Comparing Good And Bad Gambesons

  • I compare two sets of padded armour I have and why one's much better than the other. The two jackets include one Axel Petterson SPES jacket. It looks at what specifically makes such gambeson armours better or worse rather than simply comparing them to completely different types of armour.

    My main concern with buying gambersons and chain mail is figuring out which brands/models are intended to be functional vs cosplay toys.

    I am making my own Gambeson and the arms are next. I really appreciated the information. I should be able to limit "fighting my armor" that my buddies say is always a thing in combat. I'd like to prove the adage wrong.

      Good, because decent armour shouldn't be too difficult to move in. It is possible!

    Wonder if you can wear such a gambeson in daily life today. You'd never know if anyone would try to gut you in a back alley and try to get away with your coin purs.. i mean wallet.

      I wear my gambeson to work every day and they all seem to assume it's just an ordinary winter coat.

      Spes do some very nice sparring gambesons. Apart from that there are others, but look for designs with pre-bent arms and variable padding (lighter on the forearms, up to heaviest on the torso).

    Very nice, good analysis too. I'm working on making a gambeson from scratch, so to speak, and designing it without an actual pattern. Insightful points about the slightly bent arms. Thanks!

    Fascinating. It seems the main difference is the tailoring and puff upper sleeves.

    • @MedievalGenie
      @MedievalGenie  Год назад

      The puffy sleeves less so, but definitely the angled arm design is a strong factor.

    the good gambeson is not a historical one cuz its just a hema gambeson not a historical reeanactment one

    • @MedievalGenie
      @MedievalGenie  6 лет назад +3

      There are also good quality reenactment gambesons based on museum examples with some features I mentioned in the video.

    I doubt you’ll see this, but I have been dying to wonder how protective a SPES made “modern” Gambeson is for things like “cuts” versus an old school style Gambeson. I’m new to the world of armor and blade based protection and wonder if modern day builds and materials are more, less, or equally as protective as the older styles.
    Hopefully my question makes sense, I appreciate your channel’s information.

    • @MedievalGenie
      @MedievalGenie  5 лет назад

      Actually I do see this, so here's my answer:
      The design for the most part is deliberately similar to the historical version to replicate the experience and because it worked, so no need to reinvent the wheel. That said, there are some smaller changes made like a velcro-attached collar to protect the neck (to go with a gorget) as well as a zip or two on the front, which is more secure than using buttons. The usage of cotton rather than linen or wool is another difference.

      @@MedievalGenie wow! Thank you so much for answering. I really appreciate it. So does it seem to provide the similar amount of cut protection then?
      Again, thanks for taking the time to explain.

      modern protective clothing always has the potential to be superior. Some gambesons are more protective than others, hard to make comparisons between 'gambesons' and one type of jacket.

    • @7dayspking
      @7dayspking 5 лет назад

      @@MedievalGenie I don't necessarily think Spes jackets are designed exactly like or even meant to simulate real historical gambesons. I think they're modern convenient protective clothing. Different needs in a jacket for hema than they had 600 years ago and different expectations.

    can you wear a gambeson OVER a chainmail haubergeon for example?
    I might have difficulties finding a fitting gambeson that fits between me and my chainmail shirt size M.

    • @MedievalGenie
      @MedievalGenie  3 года назад

      You can, indeed wearing padding over armour was not unheard of historically.
      Please bear in mind that padding UNDER the armour is fairly important though, even if it is thinner to fit.

    Anyone have recommendations on the best place to get medieval clothing (1150-1335AD) for men (English), women (Iberian) and children that also doesn't look out of place in the modern world?
    I was thinking that footwear like the following could suit (whilst not necessarily being perfect)
    Men: Sandals, Espadrilles, Ropes Sandals, Empire Sandals, Leather Thongs, Menorcan Sandals, Gladiator Sandals, Clogs, Monk Strap, Moccasins, Woven Sandals, Suede Loafer, Chukka Boots, Chelsea boots, Plimsolls, Cuban Heel Chelsea Boots, Chukka Desert Boot, Driving Shoes,
    Women: Strappy Tie-up Sandals, Knotted Suede Toe Post Sandal, Cross Strap flat sandals, Raffia double strap slide sandals, woven leather tie leg sandal, Mules, Clogs, Over the Knee Boots, Ballet Flats, Lace Up Knee High Boots, Stirrup Boots, Slouch Boot, Desert Lace Up Shoes, Cuban heel western Chelsea boot with buckle detail.
    Likewise, Quilted Clothing (like Quilted Sweatshirt, Quilted Puffer Coat, Quilted Coat, Quilted Tracksuit Pants, Quilted Tracksuit Top, Quilted Jumper) could suffice for Civilian Gambeson.
    I’m also thinking that Tunics (Knee, Cocktail, Midi or Maxi Length), Leggings, Tights, Long Sleeved V Neck Shirt, Tank Top, Henley Shirt, Track Pants, Hoodie, T-Shirt with Notch Neck, Driving Gloves, Suede Gloves, Leather Gloves could be used.
    Correct me if I’m wrong.
