This screen is a must have if you want a oem shell. I jave a funnyplaying gbc and this cgs drop in gbc. I love both, but the original size just feels more "correct". Mine sort of shoes some horizontal lines on certain colours, does yours?
I am still puzzling between those 2 mods.. I like funnyplaying one because of slight larger LCD size. now you are saying it does not feel like 'correct' ? even if you use some scanline-like display filter ? also.. if you used funnyplaying shell.. what is the quality of it if you compare to OEM shell, which I prefer ? I would chosen funnyplaying if it does not requires its own brand shell.. but I am curious now that what you are saying. any thought of input would be appreciated. thanks.
Is there a video where you talk about what temperature you have your iron at? And if you change it depending on the tip? I'm always scared to just slap it on there like at 4:17
So don't use the spacer for the screen secure, and just move it up and right towards the power LED like a normal screen was then? Also if to use Kapton Tape, just slap that on top of the circuit board that hugs the GBC motherboard?
Mix gold and silver mica powder in tan paint the Mario paint tan hex code mix in both and then air brush the paint I think that would be the “closest” you will get to the original color. A little trick I learned from who knows where.
thanks I got one of the gameboys at a garage sale for $2 but it was missing the battery cover and had scuffs. I have tried a few things for the color but its never quite right. i will try this!
Hi. The power consumption of 2.6'' FunnyPlaying IPS is much higher than 2.45'' TN? And one more question - Minimum brightness on the FunnyPlaying screen is much higher than 2.45'' TN?
Thanks for this video. I have a Daiei Hawks GBC I want to modify but no cut up the shell. This is perfect. I bought one and used your code so you get some credit.
I noticed after installing mine after a few minutes of playing I'm getting some pretty obnoxious speaker noise happening even when the volume is all the way down. Anyone experienced this?
The link you posted states it is a TN LCD screen. I don't believe that is the same as an IPS screen, which they also do sell. I'll admit I don't know the difference, so maybe someone can clarify in case I am incorrect.
Thank you for pointing that out. According to the original listing, this is actually a TFT screen. I guess I just assumed that it was IPS because it looks a lot better than my other TFT screen mod. I will do some more research and make a formal correction in a pinned comment.
@gerenocidiac I did some research and from what I could find online, everyone says something different unfortunately. From what I know about TFT, TN, and IPS, I believe this is an IPS display. IPS displays have great viewing angles and the others do not. This screen has great viewing angles just like the funnyplaying screen that I know is IPS. And comparing it to another mod I have that I know is a TFT screen, this screen blows it out of the water. Based off of those comparisons, I strongly believe that this IS an IPS display. Hope this helps!
@@JakeSimmons Glad you looked into that and checked it out. Would be nice if you happen to own another handheld that you know for a fact is using an IPS to see it side by side. However, for many people, the benefit with IPS along with the brightness is not having to hold the screen at a super specific angle to see it the best. If you are claiming you held it next to a TFT screen and this one is vastly superior and the viewing angles do not drop off the brightness/contrast sharply at wide angles, it certainly sounds to me like it's an IPS. Would be awfully good if the website would indicate that, or, if it is indeed different from an IPS screen, if they would instead elaborate on how good a TN screen is vs TFT and compared to IPS. There is so much info out there that it takes a lot of attention to notice the little details.
My screen just came in today but there was no cable included or attached to the ribbon cable. Suggestions? The ribbon cable that was sent also doesn't look exactly the one in your video or on the website so I don't exactly know where to solder it for power.
yo, this looks sick. gonna do this to my berry red gbc when i get the chance. also, does the pressure of the screen and the motherboard cause the plastic to bulge and the lens to become unstuck? has happened with my dmg and gba ips kits but theyre both hispeedido kits and the dmg uses a repro shell. just wanted to know before i buy it :)
Just did this install and soldered the screen wire to the C pad. Its great but the top of the screen kinda glitches every now and then. Anyone know why this may be? 😅
They seem to have updated the kit. Try this one! retrogamerepairshop.com/collections/gbc-displays/products/game-boy-color-drop-in-2-45-ips-kit-with-osd?ref=2mtshggunf&variant=42806490136748
The simpler it is, the more overpriced it is.
Good, I have money. I'm a dumbass.
it was like under 50 dollars
Just completed this mod myself (first of any kind I’ve ever done) thanks to this video! Came out amazing. Thanks, Jake!
where did you end up getting the screen?
Purchased from Retro Game Repair Shop. However, at this moment, they appear to be out of stock 😢
ive been waiting for this
Im glad there is a drop in screen. I dont want to replace too much on my brothers gbc as it means a lot to me

How often do they restock this? Went to buy and unfortunately they’re out of stock
Could it not just be soldered to the positive battery terminal since that has a much larger solder point?
Is there a video where you talk about what temperature you have your iron at? And if you change it depending on the tip?
I'm always scared to just slap it on there like at 4:17
I keep it at 300°C for pretty much everything. If the solder isn’t melting then I kick it up to 350° tops
@@JakeSimmons ty!
Clicking on the link you provide it says this is a TN display, not IPS. That explains the brightness.
Maybe a dumb question idk, does this screen have a grid like the original screen?
Thank you for doing the 2.45 screen.

I've just bought a GBC and would love to do this but I'm poor and the IPS kit costs more than what i paid for the Gameboy.
Thanks for this video. I have a Daiei Hawks GBC I want to modify but no cut up the shell. This is perfect. I bought one and used your code so you get some credit.
I love all these old devices lol. Emulation devices have just taken over my desire to play retro games

My kit didn't include the small black wire, it is a pain to solder on that bronze board
My kit didn’t include the black wire either. I didn’t need to solder one on though. Just plugged the cables in and it came right on
What is the cheapes screen mod for a gbc besides the frontlight? Im good at soldeting but im collecting/modding on a budget
Besides a front light, it would be this or a TFT screen. You can get the cheaper from AliExpress if you don’t mind the wait
I have a lcd screen but it's a 24 pin. Any chance I can get that to work on my Gameboy Color?
What spray did you use for cleaning it ? What's that?
i know nothing about game boy mods but i never knew game boy color had motion controls. Is it part of the system or the game?
Motion controls were in a select few games and built in to the cartridge, not the system. Still super cool though!
Man used ur code for this exact screen thanks
What happens if you do not solder the wire?
The backlight would not turn on. I believe they just updated the kit to not need a power wire at all on AliExpress
@@JakeSimmonsI saw some kits like the ones you described on Ebay. 😮
Can you keep the old plastic lens with the new modded display?
I did! But only for drop in kits like this
@@JakeSimmonsnice, I still have my child purple gameboy color unmodded and wanted to keep it as oem as possible
So after about 16 hours of use, I now have a dead pixel. Any advice?
What are you using to mount the gbc pokemon game cartridges in the back?
Put the ribbon cables in backwards because I wasn’t paying attention and now it won’t turn on LOL

I bought this kit in Ali. Mine should be lcd
The new version is completely solderless. Also, yeah, had the same issue with the spacer.
Thank you! I installed mine last night and it had no power wire. Was extremely easy(and cheap)!
Why does it have a bar over the nintendo logo
I just bought one of these and used your promo code, thanks!

cool, thanks!
i used this screen as well and the spacer was also trash for me .
Do you need to solder?

I would reconnect all the cables. it usually cable connection problem(or power wire in rare case)
I just ordered this exact kit but it didnt come with the wire. Could there be a mistake?
I believe they updated it so it doesn't need one
is there any ips for dmg that doesnt need to trim shell?
The rips v5/v3 will only require a tiny bit of trimming 2 screw posts and one small other piece. Super easy with flush cutters
Linus Drop-In Tips
This seems insanely fiddly and difficult
Cool, finally, they just need to make OLED with lag equal to.a good IPS.
God bless.
tops demais 😎
Bummer. I was getting ready to watch the video and the screen is Sold Out. 😞

at this point, just get a GBA.
Some people like the form factor of a GBC over gba. This is a great mod for those people
@@SneakyDecoy72 I mean, the GBA SP exists
This is great . All the reproduction shells are pretty ugly
