- Clay utensils are familiar in Kerala. Especially for traditional style food making, it is really important to have clay vessels. Making of clay pots or vessels is a long process. First step is grinding the clay to become nice and smooth. After that it will be molded to the required shape using spinning wheels, which are helping to get the exact shape for the vessel. After getting shape, it is then dried in sunlight for getting correct color for the vessel. Last and most important step is treating this vessels with heavy temperature . Almost three nights and two days are needed for completing this process. Upon all utensils get treated with temperature, we can take this out after cooling. Treating with temperature helps the utensils to become strong and hard.

വളരെയധികം കഷ്ടപ്പാട് ഒരു ചട്ടിയായി വരണമെങ്കിൽ . ഇതിനായി , മണ്ണ്, മണൽ വൈക്കോൽ , ചകിരി, വിറക്. മുതലായ വേണം. മണ്ണ് ഒരു തരി കല്ലില്ലാതെ വേണം ഇതിനായി . മണ്ണിൽ നിന്നും കല്ല് വേർതിരിച്ചെടുക്കണമെങ്കിൽ വളരെയധികം ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടാണ്. പക്ഷേ ഇപ്പോൾ മെഷീൻ ഉള്ളതു കൊണ്ട് വളരെ യധികം സഹായകമാണ്. പക്ഷേ നല്ലൊരു തുക മെഷീനിനായി വേണം. പിന്നെ അതിന്റെ ഉണക്കൽ പ്രക്രീയ വളരെയധികം ശ്രദ്ധിക്കക്കണം. ചൂട് അധികമായാൽ പെട്ടിപ്പോവാനും സാധ്യത. എന്റെ അച്ഛനും ഈ പണി എടുക്കുന്ന ആളാണ്. പക്ഷേ മണ്ണ് അരയക്കാനുള്ള മെഷീൻ ഇല്ലാത്തതു കൊണ്ട് വളരെയധികം ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടുന്നു.

Very nice and informative video. Thank you for bringing it. Clay port making is a dying art, support them as needed. I remember, in early 1980s, when I was a student in Trissur Govt Engineering College, Stereo systems were very popular among students. Every student wanted one. Rich kids got their expensive stereo systems from their relatives. Poor kids started making themselves and finally, I used a specially made clay pot as speaker box. The sound effect was fantastic. I went and stayed with some very talented pot makers in Viyur to make those clay speaker boxes. It was a memorable experience for me. Again, thank you for bringing this beautiful video. Wish the pot makers for continuing their traditional art of making pottery.
