    Never thought about using an external battery, might try that as I burn through batteries using that Sony for my vlog

      It's nice to record throughout the day and not have to worry about whether your battery is dead or not. Even more important when riding on a dirt bike when you don't want to stop and check it.

    That's pretty nice. I always worry about the crappy mount that came with my go-pro letting go, but that one is super duty and vibration free looking, and plus it gives a more eye level view of the ride... Exxxcellent! We will all be reaping the fruits of your labor as the new vids come out. :)
    Just be careful about hooking a branch or something while riding. You might want to bend the front into the helmet and fasten it so that can't happen. Looks like you could flatten a spot further back to fasten the camera, and would make it even more stable and accident proof.

    • @advsquared
      @advsquared  4 года назад

      I have had some mounts break but those were the cameras hanging off the bike. For a helmet mount this one works really well and does give you the point of view as if you're riding the bike. And hopefully this upgrade will mean I will never run out of power again!

      @@advsquared Oh, it's pretty awesome!
      Like I said, my main concern would be the hook hanging off the front. Most of your riding is in the mountains or desert, but if you go to the woods a stray vine could get hooked and snap your neck.
      If you flattened a spot further back or attached some kind of guard to the front I.d feel better.
      Just trying to have your 6, brother.

      @advsquared  4 года назад

      @@barking.dog.productions1777 You're right, I rarely ride where things will hook my helmet camera. It would be totally different in dense woods. I would have to change my whole setup.

    • @barking.dog.productions1777
      @barking.dog.productions1777 4 года назад

      @@advsquared Not really. Even just one fairly thin piece of aluminum that goes from the chin front over the outside tip of what you already have would guide any vines or branches around your current bracket instead of letting them get behind it.
      It's kind of like grip guards. You hope that you never need them, but if you hit a rock that throws your throttle hand gripping the handle bar directly into a boulder at 30 mph... it's a crushed hand and 6 months to recover.
      Murphy wrote a law about these kind of freak accidents.
      "If anything can go wrong it will."
      Look at the opening shot of the current video. Hook a vine or a branch with that, and it is a broken neck. There's no recovering from that. Even just riding too close to a canyon wall and hooking it on an out cropping would do it.
      2 rivets and a piece of flat aluminum bar stock would keep anything from getting hooked behind it... Besides it would stop any harmonic micro vibrations in your bracket that is not fastened at one end.
      I'll shut up after this....
      Maybe I can't see the design properly and it is just Velcro or something, but it looks like 1/8" bar stock aluminum riveted to your helmet. That is not just going to just break off - it is going to snap your head around backwards and kill you on the spot.
      I'll shut up now.

    • @advsquared
      @advsquared  4 года назад

      @@barking.dog.productions1777 No, the rivet you see is for the helmets chin strap. The camera is mounted with dual lock, a heavy duty type of velcro. It does breakaway when it is hit. I have knocked off my camera a couple of times when it is hit by me handlebar.

    • @advsquared

      I really don't like having cables running off the helmet to a battery so that's why I originally designed this setup. You really forget that it's there and it's never in the way. And with this new battery it's going to have crazy long recording times!

    really enjoyed your video. i made a similar cam mount but have despaired at the poor battery life. will investigate those parts.

    • @advsquared
      @advsquared  4 года назад

      Thanks! The battery life of any action camera always seems way to short. This setup is more than enough for a days ride without ever worrying about the battery dying.

    • @MrEtnorb
      @MrEtnorb 4 года назад

      ADVsquared a benefit of your video is that it inspired me to persevere with the Sony cam and it’s on/off button. It is in the right location but I don’t like the lack of positive feel when using gloved fingers. I glued a small rubber bumper onto it to give me a more positive feel of it. I might move the cam forward like yours. Can you hear if yours is working when you push the button? I have been using the superseded TCL SVC action cam, which has the best on/off switch ever invented. You slide it back and forth and it is very positive and you are never in doubt about it being on or off. Unfortunately, the TCL is not stabilised.

    • @advsquared
      @advsquared  4 года назад

      @@MrEtnorb I wear very thin mx type gloves so I can feel the button easily but gluing on a small bumper is a good idea. The camera doesn't make any noise when turning on or off but I can't remember if I turned the beep sounds off. I have a mirror on the handlebar that I use to see if the camera is on or off as I can see the red led on the front of the camera.

    Holy crap, this is a good setup, but man its a lot of work! I just bought an external power bank, and velcro'd it to my helmet. Your's is way more compact, though. Nice work!

    • @advsquared
      @advsquared  4 года назад

      Yeah it's been a pretty good system for me. For my helmet I always like something to be as small and light as possible so that's why I made this setup. It's really not that hard to make, getting all the parts is the pain.

  • @dashrides2679

    This is great. I've been meaning to add some type of external power setup to out kit. The gopros have HORRIBLE battery life. I love how you used a bare cell to keep the weight and size.

    • @advsquared
      @advsquared  4 года назад +2

      Thanks, this mod has been working great for me. The Sony cameras easily lend themselves to use external power. For a GoPro it gets a little tricky. Because these Li-ion battery cells are 3.7v you can't use them to plug directly into GoPro's USB C plug as that requires 5.2v. You could get 5.2v out of a 3.7v cell by using a Boost Board, like this one, www.adafruit.com/product/2030 , which would give you the 5.2v you need if you don't mind that there are more components and it would not be so compact. You could try and make your own 'dummy' battery adaptor to use a 3.7v cell to power internally but I am not sure if that adaptor would require a chip to talk to the GoPro to make it work. GoPro never makes anything easy!!

      The lens shade is a 3d printed part made my a guy from China. Unfortunately he no longer makes these and I haven't found anyone else that does. That big rectangle one Sony makes is huge! Time for me to design something that is small and will work.

    Great tip, I bought this set up after seeing your video a while back. With a 128 sd card I can run continuous for 11 hours on 1080 60fps. What microphone do you use? The mic is the last missing piece of the puzzle.

    • @advsquared
      @advsquared  4 года назад

      Wow, that's a long time! I thought maybe it would run about 8-9 hours but 11 is pretty impressive. I actually custom made my mic from a mini electret condenser mic I bought at an electronics store. I don't remember the specs on it, I made it a long time ago. But many inexpensive lapel microphones that would work well. Just make sure they have a foam cover AND use a dead-cat cover to reduce wind noise. You might try a couple mics and see which one sounds the best.

    I've done a side head mount myself (not for helmet though) and it turned out to be not very fine.

    • @advsquared
      @advsquared  4 года назад

      I haven't had any problems with my camera mount coming off unless it gets hit very hard, usually by the handlebar. I am not sure if you understand what I am using as you called it velcro. I am using 3M Dual-Lock. It is much stronger than regular velcro.

    I have a dual usb port clipped to my handlebars. I plug in my camera mounted on my helmet and plug in my garmin gps and both run off motorcycle battery. I have not tried the Sony yet because the gopro white 7 is doing really good. I am not sure if my Sony will record with external power. That is why I came to this video. If you know please reply.

    • @advsquared
      @advsquared  4 года назад

      Yes it will record with USB power plugged into the back of the camera with the stock battery installed. I could have powered the camera that way but I don't like having cords running from my helmet to the bike or backpack.
