Always support your local bands. We had a kickass scene down here in Menifee around '05 to '08. I met many friends, saw many shows, and even played in and alongside some of the groups. Things got quiet by 2010, I guess we all just went our separate ways. Enjoy local music till things get quiet, you get older, life gets busy.
Hell, we had a good thing going in my tiny ass college town - not a college town with a reputation for the arts even. We had a whole cadre of college bands and collectives organizing basement and house shows, with a few dedicated houses, a couple of dudes who’d enforce rules to keep things safe. We had three really high quality bands imo, and one pretty sophisticated jazz fusion band that was just a little too snobby for me, but went the furthest out of any of them. There were probably about a dozen other pretty typical college bands, not very exciting in terms of musical innovation, but good for some Friday night fun.But there was this great atmosphere of collaboration, voluntary contributions to the gas money bucket, and the bands all mutually supported each other. Eventually, they were pulling some pretty serious musicians from the indie circuit to these house shows, including an outright legend from the midwest emo scene. We’re talking a town of ~8,000 people, over half of them students, 50 min from the nearest city by car, so that was some serious pull. The whole thing seemed to start to break down, at least to my eye, when a sexual assault incident tore the community apart. There were still shows and parties, but it wasn’t the same, and it seemed like the torch didn’t really get passed to the next generation. I still see some of the folks since we ended up moving to the same neck of the woods after graduation, and they’ve still got all that vibrant energy, but it’s nothing like it was and I’ll always remember those college nights fondly. The one thing I wish is that there had been more intersection between their shows and our small local drag scene. The social spheres never really intersected, which I thought was a shame, since I think there could have been some serious dynamite if these indie/experimental rockers connected with the drag performers. There was this guitarist who didn’t do drag, but was always at the parties the drag performers were at, who would just shred over electronic music with these basic laser shows in front of them, it was like nothing I’d ever seen until years later when that sort of thing wormed its way into Gen Z experimental pop and aesthetics. But, it never quite clicked into place, and I never had the social capital to make it happen. Still always grateful for what we all had, when we had it
This is alot more common in more places than you think, happened the exact way in my town, it happens, then its over, and noone knows how to make it happen again.
Concerto epocale.
I saw them 2 years later in June of 2001. It was in Green Bay Wisconsin at riverside ballroom. It was a $5 show and well worth it. Great show lots of energy. They played pretty much everything you would want to hear. Plus 5 encores. You were able to be up close to the band old school style. These types of shows are rare today with other bands. It's too bad they've been on a "hiatus" since 2003. Anyone that's seen fugazi usually remembers it well.
