People, If you want maximum performance out of the HDR-AS300 or FDR-3000 then use an SD card that is a minimum of 64MB and is an SDXC card. Cards less than 64MB don't come in SDXC. Also, in your camera menu choose HD XAVCS instead of MP4 video codec. You're welcome in advance.
Hello, I'm taking out the battery. I am connecting the motorcycle battery with a charging usb. Sometimes video is recorded, sometimes not. I could not figure it out.
Thanks for the great detailed video. The external power source feature is definitely not explained well in the official documentation. I messed around with it and figured I can take out the battery completely and power it with just external source. Surprisingly it does not let me record in this state to the card, but I can do other weird stuff like put out HDMI signal and capture it with capture card. This makes sense for livestreaming setup that I am experimenting with. Anyhow, thanks for putting this out, it really cleared a lot of things for me. Cheers!
I use it with an external battery all the time, I use a Power grip available at Amazon or any other external Power supply that you describe with a micro USB at one end and a regular USB at the other end I mount the camera on top of the Power Grip with a GoPro tripod mount and use a Go Pro mount with the tripod adapter, very handy I also use the Fleximic for the Oslo and extend it with a stereo jack to plug in and external mic it works perfect and better that the inboard mic, which is very good any way. Thanks Luidoly
doesnt the external batery afect the life of the battery? did you pay atention to how many volts it use in the transfer? i am asking cuz i dont want to damage the cam with extra volts. best regards
Good point, I guess you have to pick your battles. Do I want to have extra weight on the helmet and be recharging the external battery or do you want all the bratty wire routed to your USB 12v charger on the bike. Thanks and appreciate the quick reply. I pretty much have the same set up. Next I'm going to see if I can record audio using my Sena 20 and tether it to the X3000. Basically Video and Audio recorded while communicating via intercom of the Sena.
if i was to use this on a motorcycle hooked up to the bikes usb supply from the battery would it run all day ? also what the max size memory card can these ?
GREAT VID! THANKS. Questoon. Ive been trying to decide if I am going to buy this camera or not. and therefore I started reading its user manual. The manual states that charging stops once the camera is switched on. is that true? if yes thats kinda bad. because I was planning on powering it with a power bank. Question 2: Did anybody have an issue with the camera losing its focus after some months? or whenever heating up? Thanks
I use an external battery pack with mine. The charging does stop when plugged into external battery. The external battery lasts a long time. No issues with the focus of mine. It did get really hot once and stopped recording.
You can charge it with a power bank but you can't charge and record at the same time with a power bank. You can still run the camera recording with a power bank so your statement is a bit confusing.
Did you try removing the battery and see if the camera records only with the power bank? I worry the that battery will heat up do to camera long use. Thank you!
hayabusaTravels I have not had any focusing issues. The stabilization ability of this camera is amazing. Works perfectly for off-road motorcycle recording.
Just a FYI, almost all action cams and other cams work this way, some give you several options for when you plug them into a PC or laptop to Charge/Data Transfer or external power.
You will not be able to use the camera without the battery installed. The manual clearly states so. As soon as you try to press record the display will tell you that no battery is installed and wont record until you have a battery in the camera.
Quick question, I also ride a motorcycle and have a 12v outlet with usb charging ports, can I run this camera off my motorcycles usb ports? Also with 10 hours of battery life from say a 25000mah external pack, how long can you record in 4k using a 256gb microSD card?
A 256 Gibibyte card (all digital storage is normally listed with its Gibibyte value) has 250 Gigabyte storage. If you record 4K at 60Mbit/s (which equals 7.5 MB/s), you can fit over 9 hours on the card. If you record with 100Mbit/s (which equals 12.5 MB/s), you can fit around 5 hours and 30 minutes on the card.
I also have the X3000 and I have used a 20,000 mah external battery backup to record with and I have a couple of issues that happened. I did this twice on long bike ride and I was using my iPhone to control camera. Both times it stopped recording. First time it stopped at 1:31:00 and the 2nd it stopped at 1:39:00 I also did same at home and let it record but without using iPhone to control. It recorded for 3:20:00 until I manually stopped it. Is the USB power not available while connected to iPhone? I was actually going back and forth on my phone from Strava app to the Play Memories App and the latter would reconnect every time in a few seconds. So I am guessing that Play Memories was not connected for the most part. Any comments on that? Have you encountered anything similar? FYI, the camera had 3 lines visible on the battery icon after bike ride so I guess it was using USB power but for some reason, it stopped. Could not have been the heat as it was 18 degrees Celsius that day and always being cooled by the wind of my biking speed. Thanks for your time!
Guy Levesque Thanks for the comment. I do not control my camera with my phone. It may have something to do with needing an internet connection or consistent Bluetooth connection. That is just a guess. Maybe we will get lucky and someone will respond with a definite answer.
Thanks for Reply Chad! After further testing I figured out the issue. The X3000 heats up a fair bit when in use. Probably due to its small size. It recorded for 3 hrs and 20 min before I stopped it . But this was without using the WiFi to connect a phone as its remote. When I tried again with the WiFi, it got over heated after 50 min. This differs from my bike ride due to the cooling effect of the wind. Much longer on the bike. 1 hrs and 38 min. My next test will be with bike and no WiFi and that should result in as long as I want. I guess the WiFi generates more heat when being used.
That is good to know. I will keep that in mind especially when I am capturing those once-in-a-lifetime shots. I will leave the wifi setting disabled to prevent overheating. Thanks again for the reply and info.
I'm thinking of getting this camera and you answered some my questions. How do you like the camera? Do you still use it? Any reliability issues? What is the biggest sd card it can take as far as memory size?
Nice video, very helpful. Curious to the longest video you've recorded. I managed to get about 2.5 worth in one shot but since then, it has dwindled down to an hour. Need to check my settings I guess. Sure is a quirky camera to get used to but video quality is excellent.
Thanks for your time on this: in the end I was looking for a power supply that resulting in allowing me to use the record function while changing. No such thing huh?
I use this camera, various GoPro's including the 3,6 & 7 Black editions and a DJI Osmo. The FDR-X 3000 compared well against the GoPro 3 that suffered from the jello effect. The Osmo does a good job, but it is limited, always needs updates and takes too long to set up. The GoPro Hero 6 & 7 are the new kings with great picture quality, good reliability and they work well from external power sources (Just remember to take the battery out for the best results.) The X 3000 is not reliable on external batteries, with a tendency to overheat and turn off if set to 4K. I love Sony cameras, but this is not one of their best.
Recording while re-charging at the same time is possible, although the yellow light does not turn on. I do it while I'm driving and can record for more than 10 hours, depending on the capacity of microSDXC and also on recording mode.
What you are doing for 10 hours is using the external power source that you think you are charging with. The Sony manual clearly indicates that both cannot occur simultaneously.
Chad: I have a couple of power banks lying around and neighter of them allows me to record while charging. In fact the only thing that comes on my screen is the word USB and then everything disconnects. Any ideas?
Super detailed awesome. I just removed the door today from Everide and it was super easy. Is the reason you opted for external battery instead of trying to charge off your bike because it won't?
WADZ UP Thanks for the reply! I did not want to run a power cord from my helmet all the way down to the bike. Too many chances of it snagging on something.
Chad Goff forgot to thank you Chad totally makes sense I actually came back to your video to watch it a second time and forgot that I watched it the first time and then realize you already answered my question and I hadn't thank you LOL thanks buddy cheers
Hey Chad, I know the Sony has Bluetooth wireless but any idea if you are able to pair this camera with the Sena 20 intercom system? I tried today but had no luck. If anybody has tried I loved to hear if they had success or not. Thanks
I tried putting the Sena 20in configuration and then pairing mode and had no success pairing to the Sony which is a bit of a lunch box let down. There techs originally told me the Sena 20 could be hard connected to the Sena 20 but this is not correct. Good luck with your solution and if you find a work around or figure out things on your end I'd be curious how it played out. Cheers bud

Just found your channel, you’ve awesome I can now run my camera with external battery great video good info .
One problem with this it could cause the camera to run hotter than normal great in depth video most don't take the time to cover all the points
Run the camera in 1080p and it won't get as hot as 4K
@@jizzythefroggy1108 kind of pointless as I wanted the 4K resolution but have a work round now with air blowing across the body of the camera

Appreciate the video! Will start live streaming soon and was wondering if I needed to carry around multiple Sony batteries.

Thanks so much for a such a detail test of various power sources.
Glad you showed a lot of detail. Good video.
Hello,
I'm taking out the battery. I am connecting the motorcycle battery with a charging usb. Sometimes video is recorded, sometimes not. I could not figure it out.
Do you still have this camera?
If yes, is it still working great??
Yes, I still have the camera and it still works great.
@@chadgoff4878 great, can you tell me how long the battery las last on full charge ?
The stock battery lasts 40mins with the settings I use. 1080p, GPS off, bluetooth off, 60fps.
If your power supply says 2.0A it's ok as well. No worries about the .1A. TP-Link external batteries are great as an alternative.

256GB * 1024MB/GB = 263168MB (1GB = 1024MB) ; 100Mbit/s = 12.5MB/s (1B = 8bits) ; 1h = 3600s --> 12.5MB/s * 3600s/h = 45000MB/h ==> 263168MB / 45000MB/h = 5.84h = 5h 50Min

I tried mine with a Sennheiser MKE 400, there is no audio in the footage ?
Make sure you on;t have audio turned off in the camera menu.
Also, you might have a mic that requires it's own power source.
In short point: turn on usb-power, get a powerbank with 2A, stick it on you Window aaaand voila, you have a Sauron like dashcam.
You don't need a powerbank to do that, you can just get a USB cigarette lighter charge port.
