no disrespect intended. Oh yes, manufacturers, up your game - model railroading is a dying hobby: young people are NOT motivated to get into the hobby - as it is now, so much is toy-like and rather funny. Come on manufacturers: up your game before the hobby and your income are DEAD.

Yes, I was intending to include the M&K junction engine house. If you read Roberts book, this structure has quite a history. It was expanded with the coming of diesels to M&K. This is the engine house. I would have modeled. Unfortunately, I have been forced to abandon this layout, and I have given it away. The engine house still exists (at least the last time I was at M&K). My album on the West End, has several photos of the engine house: tnt53.rrpicturearchives.net/archiveThumbs.aspx?id=15602

I’m currently doing two rail. My dream is a modern era proto48 layout. There’s a big problem though, I’m young. I mean it too, I don’t have a job. I have sources of income but O scale is expensive. The first car I got in two rail was a southern railway caboose I converted from three rail, just to see what it would look like. I loved it. My dad has a really big three rail O scale layout but he doesn’t really like scale because he can fit more trackage with tighter curves. I grew to dislike that and now I’m a detail freak, which explains why I love proto48.
