I don’t wanna come up as having holier than thou attitude, but to understand this tutorial you first need to understand how paint layers, opacity, and the few brushes work first. I recommend watching David Revoy’s vid on shading (at least the preparation part) to get an idea of how all this shading works.

You don't know how much this video helped me to overcome my fear for semi realistic approach. Thanks a lot . Looking forward for more tutorials like this ❤❤
In the full video he talks more about how he learned this from a video on a Chinese video streaming site, but he clearly misunderstood. It would make sense to add a highlight if there were another light source. But since he doesn’t realize that the one he drew makes no sense. He just saw another artist do it without understanding why, which is important. It would make it more dynamic but because he doesn’t understand why it works I don’t think he was able to recreate it very well. He also talked in his video about this info being some secret he found, when in reality this information (triangle shapes, lighting the back of the hair and around the face, etc.) is in almost every anime hair coloring tutorial to exist regardless of streaming site.
Also wanted to add that lightning the back of the hair is not to make the drawing look more ethereal it’s because hair is not that thick and if there is a light behind it some of the light will show through.
Light can go over Shadow depending on the Light Source. It Makes sense in this one because it can be That the Light is only Reaches Certain Parts of the Shadow. Also just Enjoy the Video. He Can do what his Wants.
Finishing touches: 1) Until now, your main light was mostly airbrush while the "cell-shading" was done exclusively for the shadows. Add some light in that same style around the places that should be lit by the main light source, as a light layer with very low opacity. Now you also have a nice "block" of lighted area giving it a neater look. 2) Add some ambient highlights by using a very light color and drawing a line around the inside of the lineart, as if the character was being lit from behind. This light should only be there to spice it up, you have your main light to be on the spotlight. Any bright color works, but you should choose one that matches the background (probably brighter tho) 3) Now that you have finished, you can change everything at once by adding some layers. The best ones for this are superposition and burn, since you, most likely, want to change the contrast a bit. Edit: This is what i could understand from the ending, apparently there is a video about this very topic on this channel lol but i dont want to feel like i wrote all of this for nothing
When I watched the video, I literally was so thankful for this tutorial, it was geniunely so simple, and the product looked wayyyy better than I could do on my own. Thank you for translating!

the highlights are absolutely wrong here in absolutely wrong direction physically xD but aside from this it looks decent.
Where is the light source? Yes
Thought that too, the shadows and highlights make no sense, and shadows are inconsistent too
This is actually a amazing tutorial! Thank you so much!!!

why are you putting the highlights on the shadow part of the form??
