    Awesome video! I just wanted to say that Falcions, Messers, Sabres, and Cutlasses were basically very high quality machetes. Falcions were used to carve up meat, basically soldiers that were wearing only gambesons or that had exposed arms and legs. Falcions can't go through steel armor whether it is chainmail, brigandine or full plate armor.

    Man, I'm from alabama and recently have been dreaming of getting into armored combat. You guys make things so simple and fun to understand. There is one HEMA gym near me that i will visit soon, but doubt i will be able to pursue armored combat anytime in the near future. You guys need to keep doing what you're doing with only a few tweaks on quality. Otherwise yall do great and are a large inspiration to me and the small group that has found your channel home. Thanks yall, i also wanted to ask, could you use two, single-handed weapons? If so, how affective would that be? Also, samurai or similar western warriors, how feasible is that style in the sport and is it at all affective. (I imagine it wouldn't be considering that samurai would use their katana to slide through and under plated armor and slice or peirce their opponent) ❤

      The middle one of the video, Jacob, fights in a Samurai kit. It works well. It maybe not quite as protective as some of the Western kits, but he's fast and light and can pack a punch with any weapon. He's really good about controlling the battlefield and picking favorable fights.

    I am new and mace has been good to me for grappling and boxing but I am thinking about keeping it as a sidearm and switching to a hand and a half axe for my primary. The buckler is also my thing, dishing out punches and being able to see while blocking has been pretty handy at practice and tryouts. The drawback sounds accurate, not super effective defense, especially against polearms. I am heading to my first regionals tournament this June.

    It's funny that the axe featured was called a "short axe", when it's long enough to two-hand often. It's a battle axe or war axe, for sure. When I hear short axe, I think throwing axe or camp hatchet.
    I guess it's all relative to the context. Those kinds of literally small axes must not even rate in armored combat.
    I would want an axe beard that reaches further out from the haft to wrap around limbs and pull better. Hook an ankle or a knee then shieldbash, and drop 'em!

    • @texasbeast239

    • @saltlakecitycrusaders9811
      @saltlakecitycrusaders9811  2 года назад +1

      Great question. So well made long swords bend to ensure they dont shatter which makes it more difficult to grapple with. You absolutely are able to half sword which is one of the only things that makes a long sword semi usable in mass fights. But stabbing was absolutely essential to killing opponents with the longsword so taking that option out really neuters the effectiveness of the Longshore in team melee battles

    • @matthewrussell4343
      @matthewrussell4343 2 года назад +1

      @@saltlakecitycrusaders9811 True, since thrusting isn't allowed, it kinda neuters it, but at the same time though, those swords are used more as a back up weapon when something happens to your primary weapon so in that sense it would a good "oh shit" handle and you could pin down and opponent while your buddies pain him out.

    12:21 ummm no... They were specifically designed to chop up poor unarmored rubble xD
    Unarmored as in no metal parts.
    Think of a falchion as a machete, but not as thin and flimsy.
    The reason its popular in buhurt is its point of balance being more forward than your typical sword, so more mass presence, just like any other buhurt weapon really (also cause its made thicker and blunt)
    Striking any form of metal armor with a real, sharp falchion will ruin your edge pretty quickly, if not immediately...
    Also, the kind of bashes you guys do would leave most medieval swords bent, broken or the edge ruined, not just the falchion.
    With the exception of those dueling monstrosities that vaguely resemble swords, some of which aint even sharp. Now those things look like they came out of buhurt :D
    They were, after all, designed to be used in armor, against armor.
    Somebody should look into those lol

    If a long sword was never that effective they would have never used it in combat. Sure no blade was really that great at using against a full armored knight which is why they used the point to stab into the weak spots. Which obviously you can't stab in this sport and for good reasons. But long swords and great swords can help counter your attackers balance and disarming them. It's not always about stopping power cause let's face the facts that short sword don't have stopping power and hitting the weak points is only as effective as long as you are good at hitting them.

      To my knowledge, by the late medieval era longswords were generally secondary weapons to a polearm or greatsword of some type, I think. They wouldn’t pack the same punch because they didn’t need to as much- mordhau was there when needed & half swording was good of course, as we both know- the greatsword thing is right, though. They definitely worked.
