In today's video I'm jined once again by my friend Andy who's bought some more of his amazing vintage bubble gum card collection for us to have a look at. This time the theme is 1960's Spies and Sleuths and we feature sets from Danger Man, The Man From UNCLE, Girl From UNCLE, The Saint, The Champions and Sexton Blake. Included is a history of the series, interesting trivia, the wrappers, box art and premiums. I do hope you find it interesting.
Next time, we'll be taking a look at the 1960's Batman series!
Thanks once again to Andy for coming along to the studio with his collection.

Excellent. Sexton Blake has had a recent mini resurgence insomuch as the people behind 2000AD have issued a handful of new novellas.

Wonderful stuff! And a typically superb production with expert commentary, resourceful supplementary images and all around compelling presentation. It doesn’t hurt that the subject is near and dear to my heart, but wow us poor spy craze kids in 60’s America had no idea how much we were missing out on in jolly old. 🤩

Thanks my friend, really glad you enjoyed this one. Filming the Batman special tomorrow, should be fun! The spy craze really was something back in the 60's👍

Good video - in terms of memorabilia for The Champions there is also the comic strip that ran in the Joe 90 comic and was also featured in the Joe 90 Top Secret annual, the Italian compilation movie had a locandina poster, a fotobusta set of 8 posters and various other size posters, there are 10 Spanish comic books too. The French paperback was printed twice with different covers. There are also a number of TV listings magazines from around the word with The Champions on the cover including TV Herald (USA), TV Times and TV Week (Australia), Tele Radio and Tele Programma (Spain). There is also Stuart 'The Champion' Damon's LP. Don't forget the two-reel super8 cut down version of The Beginning from Techno Film. There is also the usual ITC gatefold glossy publicity brochure (UK and US versions), the accompanying publicity book, the catalogue card in the ITC Entertains The World catalogue (1972), the double sided promo card for Legend of The Champions (1981) and quite a bit more.

@@JulesBurt The Saint cards also came out in Denmark at a slightly different size. There are 15 colour Saint cards produced by Monty Gum - these were part of a set that included other 60s TV series. Shame your friend didn't show The Persuaders! set produced by Monty Gum cards in The Netherlands.

    • @JulesBurt

Hi Jules & Jaz - great info about the Champions, I'd never heard of the Spanish comics ! I do have The Persuaders! set (about which Jaz has written a great book, folks) - didn't include it in the 60's Spies and Sleuths video as the cards were issued in the early 1970s. I forgot to mention the Danish version of the Saint set; the Monty Gum cards date to 1966, numbers 1 to 16 of their 2nd numbered TV series which also featured Thunderbirds, Zorro, The Fugitive, Love On A Rooftop and Mission Impossible.

It's mentioned that there is a fifth Girl From UNCLE British paperback. I only know of four. Can you confirm the existence of the fifth, perhaps with a title? I would have to hunt it down for my collection. Thanks.
