I'd recommend finding a dune and playing in the sand all day. Sand was my nemesis till I went to the "Big Dune" near Amargosa and spent an entire day ripping it up. What worked for me was carrying reasonable amount of speed. The wheels act like gyroscopes and though they'll wiggle around a lot - the spinning action helps keep them upright as long as you're carrying speed, not a lot but consistent. Don't lean forward or back generally but find a neutral position and always standing on the pegs. Don't pin the throttle but never let it off - blips are good but never back to closed throttle. To stop, use the clutch. Any "throttle off" will cause the front tire to dive in and down you go. The biggest part of all this is to stand and let the bike wander underneath you as it finds its way - little inputs from the rider, mostly on the pegs, is all that is needed. I'm no expert but this is how I learned to love the sand.

Sound advice! One thing that's plentiful in these parts is...sand. I'll give this a go once the temps lower a bit! Appreciate it!

    DRock,
I hope this finds you, Jen and The Hound well. I have been watching you motorcycling Videos for a few months now. I created a You Tube account so that I could subscribe and help your channel out immensely. I really enjoy your videos as you show the true scope of motorcycle adventure, both the Chill moments and the ones that are most challenging as you are here in the sand. Thanks for keeping it real man. The wife and I are moving to West Virginia in a couple of years. I will probably get either the DR650 or the CRF300L to explore the dirt roads of the Mountain State. Your videos are not only inspirational but instructive as to how to go about it. Stay safe out there . Rick

We've all been there, bro! Don't beat yourself up too much about the sand. It takes a lot of practice in the deep stuff before you feel confident in it. You inadvertently did what you're supposed to do when you bury your back wheel in the sand. It's best to put the bike over on its side and get the bike back up on top of the sand to propel yourself out. Unfortunately, the bike fell in the wrong direction, but that's a good piece of advice for you for next time you bury it. That sand pit in the Warner Valley is a really good place to work on your sand skills when you do head out that way! That's where I did most of my sand practice when I was honing in my skills. I tend to almost always have 2 fingers on the clutch too, so I can feather the friction zone and add and take away power as needed, too. That's another little helpful tidbit, but oftentimes in the sand, you do just kinda have to send it and keep the revs up in first gear on these bikes.
You're fortunate you've got those D-sports on there, because the stock tires wouldn't have done jack squat! haha. Keep up the good work, dude! I always enjoy your adventures.

Yup, been doing a lot of learning lately. Both my Moto and my body can attest to that! Pretty much every track I tried on this trip lead into deep sand. I'll have to get out to Warner Valley sooner rather than later to work on some skill building for sure!! Appreciate you watching and words of encouragement!

@@precipiceofgrind I've wanted to check a lot of those trails out too. Unfortunately, I'm never down that way on the dual sport, since it's just a bit too much of a ride from Cedar City. I never wanted to do them bad enough to either do the iron butt ride to get down there, or trailer it/throw it in the back of the truck. The furthest down there and back I've ridden was from Cedar, over to Beryl down through Veyo, Gunlock, Hwy 91, across the dirt through Cedar Pocket and back up from the Gorge all the way to Cedar on I-15. That was a super long day and once I started getting blown around, it really lost its appeal.
Even today, I took a dual sport ride from Cedar over to Enterprise and took the dirt track out to Panaca and back to Cedar on 56. I was getting blown around like crazy almost the entire way and I was really kicking myself that my ambition got the best of me, lol. Obviously, I lived to tell the tale, but a lot of these ideas sound much better when looking at the satellite map instead of in reality, haha.

@@gibsonrocker17 That's exactly why I cut through the Mojave backway, the wind was tossing me around. Unfortunately the CRf300 gets blown around just like the XT250 did. Really wish I had a wind screen on it!

Deep sand is tough. When I used to ride, my strategy was to stand, ride as fast as I reasonaly could and put my weight over the back wheel so the front would skim over the sand. But that was with a motocross bike.

Pack a air compressor and lower air pressure when in sand.

Rode out to three corners from Mesquite about three weeks ago. A lot of it was in that deep sandy wash stuff. The group had plenty of those front wheel slide outs and fighting that sand wore us out.

The struggle is real sometimes that’s why you really got to check the conditions before you enter the questionable trails when by yourself 👍🤟

Always thought the name of this town was ironic, seems like the last place you’d find a beaver! Did you ride through the gorge on the way down? That would be an interesting ride.
