this is so cool. i wonder if the original artists planned it so meticulously or did they follow their instinct and years of experience to achieve such beautiful compositions? you improved so much on the last example, it's truly amazing
I think they followed their instinct and ended up analysing and planning it too. I unknowingly learned all the things the video talks about by seeing and analysing what looked wrong with my drawings and tried to keep that in mind the next time I drew. I didn't know composition was a thing but the process of learning was very similar and I ended up doing it just following my instincts. I did learn a bit about the why and stuff from the video though that I wouldn't have been able to describe why it looked better
a lot of them definitly did not just paint with their instinct. We know for sure that a lot of artists followed the guide lines on compositions. Those theories are really old and the further you go in art history the more you can see how many principles artists found over the years.
one of my favorite artists, chris hong, who has an youtube channel, talks about her process in some of her videos. It seems her decisions are very deliberate, based in years of studying. I do feel some do it naturally, though. I remember seeing interviews with Kim Jung Gi and I think he couldn't very well explain why he made his illustrations in the way he did. He just had a natural composition instict. may he rest in peace
usually whenever i watch an art tutorial on youtube, they just repeat information ive heard a thousand times. this video has genuinely taught me so much
Neat video, I feel like many artists (including myself) often prioritize making a pretty well drawn artwork which usually causes us to forget about composition and even storytelling. Would love to see you talking more in depth about such important aspects. Getting a bit off topic here, but the lack of these two aspects (Composition and storytelling) are the reason why most if not all AI generations look so dull, sure the generation can be pretty but lifeless at the same time.
The AI looks good when paired with photography that utilizes good composition. There is a photographer who uses AI to add everything from characters to cloths and setting but he builds the images around a reference he has photographed and edits them to look more seamless. It's actually pretty beautiful.
Wow, that's a very informative video! I feel like youtube has been lacking some technical, in detail art tutorials that actually tell you how to tackle a particular subject. Thanks a lot and please keep creating more content! I will probably have to rewatch this to make sure I understand things fully
This is amazing! i can see the effort you've put into the video and the improvement between the two peices is actually insane, awesome work and thank you for posting!
As a self taught artist who hasnt been able to practice due to school. It's nice to see this be in my recommendation, maybe once i finish this year, I'd be able to focus more and practice it again. This gave me enough motivation to remind myself why i study art even though i'm taking engineering. Thanks man, good luck on your journer in studying and to those who read this as well ❤.
You say you're self-taught, yet this is one of the best methods of teaching art I've seen on youtube; at least for me. There is a clear outline, it's no-nonsense, and you're giving so many fantastic examples while citing proof/more references for us to look into. It feels like I've found a gold mine, and a gr8 vid to turn back to when I'm feeling lost in my journey. I'm looking forward to learning more from you, fellow self-taught artist! Thank you for sharing your journey with us!!!
This is amazing! You really did your work, I was a self-taught artist for 8 years but have the luxury of majoring art in college now, and many of the things you mentioned have been taught to me. My professors always stress the importance of compositions and often make us work with the Gestalt Principles. This is really informative, I'm sure you've inspired many artists!!
It's so so so refreshing to see a tutorial that gives really good advice and show improvement while not having the most perfect technique. It makes your point stand out even more
Thank you so much!! I almost teared up because I finally found the reason why I felt lost when I draw and the reason why I hardy made any progress! I love the way you explain, so simple yet so effective and straight to the point. This is an amazing video!! Thank you so much!!
one of the only videos ive seen where the art doesn't look already godlike enough for the tutorial to be completely useless when they provide examples and feels like it was made by someone who is genuinely improving and shows passion in said topics. this is truly the most 'beginner friendly' tutorial I've ever seen. i applaud you for making this video despite your skills not being fully polished yet, it shows that you're confident in your art and that you'll improve no matter what.
This is one of the best videos on composition I’ve ever seen. I’ve studied most of the individual techniques separately, but when I stare at my page I struggle to understand how they connect together. You created a blueprint on breaking down and combining the techniques. This is fantastic and I can finally see how the puzzle pieces fit together. Thank you.
This is the exact video I needed for my art to improve. When I upload my work on social media, I get likes and compliments for my coloring. But there are often artists who are actually good commented about how my composition is badly designed though I tried to create a "scene" by drawing backgrounds. I tried to learn composition through Pinterest, but there are always lines of shapes that people draw but never really explained why. This video essay is really easy to follow & understand. Thank you so much for creating this.
ive been stuck for months with my artwork. Composition is also a skill, and it is to me the most confusing and difficult to grasp, because it's the most abstract of the other rules in art imo, everything else has sensible concrete patterns but composition is so broad. You literally simplified such a complicated topic that I've been trying to understand but never could. Thank you SO much. Ur actually a lifesaver
The way you offered many unique tips i've rarely heard of, it really interests me to the highest degree. I had similar problems of having decent art, but it all ends up feeling boring or too stiff. It makes me excited to try out that main theme/sub theme exercise to see how fast i can improve my works! Thank you so very much for sharing this to the world. It's awesome watching fellow artists improve themselves with so much passion!
So glad this popped up on my feed! I also love Buchi Qoo's art. This is the first composition vid that hasn't just been rule of thirds and actually helped me understand shapes (Big Medium Small) a lot more!
I had a similar problem where I learned perspective and value and then stagnated for years. I am now trying to catch up with composition and color, and your videos are very helpful. Thank you so much
I think this video sparked an idea of what has been missing from my work lately. I've been feeling like what I've been doing is boring, not evolving, having no value, but I couldn't put my finger on it. Practical application will be a challenge, but I need to get away from just drawing banal characters in empty space and think hard about composition... glad I stumbled across this.
This is everything I've ever needed and more! This is exactly what I've been struggling with in my art for ages now, and you've explained it and taught it in such a digestible way! THANK YOU!! I'm so excited to watch your other videos !!
10 years into drawing, now that the flame is almost extinguished I suddenly felt like watching your video and learn. Couldn't understand half of it but my brain still tells me "yo that's the deal, that's the thing you should be practicing!!!"
I learned how important composition is when I took storyboarding class. Things like tangents and other various compositions errors never cross my mind before that. Now I always start my sketches with thumbnails and draw simple lines to find a good composition.
Thank you for the video! It was very informative. Fun fact: you explained what composition is in two seconds. When I was attending art school years ago no one could give me a clear answer to what composition is for 4 years...
even as someone who's been drawing for six years, these kinds of videos are extremely helpful! your colors and understanding of shapes improved so much in just two drawings. keep going and never give up! it can get really frustrating, but take all the love you have for art and hold it close to your heart. thank you so much for such an informative video that made me want to draw! keep going!
i swear in this video i learned more than i learned in art schools and university. they never told us about composition in such detail and yet simple ways
I still don't quite understand how to come up with a good composition but it's undeniable thats your drawing looks so pleasing to the eyes. Thx for making the vid ill be sure to watch it again
Thank you so much. This one is, hands down, my favorite video on the topic of composition. Not only was your explanation extremely informative and didactic, but your beautiful art helped greatly as examples. Sorry for my bad English, and keep up the good work, you are really inspiring.
This is such a super informative video for any skill level! I've always admired the art seen in gacha games and the objects and backgrounds they have that act as 'accessories' to the main character illustration but couldn't figure out how to achieve it and to find out the whole thing has to do with composition has been eye opening! This showed up in my recommendations with good timing! Looking forward to your progress and it'll be awesome if you did another video on this a year later to compare!
this is amazing!! i have to say that the introductory scenario with being unsure of what to do next and just copying pinterest photos genuinely hit close to home, its exactly what i am experiencing at the moment! i knew i should figure out how to arrange my work on the page someday, but I just don't know how to even get started on the theory about it, seeing your progress laid out here was really interesting! thank you, lets work hard together!
This is exactly what I'm facing rn. This video is phenomenon! I watched twice. First time it was mind blower, 2nd time seems understand better.I probably will come back and watch it 3rd , 4th etc. Sad there's no following videos on this topic. But I'm very grateful to having the chance to watch this video! 🤩
We need more videos like this. RUclips is full of videos that explain the basics in every video. This vid goes straight to the point. I have learnt a lot.
I think this is what has been lacking in my art that is making it so difficult for me to realize my ideas. I didn’t have words for it before but this basically covers that frustration I’ve been having. I know colors and how to draw something, but somehow my art always looks a bit messy even if I paint things how I want them to look and it’s because the composition didn’t feel cohesive to me.
Your video is literally a pack of valuable information! Feels like I need to write down some of your keypoints and implement it right away. What a great video. You have my subscribe
Thank you, this helped me so much. At certain point my illustrations felt so boring, I'm just copying pinterest references. My growth is stagnant, idk what to do next. This gave me motivation to improve my composition.
I've been feeling stuck with my art for a while, and thanks to your video now i know what i can work on! this is a great analysis of composition and i'll look more into it, thank you! c:
thank you for this! Genius! I still struggle with composition but can never pinpoint exactly where it went wrong... having to arrange simple shapes and lines and filling them out with your drawn elements was an excellent tip that I hope I can put into practice. thank you!
What a good video: I like your straightforward, deadpan way of approaching subject matter. The intro, outlining your own struggles was a great entry point. The second half of the video, with your attempts at imitating your personal favourite paintings, was great. Please don't get the impression that we hate looking at crude drawings or doodles: this is the digital art community, so we're lenient on that kinda stuff.
THIS VIDEO IS SO ReAL AND I LOVEEE ITTT, ive just been watching art videos and this is the most informative so far oh my lord, thankyou you are amazing and you will be an amazing amazing artist
this is the first time an explanation of composition has made sense to me since a film class i took in middle school (and what we did with composition was very rudimentary). I have been wanting to try more detailed illustrations, thank you for this!
this is so incredibly helpful i just wanted to say thank you! i also have been feeling some stagnation in my art but now i finally feel like i know where to go to improve!!
Wonderful!! I really needed something as synthetized and straightforward as this to get a grasp of how composition works, especially in Mucha's and some other art nouveau artists with a book reference. You're doing pretty well in your own process! Thank you for sharing it, it's pretty encouraging :)
Thank you for giving me a word to describe arranging things in a specific way. I realize this is why I arrange things the way I do. Simple example, but fixing a Google Side for class a certain way.
Tysm for this. Like you said I’ve also reached sort of a dead end in drawing, only drawing random photos off of Pinterest and kept struggling to learn these concepts as a somewhat academic person having it explained like this was just perfect ❤️
That's a pretty good vídeo, it summarizes well the topic and go straight to the point, now I know a little more and know what to searsh up to get better! Thank you :)
thank you so much for this- really helped me get out of an art slump!! when u mentioned at the start “this is for those who r only able to copy what they see off pinterest and doesnt find art enjoyable” i KNEW this was the video for me. so thank you, it was really easy to follow along and now im inspired to art again ❤

I've been itching for some good tutorials that's a little advanced and this hits the spot. You did so well to explain complicated subjects in simple terms, quick and efficiently! Would love to listen your perspective on other art subjects too in the future (eg, colours, design etc). Thank you for making this!!
I agree with all the comments here. So informative, easy to understand, and oh, love the overall composition and presentation of ideas! (Not to mention your background music, it’s calming and pleasing on the ears). Thank you so much!
Your tutorials seem specifically amde for me, not sounding so snobbish as if composition is some easy, catch-all thing that can make your art work, you break it down into smaller theories and steps and studying techniques that can help me improve my art. I’ll apply these as soon as I can, and follow your journey as I complement my own.
It is inspiring that you continue to put your artwork out there even if you do not fully understand all the art techniques. As a self taught artist, I was afraid that I would be doing something wrong in the eyes of the professionals. Do what you do, keep up the good work. 👍
Honestly thank you so much! I did one illustration that I just can't seem to top for a while even though I am challenging myself and don't know what to work on anymore so this is a life saver! Thank you for putting this together for free on here, never saw anyone tackle composition like this!
thank you so much! i’ve always had trouble with composition but the tutorials on here haven’t been helpful to me because they’ll tell you how to see composition but not how to *use* it, but your video finally makes it make sense. i think i’m finally starting to understand it and actually feel excited about drawing again. thank you for showing us your process and wish you lots of joy in your journey!
Ughh I can’t thank you enough for making this video. I just didn’t know what step to take on getting better. I pretty much just screenshot Pinterest pictures and referenced it and lost my passion because of that. This has inspired me to get my sketchbook out again!
I love how this feels like a learning process instead of a perfect artist explaining why their art is better and yours sucks (obv. exaggeration but you get the point). The improvement is amazing! Such a structured and well researched video! Thank you :)
This is fantastic! Honestly this is a lot of work to explain in such a great way and paced so well to learn from. Please continue to make more even if some videos have overlap of topics - since each workpiece can have unique methods of approach, I would love to see more of your self critique, this video approaches self evaluation & analysis healthily. Thank you!
I love how I noticed throughout this video that most of the characteristics of a well composed drawing mentioned are noticeable in the drawings I am most proud of! Composition is amazing and art is so cool! Nice video!
I remember scrolling through someone's art work, their name i cant recall. anyway, i noticed their artwork was not really pretty but it was captiviating. The characters anatomy was exaggerted, the fingers were frog-like, but i kept screenshotting their entire account to get to look at it offline. At the time i didnt know what composition in art was, so i thought it was an unreachable level in art. :P great video by the way. i've facing an artblock after finishing finals, so this would be a great to go back and improve my art more. 💜
bro this is the most informative video on composition I've ever seen that doesn't incorporate other topics like perspective or just shows a 'quick trick'
Thank you for the video, I am also find my progress stagnant for many years after the massive improvement from proportion, lineart and colouring thanks to years of dedication in daily drawing. It's really frustrating - I ask everywhere on internet for a direction but nobody can help me on this. I somewhat know that I need to improve on composition, but I just don't know how or where to start. I will try out some of your tips soon!
THIS IS MY EVERYTHING. SO SIMPLE EXPLAINING (AND SO WELL), ADORBLE TRYING AND ANALYZE, KEEP GOING ON AND THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP!! ART SCHOOLS AND COURSES WOULD NEVER TEACH THIS MUCH SHORT AND LIKE THIS. THANK YOU SO MUCH AGAIN!!!!💙
I’ve learned about these concepts in art school, and I gotta say it was really refreshing to hear your take on them. Also, your video editing and voice over are very pleasant and you keep a good tempo. Im looking forward to your future videos :]
I'm an art student, but my lessons about compositions are really focused on perspective and colours, so I was so confused by the way my teachers rated my works... Like... I followed everything in my lessons, and I didn't understand what was wrong. Now I realize I was just mislead, and I feel so much better. This video is really bringing back new perspectives to me, and the strength to once again try new things ! Thank you so much !
Initially I had my reservation with this video, but after watching it, I can relate with all the issues mentioned at the beginning of the video and managed to learn a few things from this. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience with us all self-learners 🙏 the idea generator is also a very interesting idea and thank you for sharing it with us! I would like to add/supplement a little bit for others who might want to look into some aspects/techniques mentioned in the video a little bit further. 4:21 - D shapped scaffold is an extension/development of the triangle composition technique that's already prevalent since the middle age. A lot of classical arts and even modern illustration has the element of triangle to create focus point in the overall illustration (the D shape mentioned in the video seems to exclusively refer to the character. It's an interesting observation for sure) 4:40 - deviation of the lines within a figure drawing is a technique/term called contrapposto/counterpose. Contrapposto usually heavily leans to anatomy and human structure, but using the concept to generate flow like in the video is also a very good idea.
The part where you mentioned being stuck in a constant loop of drawing Pinterest references.... WOW have I never resonated with anything more! I want to draw my own things, but my compositions are always off... This video has pointed me in the right direction and I'm excited to try my hand at this!
Dude this is brilliant! The amount of condensed information and introduction to concepts without it feeling saturated or overwhelming its just amazing for me. This could easily be the preview video for an in-depth course about illustration and composition and i would work my ass off to pay it no matter the price. Keep up the good work my dude 🎉, I am a self-taught graphic artist and this video inspired me to trust my own learning path and desire to understand why some pieces work and function and not just believe in blind constant practice.
Gestalt is actually extremely usefull for composition, you work with flow, balance and even accents. In class we would make a composition based off of circles, lines, squares and triangles mostly in black or white and with a 10-20% of red to use as accent to guide the viwer. Therory of shape and shape languages are a must know

usually whenever i watch an art tutorial on youtube, they just repeat information ive heard a thousand times. this video has genuinely taught me so much
Neat video, I feel like many artists (including myself) often prioritize making a pretty well drawn artwork which usually causes us to forget about composition and even storytelling.
Thanks for supporting. Of course I will keep creating.
This is amazing! i can see the effort you've put into the video and the improvement between the two peices is actually insane, awesome work and thank you for posting!
Thank you for recommending, his videos are super helpful, I should subscribe earlier.
6:50 "My colors suck."
a very relatable moment
As a self taught artist who hasnt been able to practice due to school. It's nice to see this be in my recommendation, maybe once i finish this year, I'd be able to focus more and practice it again. This gave me enough motivation to remind myself why i study art even though i'm taking engineering. Thanks man, good luck on your journer in studying and to those who read this as well ❤.
ありがとうございます!
Thank you!
The AI voice gave me an uncanny feeling but this video was very helpful.
OW MY GOD! I'm amazed!!!!! You basically took all the questions I was having and answered!
Thank you so much for your support!
ive been stuck for months with my artwork.
Couldn't understand half of it but my brain still tells me "yo that's the deal, that's the thing you should be practicing!!!"
this video is wonderful and very insightful. one of my fave art videos so far.
Finally, it’s been awhile since I feel like I learned something on RUclips that was super helpful. I might even pick up the book! Thank you!
even as someone who's been drawing for six years, these kinds of videos are extremely helpful! your colors and understanding of shapes improved so much in just two drawings. keep going and never give up! it can get really frustrating, but take all the love you have for art and hold it close to your heart. thank you so much for such an informative video that made me want to draw! keep going!
DAMN the quality of this video is absolutely stunning. keep it up!
Days, weeks, probably months, of your hard work condensed into one explanation of this video is so cool to me.
Keep up your work man, you did great!
The voiceover drives me crazy but the concepts are concrete.
new favorite art channel, thanks for the tips man
omg this is so underrated, this video talk about so many useful topics
i swear in this video i learned more than i learned in art schools and university. they never told us about composition in such detail and yet simple ways
I’ve never felt more seen and understood thank you so much for this, I’m excited to create again
Wow that's been weirdly accurate to the point, exactly what I learned in design school, music is soothing too, perfect video Foudo, love it.
Thank you! This is unbelievably helpful. I am so grateful to hear of your struggles as you improve.
I really appreciate you making this video words literally cannot describe how thankful I am! Thank you so so so SO much 😊
Your video is literally a pack of valuable information!
This is great...Please make more! Your examples are better than in other composition videos.
this is so incredibly helpful i just wanted to say thank you! i also have been feeling some stagnation in my art but now i finally feel like i know where to go to improve!!
I've never heard of any of these techniques. Thank you for showcasing, I'll be adding them to my work.
I have been trying to find a way to draw like this, It was such a perfect timing that your videos appear on my youtube page. This is very helpful! now I know what to do and to find my weaknesses ^_^
I've been itching for some good tutorials that's a little advanced and this hits the spot. You did so well to explain complicated subjects in simple terms, quick and efficiently! Would love to listen your perspective on other art subjects too in the future (eg, colours, design etc). Thank you for making this!!
I’d recommend the book “The painter’s secret geometry” it goes really in depth on composition.
Absolute chad. Thank you so much for teaching us all this information for free. Much love and I wish you well on your art journey!
I agree with all the comments here. So informative, easy to understand, and oh, love the overall composition and presentation of ideas! (Not to mention your background music, it’s calming and pleasing on the ears). Thank you so much!
holy this opened my eyes to some new things I need to think about even after 12+ years of drawing- never to late to learn :,)
Thank you for this! I kept studying composition but I struggling with applying it to my works, and you explained everything super clearly too!
Glad to help you!
Check out the book “the painter’s secret geometry” it’s great to understand composition from old masters
Honestly thank you so much! I did one illustration that I just can't seem to top for a while even though I am challenging myself and don't know what to work on anymore so this is a life saver! Thank you for putting this together for free on here, never saw anyone tackle composition like this!
Incredible, efficient compalition of powerfull knowladge. Well done. I will be coming back to this one regulary.
thank you so much! i’ve always had trouble with composition but the tutorials on here haven’t been helpful to me because they’ll tell you how to see composition but not how to *use* it, but your video finally makes it make sense. i think i’m finally starting to understand it and actually feel excited about drawing again. thank you for showing us your process and wish you lots of joy in your journey!
You really nailed the analysis on how to break down complex compositions! This will be super helpful in building my portfolio. Thanks!
A lot of valuable information in a short time!
And it's interesting to watch you attempting to apply those principles! Great video!
Nice video!
Thank you so much for this video! I am a self-taught artist and I really like the video style and how structure it is 💗.
Thank you for this video. It's straight to the point and lists what we need to learn so well.
great video by the way. i've facing an artblock after finishing finals, so this would be a great to go back and improve my art more. 💜
bro this is the most informative video on composition I've ever seen that doesn't incorporate other topics like perspective or just shows a 'quick trick'
As soon as I saw the title, I hit like. Composition really is that one step that gets you closer to become exponentially better at art.
very good, at first I thought the video was confusing, but I realized that the topic is very complex and you were able to explain it well.
It's an interesting observation for sure)
4:40 - deviation of the lines within a figure drawing is a technique/term called contrapposto/counterpose. Contrapposto usually heavily leans to anatomy and human structure, but using the concept to generate flow like in the video is also a very good idea.
Such a lovely and informative video, and the music in the background was such a nice touch
Thank you
The part where you mentioned being stuck in a constant loop of drawing Pinterest references....
Plain background figures are my favorite type of illustrations and i find it so hard to recreate, so this is a godsend
The fact that you use Alphonse Mucha in this video automatically secured my Like xD This was soooo helpful, like you wouldn't believe. Thank you!!!
