For people who don't do armored combat and are just larpers looking for some good information there's a lot of good information here. But bear in mind for lighter larps the biggest thing is pay attention to the same materials. You don't want cotton poly blends for LARPing either so surprisingly a lot of people have been using moving blankets dying them and sewing them into gambesons to a surprisingly good effect

I would love to get into this sport. My wife thinks I'm nuts. I'm 59 years old, and have had several back surgeries so its probably not gonna happen. I would want a pretty thick gambeson. I may have to just be a spectator. I live in Logan, and will have to go to see your events. I played football, and wrestled in High School. I was a Cop, and was darn good at fighting. Until I took on two big Tongans one night. I got them both in handcuffs; but screwed up my back in the process. I would definatly be a tank.

After considering the material cost and price increase from relatively niche demand, you’d probably rival that of the steel armor it would be under, unfortunately

I really appreciate this video. I was honestly going to just order a Gambeson off of Amazon.
But these gambesons in the video are all made to combat blunt weapons correct? How many layers would you want if you were trying to be protected from sharp weapons? If I do get armor it will probably be mail. But I’m hoping a gambeson would suffice in a self defense scenario.
I want a warm winter jacket that can double as protection from sharp objects.

    • @saltlakecitycrusaders9811
      @saltlakecitycrusaders9811  2 года назад +1

Realistically you'd need a super thick gambeson to even possibly stop a proper sharp weapon. Something like a 4 layer which would never be realistically worn and at that point is now pretty similar in thickness and strength to one of those attack dog training sleaves.

@@saltlakecitycrusaders9811 modern problems call for modern solutions I suppose. A hoodie made from Kevlar or Dyneema would make for a better garment to protect against knives. Would be interesting to see a gambeson made with Kevlar. Thanks for the response!

One question that I now have is, how do you deal with compleatly soaked and muddy gambesons? You mentioned that washing it (even in cold watet) isn't recommended. But where I live it is often raining and the ground is completely soajed and muddy.
I am very new to bohurt/hema so i am still trying to learn as much as possible before getting any gear.
Anny advice would be greatly appreciated :)
    Kind regards
    Adrian Scheffler

It depends on the materials, but generally hand washing and line drying the old-fashioned way is the way to go.

Frequently places will make gambesons to exact tailored measurements. Stock ones you'll just have to do you best guess. The places listed in our gambeson video description will do full tailored customs ones for you

Anyone have recommendations on the best place to get medieval clothing (1150-1335AD) for men (English), women (Iberian) and children that also doesn't look out of place in the modern world?
I was thinking that footwear like the following could suit (whilst not necessarily being perfect)
Men: Sandals, Espadrilles, Ropes Sandals, Empire Sandals, Leather Thongs, Menorcan Sandals, Gladiator Sandals, Clogs, Monk Strap, Moccasins, Woven Sandals, Suede Loafer, Chukka Boots, Chelsea boots, Plimsolls, Cuban Heel Chelsea Boots, Chukka Desert Boot, Driving Shoes,
Women: Strappy Tie-up Sandals, Knotted Suede Toe Post Sandal, Cross Strap flat sandals, Raffia double strap slide sandals, woven leather tie leg sandal, Mules, Clogs, Over the Knee Boots, Ballet Flats, Lace Up Knee High Boots, Stirrup Boots, Slouch Boot, Desert Lace Up Shoes, Cuban heel western Chelsea boot with buckle detail.
Likewise, Quilted Clothing (like Quilted Sweatshirt, Quilted Puffer Coat, Quilted Coat, Quilted Tracksuit Pants, Quilted Tracksuit Top, Quilted Jumper) could suffice for Civilian Gambeson.
I’m also thinking that Tunics (Knee, Cocktail, Midi or Maxi Length), Leggings, Tights, Long Sleeved V Neck Shirt, Tank Top, Henley Shirt, Track Pants, Hoodie, T-Shirt with Notch Neck, Driving Gloves, Suede Gloves, Leather Gloves could be used.
    Correct me if I’m wrong.

    • @BeatonArmaments

Honestly with hot weather. All I can suggest is drinking lots of water. No matter what you wear, its going to be hot. But I personally would do at least two layers

for reference, it's an old customer's trick to just spray straight vodka on clothes to get rid of any smell so I'll hazard a guess and say no. the important bit is killing the bacteria, the smell is a bonus.

Saying that fibres such as polyester do not wick moisture away is somewhat inaccurate. Most outdoor 'technical' clothing is made from fabrics containing polyester or polypropylene (micro) fibres.

A 140 pound longbow would put you on your arse even if it didn’t kill you. And as the french discovered; a pavise is the way to deal with arrows, not armour.
